I think only play chops if you can keep the grooves uninterrupted completely. That pocket is far more important though
But chops will only be chops when enveloped by the normal sensible beat
Chops serve a purpose, don't get me wrong but groove is what separates the real masters from the wannabes

I have a love hate relationship with chops. Love hearing them, then when I try to play them, I end up smacking my face with the sticks, and begin to contemplate quitting the drums. I then wake up the next morning and the cycle repeats

I’ve gotta say, as a fellow musician, it’s sad that people these days aren’t content with the groove sauce. People think fast playing is the only impressive style. This sucks because slow playing requires just as much talent as fast.
I'm a metal musician but even then I love more of the beat than the fast stuff, even when I love just, double pedal for 23 measures, I also love the slower beats that make you groove
