I main ret pally now in P2 of TBC classic. We have Seal of the Martyr, the Ally version of SoB. Seal Twisting has helped Ret Pally a lot, but it's still a huge struggle, mostly because of people's lack of understanding of the class - both Ret players, and Ret haters. Guilds with loot council will never give Ret first dibs on contested gear, and this will result in our weak dps being a self fulfilling prophecy because we're always the last to get the best gear pieces, if at all. The guild moves onto the next phase and Ret pallies will often end up with gaping holes in their BiS list. These include Leather gear, Mail gear, and trinkets that pretty much all melee dps classes AND Hunters AND Prot Warriors, AND Bears want.

Always got out dps by a mage or hunter for certain. I can say from experience in pvp though... a ret paladin always was formitable and I always held my ground well. As burning crusade kept going. The two prepatchs for wrath made ret paladins unstopable but so were death knights when the final prepatch hit.

Wait what, Ret was good in TBC? Just so you know, in PvE, Belf Ret in TBC is barely viable because of Seal of Blood and Alliance Ret is not really viable and very luck dependent because they are forced to use SoC. They still have mana issues, they can only do decent DPS if they leech more support than they bring, and if you want them to bring maximum utilities they can't do good DPS anymore. In PvP, non healing Paladins are actually in a worse spot than in Classic because so many classes got so much better and hybrid and reckoning based builds are gutted in TBC. Many other classes got new CC, utilities or burst that the addition of avenging wrath and crusader strike aren't enough. Not to mention Avenging wrath and all blessings (freedom, protection) can now be stolen, and Divine Shield can be dispelled. Ret can be used as a niche spec to counter several popular comps (RMP in low rating, WRD) but not much else and can be easily exploited at high ratings.
you wot mate? Ret was viable in vanilla. There was a ret in world first Naxx clear and in the sweatiest guild at the time. Ret is viable in classic right now. There was even a 40 man Paladin raid full clear in classic. Ret only got stronger in TBC. The weakest classes are those that specced and geared to only DPS. They rely entirely on the raid on making them stronger with loads of buffs and waste tons of healer mana to keep them alive, and are often the main reason wipes happen. You can DPS in any class.
So what are the judgement priorities? If you have prot+Holy as well as retribution? Light and wisdom are great raid supports, so I assume they are standard. But then what does retri apply? Crusader for the prots threat or blood/martyr for personal dps?
Retribution Paladins have a talent that makes their Crusader Judgement provide a 3% Crit Buff for every attack against that target, no matter if its ranged, meele or spell. So if you have a Retribution Paladin, definitely use that.
Ret wasn't garbage but you don't need more than 1 unless you're a more casual guild and you only want to clear raids without caring about speed runs. TBC raids in general aren't friendly towards melee dps and the rets base dps isn't much lower than other melee, and they also bring passive +3% crit and +4% damage for the raid, in addition to constantly refreshing all judgements to keep 100% uptime - that alone justifies bringing one. If you have a choice between a ret and a rogue the ret is just better (until sunwell), between a ret and a warrior you can go either way. If you want to be competitive in parses you'll need a ret in your raid. A big reason ret was seen as still bad in BC is because their tier gear isn't particularly good - so people built tier thinking it was fixed and they didn't get the most out of their class. And a lot of rets were complacent in their dps, just using judgement and SoB/SoC and only doing ~80% of the dps they could be doing if they seal swapped (800dps vs 1000dps on a target dummy without dps cds, buffs, or debuffs on target) in dungeon pre-bis.
You should link this video in endless tbc. Maimed a ret for 2 months and I think I saw maybe one post in global chat looking for a ret. Everyone just wants locks, hunters, and shamans.
