Am I the only one who enjoys how AJ&Smart inserts a bit of humor on their vids? This deserves more views. I'm a great fan of this channel. Lots of love from Philippines!
As a Sketch user in the past and as a Figma user now, I was actually impressed by Figma's performance, so I decided to tested it with Instruments (Instruments is a powerful and flexible performance-analysis and testing tool that’s part of the Xcode tool set.) And Figma is more performant than Sketch, it uses way less memory which is very important for huge files and when you have many symbols and maybe even many files open at the same time. Figma has a desktop version and even if it is a web-based technology product it outperforms Sketch at the moment. And you can work offline with Figma you just need to have the file open previously, yes it's a pain in the ass, but it's possible, you just need to open the file previously at home or at the office and then you go to the pub or beach bar and work from there.
Nop, that's one of the things I like about Figma the overall performance, but just to be clear I have 16 GB of RAM and I use mainly the Desktop App, don't know if it helps, but probably, since web browsers tend to use a lot of RAM.
I am now learning about UX/UI, since I am in the midst of a career change. Anyway, while studying ux/ui, I am being constantly hearing about Figma and Webflow. Since both of these sites have free accounts, I am about to sign up and just play around with the site so that I can get used to it. I know that these two, not only that, I am in the midst of learning CSS and Javascript. This going to be fun for me to learn.
Sketch = Only for Mac? NEXT.. Zeplin = Can't seem to export import work to see css due to corporate firewall? Tech support poor? NEXT.. Adobe XD = I can't see the css? NEXT.. FIGMA = Web-based, FREE, CSS tab to view styles, effortless SVG and Raster image importation... Ding! Ding! Ding! We've found a winner.
Adobe XD now has Share for Development window when publishing design specs. You can see all the CSS as well as assets. And with the latest update, you can now collaborate on designs with multiple designers. I was an avid Sketch user, but Adobe has really pulled out all stops (or SLAPS) LOL :-P
I have tried Sketch once before at the same time Adobe was launching XD and a week later i've switched. At first XD was a little stressfull given the lack of features that were essential, but the adobe team was really dedicated and I keep on using. Now I feel that the XD is a really powerfull tool, even more because of the constant updates. Just like figma and sketch, the prototype tool isn't good for production (yet) but i believe that in the future whoever perfect this feature will win our hearts.
9:15 You glossed over the one feature here that made me fall in love with FIGMA. That little greyed out button just under 'CODE'. It generates the suggested CSS code that either I or a developer can just copy and paste into the final style sheet. So much QA time saved between the developer and designer or individuals performing both roles.
Old school designer here. I came from the Photoshop era, transitioned to Sketch, and now to Figma. Transition has been seamless, and I often forget that I'm in Figma rather than Sketch. Figma is a massive time saver as I'm able to combine several work flows together; wireframing, prototypes, high fidelity concepts and then having a showcase platform with the client. It stays simple in terms of plugins, don't knock Figma for not having plugins, it's often a bad thing if you need additional add-ons to do something simple and to manage all that on a daily basis. Figma has all the necessary tools to get started, and without the need to save or manage your files, have it on the go with any of your computers and have the collaborative features. It's amazing!
I used sketch for a good few years, coming from photoshop it felt so fast and relevant. Now on Figma and its like that experience again. Figma is so fast and the quality and speed of the updates tell me it’s getting better quicker. BTW you guys never mentioned crashing. Sketch has serious issues with bugs and always has done - figma never crashes ... ever. That alone is enough for me.
We happily switched to figma about a year ago and are currently testing it's new (beta) styles feature. The real-time collaboration has become an integral part of our workflow and even developers on a Linux device can just jump into any design :)
I'm currently using Sketch and Craft+InVision as my go to setup for practically every project, I think it's solid and developpers are getting used to it, not to talk about how handy plugins are. I see your point on performance and real time collaboration and I'm going to try Figma for sure but the thing I see in the market right now is that the majority of designers use Sketch and even companies have made the effort to switch their libraries to Sketch so a lot of times you get imposed on the deliverables format they want. How do you deal with that if that's something that has even happenned to you? And what tool are you using for prototyping then? ¡Thank you for sharing your experience!
I get that this video is ancient. But I really live Adobe XD. Don't hate. I feel like it does everything. I vaguely remembering when Quark (native Mac app) was excommunicated from the design field by InDesign. :P
Hey, what is the application that you show (at the 33rd second of the video) where there are the notes about the topics of the episodes? It looks to be a cool app :)
Switching from Sketch to Figma soon. Mostly for not having to need to share latest version of a file. However, more importantly: what is the tool you have open at the start?
