    I like how much information you can compact under 20 mins. You speak clearly yet briskly, but I have no problem hearing. Some people talk way too slow, videos end up being 50 minutes.

      Expect the locking mechanism on the K31. It has only two locking lugs. If one gets hairline cracks this will get *very* dangerous for the one who fires the gun.
      Many modern weapons have 3 or more locking lugs which are also much stronger.

    Outstanding! No wasted verb-age , concise and plain spoken. Another feature of these rifles is that citizen solder's name is usually on tag under the butt plate. Remove the butt-plate and learn who carried the rifle. At age 65, the militia member was retired and the rifle became his possession. The fact that every male citizen was a militia solder, led to Switzerland has not been at war since the 1790s. The history and variations of he Schmidt Rubin bayonets is equally fascinating.

    Just ordered a K31 to go with my K11 and 1911. I’m anxiously awaiting that call from my FFL dude!
    The K11 & 1911 are both in excellent shape and a joy to shoot. The surplus GP11 ammo has disappeared but commercial ammo is usually available. Also there was no note under the butt plate of the 1911 but I did find one on the K11. These beautifully made rifles are very sturdily built. In die schweiz gehen!! Also that front sight alignment tool, the original one is quite expensive but I found a guy online that machines them for about $30 US.

    Thanks for the info. I had no idea that there were so many variants. I feel silly. I seriously thought it was just the K31. I wanted one and shopped around. I wound up buying a K11 without realizing it wasn't a k31. It was on the paperwork but I just didn't notice the difference. I just thought it was a carbine K31 variant. Honestly, I am still pretty happy with the K11. It definitely has all the features I was looking for in the general rifle and I like that it isn't too long. Also glad that it will take hotter ammunition. But I am still glad that I know more about these rifles. They are fantastic and excellent quality for surplus.

    • @kylemichaels3373

      A carbine K31 variant? Both the K11 and K31 are carbines. I've owned a K31 and two 1889's. The 1889's are my favorite as they are a true Schmidt-Rubin and the K31's really aren't being a total redesign. As a reloader the 1889 is also cheaper to shoot tha the K31, lighter loads so less powder, I only shoot cast bullets, and due to the light loads my brass lasts forever.

      I just like to purchase a 96/11 can shoot a modern swiss ammo without issue?

    • @alexblankenship118
      @alexblankenship118 23 дні тому +1

      @NTconstruction yes I shoot gp11 through my 96/11 with no issues. These 96/11's were basically updated to 1911 specs and would be indistinguishable if it were not for the wood grafting and magazine slot. Gp11 is the best shooting for all of the 7.5×55 swiss rifles but if you can't find any gp11 a good second is the ppu ammo. Mine seem to like it. The ammo made by Sellier&Bellot is ok but my rifles have tighter groups with the ppu. Gp11 is king though surpassing even my hand loads when it comes to group tightness and consistency.

    • @NTconstruction
      @NTconstruction 23 дні тому

      @alexblankenship118 Thank you for that information! It surprised me a factory ammo better than handload ammo. I didn't know even , can buy a die set for home loading. ( I'm new in hand loading, so, sorry for the dumb question).
      What's the parent case?
      And what is the technical info for it?

    • @alexblankenship118
      @alexblankenship118 23 дні тому +1

      @NTconstruction The cases I use are the ppu ones. Those are about the only new brass you can buy for it. You can buy bags of I believe 50 cases from ppu online. From there I load them with .308 bullets. You'll have to play around with how far you press them into the case though. The standard issue swiss gp11 round has a very long tail om the bullet that makes it hard to replicate when hand loading unless you cast your own bullets to get that same long tail and taper. In my experience Sierra match king .308 bullets do the best. Still not as tight as surplus swiss gp11 ammo but close.

    A K31 is not a Schmidt-Rubin. The K11 was the last model made by Schmidt-Rubin. Waffenfabrik Bern made the K31, not Schmidt-Rubin. This is why so many people buy the wrong rifle when looking for a K31. they don't realize the difference. Of course, I know that it is hard to change what most people think.

    Ok, wow, mine looks like none of the above. Well, it looks most like the FIRST one with NO pistol grip. However, it seems like it was once fitted with a scope due to the fact that I can see where the scope was mounted, and, the front site was removed. The rear site looks nowhere close to any of the ones in your video. Seems very small, low profile almost. It definitely has that big ass long bolt, and the red rubber is intact, not cracked. It does have a magazine, so it’s not the cadet one you mentioned either. It obviously had the stock revarnished and a rubber buttstock put on the end. I have to admit, I never paid attention to this firearm because it never excited me much, I personally like the AR type rifles, but now I’m intrigued to know more.

    Pop that clip off the mag release on the 1889 and you got yourself a magazine disconnect. It allows the mag to cam down. The clip was a later addition when disconnects fell out of military doctrine.
    Unconverted 1896 rifles and 1900 short rifles are next to impossible to find.
    Anyone buying one of these and thinking they can refinish the stock. DON'T. Just Don't. That's not the point of buying surplus arms.
    Lastly anything prior to the k31 should be downloaded. Though the 96's and up were stronger, they're not as strong as k31's and should be inspected more often.

      The Swiss 1911 long rifle, 96/11, and K11 are all designed around the (surprise) GP11 service cartridge that was designed in 1911. This is the same cartridge that the K31 fires, thus there is no need to download for these rifles. I would not go about rechambering them in magnum cartridges though.

