Seen the aux belts thrown time and time again on this engine, when the timing goes out it can cause damage to the cylinder head by shattering the hydraulic lifter seats. Very good engine when running right 👍
With the Aux belt on these engines it is crucial it is serviced properly and only the genuine volvo belts used . It MUST be changed every 54000 miles and then at the second belt change the tensioner is changed also together with the cambelt . It should have had the lot changed at 108000 miles , but it seems it wasn't . The valves are perpendicular to the pistons so very unlikely to be "bent" however they go straight up and bend the rocker arms and also force the hydraulic lifter sideways and snap off the lifter bores ruining the head . People often fit a used head and then find it doesn't run properly. They will spend hours figuring out why but they never do find out ... because the cam lobes are forced around on the camshaft ! ( this protects the bottom end ) The best repair is a good used head and camshafts . OR a good used engine complete might be the best alternative , but fit it out with a new cambelt , aux belt and all tensioners using genuine volvo parts if you don't want it happening a third time . Volvo Water pumps are bomb proof I wouldn't worry about that . If you do DO NOT fit a non volvo waterpump it WILL fail and ruin all your good work ...... The only water pumps that I have changed on these are the non genuine ones which some unknowledgeable garage has fitted and thrown a perfectly good volvo one away ! Good Luck ...
I ran an identical one of those for 3 years. Utterly faultless and loaded with kit. Quick too. That one even has adaptive cruise control (the black plastic square on the grill is a give away), collision warning and emergency brake assist. Fixed up that car is worth £5K all day long. Well worth fixing up and selling on.
If it has rockers, check that it hasn't a bent or broken one first, is my suggestion guys. Normally it's built in for the rockers to bend before the valve.
It’s not the rockers that bend. The aluminium seats that hold the hidraulic lifters are the ones that are prone to brake.also if that happens, the valves bend too.I’m 100% sure that that engine has internal faults and did not make it in on piece after such a breakdown. At least one hidraulic lifter rocker and seat are broken. The head must come off and checked for cracks. It can be welded and remachined on cnc. Also check the valves on the cnc machine and the cam axles of bent also. The internal damage depends on atvwhat speed the belt snapped. Put everything back together and obigatory new tensioner and original volvo accesories belt.It is designed to snap in half and it does not get shredded like the aftermarket ones. The shedded pieces can get throwned into the timing belt and that is what causes the culprit. Not sure that the new engine got a new tensioner after the incident.Volvo recommend checking the tensioner and belt every 20.000-30.000 km for wear and play and replace if necessary
My brother has a v50 dw10 2.0hdi psa engine I beleave, hald his timing belt teeth got stripped, turns out the rockers have a weak point so will fail before the valves bend, fitted new rockers, new belt, new water pump and its running sweet as a nut, again dunno if this is different because it's a d5
Happy Belated birthday Rob, hope you had a good one. Thanks guys for another insightful video. Kind of makes you wary of going to a garage if they cant even get the right part numbers for repairs, shocking !!!
Used carvertical the other day for the first time going by your recommendations from previous videos. Car was spot on and now the father has bought a berlingo multispace so thanks for the tip 👍🏻
Thanks guy's, quality upload as usual we as avid followers now by know we're always guaranteed quality content.Always nice to see a different motor on the channel, always appreciated and happy belated birthday Rob.
Rob, I've just been through exactly what you're doing on my 5 cylinder Volvo. That aux belt shredding is a really really common issue. Unfortunately it doesn't just bend a valve, it knocks a little bit off the head. Wouldn't be surprised if you're gonna have to drop a couple of grand on a new head.
£800 is a bargain, I rebuild salvage Volvos and the front end parts are well over £1k on the used market, dashboard & airbag kit is £500+, etc etc. You'll get more than your money back on Copart as it's a very high spec vehicle, it also has radar cruise control which is a very rare option. Aux belt failures are a common 2.4 D3/D4/D5 issue unfortunately, there are many on salvage auctions for the same reason. If any D5 owners are reading this, change your aux belt, AC belt & tensioners every 2 years and it'll go on forever.
