I appreciate your realistic approach to these reviews. To be honest, I don't trust people who say they can hear the difference between similar DACs (basically any DAC made after the year 2000), or who say they can hear the difference between hi-res audio formats. I feel like people who claim such hearing ability are most likely delusional or flexing their egos. In fact, I don't find such claims remotely impressive - I find them annoying, deceptive, and distinctly self-aggrandizing. So all of that's just to say thanks for your reviews, please keep them coming - your approach is grounded and actually informative.
this is the importance of trying it out yourself. In this horribly subjective hobby, different people might appreciate the difference differently. 11:00 The way I see bottom vs top headphone port debate, it comes down to where do you see the player being the most, and where the controls are. And now I think about it in depth, you've just convinced me not to get the HiBy R6 Gen3. On the bottom is nice if you plan on holding it a lot or keeping it in jacket pockets, but you also really want the volume controls as close to the side as possible so they can be operated with just your thumb, regardless if it uses buttons or a knob. But, having the ports on the top is way better if you plan on carrying it in your pants pockets, or if your jacket has vertical "tech pockets", in which case you also really want a volume knob at the top too. Both volume control orientations offer maximum volume control with minimum movement from their port orientations' optimal postures, making for a very comfortable usage experience. And the 3rd group that often goes ignored in this discussion, desk users. The only additional requirements from top ports is that the USB port MUST be on the bottom, and the software should offer a screen orientation flip so you can operate it while using it as a DAC. The HiBy R6 Gen3 doesn't fully satisfy any one style's ergonomics. The headphone jacks are on the bottom of the device, fine for handheld, but It also has a guarded volume knob on the top and no digital volume control on the side, so you can't adjust it while it's in any kind of pocket. Unless the transport controls can be remapped to volume, you can't easily change volume while using it. The volume knob on the top is convenient for a desk orientation, but with the headphone jacks at the same end as the type-C port it creates undue cable kinks. Yet they remembered to add an orientation flip option to make desk usage easier with top mounted ports it doesn't have? The tech specs are great, but the ergonomics of the R6 G3 make no sense.

I’m curious to know what happens to the nose floor switching between class a/b and class a. I don’t personally have any experiences suggesting the sound is perceptually different/‘better’ when running class A. But I am curious if it would veil (or draw attention to) the sound in any way here.
Good question, so I just tested it. I hear zero change in the noise floor when engaging the Class A mode. Seriously think it doesn't do anything at all.
@@SuperReview thanks for scratching that itch for me ha! That’s hilarious how that will very likely be a real selling feature for some. To each his own. Greetings from Delhi, India. Beautifully described, Pl suggest me which one to buy. R6 3Gen/M11 Plus ESS/ TempoTec-V6. Currently, I have Fiio BTR7. I am a casual listener. Thank you so much and Keep it up bro. God bless.
I tested these 2 daps side by side by listening to the same songs and same IEM for nearly 2 hrs. Music sources are local Hi res files. M6 ultra is well Controlled in overall sound quality.
I have a Hidizs AP80 Pro-X which uses a Hiby OS. My content on the SD card is organized into folders by artist and album. My library consists of over 22,000 tracks. When I import the SD card content into the internal music database, it reads 20,000 tracks, then stops. There is some content which is not read into the music database, and is not accessible using this app. All content is available by directly accessing the SD Card. The difference is that by having to access content directly from the SD card, there is no cover art available when scrolling through the artists and albums. It definitely lessens the user experience. I wish the Hiby OS would be updated to read in more tracks, but that would probably require the device to have more internal memory dedicated to the music database app.
@@SpoiledBadgerMilk I agree that if you read files directly from the SD card, there is no limit. If a file is on the card, Android will read it. The issue is with the built-in Hiby Music Database Application. When you import files from the SD card, the app only reads up to 20,000 tracks. That's the way the app behaves in my AP80 Pro-X which I bought in 2022. I can't say whether the app has been upgraded to overcome this limitation in the R6 Gen3.
@@jvokjv well if I'm not mistaken that is a limitation of hiby os not specifically that app running on Android will see any amount of files only limited by the expandable storage so 2tb.
I've received the player today. The charge was 30%. I was charging it for 5 hrs with 2A charger and it's still 90%. What is wrong? Shall I charge it in ON position?
