@@redcardinalist i always tought that Jon sitting on the throne, would be a "i don't want it, but there is no one better to do it" situation. King Bran is just super awlful for me. After he became the three eyed raven, i could only see him as the ultimate Varys and nothing else. Making the "mystical sage character" archetype into a king don't feel right.
I think George will probably fail to appease the fandom either way and he know that. I feel like he can't create a ending that is both fulfilling and surprising. In the end, almost everyone likes a happy ending. Not all objectives need to fail.

The idea is to pick someone who has a story about perseverance. This line isn’t Tyrion talking to the viewers. The writers know Bran was boring as shit, but he was still the right pick. Because Westeros needed a boring king. Someone who will fix the sewers of KL, not someone who’s doing cool moves with his sword.
Westeros needed to change. They needed to stop giving power to someone just because he was borned in the right family. They needed to stop vindicating war heroes who took power by force.
Westeros needed someone to rebuild the country and avoid it plunging back into wars. That’s where Bran becomes important. He knows the history, so he knows the past mistakes and what leaded to wars. He also can’t have kid, so the next king will have to be chosen for his qualifications. He also doesn’t have any personal ambition. So, he’ll always remain objective. And, he has a story of perseverance. He wanted to be a knight, which is what every man wanted, but he became a cripple, which most men would’ve prefer to be dead instead. But he survived. He found a new purpose and found a way to help people.
The Kingdoms were broken, so they picked a Broken King to rebuild it. Yes, it’s anticlimactic, but it was meant to be. Because, as I said, Westeros didn’t need another King Robert who took the crown by crushing an evil dragon in an epic battle. They needed a fucking nerd who’s going to rule with knowledge and wisdom.

That’s called a negative character arc.
Character arcs can be positive or negative. And in most stories, especially ones on feudalism, where the characters have direct influence over worldly events, the character arc can influence the story world arc.
In the case of GOT, both Jon snow and Dany had negative character arcs. Both of their arcs lead to a negative story arc, The burning of king’s landing.
Jon relinquished the throne, doing the honorable thing, though the honorable thing got his father and himself killed (by the night’s watch). Dany took the throne though it didn’t belong to her, doing the unhonorable thing.
The recipe for the arc is the emotional wound, the lie the character believes, vital information about the lie, and how the character handles the lie.
Ew: Jon snow is a bastard
      Ew: dany’s family was murdered.
Lie: Jon snow is a bastard
      Lie: dany is the heir
Vital information: Jon is the king
Vital information: Jon is the king
Handle: gives throne to Dany though she is emotionally compromised
Handle: receives the throne though it does not belong to her.
      Arc: negative
      Arc: negative
Story world arc: negative(for most people) Dany chooses to lead by fear and burns the kingdom. Positive for Bran (he was playing the game as well).

I could have gotten behind them, truly. But the fact that they rushed through those final two seasons so much - so needlessly, stupidly, stupidly much….ultimately, none of it felt earned because they rushed the freaking show far too much.

I feel the same way. A whole season dedicated to the knight king war and bran's thing explained more. a whole season dedicated to the war with cersei. major talked about the mad king getting captured and tortured and driven mad. we could've had a whole plot line of dany and messande getting horrifically tortured by Cersei. Her turn to being mad wouldve been expected and cheered by some. A plot line of the whole seven kingdoms rallying behind john and the starks to defeat her. she still wouldve had to die by johns sword in the end. He still wouldve had to go north cuz they would never follow a targaryan again. couldve had greyworm going to the island him and messande talked about. So much couldve been fleshed out if they just took their time.