Happy belated birthday Rob I can't.believe I can't wait for your videos now from some one who can't drive and wasn't interested in cars .Cheers Chris and Rob you are legends
I've had this exact problem with a D5: the alternator freewheel pulley seized which threw off the aux belt which in turn cut through the plastic cambelt cover & grenaded the engine. Apparently this is quite a common fault👍👍
Back in the day, a diy mechanic wouldn't think twice about lifting a head to change a valve. The water pump is a metal blade I believe so less critical to change if the bearings feel OK. I had a specialist change my (2.5 T5) cambelt and he warned that the aux belts (alternator and A/C) often get caught up in the cambelt if they fail, so changing the 2x aux is as important as changing the cam belt itself. Easy job though.
They are only bullet proof if the auxiliary belt and tensioner is changed at 56k and again with the timing belt etc at 108k. The Aux belt tensioner was a weak point and modified some years ago. It the auxiliary belt breaks due to a duff tensioner it often gets caught in the bottom toothed cog for the timing belt and drawn in damaging timing belt valves and can also snap the tensioner mounting off of the crank case. Still brilliant cars but a bit growly at low speed.
Love a d5 engine. Have a v50 with the 2.4 D5 in it. Have had it from 30k and it’s now on 160k. Think the engine will go forever but electrics will eventually be the end for it
pull rocker cover off, the casting around the buckets will be damaged, there is a place that repairs and supplies these heads, autotech cylinder heads in cornwall
I had aC30 with that 5cylinder diesel and it was a rocket ship! Hope you had a good birthday Rob and thanks to you and Chris for more great (and honest) content 👌😀
I’ve had exactly the same thing happened to me, it was the alternator pulley. You can change them out if you’ve got the right tool, you don’t have to buy a whole new alternator. I never paid attention to the fact that the belt was jumping around a bit just before it went, luckily enough I got away with it.
Nice to meet you yesterday Rob at Dave Patrick’s. Both of us will be watching whilst eating dinner. Keep up the good work both of you, and if you need any genuine VW group parts 👍
What an awesome volvo , takes me back to my youth , l was in North London doing stuff , l was with a Social worker & he had a 2.1 litre Volvo , driving down the road & went over a hump , it rose up & down on hydraulic suspension that made my day chris & rob I felt like l was in a " roller" haha haha .& that was back in the 70's. I am surprised you are not going to work on a great car but as you say about waying up the pro's & con's. , if it was me l would put in the line, a full option car , people love it..... Enough waffling & back to you guy's 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Have you guys considered doing a relative compression test with a scope before? Great way to check the balance between all cylinders rather than exact pressures, only takes about 5 - 10 mins to setup. I'm old school but have started doing this myself for diagnostic work. Cheers 👍
Had a 205 gti 1.9 with a bent vale in the head, tried to fit a new valve grinded it in to seat well but head was still know good maybe hair line crack? So in the end just brought second head, ran like a dream after! Good luck with the volvo rob chris! 👍
This is a well known issue on this Volvo diesel engines, the "fan belt" break and get tangled in the cambelt. Online you can buy a aftermarked "gadget" for 10-20 pound, who will prevent this disaster. It was a construction defect in Volvos 5cyl diesel engines between 2001-2017, the plastic cover for the cambelt is to weak.
Happy Birthday Rob. That happened to me when I replaced an alternator. 6 rib belt 5 rib pulley on the new alternator. It was a road side repair I didn’t notice. When that 6th rib got cut off the rest of the belt the loop grabbed the AC clutch and yanked it out of the compressor and bent the idler pulley. Even one rib is very strong. Great video great car those 5 cylinders engines are legends.
Happy belated birthday Rob 🎂 Excellent content, very informative!! I've got a D5 XC90... Think I'll be on to Mr volvo for a aux belt and tensioner tomorrow!! 🤔 Easiest repair for that one is a complete 2nd head, as another commenter has said he's got one £100 posted 👍
That's what gets Clio 172 and 182s as well. The belt interval is 5 years but I checked the aux belt at 3 years and it was close to snapping. Shame the wrong belt was fitted which cause the eventual damage but love how you guys stay positive 👍
Quite a few different makes of cars have suffered the same failure. From memory my last Volvo V70 D5 was 8yrs or 100k miles for both belts but having seen this problem I changed the Aux belt @ half that mileage. It must have been an independent repairer that did it last time because Volvo Quoted a neighbour of mine £5k but after a bit of persuasion Volvo did cough up half as the car had full Volvo service history. Having run Volvo's for hundred's of 1000's miles it's worth insisting on genuine parts even down to bulbs expensive but they last much longer. Pity your probably not going to repair it but I can understand why keep up the good work
Yep, it was a big problem on the 1.9dCi Renault engines. The aux belt used to smash through the flimsy plastic timing belt cover and get snagged up in the timing belt, pulling it off or stripping teeth. Mitsubishi L200 balance shaft belts do the same thing.
