    I bought a Star BM just for the hell of it for $200. My friend fell in love with the handgun, canceled buying a new AR and bought 3 Stars. Fantastic shooting handgun

    I absolutely love the little Star pistols, but there is something to be aware of with them. Their firing pins are prone to breakage from too much dry fire due to a sharp shoulder machined in the pins of some models making for a shear point. Try to use a snap cap when dry firing, because there are virtually no replacement parts left for these pistols at all. The last time one of my clients broke a pin, we had to have a machinist make a new one. Best to avoid that expense if possible. Cheers!

      Tom Crawford I was thinking about buying a star pistol just to have something reliable in the house. Now that you’ve said that I’m thinking twice about the buy🤦🏽‍♂️

    • @PPISAFETY
      @PPISAFETY 5 років тому +4

      @@petedavis1040 You will probably be fine with the Star if you treat it like a rimfire in terms of dry fire and only do it with a snap cap. It is a shame there are no parts left, because these are really cool little pistols. I don't know exactly how widespread the problem is except to say that I've replaced four for people over the last 20 years or so, and they were all "gun guys" who I know were dry firing a lot for practice.

    • @petedavis1040
      @petedavis1040 5 років тому

      Tom Crawford Understood, just the issue with sourcing replacement parts seems like something that would sway others the opposite way. Just looking for a cheap and reliable nine to keep around the home that my wife can use in case of anything.

      @@petedavis1040 I teach quite a few firearms classes for women, and two favorites stand out when they select the pistols they like from the training guns I have available. These would be the S&W Shield in 9mm and also the Walther PPS M2. Either of these is in the same size class as the Star, much lighter, similar capacity, and are not single action designs where a hammer has to be managed. Both have slim grip widths and can be had brand new for under $350 if you watch for sales. There are also plenty of used Shields on the market but not many Walthers.
      In this class of firearm, the slim 9mm, I own these two, the Kahr P9 and K9, the Glock 43, and the Springfield XDS for use in training. Results with all of them are very similar, but the ladies seem to enjoy the Smith and the Walther the most. The polymer Kahr and the Glock 43 are more popular with male students but the women report that they "kick too much" because if anything they are a bit too small and light for good comfort for a novice shooter. Many also like my ancient Glock 26, my personal carry gun, but that is a bit more expensive, even used, than the Star. If you are willing to drop down to a .380 (many are not), the number one favorite pistol of all my female students is my Glock 42. It is a very "soft shooter" and I bought mine new for $330. Good luck with your choice!

    I bought one of those STAR BM 9mm and it is very nice. I also bought two extra 8 round magazines with it. Very nice, very easy to take down and clean, and very good shooter! Compact and will fit in most 1911 Commander holsters. Great deal from Classic Firearms for $200 plus two extra magazines!!! But I don't like the Beretta 9MM because of the flip up instead of down thumb safety. I am used to flip down and flip up is confusing if you have two guns that are different!!!! D. C. Star BM is a reliable, accurate and inexpensive 9mm pistol, mine was $149. Though it kind of resembles a 1911, is not a 1911 no grip safety, trigger is hinged and swings up it does not plunge straight back like a 1911, etc. None the less, I enjoy mine.

    As of 6-14-19, I have a CZ 38, CZ 50, CZ 52, CZ 70, CZ82, 1979 Bulgarian Mak, 1960 East German Mak, 1969 Polish Radom P64, Yugo Zastava M57, and tomorrow picking up a Zastava M70. Could you say I'm into collecting milsurp? They are all facinating, it's the history behind them that so drives me to collect them! Have had my eye on a Beretta 92S from Classic Firearms, just have not "pulled the trigger" yet. I do have a Beretta Nano for concealed carry which, for me, has been flawless at the range, am thinking I should add a full size Beretta to my collection! Thanks for your thoughts here!

    J&G Sales currently has the Star BM 9mm " G " grade selling for $179.99.
    The salesman I spoke to on the phone last week sort of implied these were
    " G " grade and they were getting to the low end G grades.
    It could be he was trying to up sell me to the " G-VG " grade which was $219.99.

      I see J&G sales still has what they call " G " grade models for $179.99. However, the salesman told me on the phone these were
      getting to be the lower end of the G scale. It could be he was trying to up sell me to what he called G-V grade for $219.99.
      I don't mind some honest holster ware and some missing bluing as long as the gun is functional and shoots well.

    *Why you should never use surplus pistols that are curios & relics for self-defense or CCW:*
    1. The are usually worn out i.e. *metal fatigue* & could break at anytime.
    2. The gun's *springs are usually weak* and replacement springs are either not made anymore or very expensive.
    3. The problem with almost all curios & relics was that they *jammed* and were *unreliable* for many reasons.
    4. New, modern reliable and more effective weapons are available and the same price or cheaper.
    Note: For collecting no problem but I recommend investing in precious metals.

      As a young guy trained as a machinist these guns are a low barrier to entry investment that I can basically guarantee myself returns on. That being said, I do plan on investing in gold after I get myself more established.