For my remote job for an agency I use sketch. But i love the collaboration tools of figma. I am usinh it for university projects that involve multiple people working on UI
One feature i really like about Sketch is the symbols setup. When you create a symbol in sketch out of mulitple other symbols and text you can create one list element symbol for example and when using it in your design you can change the icon and edit the text without editing the master symbol. This makes it easy to create one component instead of multiple components. I have not found out how to do that in Figma, does anyone know if it is possible?
Found you through Flux (and your twitter video post of this Sunday Slap). Im really enjoying your content and this was a pretty funny review. Thanks for covering the strengths of each app.
Sketch has had shared libraries for a long time. Prior to Sketch including shared libraries you were able to use shared libraries using the craft library plugin.
I use Sketch on 75% of all my work! Figma looks lile the way of the future, but web-based technologies are still very hard to reconcile in unstable internet environments.
I'm not a visual designer, design "back-end" here. Needed a collaborative wireframing tool for a really big project and was looking at UXpin & Figma. Got into the figma freemium and shit, I kinda want to do UI design now.
Figma and Sketch are both widely used, and poweful tools within the Industry. We use Figma here at AJ&Smart, and it's also available on Windows (Unlike Sketch).
I saw this video last week 😊 Really enjoyed it so watched it again. Im a web designer, not product or UI or UX, but still a fan of your channel and company 🥂 Cheers from South Africa
Sure, I do. And in terms of the future of designing UI ... yes InVision Studio is exiting as a next step. But I believe designing UI should be in the native language/platform that is going to be used. For example if it's for the web we need a design friendly tool similar to the Webflow editor. This will eliminate the problems with handoff and prototyping even wireframing and will speed the process. And there will be no more design made in Sketch that can't quite translate to code :)
At Kenzie Academy the UX/UI Engineering accelerator I’m currently in has transitioned from Sketch to Figma mostly due to the platform dynamics. Which as a preferred Linux user I was so relieved 👩🏽💻
I like XD for performance and it's integration with other Adobe tools, looking for more prototyping features and of course an offline app from figma (it's the future).
fly asabird Thanks for the reply, asabird. Hmm, XD might be buggy but it's still better when compared to other Adobe tools. I really feel a light touch when using XD :)
Can you do a video on how to begin with designing, what resources to follow to start with and particularly which design tool to start with ( the more I watch and read, more I am getting confused).I am trying to switch my career from data world to front end web and designing. What about Adobe xd and Azure? Every design tool is good than others in some aspect, I am thinking to start with figma as it's free and will eventually try sketch once I learn the basics? Happy to hear your thoughts or suggestions.
Any software that doesn't have multiplattform support is going to struggle when the competitors all have it. Both XD, Studio, Figma, Axure are all available on both Windows and Mac. What I love about XD is it's tight integration with Adobes vast ecosystem. To be able to work seamless with both vector and bitmap graphics and edit stuff on the fly in PS and Illu is a great advantage when working in XD. I use the CC library in XD, PS, Illu and ID. Now that they have sorted out live collaboration as well XD is strong.
I am also a XD gurl for lika a month now because it's free and the closest to Sketch. I love the simple UI, and Prototype sharing. But I agree, it seems like it's not ready yet, but it's very good alternative for Sketch, and it should leave the Photoshop for web design in the past
Very much agreed, Jalena. There are some great updates to XD (and I still use it a lot) but it can't yet compete with sketch and Figma. Glad that you've switched from Photoshop also haha!
Depends if you really need the portability, we know Adobe do mobile friendly versions of their apps but we can't testify to how they function or how easy they are to use sadly.
Figma has better performance, Firma allows to turn on/off outlines, Figma has buggy iOS client. Figma has autolayout that works perfectly for typography layout. Sketch has slow performance, but good iOS client, that works. Sketch has a better nesting components system. Sketch doesn't have an outline mode.
Lol! Loved this episode...I am just getting into Figma and am starting to realize that all this sketch/InVision “love” needs a real time look at what else is out there....thank you. Is Webflow on the list to review?
I feel sad Adobe XD isn't ever in the convo. It seems the most user friendly and intuitive of the bunch and would like to know other people's opinions on it. I really don't know why people don't like XD.