When Jon screams "children, little children burned!" and I hear the parallel of Maester Aemon's voice from Season 1 saying "the children, even the little children!". Or when Tyrion says "what about your sisters" and I hear Varys asking Ned "what of your daughter's life my lord"...it's those little symbolisms that makes me tear up. When Dany almost touches the throne. So close and yet so far! The BGM during that whole sequence is unnerving. The dull gray fatalistic imagery of the capital are as breathtaking as they are gloomy. It's like the "world that could've been" buried under the debris, ash and snow of human folly. And that Stark theme at the end 🥺

To all the people saying they got the general plot from George R. R. Martin on how to finish the show... Read his most recent Winds of Winter blog and Esquire interview from 3 weeks ago. He talked about completely changing how the show did it. Even claiming characters who lived in the show might be dead and characters who died might actually live in the books. "And the ending? You will need to wait until I get there. Some things will be the same. A lot will not.”

A point to add beyond this is that the Night's Watch no longer exists anyway. They were pretty much all wiped out by the end, as far as it was shown Ed and the few who were left died at Winterfell. I don't get why people want Jon to be King of the Six/Seven Kingdoms, even though he would be a good King he would be absolutely miserable doing it. Is 1 they went through a lot
2 they the oldest house in westeros so it would them to win.
the show is called game of thrones not white walkers I guess that way they only lasted one ep if it didn't theu would all been killed but they could have a fight scene with jon but he might not have a chance is the night king has super strength he killed a dragon with his strength alone.

Bro, I totally enjoyed this journey with you!
A lot of people hated how it ended, but I was good with it. The series began with the Starks and ended with the remaining Starks getting pretty much what they wanted. As much as everybody wanted Jon to be king, he never wanted it. And Grey Worm would've never accepted him as king either. Sansa's loyalty to the North makes her the perfect northern queen. Arya never wanted to be tied down and became an explorer. Bran as king of Westeros is perfect because he has no personal agendas to stroke. And they all will always have a home to go back to in Winterfell.
I suspected Daenerys was gonna turn mad queen when she burnt Randall and Dickon Tarly to death. It was a slippery slope from then. Her finding out Jon's secret. Jon refusing her advances. Losing 2 of her dragons. Losing Jorah. Losing Missandei. It was too much for her.

Exactly. But what I find hilarious is that most of the people that are hating on the ending are huge George RR Martin fans, books over the show. What doesn't jive with that, is that George is the one that set everything in stone for the ending, from the very beginning, before the show was even shot. The pilot episode, all the stories repeated over & over again throughout the show & the visions all set in stone the endings for all the main characters who survived till the last 2 episodes. It's not about what the fans covet for an ending, it's about what each main character coveted, the demise or achievement in getting there in the end. The last 15 minutes of the show was perfection in my book, good guys, like in all great movies, end up on top.

@@Steve-eh4db Exactly. Martin wouldn't have signed off on Season 8 if it wasn't what he wanted. I remember some people not liking that Arya was the one who ended up killing the Night King. They wanted it to be Jon, i.e. the Azor Ahai theory (supposedly the slayer of the Night King is supposed to be male.) But it was already slated with Martin and the writers that Arya would be the one.

When she burned them, all the while calling Cersei a tyrant, I was speechless. Many people don't see this as crossing the line. When she burned the Tarly's, she had lost Dorne and Highgarden but Jorah, Rhaegal, Viserion and Missandei were all still alive. Dany may have been mildly irritated, I asked myself what would she do if she was really pissed?

Some fans predicted the ending based on the names of the direwolves. GRRM has said the ending is generally the same however there are more characters and plot lines in the books so of course there will be more. It will all make sense because he will expand on the why's behind the what's. He always said the ending would be bittersweet.
Jon - Ghost - Jon will end up like a "ghost" living a free and carefree life beyond the wall. He always said he never wanted power but people turned to him with their burdens.
Sansa - Lady - Sansa becoming a "lady" like she always wanted and ruling over a kingdom.
Rickon - Shaggy Dog - Rickon gets separated from family and has a lone existence.
Robb - Greywind - Dark existence and ending as if he is scattered to the wind.
Arya - Nymeria - Same as the Dornish warrior queen who sailed on many adventures and ended up sailing west never to be heard from again.
Bran - Summer The last book is titled Dream of Spring. What comes after a winter? Spring. Then a long summer indicating the long reign of Bran.
I think they nailed it. Cheers! Thanks for the memories!