    • @sweetcostarica
      @sweetcostarica 5 років тому +1

      @@TheUnchosenOne Yes, you can make a little money on guns as investments that is why many,
      many retirees get into buying and selling *firearms = low risk but also low returns.* It is also an interesting hobby though.
      With precious metals - if you buy enough at low prices and wait a while (10 to 20 years) you will receive
      almost guaranteed substantial profits.
      *So go for it & God Bless.*

      @ There are some very decent quality firearms coming out of Turkey today. I think that were you to include price point on the list of things that are important, they they would rank in the middle of the herd of guns sold to the average buyer. That of course is not to say that price should be the only criteria to buy a gun on, but if two guns are similar in every other respect, then that can be a tipping point.
      I am looking for a handgun right now, but I have to decide the type before I can narrow it down to the right gun. Thus the reason I am looking at this video, which is very well done.

    I have an early (4 digit) Tokarev that I bought NIB without looking. Unfortunately, I couldn't take it out and fire it for about 5 years so I never knew the absolutely horrible condition of the barrel. After putting several mags through it, I noticed that it had split the neck of every shell halfway down the side of the shell. Upon inspection, I found a barrel that looked like it had been poured cold, if you understand the reference. It looks like someone had dripped melted solder over a dowel. Where can I get a new barrel for it, as it's a certainty that the factory will blow me off as would the company that sold it to me. I can live without matching numbers (though I hate having to). I just can't trust this barrel not to blow up and I'd like to reload some shells with hollowpoints instead of Polish steel cores.

    9x18 is easily found for 9 to 10 bucks a box these days as long as you don't mind steel cased ammo for which there are no real negatives to shooting it in a 9x18 gun, they will eat it all and ask for more. Unless you're reloading, which I do occasionally for 9x18 but just like 7.62x25; they launch your brass a half mile! I get tired of hunting for it or trying to set up a tarp to catch it, so I usually just keep a good bit of steel cased around.
    There are some CZ82's around right now and that would probably be in my top 3 to suggest people to buy, they will definitely go up a good bit once they are gone.
    Great list, I have all of these except the 9x19 Yugo, but I do have two M57's.

    the 92S I got for a steal $180 after tax at local gun store. a lot of holster ware but beautiful patina, but debating about replacing the spring on the trigger. has a bad habit of doing double shot with the current reset. still competes to my cousin Taurus P92 in size and weight.

      the TT-33 kept holding the mag(s) and not ejecting it bough two more (NOS) the base fell off both ( due to the age and poor construction) bought two newer one powder coated paint and resolve the issue mostly
      the CZ 52 at the time that I bough TT-33 spare mags I pick up a few for the CZ both of the CZ Old and new mags work with no issues

      @@TheNazo21 well I have been buying Tokarev and CZ 52 for thirty years now and never had a problem with a Tokarev. Actually had one with no safety added . It was very old and all I did for it was clean it. Worked flawlessly for years until I traded for a 8mm Hakum .
      Sometime they do need adjustment to the lips on the magazine and maybe polish the feed ramp. That's about all I've ever really had to do to a Tokarev. The CZ 52 is another thing. I've completely rebuilt several of them. You can get stainless steel rollers and better spings nowadays. Barrel depends on what is wrong with it. They do tend to split . Never seen that on a Tokarev.

      The Tokarev is actually better than the CZ 52 because it needs little and very seldom brakes. The CZ 52 will wear out rollers and if you don't catch it you'll need a new barrel too. I have repair many of them over the years and tokarev is much better . It just like a Browning .

    The vz.50 and vz.70 are CZ pistols (in other words it is a CZ vz.70....."vz" basically translates to "model", so CZ model 70).

  • @sweetcostarica8714
    @sweetcostarica8714 5 років тому

    The Polish Radom P64 Pistol was not liked by the Polish Soldiers and it was replaced fast by the P-83. Unpleasant recoil due to small and uncomfortable grip,
    small magazine capacity, poor sights, short sight radius and heavy double-action trigger were reasons for the dislike.
    Maybe the P64 is a collector but there are a lot of them out there & on the market. Inexpensive pistol for a reason.
    *Warning:* DO NOT use any surplus weapon *for self-defense use.*
    Things to think about:
    - many have metal fatigue, weak/rusting springs and so their *hard to find, replacement* parts are needed. Do not shoot them much & use light loads.
    - the value of these surplus pistols in the video basically go way down after you buy it. The only except are rare pistols.
    - many of these old pistols are jam-o-matics. So if you are used to reliable firearms, you will have to learn to clear jams (especially the Star 1911 9mm clone).
    - the pistols here will not be drying up anytime soon. You will be an old, old man if they dry up and make $100 USD on them if that.
    *EDIT*
    Personal note: I have bought Makarovs since the late 90's. They are going up in price but I don't think they are close to being gone. One source dries up, another opens.
    Everywhere I have lived from Alaska to Florida there were Makarov for sale especially at gun shows.

      That may be true... Roughly 10 years ago, you could likely find Bulgarian Makarovs for $100-$200...