I think as long as it’s just valve damage, that’s still worth fixing. There’s plenty of second hand heads for sale on eBay for this engine around £500. It’s got to be worth £2500 fixed, wouldn’t be a massive profit in it but it’s probably only a days job .
Another great 👍 video...a bit of a mileage warning ⚠️ for your subscribers...my previous motor a DS3 was written off , I had owned it for 4 years and consistently covered 20k per year in it ....its now been repaired and back on the road ..at the time of Mot May 2020 it had covered 86k I have a service bill from August 2021 showing 92k and at time of accident in December 2021 it was 114k...the vehicle has been Mot in March 2022 showing 87k...the accident was rear end damage and it still drove ok...moral for subscribers whos knowledge is prehaps limited vehicles which have constantly done a higher mileage and then do very little before an mot ...always cross check for service bills or service stamps in the book
I wondered when you'd get a Volvo on the channel 😎 those 5 cylinder engines are bulletproof but the belts are the main thing to watch out for, especially the crack to AC belt and tensioner, which should be replaced every 5years/54k. If you do get it sorted, make sure you put genuine belts and tensioners on and also get a genuine water pump also as pattern water pumps will fail a lot sooner. It's likely been a recon engine that's been fitted but the belts hadn't been done and it's let go again. Aside from that, great car to drive 👌🏻
If I was the owner watching this I'd be back to the garage who fitted that chewed up aux belt for an explanation. Human error but who's payed the price. Great content as usual guys
I once had a friendly chat with a traffic policeman, and asked him ‘would you ever buy an ex police car?’ He says, ‘not a Volvo. Some of those are on their third engine’. Theirs would be D5. I think it’s something to do with Volvo creating a diesel from an original petrol block, or the fundamental imbalance of a 5 Cylinder…great video 😀
Haven't even started watching the video, but love any video when taking a gamble is in the title ☺️ Rob is desperate to get home 😂😂😂 Sorry it was a fail, fingers crossed for the auction 🤞🤞
Hi guys keep us informed as to whether it sells or not please, I always drive diesel cars and I’m always interested in what caused the damage and you both sorted that problem out but if it doesn’t sell and you decided to repair the engine it would be nice to see you working on a Diesel engine for a bit of variety, great post as usual guys, can’t always win them all
What a travesty. Trashed engine for the sake of putting the wrong belt on. Those D5 engines are normally bullet proof.Neighbour of mine has one in his V70. Bought the car in 2004 and still runs it. Now has over 210K on the clock and still runs strong. Great video.
These engines can break the casting in the head where the cams caps bolt. Doesn't sound like it when it is running but worth a look under the rocker cover before making a plan maybe?
Love going on UA-cam and seeing u 2 have done another video makes me smile. I'm no mechanic but seeing u and Chris showing everyone how you make your living is brilliant. 💫
Personally I think the replacement engine was not "run in " properly but who knows ,you investigated the issue and cutting your loses and still smiling have a great weekend and happy birthday rob 🎂
Nice Car but parts too expensive and as you both agreed. You just don't have the time at the moment to deal with it. There will be some Volvo Enthusiast out there that will like you. Take a chance and bring it back to life. 👍👍
That’s an interesting one. Would have loved to see this turned around and repaired but totally understand your decisions as it would definitely cost more than the vehicle Iis possible worth. Brilliant work and thanks for sharing this with us take care
My d5 S60 ate the water pump and munched the engine. I was always told these things were bullet proof. When I took off the belt cover and found it loose I was gutted. The belt had been changed. Maybe someone put a crap quality pump on it or something. But still. Loved that Volvo. Apart from the ludicrous turning circle!
Some you win some you loose !!! Well done guys, love to see taking them chances !! Nothing ventured nothing gained !! Makes a great video! As always fantastic video, respect to you both.
Seems an odd habit we have in the country...wishing a good time when you just got another year older. As a man who likes tradition...HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I was looking forward to this video, being a Volvo man through and through, but a borderline decision. Hope another one comes up in the future. Thanks for the video guys. Cheers, Bob
I loved the video, I just the other day sold my 2011 Volvo c30 T5 R-type 2011 with over 230ooo km and I previously had a Volvo XC 70 2004 both with a gas power 5 cylinder. Those engines and cars are totally indestructible I called the XC70 a tank, they never let me down .
