    It feels like there are a million design tools we're supposed to be paying attention to, but completely switching to a new tool can mean a new workflow, new things to learn, new processes... it's a lot of effort! Recently I switched from Sketch to using Figma and I wanted to tell you why I made the switch and what I'm loving about Figma!

    from a UI/UX designer perspective, the tools I use are depending on the clients, some of them want a .psd, others .xd or .sketch. but usually, I use sketch (if I have to choose), I have all the shortcuts set on my gaming mouse and it super fast and straightforward. I start using xd too for the new prototyping tools (auto-animate etc). I never tried Figma and it's the occasion to do so, thx for the video

    I made the switch to Figma last year. It was honestly a game-changer because even my non-technical/non-designer sales colleagues could quickly edit images without my help (love the live collaboration feature). I actually like starting with traditional whiteboard brainstorming before going digital. There is a company Kaptivo that makes a whiteboard camera so you can actually use a dry-erase board to draw and then save and share it digitally. Full transparency, I actually joined the team there because I thought the product was so cool!

      @radekpiekny2837 5 років тому

      Perhaps I am missing something but that is completely different tool mostly for vector graphics..Also I really hate when affinity does not allow you to control position of path node handlers and exports all kinds of bullshiet to svg along with the code. I am not sure if other tools are better at that though

    • @HelderCervantes
      @HelderCervantes 5 років тому

      @@radekpiekny2837 in my experience the SVG export has been pretty neat. I've even used the markup directly on pages to control colours and whatnot. The only annoying problem I find is that sometimes converting a stroke to fill doesn't output an accurate shape.
      I've been using it mostly for webdesign, occasionally designing a logo, and find it way more agile and easy to use than Figma or Sketch.

    • @radekpiekny2837
      @radekpiekny2837 5 років тому

      @@HelderCervantes Stroke is one of those things that converts to path instead of just well...stroke. So the file gets messy and big. At least that was known bug last time I checked. It is of coarse possible that I am doing something wrong but I did try follow 2 tutorials and with the same results. Way too many nodes, handlres and others stuff that takes majorify of a file. But I have to say that other than these annoying things I like affinity a lot. And tablet version is awesome. But I like precision so until the handlers are fixed I cannot use the tool properly...:(

    • @radekpiekny2837
      @radekpiekny2837 5 років тому

      You mean the disability to vertical align text (No, I don't mean on the canvas, but in relation to their box-size)? The missing basic features like drop shadows, or even the ability to switch gradient colors quickly by dragging? There are SO many things that make working with XD such a pain in the a**. And this comes from a really forward seeing dude, who's seen it's development from the very early beta etc. Even when it wasn't out for public. There was such a lack of development, that I am just really dissapointed at this point.

    XD is still king in my book, works directly with all your classic adobe programs and is in a monthly update schedule with features surpassing all competitors. I used to think it was limited until the last 3 months of updates. I would give it a try just to see if you like it more because it has a smoother workflow over sketch and figma. The next update should integrate plugins which will completely take over the industry. Just a heads up!

    • @charlimarieTV
      @charlimarieTV  5 років тому +9

      In what way is it smoother? The reason I like Figma is because the workflow is very similar to Sketch, just lots of little things that make it better! If XD is quite a different workflow I don't think I'm interested in switching to it. I'd need to wait until I was at a point in my career where i could make the time to learn a completely new program, like I did with Sketch. Work is too busy these days for stuff like that!

    • @robkubala28
      @robkubala28 5 років тому +8

      CharliMarieTV if you know illustrator and photoshop you will know XD. It’s the same hotkeys with more UI/UX design based features like symbols and responsive design capabilities. The time for you to learn XD would be extremely minimal in comparison to other programs if you consider XD’s familiar UI and it’s design process in relation to the other adobe programs you already know and love!

    • @robkubala28
      @robkubala28 5 років тому +8

      CharliMarieTV another helpful tool that completely overtakes most programs is XD’s repeat grid tool, as a UI designer I use this daily! wow I find it SO much faster than Sketch personally!

    •  5 років тому +4

      Funny, my experience is different. When I first tried it, it was way faster and way more intuitive than any tools I've tried before. It still is. The frame issue isn't an issue unless I manually changed the constraints settings, which is intended behavior. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Never felt like Figma is slow. It has exceptional speed on my laptop. Especially compared to Sketch. The frame / group usage is very powerful once you get it. It's a bit odd at the start but very powerful when you get used to it.

      It depends on your net speed which is a requirement for Figma.

    We switched from Sketch to Figma a few years ago as well. Been a great way to help us scale our efforts. We even use it for marketing designs, marketing templates, and campaign planning like storyboarding for videos.
    So many great new plugins now too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it!

    Brava! A fellow designer and appreciator of Figma! It was great to watch you talk about the same reasons why I've made the switch to Figma, and I also learned a few features from you. Thanks! (I still have to use Sketch because other designers are dependent on it, and I really don't like XD!)

    I’m so glad you‘re finding Figma so great! I recommend putting in some effort in becoming comfortable with components. Component instance swapping spreading consistency across easy across larger larger projects. Not to mention how well building designs with components line up with developers building the webpages with components :)
    Plus the team styles and component library is an absolute godsend!

      Did the same thing too. I absolutely love Figma now. I could never switch back. I still use photoshop for my artworks though, but I find it's a way better tool for making visual content than for designing UIs. Which are much more precise and senstive.

    Thanks this was really helpful! I didn't even know about Figma. Will definitely try it out, esp since the price for sketch is a bit too high if you don't use it for work, but only need a tool occasionally for some free time projects.
    I think that's where a pricing model like the Figma one is more flexible and smarter these days, bc it appeals to everyone from occasional to professional user.

    @CharliMarieTV You have mentioned you like presenting and commenting designs more in the invision. You can do this same way also in figma, just enter the presentation mode (play icon in top right corner). You can share it as presentation (prototype) and still have the ability to leave comments.

    A friend and I recently decided to give Figma a go after having used Sketch for several years now. My only gripe, besides the Frame one that you mentioned, is the bounding box on text. It doesn’t sit flush with the bottom or top of the text, so one has to manually resize the bounding box to have it fit, otherwise text sits wrong on eg a button when aligned using the align tools. I have also found that often my frame doesn’t display the entire frame in the prototype preview mode.

    Thanks for sharing your insights! I’m also considering switch to Figma! I mostly like how Figma handles components in comparison to Symbols in Sketch! Nevertheless I’m a big fan of all the available Sketch plugins which make Sketch so much more useful. I’m also curious to see how inVision Studio evolves over time.
