  • This is the "Vandal" project. It's a 2001 Chevrolet 1500 Truck that I'm cleaning up to be my new daily driver. After my move back home to San Antonio, I noticed that traffic was much busier. To avoid wrecking my Blue truck or getting it stolen, I decided to retire it to "Toy" status and get a cheap work truck.
    Specs:
    2001 half ton with 130k miles
    4.8L Engine
    4L60e Trans

    Thanks for another great video. It's so helpful that you include stuff that doesn't work as well as what does. True gearheads help each other out and you're one of the best. We met at 2016 LS Fest. I was the guy that asked about Air Force sized t-shirts.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому

      Thank you Chris! That's it man! That's what it's all suppose to be about. There's too much negativity in the world already. This is how it should be, working together as a team and enjoying it. You going to be at LS Fest 2017? I'm planning on it.

    • @eugene9323
      @eugene9323 7 років тому

      I'm planning on being at LS Fest this year too. Last year was my first time there and I really like how it's done. I won't be LS powered by then but my LQ4 should be on the stand and started. I'm planning on the Hot Rod Power Tour also.

    • @AGearHead4Life

      I'm paid up and have leave requested for Power Tour. I'll definitely have the 88 R10 Burb and if she can make it a 77 Corvette. Since it's going to St Louis and Bowling Green it just seems wrong not to take the Vette.

    I did the hydroboost swap on my 02 1/2 ton 4x4 silverado. That was probably the best money that I spent on that truck.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому

      Man, that is what I'm expecting. I've already picked up the hydroboost setup for both the Vandal and the Family Wagon. I can't wait to get it on. One things slowing me down is that I want to make my own lines/hoses for it. I'd like to route them in a way that'll have a clean presentation, better than they cam from GM. They kinds seem like a spider web from the factory. Not horribly bad, but I'd just like to see what I can do. I've already got the tools to make them so why not.

      Thanks man. I thinking the same about later on for the wheels. Yea, it takes forever to get around Texas. When I got stationed in AL, I found it crazy that 30 mins in three different direction and I could be in a different state. lol I'm use to being in the middle of Texas and taking at least 3 hours to get to another state.

    Mark I have the same brand phone mount, it's awesome. Little tip, you can put the metal plate between your phone and your case and it will still work perfect, and you will never see it either.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому

      thanks man! yea, i considered that, but preferred to have the sticky on my case instead of the phone. Plus my phone is huge, so I figured itd work a lil better being on the outside. I freakin love those mounts though man. So damn handy. I've got at least one in every vehicle.

  • @altosset11

    Heck yeah man. Love the truck, those new lights and bumpers will make a big difference! You should make a video on the remote start, Im thinking of installing one in my truck

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому

      Thanks Jose! Yea, I'm trying to think of a way to present how to hook them up. It's not an easy task ant takes at least a day, maybe two, to install it. Older vehicles would be easier though. The video I make will likely only cover pointing people in the direction of how to get the info needed to install it, since they've made it very difficult for the DIY guys to do it themselves. they hide the manuals and push people to have a certified installing install htem.

    What's the benefit of the Rev limiter. Where is is set stock?

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому +2

      Stock is around 5500, if I remember correctly. The limiter that you saw in this video was only for when the vehicle is in park or neutral. I did that for two reason. First, I dont need the engine to rev past 4k with no load on it. Second is because its fun to pull up to your buddies house, rev it up and bounce off the limiter. 4k isn't bad. Most people would just floor it to get someones attention and who knows how far it'd rev then.

    Did it throw a code when you removed the cat's,if so is there any way to remedy that? I have a 97 2500 3/4 ton Suburban with a 7.4 liter in it that needs a Flow Master!! what remote start did you use? and how much does it cost?

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому

      +Cesar Canales I used a Viper 5806v. They run as cheap as $125 on Amazon, but it's some work installing them. They make it difficult for DIY guys to do. They hide the installation instructions and push everyone to a certified installer. I even had to purchase a Too to program the DBALL module to allow the remote start on this vehicle. It easier on older vehicles.