If it happened to the new engine also,i woyld first check the alternator’s pulley. They tend to jam st some point and might worth change it.I’m pretty sure that when they swapped the new engine in,they’ve only uses the block and the head,or both, but kept the auxiliaries like starter, alernator, injectors, diesel pump, turbo, etc
these volvo diesels are solid engine. i have come from a 320d bmw to a d3 s60 volvo and both great engines but the volvo so far has been the most solidly built and easier to work on compared to bmw which is very tight in the engine bay.
I ran exactly the same as this Volvo, same spec apart from mine was manual. I could do snake pass faster in the Volvo than I could in my 330d. I whacked loads of miles on it and it was epic.
Great video as always lads, this would be a good car to put through Copart and for us to watch it live and see what it goes for, I think it would make a good video? Looking forward to Saturdays already ❤️👍🏻
Happy belated birthday Rob, mines the 14th. Always amazing how fast you two diagnosed the fault. Different video, I thought is was really interesting. Hope Chris bought the 🎂 🥮 on Friday.
Hi Rob/Chris - Brilliant video - I have a Volvo V70 D5 - Rob they are 2.4 litre (Not 2.2) - On Friday I am changing the cam belt and serpentine belt. I have just checked the serpentine belt because of the problem you found (6pk) and yes the one I have is a 5pk - Many thanks for the "heads up" on that - Take care and keep up the great work - Kind regards Clay.
Just shows how a proper diagnosis gets you to the correct conclusion. Even if you had asked the Garage first, you would probably still end up running a compression check. Hope it doesn't sell so we can see it pulled apart 'in the time margins'
Not happy rob I know it’s a really big time job and a bit of money on parts but it’s a great content and that’s what you guys are the best at on UA-cam p.s. happy birthday
My 2016 2.0 diesel mondeo is touching 140k....if its anything like my last couple if mondeos its just ran in! Good, long, informative video...hopefully you will get your money back...
Nice motor thanks for the video as usual chaps. Just read someone comment about you should keep quiet....I can't believe some people I for one would just like to say I appreciate all the hard work you and Chris's put in to making these videos for us alot keep up the great work don't worry about the wallys.
First off (I am viewing this video on the 14th) belated "Happy Birthday" ROB!! I found the video interesting, and reminded me of using the diesel compression kit when I worked as a mechanic at an agricultual engineers many years ago, doing the same with tractors!!! All the best with the car aution. Cheers from Lincolnshire.
A good tip i was taught, When removing glow plugs.. Use a small torque wrench, set it to LOOSEN, and set the torque to 35nm... Be real easy when undo-ing the plugs... and the trick is, to never get that torque wrench to click.. Glow plugs can snap at around 40nm.. so if you have the wrench set to 35.. and your super careful, not to make it click.... You will NEVER snap a glow plug :) Ive done HUNDREDS of em.. never snapped 1... with this method... The torque wrench just acts as a guide, so you dont put too much Umph into it... So removing any risk of snapping one :)
i Really love the V60 Rob,reliable and stylish and its Swedish afterall! In this case its the owners fault for not servicing it and i know the things that hold the belt do break easily. Great video as always Rob! :D
Nice video fellers in my opinion that T5 motor is bullet proof Rob I’d love to see you and Rob save this car,as you said it’s fully loaded 😉 come on don’t hand about do it do it 😂😉
I tend to follow your channel regularly. I’d be very interesting to see how easy or difficult it will be to fix this issue. I’m an Audi / VW driver through & through. So to see a V60 D5 diesel being fixed, would be interesting 👍
Just an observation, the headlights could do with a bit of restoration.(Bit hazy.)Headlight restoration kit would fix those.Happy birthday Rob!!🎉🎉🥂🥂🥂🍾🍾🎂🎂🎂🎂👍👍🦘🦘🦘🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

It's a proper double act now Rob 💥👌👏😊

Wouldn’t mind watching you guys repair that engine. It’s a little change from all the bodywork vids
Do we all agree this is a great channel? These guys are superb….. thx guys

Yeah a mate got slightly wrong width alternator belt which knocked off the timing belt 😣
Thanks Rob/Chris -- real interesting one, a real whodunnit but you guys nailed the culprit !!