Sansa : Invocation, praise, charm, Queen and a small musical instrument you play.

So, S6-8 are not from the books, as the books are not out yet, but it was still following what Georges told them for the ending. For example, Georges literally admitted that King Bran was from him.

In recent news, however, a couple of weeks ago George himself has admitted that while the case has always been things would be fleshed out differently in the books than in the show, even if major destinations remain the same, that he is not confined to absolutes and even as he continues to write his final books, they are straying more now than before, from the show's ending 👀

It's funny you mentioned Elizabeth because Sansa's coronation is quite literally inspired by that of Queen Elizabeth I. Elizabeth wore her hair down during her coronation as a sign of purity, in open defiance to those who claimed the sexual abuse she suffered as a child "ruined" her. It's one of the only moments from the final season I genuinely liked. Even if the writing was messy, I was happy about that part.

"The only way to keep your people loyal is to make certain they fear you more than they do the enemy."
"I will remember, Your Grace," said Sansa, though she had always heard that love was a surer route to the people's loyalty than fear. If I am ever a queen, I'll make them love me."
"Once, she had loved Prince Joffrey with all her heart, and admired and trusted his mother, the queen. They had repaid that love and trust with her father's head. Sansa would never make that mistake again."
Yes I do understand why Sansa would be the last one standing instead of Dany and Cersei. It's interesting to see what GRRM will do since he said he's gonna go in a different direction from his old ideas, but ASOIAF has so many of these pointers on what the key difference between the three is. In the show Sansa's the one we see see actually ruling, meeting with the lords, taking care of the things that matter in every day life, like food, supplies, weather, etc. Undead Mountains and monstrous beasts inspire fear, not reverence. When you are being ruled by an iron fist, the cycle of revolt and suppression of that revolt is inevitable. Your downfall is in your ruling philosophy. The third quote is also a good directional pointer on how an eventual Dany Sansa relationship can go in ASOIAF if you think of another impulsive ruler in the place of Joffrey. The fact that their clash in the show was never a forced one. It was a foregone conclusion forged by their experiences and temperaments and reflected a bigger clash of the two irreconcilable regions. I feel the biggest shortcoming of this season wasn't some night king jon snow battle royale, it was not exploring this conflict in a more in depth level.

    • @Steve-eh4db
      @Steve-eh4db Рік тому +3

I disagree with most that you say.
Her army, unsullied, was about a thousand strong in the end. Down to 12.5% from the 8,000 she had. You can literally count how many rows of unsullied were & how deep each line was. Press pause & count, 15 rows left of center & another 15 right of center, 30 deep = 900, another 100 on the steps. Far left & far right are not formations, just masses of other soldiers. Throw in about 150 Dothraki on horses in the background.
Her quick decline. In that limited time, she lost her right hand man, Jorah, her left hand woman, Missandei, 2 dragons that she considers her kids, Jon, Varys & Tyrion disobeying her wishes & conspired behind her back, all this in 8 episodes. In 68 episodes, she lost Drogo & Sir Barrister. Greyworm, only one left to trust. Not to mention her Targaryan background of inbreeding, with half of the Tatgaryans going mad & that she discovered that she is no longer the heir, after years of pursuing the Iron Throne.
Bran, was being groomed to lead in the pilot episode. He was the most in awe with the king coming to Winterfell. Mirrors Charles Xavier of the X-Men, the leader on a wheelchair, who has a ton of wisdom & knowledge, just like Bran has.
Jon's purpose was served. He wanted to go to the Wall. He wanted to be a ranger & not a servant, but learned from Sam that the Lord Commander hand picked him to be his servant because he see's something in him & is grooming him to be the next Lord Commander. The only title he coveted. Story lines are great, but it's about what the main characters covet, the demise in getting to what you covet or the reward in getting there. Jon never coveted to be king of Westoros, the fans wanted it for him.
Tyrion falling off. In sports there are dozens of coaches, rarely do coaches win 3 or 4 years in a row. So if they win 2 championships in a row & then never make it to the Championship for the next 5 years, it doesn't make them to be suddenly stupid. Where did it say that Tyrion had a monopoly on making all the right moves & that everyone else was stupid? In life, people make mistakes, despite being bright. Being bright doesn't mean you are always right. Sometimes when giving advice, it's the wrong advice.
The beauty of the GOT show, is that they didn't do things by the book. Not to be so predictable. If every fan knew exactly what would & should happen, it sort of defeats the purpose of watching the show. The bigger problem, too many people thinking they are the screenplay writers for the show & forgetting that they are not. The most important part, forgetting to be entertained, because you predicted a different ending.
Best show ever in my book. I refuse to look at the glass 5% empty, but 95% full. 2nd highest rated TV show on IMBD, voted on by millions of voters.