      No, the 96/11 is a 1896 receiver. The 1911 is a the same 1896 receiver design. Which means they were designed around the GP90 which was less hot. Thus the lugs on the bolt, though stronger than the 1889, aren't as strong as the k31.
      The muzzle velocity of GP90 is 1968 ft/s
      The muzzle velocity of GP11 is 2560 ft/s

      @@Foche_T._Schitt Yes, and the 96/11, 1911 and K11 were all designed to fire the GP11 cartridge that you just listed. The issue with firing GP11 or similar commercial ammo in a 89/96 rifle is not the action, it is the barrel, which because it was cut for the larger bullet of the GP90 cartridge will suffer gas blowby in the throat, reducing accuracy. There is a reason that the 89/96 rifles are almost never found, as they were all re-barreled to accept the GP11 cartridge and became 96/11s.

      @@Foche_T._Schitt Absolute bullshit do your research! the 1911 was designed for the GP11 which was introduced in 1911! 1889's have very tight bores and even downloading them I wouldn't make a habit of shooting .308" jacketed bullets. Both of mine slug at .302-.303" I shoot soft cast lead bullets sized to .308".

    • @kylemichaels3373
      @kylemichaels3373 2 роки тому

      @@huntercompton9650 While this is true it is well known that the rear locking lugs of the 1889 and 96/11 make the action weaker than the middle lugs of the 1911 and front lugs of the K31. An 1889 or 96/11 subjected to too much GP11 ammo will experience locking lug set back and peening. If one had a super slow motion video of GP11 being fired in a 1889 or 96/11 you would be able to see the bolt flex. Also while the paper patched GP90 is larger in diameter ".323" vs the GP11 ".3075" the bores of 1889 rifles are much tighter and also use progressive rifling also known as gain twist, ie the twist rate gets faster the further the .bullet moves down the barrel. I have personally seen 1889's with sheared locking lugs from firing too much GP11, I personally would not fire GP11 or .308" jacketed bullets in an 1889 or 96/11.

    Do you know where I can purchase a six round box mag one of these 1911’s? I have one of these rifles chambered in 308 & need a box mag for it. The stock mag fits 308 just peachy. Love this video! Thanks a million for the upload!

      @William Warner
      Lots of surplus rifles were sporterized in the 50's and 60's. I only know of the six k31's in 308 made by Martin B Retting as being desirable and still maintaining military specifications. I think they were built from factory surplus parts, not pre-assembled rifles.

    I had a K11 but it didn't have all the wood on top or past the first clamp on the barrel shroud and it looks like it was made that way , is that a different model ? It did not have clamps around the barrel either.

    I just spent an afternoon oiling and greasing my collection of swiss rifles like that. How much is the prize for a k31 these days (he mentioned a price rise from 2016 - 2018) ? Cheers

    question about the forward shoulder strap loop: I see in your rifles, the top(89) and center (96/11) have the screw showing on the right side of the rifle? Is that piece reversible? Or is there a reason for the change in screw position?

    Is there much difference in speed or accuracy between the carbines and long rifles?

    My k31 has the issue tag behind the buttplate. I think it was issued in 1938. But I would love to be able to translate all of it. Since I can't read swiss. Any help out there?

    My dad left me one of these and I think it's an 1889 because it has that clip design. Could it have been put on newer models? Cause me dad told me it was a 7.5 by 55 forever. What markings should I be looking for? I can't ask him anymore as he passed away 2 months ago. What are these selling for as I'm gonna sell the one I have.

      All the ones I have seen for the 96/11 were braze on done by the Swiss Gun Shops. Yes the link is for a new style, yet at ranges in Switzerland the ones on older gentleman’s rifles stand from the 50-70’s, lots of those guns also in the shops or gun shows in Switzerland back in the 90’s that I was going to.

    I would love to buy a K31 or even a few!
    Also what kind of casings do you need for GP-11 reloading if you plan on resizing?

    • @Hunne2303
      @Hunne2303 3 роки тому

      Switzerland of course...where are you from? There are still plenty of them around, not too expensive and more or less good shape.
      No idea about the casings however...

      watch out for GP11 from 2016/17...these are off-spec and may cause FTF/FTE or other damage...

    If you have a K-31, remove the butt plate and look for the issue card.

    • @jamesharrison2374
      @jamesharrison2374 4 роки тому

      Those tags are under the butt plate of most Swiss arms, with the StgW57, and StgW90 there is a card holder on the outside that holds the info slip.

      I bought a K31 with a nice smooth walnut stock about a year ago for $500 from an older guy with 150 rounds of GP11 ammo. He was needing room in his safe and I really lucked out.
      The deals are out there, you just need to hunt them down.

      They're still out there. Some not as nice as others. I got a 1957 k31 that looks like it's unissued. Got it and a 1943 with canton stickers for $1050 last year.
      Got a K00/11 "P" series on the way as well. Less than 1300 "p" series 1900's were made.

      You can also tell how heavily shot out the barrels are by comparing the lands within the first 1 inch of the chamber to the muzzle.
      They'll still shoot good but the bullet can yaw a bit. Just reserve the ones with good rifling for long range shooting.

      There is a book on the Swiss Straight pulls wrote by Vetter, it has a list of dates matching to serial number, the books are rare, in German, and sell for around $600.00.
