How I Made my Primitive Stackable Baskets for Summer Harvest
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 лип 2020
- Primitive cultures learned to use the natural materials of the environment to create tools to make life easier and help insure their survival. Today basketry is admired for the beautiful designs and intricate weaves handcrafted by skilled artisans but historically baskets were made for purposes much more important than just a home decoration.
In this video I demonstrate a simple weave that I learned to create durable and functional baskets that can be used to collect and store seeds, grains and more. I used the leaves of the Mexican blue palm (Brahea armata) which is native to northern Baja California, Mexico but other species of fan palms can also be used. The Mexican blue palm has very strong yet flexible leaves that result in a durable basket. I made two identical baskets that are stackable. Each basket took me approximately twenty hours to make. These baskets will be appearing in future videos.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Who films you?
I do. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share exactly where I go.
Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently do collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).

Все просто и без затей,но сколько же надо усидчивости и терпения!
Mr. Tarzan, I love your videos. I am so drawn to adopt some simple living into my life. I will start collecting palm leaves to copy your basket. Please keep uploading more of your beautiful art
I remember basket weaving in scouts. My scout master threw away the premade kits and had us harvest cattails from a local creek here in Arizona and do it all primitive.
Thanks for showing up this . When I’m watching your video I’m really ralexing. You making it wonderful.👍😆
Thanks for always being there.
Good Primitive Stackable Baskets for Summer Harvest
I love your videossssssss
Thank you!
Nice to see you back home at the Adobe Hut.
The hut is great!
Congratulations Chad zuber god blessed you excellent videos nice 🙏😉😘
Very cool. This material seems to have just the right stiffness to act as its own sewing needle.
Oh yeah, it's an excellent material.
@@ChadZuberAdventures But maybe reed would also work fine (for those who live more in the north).
@@FrauWNiemand As I'm watching this I'm wondering how it would do with slightly dried cattail....hmm new weekend project.
Another stellar quote of the day!
I'm sure you can get a diamond play button because many city people are curious about the primitive era and how to cook, eat, sleep, make clothes and so forth.
I've got a long way to go for that!
@@ChadZuberAdventuresand u did it 🙏
Very nice Hand work Mr. Chad
wow! Mr. creative Chad!
아이큐도 좋지만 손재주가 아주 좋습니다 ㅎㅎㅎ
Cómo siempre es súper relajante ver tus videos y de hecho un par de esas canastas se verían geniales en la finca de mi madre. Saludos.
I love how my brain feels when i make palm husk rope. I've been wanting to try basket making with pine needles. Great stacking basket designs, so many possibilities. Very motivating video and great camera work, Brother. - Mike in Coronado
This video is pure ASMR.
100%
I admire the strength and control you have over your weaving. I'm probably most impressed that both baskets are the same size. That's quite hard to do, in my experience!
In fact, I have the same issue with basket making most guys have and you've avoided it: most of the baskets I make are cylinders, knee-high and as big around as I can reach. Think washing machine drum. I've really tried to not make baskets that shape and they come out that shape and size anyway. It's like it's an instinct or something. You watch videos of guys making baskets around the world and no matter what material they use or what weaving technique, somehow all their baskets are the size and shape of washing machine drums.
Hahaha! Seriously? I never noticed that. Perhaps this material is just easier to work with.
I still have a hard time tying my shoes... AMAZING !!
Your living great life during 2020 unlike people who did never feel interested in nature i hada great oife during 2020 not locked like modern mqn primitve life during 2020 for me beautiful year one of the Best in my life
2020 was a great year for people living away from the cities.

Muito obrigado! Forte abraço!
Beautiful.
Excellent therapy work! 👍👍
Do you think it will work with reeds that we have here in Sweden?
Yes, Great therapy indeed... I'm not sure what species of reeds you are referring to but it probably will work. I've made the same kind of basket with dry cattail leaves and it worked well, although not quite as durable as this species of palm.
I love you video im Kyrgyzstan country! Thanks wor you video!
Greetings to you!!! Blessings to you!
@@ChadZuberAdventures 👍
Damn, those Baskets look sick!
Very hard to craft
Thanks! They were quite easy to make, just take a long time.
@@ChadZuberAdventures but i would rather make a ceramic bowl. Pretty solid, easy to craft and just take like 1 day?
@@Unknown-ui4wr Some foods are best stored in containers that allow air circulation so that they dehydrate and do not mold. Clay pots are heavy to carry and break easily. The best practice would have been to have both.
Yes, there are advantages to having both clay bowls and baskets.
Thank you for the close ups!!! Those really helped.
My pleasure! This is the kind of thing that must be clearly shown to understand.
brilliant work. you make it look so simple. but you are too good!!❤❤❤👍👍👍
It is simple, just very time consuming.
@@ChadZuberAdventures but you are being very modest!!! you are a super man indeed

Always grateful for these videos! The 10 second mark, that rock formation looks very useful if it's as big as I think it is. Maybe not to shelter in the middle, but at least a storage area if you make a roof?
