    What makes your mystery crochet videos so much fun (besides trying to figure out what the pattern is) is talking back to the screen trying to figure out the pattern stitches with you.

    I have only recently found this page but I’ve learnt so much about old patterns. It’s been incredibly fascinating. Thanks for struggling through this for us! And thanks to your son for picking out such a fun pattern.

    Before it was a "hashtag" it was a "pound" sign, and before that it was called a tic-tac-toe sign. But, to everyone's delight, the star for *69 has always just been called a star! It's a beautiful snowflake doily. Your nails looked great! Love & hugs

    Star and Asterisk, to me, have always been interchangeable. I can appreciate that it's not the same for everyone, however what surprised me was that you didn't seem to notice or question the asterisk/blob!

    Does your son crochet? That's how I learned, I had knee surgery and my mom came down to help me and she was crocheting. I asked her how she did that, she showed me how to make a chain and I 've taken off from there. I just wish I could hold my yarn like you do. But I have a blast. Thanks to UA-cam and people like you. I love your videos. My sister tells her friends that her brother is the Rainman of crochet. Cause I'm constantly crocheting. I just call it yarning. I love it and it is VERY relaxing. Thanks for the great videos. I have an old book my sister gave me. Dainty Work for Pleasure and Profit. I'm sure you've seen it. Very interesting and beautiful patterns. Thanks again. Dan

    OH I'd love to do this now but I've just started the 1865 timeless shawl. What a fantastic design this mystery pattern is. I wish I could keep up with your out put. Who else is in a crochet at snails paces group. 🐌🧶

      That shawl is fantastic! I'm currently finishing off the 1864 pelerine. I'm more of a 'crochet at lightning speed ignoring food, drink and other needs' kinda person. Helps that I only just started digging into crochet as a hobby and I'm SO excited. But I think your approach is better - slow and relaxing, not breakneck speed and back pain inducing!

      I'm 75 and learned to crochet in 1963 at age 14. I seem to remember an asterisk being referred to as a star back then. But I could be totally wrong, lol. Now you know why I gave up trying to follow vintage patterns even then. I was teaching myself to crochet from the little 10 cent book had been given by my mother at the time. She had never learned to crochet but had said I think that my grandmother who had crocheted did call it a star. My grandmother had died when I was 11. She blind so never told me anything about crochet. But mom had given me her grandma's hooks when I was 14 and wanted to try from the book. That book covered embroidery, crochet, think knitting and tatting. My dream was tatting which my mother learned from my grandfather who was a master tatters. But she never succeeded in teaching me because she would not slow down when showing me the movements. I finally learned to tat from a book that came out in the 90s with good pictures. Also from Georgia Seitz who taught many of us to tat online in the 90s and later. I have a hand injury along with essential tremor which now prevent me from tatting. I made doilies from the magic crochet magazines. But I gave up on vintage patterns even when they had pictures with them, lol.

      @@Anne5440_ I'm 65 and I too, for a very long time, called an asterisk a 'star'. I love tatting. I tried to learn while watching someone doing it but it wasn't something I managed to master. I love to do patterns in vintage/old books.
      Thank you for the tip on Georgia Seitz. I found her on UA-cam.

    I’m so glad mystery crochet is back! I love these segments! A question: has anyone here ever picked apart an old piece of crochet to figure out the pattern?

    • @thatroger8548
      @thatroger8548 11 місяців тому +6

      Not picked apart, figured out! I was on holiday in a B&B in the Cotswolds and I had a feverish cold & could not sleep. They had crochet coasters with peaked edges under nick-knacks all over the house. I was up all night working out how to do that pattern especially the peaks. Long before the days of mobile phones with cameras, so I have no photos but somewhere, in one of my many pattern notebooks, are the notes I kept as I was working out the pattern.

    This was the first time I actually made the pattern myself before seeing the picture. I didn't nail it but got close! I think the illustration of the finished product from the book shows that I should have lifted the treble crochets higher, which would have made the picot chains seem closer to the clusters, but I treated them like bauble stitches instead. I really like this one!❤

It’s a good reminder that things that seem obvious to you aren’t always as obvious as you think they are.

    I think each picot has to go to each chain 4 space. The first three then do one but go into the chain four space then do next three picot singularly under the chain four space, chain three and do it again in next chain four space. From the picture it will be closer together rather thatn being big the way you were doing it.

  • @claire_mcm
    @claire_mcm 11 місяців тому

    At the end of row one the pattern is using a method so that the thread is positioned correctly for the start of next row without the need to turn the work. Instead of the chain 4 and slip stitch which leaves the thread on the the left hand side of the space, make a double treble (equivalent of 4 chain) into the 4th chain made at the start of round one which leaves the tread on the right hand side of the space. At the end of round one you would have seven spaces made of 4 chains and one made of a double treble. I’ve noticed this method on other doily patterns, it’s a useful method to remember.

    Yeah! Keep me out of trouble for a while! 😊 That is a gorgeous pattern! Thank you! I think its 4 rounds not three. Try doing the third then do the 4th by attaching to the 2or 3togs around each group of them?

      Well, you can change troubles for trebles.

      I think I figured it out. 3rd row Iput a sc in 1st chain4. Ch4, sc in2nd ch-3rd ch and base like a picot 3x, then 4trtog, ch4 sc in 2nd 3rd base1x, 4trtog, ch4 sc in 2nd- 3rd 3x, sc in ch4of previous row all in next ch4 space,ch4 to span ch2 to next set. repeat 7 more times. Seems to be working well. I'll send pic when done. Arthur is mad and he's back with a vengeance so I dont know how long it will be. Sorry.🥹 At no time did I turn my work.

    Yay a new mystery pattern. To make it work I did american double trebles and english double crochet, but I always use pattern instructions as suggests rather than directions.

    Very interesting but I thought instead of 4 chains for the picot just ch 3 and see if that works better for the picots.

    Thank you, that was really interesting, and I liked your first effort even if it was “wrong” ❤

    I don't know if I'm talking out of turn but thought that "repeat from star" meant repeat from the asterisk in the written pattern.

    The asterisk is your star.

    Goodness me I'm yelling quietly at the phone the star on the pattern (I have always called * a star) 😂😂😂

    I would not have gotten as far as you did before I would have ripped it out and walked away from it. I so appreciate your willingness to keep on trying. ?1 Is there something with the older patterns that suggests turning your work? I was confused why you did that. I love watching you figure these older patterns out. ?2 Now that you've seen the picture, do you think you could do the pattern just by the picture? (That could be a new thing to figure it out by the picture alone?) Thank you for doing these videos. Please keep going. 😊

    Is there anyway you can show us the written pattern so we can do this along with you?

    I occasionally take a pattern that makes small items and make them thicker yarns to see what happens. Sometimes pretty cool, sometimes total fail. Looking at this it makes me think this pattern should have had a fine thread.