"so good" is a bit of a stretch. i would say "decent" just for the utility factor. the damage still remains rather low compared to other classes of the same tier. Even with the utility argument, most people still had the lolret stigma which made finding groups really hard in general. Prot paladins were amazing but it seemed they didnt really become mainstream until hyjal due to vanilla's lolprot stigma. Was really disappointed when i went back to classic as ret and that mindset didnt change regardless of how easy the content was. all the ret paladins in my guild had to raid as holy. i personally dont like ret in pve so i wanted to raid as holy to get ret gear that was handed down with my eyes on tier 2.5. 2H weps were still catered towards warriors that often never stepped in BGs. the only thing that was open was Eye of sulfuras because nobody wanted it due to the crafting price. IDK. maybe it was my guild. i would heal and switch to dps for ez healing fights but would get told to switch back when the tanks would die due to healers trying to snipe the raid for better parses. sit there..... spam flash of light on the tank. I dont see the tryhard mindset. In Classic's case... if a few ret paladins prevented your guild from progressing, then you had other issues to begin with. too bad people just want to stack "the best" with the common argument "why should i pick up the slack from bad offspecs?" People just dont play anymore. optimize the fun out of everything. For sure we will see atleast 1 in a raid. thankfully that should stick. Good luck trying to become the guild's token ret paladin though. Now for PVP. Blood elf racial was amazing for ret. a way to interrupt spells. can break stealth in some cases. the mana replenish would often be crucial at times to restore enough to land a game winning hoj/repentance since rank 1 seal of command goes a long way especially in the mana burn meta. Seal twisting was a great addition. imagine getting a seal of command proc and twisting it into blood to get 2 blood procs on the white and command hit. the burst potential was huge. it was really heavy on mana though which ret still had a lot of issues with in pvp. Seal twisting exists to an extent in classic with seal of justice to try and get stun procs. If you start with seal of crusader and twist it into command, you can get your next white hit coming in at 40% faster speed with non-reduced damage. From a DPS standpoint, it was impractical since its a dps loss if you mess it up at any point but you potentially increase seal of commands proc rate from 7ppm to 8ppm if perfect. For pvp, it was nice if you were going for a good burst window or just to initiate a fight with. Seal twisting wasnt really known in vanilla. I honestly think classic's case is due to spell batching. Twisting in TBC was the real deal though especially for pve. Judge of justice change. prevents people from getting above 100% move speed. very niche but can be very good. Druid healers became popular in my battle group due to travel form removing snares. very mobile. innervate helped vs all the mana burning going on. Ran a 3's with a resto shaman, arms warrior, ret paladin. Justice completely gimped druid healers. me and the warrior would just bum rush them. i slap the justice, he starts stacking sunders. then burst them down with windfury baby. PVP wise, ret really wasnt as bad as people thought. Lack of mobility was an issue. Dps wasnt consistent enough to apply constant pressure. but the burst potential was great. Ret really shines as a support dps. find a reliable damage partner such as rogue or frost mage in 2's being my favorite. find a good warrior for 3's. cleanse and freedom your partners. bop them. sacrifice to help pop your own CC without wasting trinket. hell you can even time a judgement of blood to pop a polymorph since the damage was delayed. Resilient and great support. its why i loved ret in pvp and still do. the greatest addition to ret though... being able to finally have windfury.
Uhhh you know I ret for classic and almost never is there down time in the gcd. Between seal twisting, the quicker judge cd and spamming mana pots to keep con up there was rarely a moment to do nothing. I never understood why some ret just auto attack when other classes are using there abilities on cd.
Ret pallies def became better in tbc compared to classic. But still they weren't so "good" they just became usefull because of the 3% crit buff. Also they need WF otherwise they would just do classic damage.
They are very good specially Tier 5 and forward, the problem is not everyone know how to play them and most people prefer to go holy which is a faceroll in TBC really.