Not sure. I always charge it while it's turned on. In the Android settings, you can configure where it stops charging (e.g. at 85%) to preserve battery longevity.
@@SuperReview Thanks. Have you figured out how much time does it take you to charge it (either fully or partially)? What's the amperage you have in your charger?
Hello, Mark, I'm really intrested in your sceptic position on daps sound differences, do you not notice difference between formats as well? And what's the point in using sony daps if they have same power and noise floor as smartphones? Watching you from Russia❤
I find 128Kbps MP3 pretty obviously compressed, but beyond that it takes pretty careful listening to hear a difference. Couldn't hear a difference with Apple lossless: ua-cam.com/video/nG8ucVranXM/v-deo.html
I use apple music exclusively. I would never get an android dap unless there is a system wide eq I can use for Apple music. Does poweramp eq work for Apple music?
Would this be overkill in terms of cost and bypassing the internal dac of this dap just to use as a transport for my main system? I'm using a smartphone connected to my external topping dac which goes into my amplifier.
The Hiby R4 is a more cost effective choice if using it as a transport is your main use case. That's my situation, however I'm considering the R6 gen 3 because I do occasionally use the analog output. And, it also has coax digital output (through a 3.5 mm jack, supply your own cable), which I would use instead of USB when using it as a transport.
Help re. moving music to micro SD card? I'm new to DAPs so... Can't seem to get the Hiby Music app to "see" the SD card. Hiby support is pretty worthless. Even if you could direct me to another video or step-by-step document would be greatly appreciated!
@@SuperReview Thanks for your time to reply. I'd tried 3 different SD cards. Finally had to reset the HiBy and start over. Bought a new SD card and it "recognized" it. In any event, a clunky system. 😏 And thanks for the review. Very helpful!
I haven't explored desktop options much, but know of the ones I've used, I really like my Drop THX AAA One amp because it turns itself on and off automatically.
There is an option to play through folders, but it won't stop at the artist and continue playing through my entire album, which is not very useful to me.
are 3rd party apps available like alternate podcast providers, you tube etc. i noticed on just about all reviews there is not mention of video clips and video watching
Can you tell me if this DAP is gapless compatible? I bought a budget DAP and had to send it back because it doesn't play gapless, which is a deal-breaker for me as it makes live albums unlistenable

Hey Mark what's up? Man, you got me all worried continuously saying all these DAPs sound the same. You seriously hear absolutely no difference between the iBasso DX300 and any of these entry/midfi players? Really? I'm thinking on pulling the trigger to get an M8 from Musicteck, but what's the point if it sounds exactly the same as any other $300 player with the exception of output power? By the way, I heard you talk about the parametric EQ. You may want to try the Lotoo Paw600 and the Lotoo Paw Gold Touch. I think those are the only players on the market that come up with that feature.
The DAPs all sound essentially the same. If I'm A-B testing specific loops of a song with both units side by side and quickly switching, I can often hear minor differences but they're not differences I'd even be confident identifying with a blindfold and are only perceptible in that careful listening scenario, so they don't matter to me. I would not make purchase decisions based on them.
@@SuperReview are you trying the same IEMs and headphones? What about sound signature? I've never tried players from Sony or Shanling, but I've heard their DAPs tend to sound a bit more "colored", adding more warmth to the signature. I did try some FiiO and Hiby players and yes, they sound analytical, specially FiiO. For example, what's your favorite IEM? Blessing 2?(Let's call it Blessing 2 for the sake of argument) If you plug in the Blessing 2 to every single player you have, I believe you'd hear some differences, not sure if you'd hear more technicalities though..... So i guess it's a matter of differences, excluding the chances of certain DAPs being better than others regardless of price. So... Out of all the expensive DAPs you've tried, besides sound signature, they all have the same level of refinement and technical abilities?
@@elbonja You might want to consider the concept of placebo and how it affects our perception and ability of discerning and evaluating qualitative nuances. I think what Mark is saying is, if you do a proper ABX test with all other parameters equal (no knowledge of sound source, same device chain, volume matched tracks etc.) you also won't be able to tell the difference between DACs/DAPs. In all other, less than ideal testing scenarios, power of placebo and/or short audible memory might make you think device A is more analytical, device B is warmer and so on. This applies to most people, at least.
