    At 26 I almost lost my left eye notching a small piece of 1/4" steel with some bolt cutters, no safety glasses on, the piece of metal ricocheted of the floor and split my left eye lid wide open, I was Lucky the sound of the metal snapping made me blink, had to get my eye lid sewed back together but I learned my lesson, it will happen when you least expect it Stay safe Gearheads

      Thank you for helping express the importance man. It always happens when we least expect it. That's why we often have a habit of not wearing the PPE until we learn the hard way. It's best just to start out with the mindset of how its mandatory. I'm 38 and just now teaching myself to make it mandatory. It's the way to go! Safety should always be first.

    Awesome video! Great tips on safety, I’m another 30 year old who only picked up safety gear a few years ago.
    One quick tip, when using punches I like to clamp vise grips on the punch to use as a handle, I don’t hit my hand quite as much anymore 🤣

    Looks like you could of used a plasma cutter for this task. Be cool if some high dollar welding company sponsored you and hooked you up with one. Some day man keep it up you do inspire me to get out and do some work, or a least try😅😉😂

      On a longbed you really can't do that because the axle would hit the gas tank unless you put in a in bed tank...and who wants to do that

    Excellent advice brother. The 2 main people who advocate for PPE are: People that were not wearing it, and wish they were, or someone who was wearing it and had a slip. Everyone's a tough guy or thinks they're invincible, untill they loose a finger, or an eye.

    I think it's funny that you mention safety protection in this video, because I'm a body tech and about a month ago i cut half my pinky off and my wedding finger, i had to get 11 stitches for my fingers. even tho i was wearing my safety gear i got careless and almost cut my fingers off. i still have them but i can't feel all of my pinky finger anymore. and by the way just started my ls swap in my 87 r10 motor is hoping going in soon.

    Punches and chisels work much better with hunks of bar (whatever is handy including rebar which is easy to hold with gloves) for frame rivet removal because the handles get your hands out of the way for better vision and freedom to go apeshit with a hand sledge. I did that at various angles to several of my punches and chisels (I harvest all sorts of stuff like cab mounts in salvages where grinders are forbidden) and it's a major time and pain saver. I prick punch rivet heads then pilot drill (cobalt bits always, I buy ten packs) and finish drill just under hole size then a sharp chisel makes very short work of the rivets. BTW the reason punches and chisels don't come with handles is it would more than double the cost and make shipping much more expensive, but functionally it's an awesome addition.
    When we go LS hunting we bring Diablo Auto Dismantling recip saw blades and often take the whole front end including severing frame rails with only one blade and it's still got life left afterwards. Slaying donors is fun!

  • @watahyahknow
    @watahyahknow 7 років тому

    looks great sofar , looking at the frame with the bed off , you couldve only moved the springhangers but the shock mounts wouldve been of and the axle would be under the lower piece of the frame hitting it
    think the way youre doing it is the nicest and most factory looking way in the end

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому

      Thanks! Yea, another way that someone showed me and may be faster, is to move all of the crossmembers forward and chop of the rear of the frame. One issue with that is that the frame raises over the axle for travel clearance, where its at now. I wanted to maintain that. But I guess that I could have just C-notched the frame to make clearance also. Lots of options. Many ways to skin a cat. I'll likely try a different way next time, just for the experience.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому

      BTW, also moving the crossmember is important because it runs snuggly though the fuel tank.

    Just weld the spring hangers to the frame (If it's possible to do) or upgrade the haul rear suspension

    • @AGearHead4Life

      I did consider that. It looks like it'd be tight to weld the side close to the first row bed mounts, but still may be possible.

    Thank you for doing this, this is prob the most well thought out and comprehensive mod on a NBS on UA-cam. @ 03:59 when you talk about using a hanger from a short bed or extended cab... If I have a long bed extended cab will I also need one (or need to modify as you have done)? I'm considering doing this and I have an extended cab long bed and wondering if I can get away with what I have and not have to modify the hanger at all?