I didn’t quite expect her to burn the WHOLE ASS CITY down, but I knew she would do something unredeemable, something that disqualified her as an ethical choice. Because whether people want to remember it or not, Dany has always chosen violence. She has always been standing on a hair trigger with only a small council of people to talk her down. Once she lost that council, once the only thing she had left was rage and vengeance and her last dragon, yeah. It was always gonna be fire and blood with her.
Bran is a boring choice, but like you said, he was a very logical choice. A true “neutral” in a world where the ambitious become the villains. I never had a visceral reaction against the anticlimactic mellowness of the finale. I thought it fit right in with the ambience. We've been conditioned by TV shows to expect certain things and anything not sticking to that format is automatically chalked up to the bin. But GoT always had a way of screwing with expectations, it was a bit too late to be dismayed. But how can you stand Bran on the throne? Hell no I didn't want Bran to be king lol, but I knew none of the main players were gonna end up on the throne either, and I was fine with that. I always thought it was gonna be Gendry or someone like that. As a House Lannister diehard I'm glad The Lions went out unbowed. I had no interest in seeing Cersei become dragonfood and Jaime dying while protecting her IS the most selfless thing he could do as a quote unquote good guy. I can't think of a happy ending for a tragic character like Jaime. I dig the post-apocalyptic ruinous dark new world look they went for. The eerie aesthetics of the ash'd out desolate looking throne room, with the Queen of the Ashes all alone and that haunting score playing, it always bring back a rush of emotions and memories for me. The montage in the end is very wistful too. The show was about the Starks. The Starks won. Both the Targaryens didn't. I don't have an issue with that. Damn, Major! This is not a power fantasy! This is a moral parable. Do the people who do good in the world always end up on top? Is the point of doing good and self sacrificing for the people you care about to get some reward at the end?
Jon did his duty. He saved the world and sacrificed everything to do it: had to kill his love, had to lose his honor, had to go back to the Watch.
He doesn't even get the self-satisfaction of a job well done as a part of him will always gnaw at him. Was he too rash? Could have Dany been persuaded to become more peaceful? Will the realm be better or worse now that Dany's project has failed?

I thought that every time Dany got burnt she came back less of herself. Closer to madness.
It was a form of magic and cheating in a way. That always exacts a cost.
I also think wanting the throne because you think it's owed to you - even though if the Targaryens had remained on the throne she would not have been in line indicated from the get go that she was no more "entitled" to it than Cersei. Along the way, she gained favor because she decides to free slaves. Of course that is a good thing. However, her sense of vengeance from the get go told me she was not a balanced person. She just had the literal fire power to live out her revenge fantasy. She turned around and used those freed slaves for her purpose in her new cult of personality. Compare how much she ever talked about her duty to her people, all her people to Sansa. Her disregard for how they would eat or make livings. Not saying she didn't care at all. Just that she is about conquering more than governing or ruling.
She was as problematic to me as Stannis using blood magic. It made her morally wrong to sit on the throne in the end.