@@codyghind I'm well aware of the placebo effect in music. But I did try 2 DAPs(Hiby RS2 and FiiO M11 Pro). I did hear differences, but I suppose it's a matter of interpretation knowing and understanding sound differences, not one over the other in terms of sound quality. There's a lot more to be considered; quality of the headsets, tunning of headsets, amplification, etc... I do agree with Mark on this one, but I'm still not convinced that every single DAP sound the same. As I said, I've only compared 2 DAPs and they both sound different, not day and night but I did hear a difference.
What you're saying you hear doesn't sound inconsistent with what I'm saying, please correct me: 1. If I'm A-B testing specific loops of a song with both units side by side and quickly switching, I can often hear minor differences 2. but they're not differences I'd even be confident identifying with a blindfold 3. and are only perceptible in that careful listening scenario, so they don't matter to me. 4. I would not make purchase decisions based on them.
24:33 not true. I have Tempotec V6 and had hiby r3 2002 and are QUITE apart in PRESENTATION that is V6 is tamed and relaxed while in Hiby is more in front of you and aggressive
The main selling point/reason to buy a HiBy DAP is for the Class A Amplification not using it kind of makes getting one a little silly because that's what you're paying for. I understand you don't hear a difference between Class A and Class AB but many of us out here do. I do like Class A better than Class AB however, to me there is a very audible difference and I feel kind of sad that you can not hear it because that means you're actually missing out on something that many of us can hear and have proven it to ourselves in blind AB testing... Thanks for the review because you did an excellent job of covering a lot of what this DAP can and does do. Although I think it's sad that you can't hear the difference Class A amplification brings to the table. The 5 mins or so of talking about the fake leather sticker you put on the back was kind of weird but also funny to hear you go on about it. Great review and thanks again for doing it...
Looking at the comparison the screencolor is really off. I mean it may not be super important for a DAP. But it's honestly really bad. I want the see the cover art with a reasonable color reproduction.
I am looking forward to the video of someone easily being able to identify which DAP they're listening to with a blindfold and adequate volume matching.
@@SuperReview So you’re trying to say you can’t hear the difference between a FiiO M17 and a FiiO M11s at the same volume level? Or a Astell & Kern SP3000 and a Ibasso DX170? I can go on…

Recommending the R6 Gen3 as best for streaming is a bum steer. If you rely on streaming services for your music, you will probably want to use the download for offline listening option on a portable device, and the R6 Gen3 sucks at this, you will be waiting several minutes for a streaming app to read the sd card. Yet, could you advice where you bought your leather cover for hiby?
I ordered the leather back through this company: www.therasatelier.com/
I’m curious to know what happens to the nose floor switching between class a/b and class a. I don’t personally have any experiences suggesting the sound is perceptually different/‘better’ when running class A. But I am curious if it would veil (or draw attention to) the sound in any way here.
Good question, so I just tested it. I hear zero change in the noise floor when engaging the Class A mode. Seriously think it doesn't do anything at all.
@@SuperReview thanks for scratching that itch for me ha! That’s hilarious how that will very likely be a real selling feature for some. To each his own. Looks like a good player for the most part based off of your review. I appreciate ya doing that as my curiosity was def piqued about the dedicated amp classifications.
@@SuperReview you’re awesome for checking that out for me bro, thanks!

I am using NIAGARA launcher sence 2 years now and i will probably use it for next 4 5 years if something with different approch dosent come... And i am using Poweramp as my default music player ....
Most youtubers use switched to streaming services so they shows tidal and Apple music but i like your showing Poweramp .

And if yes what is it ... I know its about preference of the people but i want to know about better quality... If its noticable.... Like having any of the DAC you mentioned in this video ... Vs phone +MOJO 2 Or IFI XDSD Grephione....
You might make video on this topic it would be great 👍🏻
24:05 is my thoughts on sound. Don't know about your particular phone, it may hiss or not get loud enough, in which case this will probably be better.
