  • This is by far the most beautiful version of the aria from opera Il Giustino I have heard until now. On other performances, even in Vivaldi CD recording, they (Spinosi+Jaroussky) have never reached such a sublime tension.

Normally I like listening to his fast coloratura pieces the best. But this one is SO exquisite, it just melts! HIs solidarity of line, and Lemieux's mastery of Vivaldi is unsurpassed.

    I will see with joy,
    the soul of my soul
heart of my heart full of content.
And if from my dear object
    I be far away
I will sigh, suffering every moment...

Maestro Spinosi is a conductor, dancer, comedian and acrobat on stage!

Asombroso.

Il Giustino has been already recorder by Alan Curtis in 2002 but, of course, after Spinosi it is very hard to listen to others. Even though some critics (ones who are used to English type of hymnatic Handel) accuse him for too agressive way of playing, Spinosi's Vivaldi is the most expressive one.

Spinosi has said that his next recording of La fida ninfa will be his last Vivaldi opera for Naive. In fact, score of Il Giustino has been published about 1978 for Vivaldi's 300th anniversary by Ricordi. Of course, it is overedited according to that time baroque standards and it is not quite suitable to nowdays performing requirements.

You are right on transposition. My experience tells, they do it for this aria. (Even in the Heroes CD.) As the range of this aria is medium-high, probably, PJ tries to reduce the number of his passing notes on B and C.

Have you noticed that when Philippe takes breath in the middle of a long note (f.ex. 0:54), the note doesn't seem to interrupt but to sound on? (This is maybe still more so in "Cum dederit"). Must be the magic of his voice...

Probably because of going beyond the E5. The original goes to F#5. He seems to sing these type of songs in a very Mezzo range.

    I meant Spinosi....not Lemieux! :(

I did not know male mezzo's passed on B and C. I am a female mezzo, and I pass on E and F. And he has a slighty higher topnote than me. Strange....