I loved the ending. How many times did Jon say “I don’t want it”. ? Sending him to the Knights Watch was actually a gift! He’s free and can live in peace. Sansa wanted the North so bad, never wavered! The North was steeped in tradition, they deserved to be ruled by their Northern born Queen. And Finally after all the madness and constant warring, Bran really was the best choice. He has no motives, no vendettas, no ego. His characters journey was this culmination. As far as Dani? Wasn’t it fun watching her get creepier and crazier?! Anyone surprised by that wasn’t paying attention.

A lot of people misinterpret Tyrion relationship with Cersei. Yes she hates him, but she's been trained to by tywin and time and time again Cersei has had the chance to kill Tyrion and has not done so. the scenes they share early on highlight that though they are separated by hate for one another they do love each other.

Thank you, Major, for the ride. You are really a great, great reactor.
We all had similar first reactions to Bran landing on the Iron Throne & that it belonged to Jon, the rightful heir. Until we took some time after it was all over to reflect on things. George's genius was not giving us the fairy tale ending, that we all concluded (Some still with the sour grapes, not letting go) would be. It was about what each main character coveted (Not what the fans of the show coveted) from the very start. Sort of like putting a jigsaw puzzle together. You start with the edges & everything falls into place easier. Sansa wanted to be a queen or princess. Arya wanted to be a warrior (Eyeballing The Hounds Armor). Jon wanted to go the Wall, there he didn't want to be a servant, but he lit up when Sam told him that the Lord Commander was grooming him to be his successor. That leaves us with Bran, the boy who climbed the walls of Winterfell to get a glimpse of the King coming. He was the one that was most enthused about it. He, so happens to be taking lessons on how to lead by Ned Stark himself. It is not a coincidence, that a boy bound to a wheelchair, who has great knowledge, ends up to be the leader. He was meant to mirror Charles Xavier of the X-Men, a man of great wisdom who is bound to a wheelchair too, who is the X-Mens' leader.
It was George RR Martin's ending for all the main characters, he had Bran pegged for the Iron Throne. This was written in stone BEFORE they even began shooting the show. The pilot episode foreshadowed where all the main characters that were left, would end up at. People got carried away with the blonde with her dragons & lost focus. She was not the main focus of the show. The focus of the show centered around a morally good family brought up the right way. They all went their separate ways after the pilot episode. But they still remained the main focus of the show, collectively, getting the most air time. Through trials & tribulations they endured, like all the great movies we have watched before, the good guys end up on top. Which is why the show's main focus started & ended up with them. There is no coincidence, that the stories & the visions in the early episodes of the show, are exactly to where the ladder 2 episodes came to be. Do you remember the visions & the stories, repeated over & over again throughout the entire show? George, after taking 12 years writing the next book, a book never released, just decided to scrub his entire ending for his books & might need another few more years to write a new ending. Why? To appease a minority who protest very loudly, wanting that fairy tale ending. Some people are spoiled & never satisfied, wanting to look at the glass being 5% empty, rather than being 95% full. GOT 2nd highest rated TV show on IMDB, decided by millions of voters, but the favorite in my book.

Sansa was right to tell Tyrion about Jon. Because regardless of what Dany fans think, she would’ve killed him. Sansa didn’t make Dany go mad, she was already pretty violent but always had adviosors to help her find another way. With them dead, she gave into her instincts and slaughtered a city. That had nothing to do with Sansa, so she really doesn’t deserve the hate. Jon should’ve been king but he never wanted it, so it’s fair that it went to Bran. Sansa became Queen because she ruled the north gracefully while Jon was gone for all those months. And even when he returned and was only focused on Daenerys, she was focused on the North. She deserves it. And I don’t see Jon’s ending as sad, he’s with his friends and he’s free beyond the wall. He was always his happiest there, without labels and no burden to carry, just himself. I think everyone had a good ending except Sansa. She may be queen but she’s completely alone. Her family is dead or separated and all her advisors/trusted friends have gone to Kings Landing for Bran. She never really wanted to be queen, she just wanted her family together and safe. I loved how we see the montage of the starks and their future. Sansa & Jon were my favorite characters❤️