@@Flarestar91 Yea we will see, I mean we can boost dmg a little bit. One advice from ally pally player, sometimes when you feel you need more mana cast blessing of sacrifice on tank so you get some extra heals. I hope there will be spot for us.
From Karazhan to The Eye, a retribution paladin is usually the lowest in regards to dps, unless the fight is very long, then moonkins that had to use innervate on a healer will drop below you. As soon as you can use exorcism and encounter demons, from Mount Hyjal onwards, your damage will go up, as demons take additional holy damage. In full SWP gear you will hit like a truck as a bloodelf, but you won't top the dps meter. At the same time you most likely won't be at the bottom. As an Alliance paladin you will suffer though.
They have confirmed that at lvl 70 all paladins will have both seals now. Doesn't make what you said any different but SOB is just so much better like 90% of the time lol
Damage is only half of what Seal of Blood gives. Belf ret is able to stack haste and agility while Alliance ret has to stack spell power with a very slow weapon.

This whole video is based on Wrath ret paladin it seems... ret had 4 changes during the prepatches of wrath and the patch 2 months after wrath launched. Ret during BC was rough, avenging wrath was 5 mins.. judgements and seals were single cast. Had to be refreshed every use with a short 30 second buff uptime. This was changed in the wrath prepatch twice. Once to make the seal buff last longer... the following patch made the seals last indefinate and not expended on use. The patch after that when nax opened in wrath. All paladins lose spiritual attunement. During burning crusade however before the huge ret paladin class change buffs. Ret paladin was the lowest dps class with very little help other than being a buff despenser. Ret paladin had no CC so killing mobs in heroic dungeons was difficult. Since pre wrath, mobs were a lot stronger and elite mobs were almost like raid bosses to a heroic dungeon group. Needless to say that most groups choose a mage, rogue, shaman, or hunter over a ret paladin. I really think that my paladin was the top 5 ret paladins in the world cause back then there were less than about 200 players that played a ret paladin as a main spec.
People seem to forget this content is over 12 yrs old.. Most of us know all the mechanics and tricks so min/maxing isn't such a big deal like it was when the expansion was new. decent guilds should be able to face roll most of the content regardless of spec.
I love Paladins, I just feel like pre WoTLK they don’t do anything? It’s mostly just standing and auto-attacking. I don’t personally find that very enjoyable or impactful. Thank goodness for Crusader’s Strike, but Protection feels incredibly boring.
You can play as ret, but don't expect that you will find a lot of dungeon groups, you must have bs weapon, in raid there is only 1 ret, but still remember that most of the gulds can't make a perfect group, it's always better to have good ret then having a bad any other dps. But if you go blood elf your life will be so much easyer.

(set boni aside since they could not change those) it was actually harder than in classic to win vs armor based classes. in classic i only lost to a few wl. what really made us strong in bc were those wings to burst down priests or other low armor people. while raiding i actually beat the nihilum paladin in the dps meter, despite he had the better seal of blood. simply by focussing on attack speed to get soc and double hits to proc more often. but yeah there was only 1 boss where i beat our illidan blade rogue and many raids did not even use rets saying they do no dmg. but i was pala leader so we had one ;D me

I hated tbc ret. The spec was boring. 41pts deep rep was the only viable spec. In classic u used ret reckoning/ holy ret/ deep ret depending on choice.
They were not as great as you make them sound and not as bad as people think. Still, they are a pain to level to 70 (you're always oom if you don't use your discretion) and not highly desired by groups in my experience but you kinda mentioned that. Now in Wrath, they will truly begin to shine as DPS and you can actually spam abilities, first come first serve, albeit the order depends on the tier you're wearing.
Every comment is about how bad ret is. Which is true, at least on the commonly used private server patch. But prot paladins, on the same patch, are amazing! So if ret doesn't work out for you you will be a VERY attractive tank.
lol ret paladins are garbage in TBC. why would you take a gimped class when you can get any ranged caster and have them do almost three times as much dps with much less gear requirement, and bring much more stuff to the table. paladins dont bring anything that a prot or holy wouldnt bring already. and TBC is super melee unfriendly already. and on top of all this, Alliance rets are way worse than Horde Rets.
If you want to play Ret pala then wait for Wotlk. There, I saved you the time listening to other videos or search on the internet :D Jokes aside, sure paladins were great as prot in TBC and yes in lategame Ret could be very good in arena. Like when Warriors could 2 shot people as well. But still, if you really long for playing Ret when it was very strong, well I said it already. It should be common knowledge by now that in TBC early game: caster heaven, late game: melee heaven. In PvP especially.

Exactly. They are vasty improved in TBC and yet still weak. I remember in TBC we had a pally spec deep enough to get the 3% crit judgement and he would just heal and judgement in healing gear. Paladins job is to heal, accept it, or have fun in a trash guild.

Just so you kids and casuals who didn't clear all TBC content in 2007-2009 know, Ret STILL isn't going to be allowed in any good guild, sorry to burst your bubble. The DPS is just too low and you are better as a healer. As BEST, you might be able to be the 3% crit guy, and heal in melee range and melee/judge just enough to keep up the 3% crit buff. You might be able to snag 2 handers and dps plate AFTER the warriors have it. Sure, trash guilds will let you be ret, so you have a choice: Ret in a trash guild or do your proper job and heal in a good guild and go mess around as ret in your own time and pick up loot after the warriors get it.
@Tobiáš Zvolský As I stated in my first post you can play ret in a bad guild, which I'm sure yours is. Wow you clear classic content!? Everyone does. Do you do it quickly and smoothly? I doubt it. How much do you want to bet, not even knowing your server, the best guild on your server doesn't allow ret? You think I am the bad guy, but you are the bad guy. You want to play a shitty spec and still have a raid spot, which is a selfish and entitled attitude to have.
@Tobiáš Zvolský I was in a top alliance guild for TBC, we did not allow ret. We had a healing paladin put up the 3% crit judgment, that is what top guilds did. Also, yes, I was the one Arms warrior and will be again. Also, Warriors scale well with gear, better than ret, and while I agree they are weak in the start, guilds will have them as an "investment" for BT/Sunwell. Thankfully, not 8 in a raid like we have now but at a minimum 1 arms and maybe a fury if he's good. Im thrilled warriors aren't as good in TBC, it gets all the pretenders off my class, they will all roll Warlock or Hunter.