    Love the wheels! Makes me Jones for Silverado! How's the Tahoe? Any upgrades to your wife's ride? Didn't keep that motor stock for too long did you! Looks great! Love the videos! How's the Camaro doing? Glad you guys are getting all set up in Texas!

      Thanks man! Oh yea, the wires Tahoe (Family Wagon) will be getting an intro video soon. I've lowered it and put nice mild wheels on it. I recorded the install of the Belltech drop kit on it too. So far the engine on the Tahoe is still stock. Im strongly considering putting the engine out of my stolen '84 C10 into it though, but I'll keep the cam mild. The Camaro is coming up soon to be worked on finally. I just took it off of the trailer last week.

      AGearHead4Life your family wagon is the body style I loved the most out of the Tahoe's! I had an 07 Tahoe and that one had a great motor but was the first vehicle I had where the rear brake calipers fell off and caused a lot of damage! My wife has a 2015 Suburban so we get our fix that way. I am not allowed to wrench on it! I can't wait to see what you post next and want to thank you for the work you are doing for the videos! You should put that other motor in the family wagon, that's my 2 cents!

      I appreciate your understanding and support making these videos brother.
      Yea, it'll likely get that motor. The main reason that I was considering swapping that engine in, is because her Tahoe has that annoying pistons slap on cold start. Drives me crazy.

    • @cw2lido
      @cw2lido 7 років тому +1

      AGearHead4Life I know that sound all too well! You could always do a tear down of that motor and show why that happens. Unless you already have a video posted! Yes the caliper fell off, and acted as a chalk-block, cutting up the rim. I had those GM 20's on it too. Annoying was what that was! Great gas-mileage for a truck!

    Vandal looks outstanding! Cut a long bed, though? Me, someday I want to pick up a regular cab long bed 1998 K2500. I always liked those. However, years ago my Dad had a regular cab short bed 2000 K1500 and it was a blast to drive. Almost as fun as his old 1980 K10.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому

      thanks!
      Yea, short beds are more visually appealing for a street truck. I'm actually now likely going to go with even shorter than a short bed and just use a bed off of a quad cab truck. lol Theyre easier to find.

    • @rockymtnredneck4888

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому

      Cleaner engine bay and easier to work on since you have it in the way (thats not too big of a deal though). Mainly just to keep crap out of the bay thats not needed. the newer LS engines dont even come with it anymore. Some will say that theres a performance advantage to not having it as well.

    Nice work. Loving make things look and run great again too. Just did all new brake lines and stainless lines as well has new calipers(suv back) (05 up fronts) on the truck too. I got my rear calipers with brackets pads and rotors and even came powdercoated for like 280 bucks on ebay so you may want to check it out. Fronts I got at the junkyard off a new truck. The thing will stop like crazy now. I don't know if I missed it by why upgrade/change the power steering pulley?

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому

      The power steering pulley upgrade is not a huge issue. I'm doing it because it looks much better. Also, if you ever need to remove the PS pump, you can do it without having to remove the pulley, like with the factory pulley. With the newer truck pulley, you can put your tool right through the pulley to remove the PS pump bolts.
      That's nice man. I can't wait to get my brakes on. I want to paint the junk yard calipers and brackets first. I just learned about using SUV rear brakes about two weeks ago. So I still need to snag those.

    • @reviewcrewforyou
      @reviewcrewforyou 7 років тому +1

      Nice i did some googling and saw the difference in pullies and will be doing that in the future. The rear brakes are the ones i purchased here www.ebay.com/itm/401196506977?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2648&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
      Like you I also got fronts from a junkyard. I may eventually do the hydroboost but the truck stops great as is right now.

      @reviewcrewforyou 7 років тому +1

      Yes it worked . Thanks! that will make things easier. I think I ended up calling them to make sure brackets were included and they were. You may have to do the same. Also the picture shows single piston but they were dual.

      Well, I've kept track of every purchase. But there's a few things that make it hard to say what the total build cost will be. One, some of the extra things that I bought, you might not care for, so they could be subtracted. I mean, it was running and driving legal for under $2k. Also, do I include the title and registration cost? I'm actually trying to go through the list of what I spent on the truck and categorize the purchases so that one could separate what had to be spent and what is optional.