I am loving XD so far. I can share and demo prototypes right to stakeholder and make updates that reflects I. The prototype as they are viewing it. They literally took the best from both figma and sketch
Really loved watching your video!!! It's funny, entertaining and kept my interest...some video reviews are so stale. So please keep it up! Figma was a potential candidate for our company to switch to, we picked it up super quick and love the UI. But then we discovered it doesn't handle component multi-states at all. Does anyone else have an issue with this? Kind of important when creating a design system and product.
Nice Video! Thank you. We use Webflow as the prototyping tool for web projects. Actually, it delivers almost production ready code. But my workflow it is still very Adobe dependent. Anyways Sketch is great and Figma looks very good also.
I get that as a standalone app Figma will have more features than Sketch. But that's the deal. At least for me, sketch is not meant to be used as standalone but rather take advantage of the plug-ins you can add. For example, using sketch + craft enables real-time collaboration and comments through invision as well as library system for components and other automatization possibilities. And Invision's Inspect solves all of our asset handover requirements. If you add Anima to sketch you can now export HTML as well as create animations in sketch and export code. You can sync up sketch with tools like Principle to quickly show how some transitions and animations should work. If you add all you can do with sketch + plugins vs figma, sketch wins over by far.
Wait, this review is made this month. so Sketch already has comments and preview/cloud. Yeah it is not same time collaboration, but you can give that to client. Still "meh" but yeah it is not like sketch doesn't have it. Another thing is, that sketch can be opened with windows by for example icons8.com/lunacy (had a situation that my client had developer who wanted from me psd... had no idea what sketch is).
About Sketch being a Mac App: I used Sketch for a long time, and I've been using Figma for some months now, and even if it's web based, it's much more fluid and faster than Sketch, even in big projects. Slap for Figma!
AJ&Smart I'm trying to make our small team start using Figma because of its collaboration power... As we are a team divided between USA and Argentina... And your video helped me a little bit more to convince them :P Slap for you! 🤚🏼
Sketch still performs better than Figma, in my experience. Figma opens up large files for an eternity and it keeps lagging, while Sketch works flawlessly. One more thing that puts me off Figma is how hard it is for icons to be exported from it and handed off to developers. I usually have to redo them in Sketch, at least most of them (some magically work), but it's twice the work. And it shouldn't be.
Interesting take, Sketch seems to be popular as it's more desktop than browser based and so less reliant on net connections too. Thanks for taking the time to comment, great points!
Our team has used it, but it's missing a couple of important cross collab features that we need in our work. We found it super intuitive though and easy to use, so in some respects, we miss working with it!
Thanks for your "slap review"! Very useful and entertaining. I teach Digital Design in Portugal, BA and Master levels and I definitely go for FIGMA in comparison with Sketch cause, MOST STUDENTS CAN'T AFFORD a MAC... so it's easy for me to pick a choice ;)
Figma won’t work on my MacBook Pro 2009. So I need to buy a new one! However my older version of sketch is fine. So you need the latest system for figma.
No mention of XD? XD crushes Sketch IMO and they are rapidly gaining market share everyday + it's adobe so you can just already imagine the synergy that it already has and will have with the entire adobe suite.
@@AJSmart You should check the new XD plugin as well. Mind-blowing. Give it some time XD will KO Figma and Sketch. They are catching up. The biggest downfall for Sketch is that it's not cross-platform.
I was thinking about give it a shot with Figma, but boy....the google plugin is SO fucking amazing and useful...not changing any time soon, will see in a future, plus I love zeplin and the way it works with Sketch.

Nice Video! Thank you. We use Webflow as the prototyping tool for web projects. Actually, it delivers almost production ready code. But my workflow it is still very Adobe dependent. Anyways Sketch is great and Figma looks very good also.
How do you find Webflow for things like prototyping though? Is the code always solid for the handovers?
designing in notepad straight to css is fun :) still do it to this day as well its just faster and not doubling up.
It's a cool feature! Thanks for watching James!
Interesting take Miguel, thanks for taking the time to share! Great points!
33 seconds in - what is that note taking app?