I'm weighing in a 04 d5 engine complete and running , could pull the head if you need spares off it . £100 posted.

As a Volvo fan, I enjoyed this video as I do all your videos. I look forward to all the upcoming videos. Keep them coming guys.

Wasn’t any. But I’m fairly sure the tanks been drained now.
Nice and quick job guys ! Congratulations to your birthday Rob🥂🎂🥳
had one exact same, there is a revised tensioner, the head gets destroyed when the belt skips a few teeth

I'm actually hoping that it doesn't sell at auction to see you repair it sometime 😃. I like the mechanical stuff as well as body work.

Very interesting video Rob just shows fitting the wrong part be it ever so simple can have catastrophic consequences!
Haven't even started watching the video, but love any video when taking a gamble is in the title ☺️
Rob is desperate to get home 😂😂😂
Sorry it was a fail, fingers crossed for the auction 🤞🤞
Your films just get better and better, it can be a matter of time before we see you and Chris on the TV.
Nice Car but parts too expensive and as you both agreed. You just don't have the time at the moment to deal with it.
There will be some Volvo Enthusiast out there that will like you. Take a chance and bring it back to life. 👍👍
Good content on diagnosing the problem on the car Rob and Chris. Great Content Rob and Chris.
Chris the master diagnostician, 🤓👍 class video gents 👍
Is 140k high millage this day and age ??? Especially on a Volvo derv,,,
Keep up the good work guys 👍
That’s an interesting one. Would have loved to see this turned around and repaired but totally understand your decisions as it would definitely cost more than the vehicle Iis possible worth. Brilliant work and thanks for sharing this with us take care
My d5 S60 ate the water pump and munched the engine.
I was always told these things were bullet proof. When I took off the belt cover and found it loose I was gutted.
The belt had been changed. Maybe someone put a crap quality pump on it or something. But still.
Loved that Volvo. Apart from the ludicrous turning circle!
You both are amazing , your work is first class, you both should be very proud of what you do 💯 respect
Chris saying the half tank of diesel is dearer than the car ha ha ha great video guys
Hope Chris bought the 🎂 🥮 on Friday.
sounds like an easy fix but new guides & valves/seats can be expensive fitting. So glad you’ve sorted out the ending! 😂
Lovely cars to drive they are so comfy and plenty power
Not happy rob I know it’s a really big time job and a bit of money on parts but it’s a great content and that’s what you guys are the best at on UA-cam p.s. happy birthday
Happy birthday Rob. Nice of you blokes to show a miss as well as all the hits! Can't win them all.
The nemesis of all U tube salvage rebuilders, the dreaded "Flat Battery" :-)
Just came across this channel randomly. Really enjoyed this, thanks fellas....one new subscriber
My 2016 2.0 diesel mondeo is touching 140k....if its anything like my last couple if mondeos its just ran in!
Good, long, informative video...hopefully you will get your money back...
Happy birthday Rob. Will you be doing a video of it going through the auction. I do miss your auction videos!
You will NEVER snap a glow plug :)
Ive done HUNDREDS of em.. never snapped 1... with this method...
Volvo was bought by the Chinese in 2010. Unfortunately it's no longer a Swedish company but a Chinese company of Swedish origin.
Take rocker cover off I have done loads of them it usually smash’s head they don’t bend valves
Mates volvo s80 D5 engine same thing. Auxiliary belt pulley collapsed. Belt round the crank timing belt off. All the best with that 1.
Deffinately a common problem I had exactly the same issue on my volvo d5 when I was in Scotland on holiday I scraped mine
Such a nice car .loved working on Volvo's when I was a mechanic.make a great car if it was repaired
Spot on good call .. looking forward to the next reveal on this car.
Your supposed to ring the bell 🔔 at the end of video 🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍👍🇬🇧👍🇬🇧👍🇬🇧👍🇬🇧👍
Really enjoyed this one guys very interesting !
I was just getting into that, then the video ended
Would love to see you 2 sort that though
140k is nothing for a Volvo
Just an observation, the headlights could do with a bit of restoration.(Bit hazy.)Headlight restoration kit would fix those.Happy birthday Rob!!🎉🎉🥂🥂🥂🍾🍾🎂🎂🎂🎂👍👍🦘🦘🦘🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
