    Chunky yarn is expensive. I had a lot of doilly thread. Most was given to me. There are lots of things you can make with thread. Theres earings, coasters, and what I am currently making is Christmas ornaments. Just make granny squares into cornucopias. Use ribbon to hang them in your tree. Put candy or tiny gifts in them. Also with the worsted weight, you can use more than one strand of yarn together to make it thicker. Get creative. Anything that is a tread can be crochet. Embroidery floss is popular in the craft department and it can be crochet into small apps to adorn other projects. Some crocheters use small scraps of yarn to stuff amigaromi. Nothing is wasted.

    I just started a mosaic square afghan with Red Heart Black-Ruby Red Granny Square yarn. It's already looking stunning. I'll finish it with a dark cream color. Super stoked!

    Your idea of the 90s is actually the 80s as someone that was in junior high in high school in the 90s we never watch geometric shapes like that. It was more hammer pants, natural tones and bellbottoms and tight shirts and stash busting. I don’t see that ever happening. And the reason why people are not buying yarn cause they can’t afford it. How do I stores are going out of business the same reason big box store is going out of business people are not buying.

      Maybe we are both right? I was a young kid in the 90s, and all of my memories are Nickolodeon and Lisa Frank. I have pictures of myself in the 90s wearing stuff like teal checkered print jumpsuits and brightly colored knitted sweaters with geometric shapes. So maybe I mean 90s if you were 8 years old. 😂🤷‍♀️

    Stash busting leftovers, I love to make baskets. Multiple yarns same weight, attached with magic knots and wound into cakes, then using 3 strands of yarn from 3 different cakes and a size N hook and you can make some of the coolest baskets and totes. I've never had any problems finding new owners for these to give them to. They are fun and very handy.

    I think you nailed it with so many of these! I have been doing mosaic since 2023 and watching the groups and pattern options grow exponentially! Destashing is gaining popularity. This is now where I go shopping for my yarn as my own stash decreases. Actively finishing all my WIPs and UFOs. Calling that a win!

    Definitely agree with mosaic. I am trying that technique this year. I think bold colors leans more into eighties early nineties, but you are right about the 90's having 70's styling. I hope we bring color back into the home decor world. Beige is sad. =(

    i agree with the stash busting, i'm challenging myself to use what I have first (this is after I realized how much I have after orgnizing it), also to finish up my wips which honestly I don't have allot but they do take up space. Tunisian used to be called the Afgan stitch when I was growing up, it makes a very warm blanket I have one in my closet that I got when I was a teenager, 45 ish years ago, your right it will never go totally away, I'm not a fan of changing colors so I don't know the mosaics will be for me.

    What’s the difference between mosaic and tapestry?

    • @woodlandstitchcraft
      @woodlandstitchcraft  3 дні тому +3

      Tapestry uses color changes to create the pictures, where you use different colors within the same row to build upon each other and create images. Mosaic uses an overlay technique where you create one row of color, and then the next row work with a different color and stitches worked over the row below. (I probably should have included the word overlay when I was speaking about it as overlay mosaic is the proper term for the exact technique I am referring to.) I hope that helps!

  • @OhJodi69
    @OhJodi69 3 дні тому +2

    The 90's were not bright colors, patterns, neons. That was the 80's. By 92 there were actually darker, more muted colors. You can really see it in cosmetics.......matte brown or wine lipsticks, nails, and eye makeup, fashions often looked like the 1930's with longer dresses and skirts with small florals. Big hair finally went away. Home interiors were hunter green, burgundy, dark blue, gold. I think we will see more browns, greys, and darker colors, overall. Lighter colors will look more natural.
    Trends also follow the economy. Brighter colors when it's good......the '20's, 50's, 60's, 80's, darker when it's not so great.....30's 40's, later 70's, 90's . Since the '90's it's harder to pinpoint, because our economy has been so weirdly up and down, since Sept 11 '01. the big crash in '08......and the iPhone and smart phones since '07 plays a big part in how quickly trends come and go. That's why there's "fast fashion", now.

    • @woodlandstitchcraft
      @woodlandstitchcraft  3 дні тому

      You might be right. I'm probably mixing the colors and styles from 70s and 80s together and maybe showing my age a little bit. I was a young kid in the 90s so I'm thinking (and seeing being made now) a lot of things with vibes like Nickolodeon, Lisa Frank, Clueless, The Spice Girls and things like that.

    I have no idea whether your predictions are right or not, but I did find an interesting. I am 81 years old, and have been crocheting and knitting for a very long time. I have also done a lot of quilting, but gave it up when my Vision made using a rotary cover a dangerous activity. I am now legally blind, but still crochet, and Knit,.
    3 1/2 years ago, I sold my house and moved into a small one bedroom apartment. My stash has been greatly reduced, and I’m in the process of reducing it further. In fact today, I am going to be working on getting rid of some yard, while During other others in tall white cabinets. I will be putting a basket of yarn that I no longer want to use out for the community I live in. One of my grandsons recently helped me get rid of three large garbage bags full of Darren and I no longer wanted, or had room for it.
    I have to say that I am and how large son statues are. In fact, I have seen dashes that have practically taken over an entire house.. I often wonder what is the point of having more yarn than an LYS contain. Having such a large Tash seems excessive to me , because it’s obvious that no one could ever use that much yarn in two lifetimes, let alone one.
    On the other hand, my philosophy is “ to each your own”… it really isn’t any of my business how much yarn a crafter my own.
    Thanks for looking into a really interesting topic. It was something I had never even thought about, because to tell the truth, I don’t pay any attention to trends. My taste in your does change from time to time, but I think that it’s a very normal Thing. Because my vision has progressively become more impaired, I find that I’d prefer certain colors and waste of yarn that need crocheting or knitting easier for me.
    Sandy, from Cincinnati

    We are more mindful, more demure…😂I think that the market has just become saturated with indie dyers, and people like UA-camrs and pattern designers coming out with their own brands of yarn too! People are still buying from what I see at fiber fests and shop hops and local shops I’ve visited this year but it is spread out .

    • @woodlandstitchcraft
      @woodlandstitchcraft  3 дні тому

      I think that's probably true. I am mostly speaking of online shops shutting down as I don't have a lot of experience with festivals and yarn shops. So happy to hear those are still doing well! I have just seen a lot of general, not just in the yarn world, talk about "over consumption" and trends like "de-influencing" going around so that was (ironically) influencing my opinion! 😂