You forgot to mention that pricing. Figma is 100% free for individuals and amateur teams which makes more chance to win creators :)
Wait, this review is made this month. so Sketch already has comments and preview/cloud. Yeah it is not same time collaboration, but you can give that to client. Still "meh" but yeah it is not like sketch doesn't have it. Another thing is, that sketch can be opened with windows by for example icons8.com/lunacy (had a situation that my client had developer who wanted from me psd... had no idea what sketch is).
plus prototype is in sketch too... common guys GET A license and upgrade ;)
Oh I just saw that Figma can open sketch :D so windows users can go fo Figma and open sketch files :D
About Sketch being a Mac App: I used Sketch for a long time, and I've been using Figma for some months now, and even if it's web based, it's much more fluid and faster than Sketch, even in big projects. Slap for Figma!
We're with you on that one!!
Using Sketch but now seems like I am convinced to start using Figma.
We'd recommend it! We use Figma at AJ&Smart towers all the time!
sketch is better option for me right now, i live in nigeria and internet speed is really not dependable, so hence i work offline some times
That's an interesting point Benjamin, functionality and reliability are important in these decisions!
One million slap for this video ! I love this channel AJ&Smart ♥
One Million and ONE! Thanks Yasser!
Never used Figma before, but that sounds awesome. Thanks for the video!
You need to check it outtttt
AJ&Smart: I definitely will! Sounds really cool.
I use Sketch & InVision for prototyping and feel happy with it)
Great, they're both good tools as well!
Adobe Xd?
2 slaps for your camera work and music, very funny :)
Thanks Damian!!
How outdated is PSD for app designing?
You've made my day, guys! ♡♡♡ Looking forward to the next Sunday Slap.
That intro where she eats the mic and he's just like "bitch please..."
Feudor isn't so loudy
He isn't loud enough? Yeah, he's a soft talker :)
What is the prototyping tool you use with Figma? :O
We use Marvel App but looking forward to try built-in prototyping feature in Figma that got a really cool update recently
The slaps and explenations were a bit to confuses for me. But i use sketch at the moment.
Sorry to hear that Aurore, we'll take another look at this topic in the near future!
what do you guys think about adobe XD? does anyone use it for UI design?
Our team has used it, but it's missing a couple of important cross collab features that we need in our work. We found it super intuitive though and easy to use, so in some respects, we miss working with it!
I always get confused
John Rodrigues don’t worry, we’re always confused. About sketch, figma and life.
lol yeah!
Thanks for your "slap review"! Very useful and entertaining. I teach Digital Design in Portugal, BA and Master levels and I definitely go for FIGMA in comparison with Sketch cause, MOST STUDENTS CAN'T AFFORD a MAC... so it's easy for me to pick a choice ;)
haha! good point!! Thanks for sharing :)
Figma won’t work on my MacBook Pro 2009. So I need to buy a new one! However my older version of sketch is fine. So you need the latest system for figma.
Figma also works across OS's whereas Sketch is only Mac based.
I love this video so much! Hilarious and really informative. Thank you.
Thanks Jeremy!
Oh shit! It's Sunday already! Pimp slap! No money for tech daddy yet! 😂
I Use Axure RP 8.
Nice!
i love invision but still its not ready :(
what about Adobe XD ? :)
We're on it!
ya ! cool :)
You forgot XD!
XD is good too, do you have a preference between Sketch, XD and Figma though?
XD!❤️
You were not listening. 12:26 They actually dis XD :-(
you can use a sketch plugin to send all the html and css to developers, but im gonna give figma a chance just because the collaborative stuff
No mention of XD? XD crushes Sketch IMO and they are rapidly gaining market share everyday + it's adobe so you can just already imagine the synergy that it already has and will have with the entire adobe suite.
What about those sweet sweet Sketch plugins though?! (Out-with the creative suite of course)
@@AJSmart You should check the new XD plugin as well. Mind-blowing. Give it some time XD will KO Figma and Sketch. They are catching up. The biggest downfall for Sketch is that it's not cross-platform.
They did mention XD by dissing it 12:26
@@evanmanni2723 Is this with the latest update? Keen to see how what's changed!
For anyone that says that illustrator didn't have a global edit feature they clearly never learned to use symbols..
I didn't tried using figma yet but I will asap especially when I heard it's free!
I was thinking about give it a shot with Figma, but boy....the google plugin is SO fucking amazing and useful...not changing any time soon, will see in a future, plus I love zeplin and the way it works with Sketch.
Awesome format, I like how u make this facezooms LOOOL
THANKS you get it!
Yooo I came from The Futur, subbed!
i think you can open sketch files on figma
You can certainly upload Adobe Illustrator files, retaining layers too!
I am sketch fan now and ever...
KISHORE KANKIPATI SKETCH 4 LIFE
What about adobe xd 🤔🤔