I can say from experience in pvp though... a ret paladin always was formitable and I always held my ground well.
As burning crusade kept going. The two prepatchs for wrath made ret paladins unstopable but so were death knights when the final prepatch hit.
My friend and I twinked our Pallies at 49 in TBC, he was ret/holy I was Holy/prot. It took groups to get our node. The passive heals and mana regen was so broken from judgements

seal of blood vengeance, its confirmed that blizzard adds both abilites to both factions in tbc classic :) good choice i think :)
The fact he can reroll holy
Both factions get the same seals in TBC Classic - confirmed in pre patch notes
Yeah, but Blizzhordes bias toward Horde was clear back in original vanilla and TBC. It is obvious that most Blizzhorde devs played Horde back then. 🤣
Go away xardas is looking for u
Well this is pretty much spot on.
you wot mate?
@@JamCie Definitely makes sense.. The abovementioned Wisdom/Light are for prot and holy paladins to apply then :p
Do you have a link to your UI? Big fan of your health bars, party bars, etc
What was the spinning hammer move ?
Never saw a ret pally in a raid in TBC but my warrior go clapped in pvp by one so quick I didn't know what hit me.
Lolret was still garbage in TBC. Maybe a step up from classic but still garbage. Beginning of wotlk they were gods tho.
Ret paladins tanked Icecrown Citadel as ret, in tank gear. It was RETarded.
I was tanking ZA as ret. Ret was stupid buff in that pre patch and a single DS would wipe a horde cemetery respawn.
had people say lolret until i destroyed them in pvp. there where so few of us that people never took ret seriously becuase of that
Ret wasn't garbage but you don't need more than 1 unless you're a more casual guild and you only want to clear raids without caring about speed runs.
Paladins can solo dungeons at 70 so level one anyway
Endless content is buffed tho

Doesnt the alliance get Seal or the Martyr?
Now comes the real internal struggle to stay alliance or reroll BE...
Alliance and BE both heal just fine, why struggle with the choice.
Belf ftw, well, at least you'll look good
Johnathan Walker sound logic
Seal Twisting only applies to Blood Elf paladins anyways.
Uhhh you know I ret for classic and almost never is there down time in the gcd. Between seal twisting, the quicker judge cd and spamming mana pots to keep con up there was rarely a moment to do nothing. I never understood why some ret just auto attack when other classes are using there abilities on cd.
hardly spam mana pots, they have a CD
Ret pallies def became better in tbc compared to classic. But still they weren't so "good" they just became usefull because of the 3% crit buff. Also they need WF otherwise they would just do classic damage.
WF?
They are very good specially Tier 5 and forward, the problem is not everyone know how to play them and most people prefer to go holy which is a faceroll in TBC really.
I rember going oom and seal of command not procing for ages
its like playing XCOM and missing an attack that has a 99% hit rate
People always ignore the fact that you can stack seal of vengeance on bosses AND use seal of command, it has a 15s window to be refreshed.
Stack vengeance with a 3.8 speed weapon? How long is this fight? Lol
@@ReddXYZ with crusader strike and weapon swapping it takes like 5 seconds, and you can make a simple /macro for the rotation.
@@sonnibetoni6009 Hmm its kinda nice to hear that, but a lot of times you need to stop dps on boss and run from him, so vengeance will disappear, but still I admire this
@@aleksadmitrovic6347 We might see how this will work out in real scenarios. I remember SoV just proccing on a chance so you still can sit there for a way too long time trying to 5 stack a dot that isn't even that great. Rather prefer 2 Swings and CS on my 2H Herald with SoC tho it also just had a ppm of 7. And refreshing the Seal was a bit of a flipcoin too, because you already had to start trying to refresh it at least with 8 seconds left because of above told chance to proc. I think it was a good chance, but RNG sometimes hits you hard.
Is that Witcher 3 music?^^
Damage is only half of what Seal of Blood gives. Belf ret is able to stack haste and agility while Alliance ret has to stack spell power with a very slow weapon.
Yeah but not anymore, as Blizzard confirmed Alliance Paladins get Seal of the Martyr in TBC Classic 🤣 good news
No problem with Seal of Blood in TBC Classic since blizzard said they would give it to alliance also. Same with Seal of Vengeance for alliance.
Can you give a source to confirm? I have an alliance pally and this would be a big sigh of relief for me.