I think Jon’s ending is perfect. It’s as bittersweet as it can be. Yes, he’s getting punished even though he did the right thing, but that’s the realism of this story. And, this is Jon. If Bran says that his punishment is death, he would’ve put his head on the executioner’s block himself lol. That’s Jon.
But also, he ends up where he belongs. That’s the beauty of it. He doesn’t belong South. He doesn’t belong in King’s Landing trying to deal with politics and shit. He would’ve hated it. He belongs North, with Ghost and Tormund. That’s where he’ll be happy.

Just want to chime in about Bran being king: Bran died in that cave, and he became The Three Eyed Raven. The Three Eyed Raven (what I think) is a consciousness that reincarnates into a vessel it chooses. It chose Bran. Here we get into book territory, but to keep it simple (because a lot is still unanswered in the books) Bran died, and The Three Eyed Raven, more accurately The Weirwood Network, became Bran. Before The First Men came to Westeros, it was a Network of Greenseerers and wargs, a hive mind, a whole network that was deeply connected to the Weirwood trees. The Weirwood trees are their Network. The First Men destroyed a lot of that and they were at war with The Children. Bran IS the Weirwood Network. GRRM confirmed that Bran will be king at the end of his saga, and it makes perfect sense. The Weirwood network survived and reclaimed its origin and home.I don't think Bran will sit on the Iron Throne, and I don't think there will be an Iron Throne. I think Bran will dwell in The God's Eye.

I had many theories and guesses as to how this would all end. And a lot of it was right. When Dany burned the city; I knew it was game over for her and knew she was dead. All I kept thinking was; ‘she is going to die’ and begging one of the characters to just do it already. So her death came as no surprise to me. But that didn’t mean I wasn’t upset with, what I felt to be, her terrible mad queen character development. I was counting on her becoming the mad queen, but the lead up to it was too rushed for me.
But imagine how Emilia Clarke, who thought her character would succeed, felt when she read her script. She had to take a long walk for hours to calm down. I understood her reaction.
The only thing I disagree with, is her annoyance towards Jon Snow “getting away with murder” ending.
I think; “Fool, he got away with killing a mad tyrant; your character went bad. Accept it.”
All in all; I can’t wait for your reaction to House of Dragons if that’s what you’re intending to watch also.
I already have a few annoyances at some changes like my main female character’s age, etc; but I’m still stoked. :)

I read somewhere she didn’t know she went mad but just burned the red keep and wildfire went off accidentally killing the people of kings landing. @@ACinemafanatic Well, if you read the books, the Wildfire being set off accidentally by the dragons is what is being foreshadowed. It'll likely be during a fight between Dany and a fake-Targaryen, who got cut out of the show, name Aegon, at the end of Book 6 is my guess. (If GRRM still sticks to his 7 Book series idea.) And yeah, Emilia Clarke had *zero* idea Dany "goes mad" and just kills people when she was filming. It wasn't in the script. She didn't find that out until she actually *watched* the final episode with a group of fans that that is how they did it. The original script, which you can find in the Writer's Guild Library, says the Dragonfire sets off the wildfire and THAT is what burns the Red Keep and Kings Landing down. They changed it in post-production because Jon stabbed Dany over what amounts to an accident is all types of sh***y. (Jon'll probably stab her in the books for a WHOLE DIFFERENT REASON related to the White Walkers/Long Night. The first long night ended after the hero stabbed the love of his life, named Nissa Nissa, through the heart to ignite a special sword he crafted).