    • @AGearHead4Life

    Is it possible to do this conversion without chopping the frame and re welding? By cutting the rear part of the frame only? Then just relocating the mounting holes and re locating the hanger and shackle brackets? Or even making new bed mounting holes on the bed and frame?.. I ask because my welding skills aren’t very good.

      Thanks RptrKlr57! I'm trying hard to leave the engine alone for a while because I still have the turbo LS '92 Camaro project to wrap up. But once I do get back around to it, I'm thinking very mild cam, if any and building a turbo kit for it. I want to keep it very mild since it's only purpose is to be my daily driver parts hauler. I'm even trying to convince myself to stay with a stock cam with the turbo... but that's just hard for me to do. I have a LS6 cam that I may slap into it.. Then of course once I go turbo, I'll like upgrade the trans to a 80e, since. I will be putting the 3.73 gears and limited slip in it soon also. Probalby while the beds off, since that'll make it easier.

      Cool Freddy! You got this man. I'd search around the C10 forums for photos of how others have reinforced theirs, but it sounds like you've got hte idea. Fish plate both side and I'd box in the C frame too.

    Is this cheaper than buying a new short bed truck? Asking for my husband 🤗

      i would say yes especially if you guys do the work yourselves vs paying shop rates the parts needed aren’t too expensive to buy

    So I can cut the long bed frame off and weld on Short bed frame

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  6 років тому

      You could, but it’d be less work to just remove the 14” from the long bed frame and use it like I did in these videos.

    I know this is off subject but can you do a video on how you hooked air up too your cherry picker too assist you

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому

      Sure! I love my cherry picker. So I many just do a full overview of it one day. I've made a couple mods to it to make things easier to use. BTW, to use air, i'm just using an air-over-hydraulic ram from Harbor Freight. It just bolts right in place of the original one.

      AGearHead4Life thanks brother I've never seen one of those air over hydraulic cherry pickers before and I've worked in many shops for over 15 years

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому

      No problem man! I love that things man. It lets you hold a hose and tap a button to slowing lift the engine. That allows you to look around the engine to make sure that your not breaking things. but of course the main part is how easy it is to just hit a button to lift now vs pumping that things forever.

      Here's a link. Not sure if it's the exact one that I got, but likely is. I think I got it on sale for about $70 though. www.harborfreight.com/8-ton-long-ram-air-hydraulic-jack-94562.html

    Random Question 5.3 vs 6.0 in my c10 swb would a 6.0 really make much more power than 5.3 or is the power difference not much is it worth the extra money over a 5.3 or is the power difference not worth the extra $$$

    • @shawntims3817
      @shawntims3817 7 років тому +1

      depends on what your budget is and what your goals are

    • @trouxa952
      @trouxa952 7 років тому +1

      Cassandra Diaz Exactly what Shawn Times said, what are doing with the truck. Are you gonna boost it, do you have an HP goal, is it for cruising/burnouts, street/strip use. All those things are considerations.

    • @cassandradiaz2368
      @cassandradiaz2368 7 років тому

      well I'm looking for street racing/track racing I want it to be a all motor truck I'm also gonna cruise in it here and there but that's it I just wanna go fast that's it is the difference gonna be big if I go with a 6.0 over the 5.3 lm7

    • @shawntims3817
      @shawntims3817 7 років тому +1

      Cassandra Diaz for all motor I would go 6.0 if the budget allows but either way if your gonna beat on it hard I would get a 4l80e transmission no matter what motor you go with they are pretty indestructible, trust me a 4l80e is Money well spent, for all motor put a good cam, decent stall converter (I like something in the 3500-4000 rpm range), some steeper ring and pinion gear like 4.10-4.56 range (depends on wheel and tire size), a nice free flowing exhaust, and a good tune

      will the power difference between a cammed & tuned & exhaust 5.3 and a cammed & tuned & exhaust 6.0 will the 6.0 make a lot more power or will it be close its gonna go in a swb c-10 1980

      I'd expect that it'd be the same as this if it's a '99 and newer. Like I said in the video though, I'm just figuring it out as I go. From what I've heard though, all the '99 and newer were built like this.