    You should do a 2002 2500HD front end swap. And might be a good idea/upgrade to do is to swap out the fuel pump with a newer and powerful one.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому

      Yea, exactly. I'd do a roll pan on a sport truck specific build, but I'm usually working out of them still. I use the bumper a lot to get in and out of the bed loading stuff. Plus the protection of the bumper to stop things before they hit the body is good. Something about keeping the bumper and going against the grain excites me too..

      Thanks Randy! My main reason for deleting the EGR is to clean up the engine bay. It'll make it easier to work on the engine and have a better appearance. But most will delete the EGR to get it out of the way for better performance and less things to possibly give problems down the road.

      That's a cool idea! Though I'd prefer a cheaper method and I'm not a fan of the carbon fiber look because it's used too often. Guess I could paint it. But I'd assume that fiberglass would be cheaper.

    that turns out to be a nice truck , a little work whent a pretty long way , dont think you can get a low milage truck without that sort of damage for wat you spend on it sofar normally
    you might be able to make it a shortbed without cutting the frame in half
    from wat i seen on pictures the frame is mostly straight behind the cab , if it is you could just move the rear leafspring mounts and axle forward get shortbed front leafspring mounts (they mount nearer to the cab on the Z of the original frame and are prolly stubbier and lob the excess of the rear of the frame , you need new mountingpoints for the bed and you prolly need to move some of the crossbraces and mountingholes on the frame (the one on the verry rear holding the bumper/ towhook and between the rearspring mountingpoint at least )
    no weak point on the frame between the wheels because there would be no welds there , the truck might even have the holes allready punched intoo the frame for the shortbed setup
    the bleu truck becomes a toy truck huh : good reason to turbo it as would make it a fun dragtruck , there a few of those build allready done with good results (prolly need to add a rollbar to be legal on the track though as those ls engines respond pretty well to a turbo)
    i like the way this guy did it , it mounts the turbo verry solidly and it doesnt taken a lot of work to get the plumbing made to fit :

    think youre would need the stiffer vavesprings a scavengepump some mild steel and silicone piping , a boostrefferenced fuelpressure regulator a wastegate and a ebay turbo
    you allready have the cam hp tuner and bigger injectors

    Truck came a long ways. Check out my channel I have pretty much this same truck that I made a shortbed using a crewcab 5'8" bed for the "cool" factor (at least I think so ha)

    Any plans for a lq4 swap?

      Nah, I'm not a big fan of them. Mainly because they're too popular. Everyone wanting one makes me not want one. Plus I can make money selling them and just run a 5.3. You can get plenty of power out of the 5.3. Shoot, my blue C10 truck is a 5.3 and it's a blast to drive!

      AGearHead4Life true enough...i guess it is different down in the states compared to Canada for the truck scene, alot of high dollar diesel builds And not alot of clean street trucks

      yea, there's a lot of big diesel trucks here too, but a man will have to sell their house to try and keep building and fixing those. lol

      It opens up a whole new world of opportunities. you've just got to be a computer nerd to have the patience to learn it. Luckily I am somewhat of a nerd.

    Great Vid, I also have a pair of 5.3 manifolds, I'm by sea world, my buddy has a really nice setup of led headlights on his 99 Silverado I can get the info for you if you need too just send me an email, looking forward for an upcoming video on the bigger front break upgrade cause that's what I need to do on my 2003 Silverado

      Mando Rey I can tell you that the biggest brake upgrade will by from the hydroboost conversion, but the larger breaks will definitely help and look better. That and the SUV rear brake conversion. I believe those have dual piston Calipers.

      Mando Rey I'd be interested is seeing your buddy's lights. Ive already got the LEDs for this truck and putting them in now. Huge difference!

    Don't chop it into a short bed. Trust me you will need a long bed from time to time

      MrMSA90 Yea, I understand that, but I can't resist the craving to accomplish that type of project to check it off my list. I have already appreciated the room in the bed while hauling stuff.