When Tyrion says "sometimes duty is the death of love" flipping Master Aemon's line on its head, that was brilliant. Jon's situation was exactly like Ned's.When Varys said "What of your daughter's life my lord?", that was the parallel to when Tyrion reminded Jon of his sisters. Ned made the wrong choice & lost his head, Jon made the right one. All this wasn't done for shock value, they did have a clear vision. Jon killing Dany in the throneroom is disturbingly picturesque. Straight out of some renaissance romance story of love and perfidy. They paid off Dany's vision of the destroyed Throne Room from S2. They showed Bran's vision of dragon over King's Landing. King's Landing was gonna burn, no ifs & buts and it wasn't gonna be due to some Godzilla vs King Kong gOoD GUys vs eViL qUeEn fight. Dothraki loyalty ends with the death of the Khal. They're aimless savages after that. The Unsullied have no reason to fight the combined Kingdoms when they don't have a paymaster anymore. Jon can kill Dany "easily" as he is the only one who can get past the dragon. Jon sacrificing his crown is the story they've told all along, he is the anti-liberator, he is not blinded by his own righteousness & the worship of the masses. Who gets mad for a cringey Greyworm vs Jon Mortal Kombat 1-v-1 fight. For what? Just so honorable gOoD gUy Jon is force fed on the throne with sunshines and daisies hereafter? In a show whose motto is "if you think this has a happy ending you haven't been paying attention"?Bet.
Dany proclaiming herself the freer of men women and children while standing on heaps of bodies of men women and children as the ominous filming nail the fact that this regime will be a tyranny far greater than the tyrant it has replaced, is uncannily relevant to current times. The speech is exactly the same speech Drogo gave in S1. It's the same legendary speech Dany gave to the Khalesars in S6. She didn't change, your perspective has. You're seeing the consequence of those words when acted out. Maybe you shouldn't blindly put your faith in demagogues in the first place. The reality is Dany was always gonna go off the rails without Jorah or Barristan to counsel her. This wasn't Dragon Lady Bad Overnight, there's about 15 different episodes of her counsels begging & pleading her not to commit mass slaughter. If that wasn't hint enough all there was left to do was to knock the self-denial out of the viewer with a frying pan. People even manage to act surprised that the Dothraki pillage, Northmen commit atrocities! If you're mad that dUh gOoD gUys didn't get the chance to heroically vanquish dUh eViL qUeEn Cersei & give you a satisfying end, then good. Real wars rarely have satisfying desensitized endings. Didn't George just say he had the set pieces and final conclusions envisioned in his head for many years but he has to write, re-write, evolve with time? That's an indirect acknowledgement this was his baby. Casuals didn't care for books. Their gut punch was they couldn't believe the show would have the audacity to make them feel stupid for putting their faiths in the hands of demagogic "liberators" & not being able to enjoy NPC mass slaughter as they're forced to feel bad for the likes of Jaime, who btw had a better full circle any happy go lucky ass ending would've done for his character.

The reason is that you consider this bit of editing such a huge issue is that you don't consider Sam and Brienne to be protagonists, but side characters, when in reality they are the main characters when it comes to the future of the Realm, both working tirelessly and unglamorously behind the scenes with courage and integrity. Major! The end of a long, incredible journey my guy. You are still by far, the best GOT reactor out there. Excited to watch you on new adventures!
Initially, I was pissed about Jon's fate, Major. But now, it's my favorite. Jon never wanted a throne; never wanted accolades, riches, or power. He would have been utterly miserable in King's Landing. Now, Jon returns to the one place he fit in. Like Tormund told Jon: "you have the North in you. The REAL North." Bran likely saw Jon's past with the Wildlings, and sent him to a place he can truly be happy. Now in hindsight seeing him ride off with Tormund and Ghost, I think it's the perfect ending for him as a character.
One thing I really didn't like?? How the hell would the Ironborn agree to stay a part of the Kingdoms? Didn't make sense to me.
As far as George RR Martin, he did give some of his eventual ending points to the showrunners for these final seasons; so some of what we saw IS what is planned for the books. But it sounds like a huge chunk will indeed be completely different. Will be interesting to see how the two differ!