Thanks for the video. Very well done. I just got my RS lll. I put a few playlist in it and it was working fine. Today every song in the list is in alphabetical order. Do you know how to change this. I just can't figure it out. Thanks

Hiby. I click on the SD card image open the playlist Press the first song and it opens up in Hiby.

Greetings from Delhi, India. Beautifully described, Pl suggest me which one to buy. R6 3Gen/M11 Plus ESS/ TempoTec-V6. Currently, I have Fiio BTR7. I am a casual listener. Thank you so much and Keep it up bro. God bless.
Could you please compare Hiby R6 Gen3 with Shanling M3 Ultra in term of sound. With Dap is better??
Thank you so much❤
I tested these 2 daps side by side by listening to the same songs and same IEM for nearly 2 hrs. Music sources are local Hi res files. M6 ultra is well
Controlled in overall sound quality.
Hi! What do you think of the Campfire Ara?
I like it quite a bit, but hard to recommend at the MSRP over some other options. Surprisingly nice build and fit and nice imaging.
Can it play videos as well?
Hi from Spain! What do you recommend for Hifiman Ananda Stealth, Hiby R6 III, Shanling M6U or FiiO M11 Plus II? Thanks 😊
Ananda Stealth does not change any of the evaluation in this video, pick what matches your personal priorities.
Hi. Hiby devices seem to have a database limit (number of songs), was the limit lifted, or is it still there ?
Not sure, I have over 4,000 songs in my library with no issue. I assume whatever limit there is applies only to the stock app, yeah?
I have a Hidizs AP80 Pro-X which uses a Hiby OS.
My content on the SD card is organized into folders by artist and album.
My library consists of over 22,000 tracks.
When I import the SD card content into the internal music database, it reads 20,000 tracks, then stops.
There is some content which is not read into the music database, and is not accessible using this app.
All content is available by directly accessing the SD Card.
The difference is that by having to access content directly from the SD card, there is no cover art available when
scrolling through the artists and albums. It definitely lessens the user experience.
I wish the Hiby OS would be updated to read in more tracks, but that would probably
require the device to have more internal memory dedicated to the music database app.
@@jvokjv android has no such weakness. Sky's the limit if it's their it will read it.
What's the amperage you have in your charger?
how is the software ? I have the Fiio X5, it's very very slow
I already have this dap, do you recommend me to buy another dap like sony am2? Or i save that money? Thanks
I got mine on order how is ur Hiby
Any chance you can give some comparison to the RS6 and RS2 ?
Hello, Mark, I'm really intrested in your sceptic position on daps sound differences, do you not notice difference between formats as well? And what's the point in using sony daps if they have same power and noise floor as smartphones? Watching you from Russia❤
I find 128Kbps MP3 pretty obviously compressed, but beyond that it takes pretty careful listening to hear a difference. Couldn't hear a difference with Apple lossless: ua-cam.com/video/nG8ucVranXM/v-deo.html
Hi, can this record from audio in via a standard stereo TRS cable?
I use apple music exclusively. I would never get an android dap unless there is a system wide eq I can use for Apple music.
Does poweramp eq work for Apple music?
No, don't believe there's any way for Poweramp EQ to affect Apple Music. Wavelet probably does.
Wavelet definitely does
@@shaunbrady15 Have you tried wavelet on this device for Apple music?
@@h1a8 not this device specifically, but other android daps and phones I have. Should be the same.
MSEB has been excellent on my RS8. UAPP is king it you want a traditional eq, but it doesn't work with Apple music I think. Wavelet is your best bet
Would this be overkill in terms of cost and bypassing the internal dac of this dap just to use as a transport for my main system? I'm using a smartphone connected to my external topping dac which goes into my amplifier.
This R6III could be found for 450 USD two weeks ago. So it was the best price of it.
Eject the memory card and use an external reader. Reading a card through Android devices never works for me.
@@SuperReview Thanks for your time to reply. I'd tried 3 different SD cards. Finally had to reset the HiBy and start over. Bought a new SD card and it "recognized" it. In any event, a clunky system. 😏 And thanks for the review. Very helpful!
do you think this player will be able to open isodynamic headphones like audeze m-100 or something more expensive
I don't understand the question.
@SuperReview enough power for full-size magnetic planar headphones?
Yeah, this will power all headphones I have.