Yeah uber end game in that video but as someone wrote in the comments Early bc: Caster/ranged heaven Later BC: Melee Heaven.
Its a gamble of a class cuz you gotta crit bit when the crits hit boiiii fuckin judgment of command to crusader strike when they both crit and some how the melee hits same time as crusader strike and if THAT crits too lmao idk i think its fun af i love the burst
If I remember correctly, they screwed up the Crusader Strike pretty soon into TBC by increasing it's cooldown to 10 seconds.
I think it was the other way around. I thought it started at 10seconds and then came down later in patches.
Does anybody know if Blessing of Sacrifice procs Reckoning?
Hmm interesting I will do test
Retri on tbc was only good when he had extreme luck and got like 5 crits and 5 seal of command procs with 5 attacks :D
They dont use seal of command in tbc lol, they use seal of blood which isnt rng dependant.

Just bring back wotlk dk warrior paladins omg
he uses t2 for dmg instead of rank 14 set ;D lol. and tbc had a problem since they said ok ret falls in dps because he is a hybrid (SoC need spell dmg crusader strike melee dmg) then they removed spell dmg from the gear but did not update talents until wotlk ;D in wotlk beta i told them when they change talents like this i 1hit bosses. blue post answer was... that's not the case it's based on complicated algorythms and i made a mistake (at this time i was rank 3 ret on arenajunkies so....what?) well i played beta 1hitted bosses posted video got banned from forum ;D then they blocked paladin talents in beta to overwork them again. so yeah tbc was just fun because of 90% of teams were rogue mage priest once you beat them your ranking went up like crazy. but at the same time we had a SoC trying to dps a druid in bear form... but with 0 spelldmg on gear. (set boni aside since they could not change those) it was actually harder than in classic to win vs armor based classes. in classic i only lost to a few wl. what really made us strong in bc were those wings to burst down priests or other low armor people. while raiding i actually beat the nihilum paladin in the dps meter, despite he had the better seal of blood. simply by focussing on attack speed to get soc and double hits to proc more often. but yeah there was only 1 boss where i beat our illidan blade rogue and many raids did not even use rets saying they do no dmg. but i was pala leader so we had one ;D me
how did you optimize for atk speed? Would you say thats its definitely better to optimize for more SoC procs for dps?
@@Keyosu2 back in the day it definitely was. But only in combination with the double hit that let it proc twice. How i optimized i think i had a bit less ap/crit but more as. I had more dkp :) the rest is to long ago to remember. One more thing came to mind. A crit was 100% dmg more while an extra hit was with 30% crit 130% + chance on double hit + 30?% soc proc. Or was it 50 i dont remember. I do remember my as let me do 13 or 14 attacks instead of 10. I dont remember chance from windfury totem. But 4 chances on double hit and soc. For pvp crit ap was better. Much running between hits.

🤣 Oh Blizzhorde, such an embarrassment showing your blatant faction bias. So weak.

You're acting like warriors are top dogs in tbc lol they kinda get shit on vs vanilla.
Delusional ret paladin players think they are going to be top dogs in TBC lol, PvE they still suck ass with the equivalent of having a shaman's stormstrike+shock without windfury as their entire DPS kit and just avoid being dead weight by refreshing the other paladins judgements. As for PvP?, listing everything out:
-Reckbombs were removed, RIP Esfand fanboys
-Divine Shield can be dispelled by priests
-SPriests and Affli Locks now get a debuff lock so you cant cleanse spam everything and mana burn/drain still destroys ret paladins
-Mages get spell steal so you cant freedom and hold W to beat them
-Shaman and Druid are immortal without MS
-Hunters, rogues and warriors stay roughly the same unless you dont cleanse Viper Sting
-Everyone gets PVP trinkets this time around so you dont get to full hammer people and auto them to death
Even in WotLK ret pala still struggles in PvP because it has nothing in its kit other than pressing 1234 as fast as possible hoping the other player is garbage at his class and dies fast or play against nothing but rogues. If you're hoping pala gets good later in the game, just respec to Holy and enjoy being good from the get go.