Apart from that, he said recently that he wasn't a part of the final seasons and when asked why, he said "ask the showrunners". About the Dany and Jon ending, the showrunners admitted it was their idea. About the ending in the books, he is finishing the last chapters for some of the characters THIS week, on the second to last book, so he might end it in the next months hopefully. He said the more he writes, the more the ending gets different from the ending of the show so that's good news. About Jon ending beyond the wall, he went back to the only place he ever felt loved and respected so that's definitely not the worst part

It's funny, watching some reaction channels off and on, starting in like season 6 I'll see some watchers notice some things like last second kills and they're like "Ok, that was a little conveniently timed" and then as the seasons go on it just grows more and more until season 8 everyone's like "What the hell is going on right now?" I guess I can say that almost everyone else in in this same boat. Everyone wanted it to end better, but such is life. Just have to hope House of the Dragon can come through.

Just finished binging all your GoT videos and now I'm sad, LOL. It was so much fun, despite not getting to watch them in real time. Looking forward to watching your HotD reactions once I check out the show myself.

I am so glad to have gone on this journey with you major. I am happy we were able to see these characters conclude their stories in the way they did. Jon became King in the North and Dany sailed West to kick Cersie's ass. I'm sad the show ended on such a cliff hanger but the watch was worth it, as all the character arcs ended on a decent note. Totally no such thing as a Season 7 or 8.
All joking aside, your watch has now ended, Winter Wolf. Thank you for such an in-depth intellectual commentary on this show. Keep doing what you do.

"This is bad writing" I say, while tilting my fedora, and letting everyone know my idea of good writing is Jaime creeping up on Cersei to stab stab stab her before taking his face off to reveal everyone's friendly X-Men Arya Stark; and Dany Potter being flown on a dragon's back straight to the iron throne to rule happily ever after, while everyone punches the air in ecstacy as their revenge quota gets a check mark 🤮. The massive cringe aside, does anyone think the mood of this episode was conducive to scenes like that? Was the tonal direction of the show ever headed towards that when the opposite was being telegraphed since Sam and Jon's conversation in the Crypts? How are these dudes gonna criticize the writing when they can't even interpret the tone? I have seen dudes waiting for a random Greyworm Jon fight on some "how can a show end without a good conquers evil fight sequence" right up until the epilogue! Even when Brienne is writing Jaime's chapter they expect a fight coming!! How you think it was pulled off is a matter of subjectivity, but there was enough buildup, enough pointers about Dany's ruling style leading to catastrophe. From the balcony of Meereen with Barristan to Dragonstone. People just refused to see it.

    They ruined our khaleesi 😭
P.S. yes I know her fate was inevitable but they didn’t even give her enough story and development to fully flesh out her madness. It wasn’t earned

It was epic to take this ride with you Major. Ended the only way a show like this could...in a manner that was different than the feel-good endings we have grown acustom to. GRR wanted to do 10 seasons, I believe, to help flesh out Danny's fall. It felt rushed in this way for certain. Other than that, the books are so much different. I wanted Jon to be King too. Pretty much wanted all the same things/had same thoughts/reactions you did along this journey. It's been a pleasure, Major!

This entire ending was overwhelmingly corny and "feel-good" though, that's what was so jarring imo. All the main characters left got the best possible endings they could. I wanted Jon to be King too but he was the happiest when he was North of the wall where he ended up, Sansa is Queen of The North, Arya off doing whatever she wants I guess, Bran the literal King of Westeros, Tyrion the King's hand which he has proved more than once to be terrible at, all the "evil" characters and threats are defeated, it's only the good guys left living their best lives! This is a sugary sweet feel-good ending with everything wrapped up in a pretty bow like a fairy tale (except the giant gaping plot holes left open but whatever). It just felt so forced and contrived because nothing leading to it felt earned or made much sense. If Dany's turn was done well and given more time I could've accepted the journey and enjoyed the happy ending but because that character (and many others tbh) were done so dirty to make the endings happen it felt so flat. It was just so disappointing how the producers rushed and frankly, butchered this story.

As far as the SHOW goes, from what I have read, watched and reviewed, it still seems that even years later, the masterstroke everyone has missed is one word.