@@SuperReview thank you 👍
Most DAPs sound the same only if you don't use the EQ or MSEB on a device like this.
Yep.
Hi Mark, what are your thoughts on desktop setup?
I haven't explored desktop options much, but know of the ones I've used, I really like my Drop THX AAA One amp because it turns itself on and off automatically.
@@SuperReview ok so SQ wise, is there a noticeable difference between the thx and your dongle?
Desktop amp has a knob, and knobs sound better.
Can you review the nw-zx707 next?
It’s been a while since you review sony DAP.
Sony won't respond to me and I'm not confident I would love it, so hesitant to spend my own money on it.
Are you sure there is no "play through album" option under player setting? I just tried it on my Hidizs AP80 Pro, which utilizes Hiby's OS
There is an option to play through folders, but it won't stop at the artist and continue playing through my entire album, which is not very useful to me.
Does it have a microphone for things like voice search
Not on the device, you'd need to use a headphone with a mic cable.
are 3rd party apps available like alternate podcast providers, you tube etc. i noticed on just about all reviews there is not mention of video clips and video watching
It's Android with the Play store, you can download anything on it.
Can you tell me if this DAP is gapless compatible? I bought a budget DAP and had to send it back because it doesn't play gapless, which is a deal-breaker for me as it makes live albums unlistenable
Yes, it is.

Dunno.
Can you Connect the Dap to a usb Hub to listen to SACDS in a hdd?
Sorry not sure.
Blessing 2?(Let's call it Blessing 2 for the sake of argument)
If you plug in the Blessing 2 to every single player you have, I believe you'd hear some differences, not sure if you'd hear more technicalities though.....
What you're saying you hear doesn't sound inconsistent with what I'm saying, please correct me:
1. If I'm A-B testing specific loops of a song with both units side by side and quickly switching, I can often hear minor differences
2. but they're not differences I'd even be confident identifying with a blindfold
3. and are only perceptible in that careful listening scenario, so they don't matter to me.
4. I would not make purchase decisions based on them.
can this play apple music? (stream & download)
Yes.
What is the reason doing a review on a digital audio player if to your mind they all sound the same? You would just read out their specs.
Well here's a 45-minute video that spends very little time reading specs, so not sure I understand your question tony.
How about the Ibasso Dx170 TIA
I had the ibasso dx170, sold it because build quality is to damn cheap, it feels like a toy, all plastic build, only thing nice about is the screen
24:33 not true. I have Tempotec V6 and had hiby r3 2002 and are QUITE apart in PRESENTATION that is V6 is tamed and relaxed while in Hiby is more in front of you and aggressive
does anyone knows if the R6III works with android auto? thank you!!!
Can I chulffle play al of my songs at the same time?
Yeah.
Which DAP is better? Hiby r6 GIII or Fiio m11s
Looking at the comparison the screencolor is really off. I mean it may not be super important for a DAP. But it's honestly really bad. I want the see the cover art with a reasonable color reproduction.
Yeah I would rank the colors R5G2 > M3 Ultra > R6G3 = M11S
So you're saying you gotta get blazed to notice the differences? lol
That'll help.
All DAP’s sound the same he says and can’t hear the differences 😆
I am looking forward to the video of someone easily being able to identify which DAP they're listening to with a blindfold and adequate volume matching.
@@SuperReview So you’re trying to say you can’t hear the difference between a FiiO M17 and a FiiO M11s at the same volume level? Or a Astell & Kern SP3000 and a Ibasso DX170? I can go on…
I am saying this: 24:22
@@SuperReview Yes, I know what you said that’s why I made the comment. Sounds like you just want people clicking on those links so you don’t want to tell them one is Better than the other lol. @@CarAudioHorizons Please make the UA-cam video that demonstrates how easily you can hear the difference, I literally would love to see it, a lot of people would love to see it. There is some skepticism you will need to anticipate to design a convincing test, but it is more needed than online comments like these ones because there are millions of them but somehow zero convincing videos, it's weird.
Recommending the R6 Gen3 as best for streaming is a bum steer. If you rely on streaming services for your music, you will probably want to use the download for offline listening option on a portable device, and the R6 Gen3 sucks at this, you will be waiting several minutes for a streaming app to read the sd card.
