    Those oil in blue drums are likely send off to factory that process them to biofuels. We have ppl buy these “gutter oil” from restaurants directly. They would offer to set a drum behind our business, and give us 10-$20 everytime they come to pickup the oil. It’s for recycling for biofuels.

    • @sirant
      @sirant  Місяць тому +7

      I have no doubt it is MUCH more profitable to sell this too biofuel manufacturers rather than street vendors. And much more legal. Why risk prison over scooping stuff out of the sewer?

    • @danielch6662
      @danielch6662 Місяць тому

      @@pbworld7858 there were probably people who looked at the prices of biofuels vs cooking oil, and decided that they can clean up the oil enough to be used again. For cooking. Using industrial grade filtration techniques and some fancy chemistry. And THOSE would be the people arrested and prosecuted. THIS is the actual gutter oil. It's just a slang term that got mangled in translation. Nobody is scooping them from sewers. What restaurant would be dumping so much oil you could scoop them from the sewers? The water from flushing toilets, and washing dishes would far overwhelm the amount of used cooking oil thrown away. Cooking oil isn't free, and no restaurant would be throwing them away at this rate.

  • @stephenleung9189

    Chinese people recycle oil to be used as lubricants and fuel for farming equipment and factory machineries. The recycling oil didn’t come from gutters but collected carefully in dedicated containers only.

      @danielch6662 Місяць тому

      Gutter oil does NOT come from gutters or sewers. It is a mistranslation of an idiom. A sort of slang. Just like those water filled rockets.
      Just think about it. No matter how much oil the restaurant is dumping into the drain, there is just no way you could possibly scoop it out. If the drain was not backed up, it would flow away before you can scoop it out. If it is backed up, it would smell so bad, no amount of processing will make it edible. You'd gag from the smell alone.
      Here's the clincher. The people scooping out oil from the gutter, can just go directly to the restaurant: _don't throw away your used oil down the drain, here are a couple of large containers. We will come by once a month and pay you $20 each._ This oil is clean so less processing needed. You don't waste time scooping from the gutter. The oil is already in the containers. Takes 2 minutes to carry them to your truck and you're on the way to the next restaurant, instead of half an hour trying to scoop oil from the sewer.
      If the restaurants ask, tell them you're making biodiesel. The people arrested and prosecuted were instead cleaning up the oil (perhaps with industrial filtration, and some chemicals) and putting it back into the food chain. THIS is in fact actual gutter oil. Oil that should have been thrown away, but was somehow redirected back into the human food supply. It was never in the sewers.
      Just think of how much oil would need to be dumped by a restaurant for there to be enough to be floating in the sewer you can scoop it out. No restaurant would be dumping that much oil. The drain holes in their kitchen sink aren't even big enough for oil to be flowing at this rate.
      What about the videos? Either lifted from movies, or people dressing up and making those videos on a lark because they thought it funny to illustrate the slang term in a very literal way.

      @Ray Your sarcasm is unwarranted. Instances of 'gutter oil' were well documented and rightly condemned and punished by the Chinese people and Chinese media and Chinese authorities decades ago, including in Taiwan, well before it became a perennially recycled hitpiece in the west. Such instances have drastically reduced in the past decade, in no small part because you will get hit with the death penalty -- because apparently the 'CCP is evil' and 'Xi is a dictator whose anti-corruption campaign is only against his political opponents and not actually to make China better'.
      No, my comment is pointing out the fact that, while you may see a select few grainy videos from over a decade ago, and a few of those videos might legitimately be 'gutter oil', you should also do your due diligence and make sure each and every video is actually about gutter oil rather than some sanitation worker clearing the gutters like how it is also done in the west, or some industrial worker collecting the oil for non-food industrial processing, as is also done in the west.

      @@sitoudien9816 Keyword: "Additionally". Chinese people and Chinese authorities, including those in Taiwan, have already been prosecuting those types of criminals for decades with great success before this topic became a recycled western hitpiece. And it comes with the territory that the ones making the hitpieces often rely on fake or out of context videos. So it isn't that those types of criminals do not exist; rather, do some basic due diligence to fact-check or they will try to convince you that this issue is far more prevalent than it actually is.

    The laws will have changed, the one most people are completely unaware of fat traps in sewer lines from restaurants. Fats clog up sewer lines, restaurants of any major size require specific traps to catch the fats, where it is pumped out by special trucks and taken to disposal sites. In most modern countries, yes, fats are taken out from the sewer in specially designed traps on the property of any restaurant and scooped on out, well pumped from those traps when they are full, been going on for decades. Decades ago China sewerage authorities would have caught up and started requiring fat traps in restaurant sewerage systems, this to prevent those fats blocking up sewer lines. So in more modern areas of China it would be impossible to see clumps of fat floating in sewer water.

    Agreed, these gutter oil stories aren't new. The big issue with gutter oil in China was around 2011-2013.
    I remember it being big news on CCTV, even they said as much as 10% of the edible oil could be considered gutter oil (although I believe them mean reprocessed from used oil, not the stuff dug out of sewers). There was a big operation in Yunnan that was in the Chinese media, it was pretty large. I felt better being in Beijing though, the local news implied this was more of an issue in rural China. Can't say it wasn't a big problem, but it has been remedied.
    But now prepare for the 罐车运输乱象 onslaught to take over the hater news cycles. Now the big story is the edible oil being transported in trucks also used in the chemical industry. It is all over the Chinese social media now. My in-laws and friends are talking about a big deal, I am surprised it isn't being 'hidden' yet. This is the problem, when these things happen they also lend credibility to the stories of things like the gutter oil. We were talking about this last night with my Chinese side of the family, they were remembering the cardboard in the dumplings scandal and the melamine in the milk and baby formula scandels but the oil truck outrage seems to be much worse (except the baby formula scandal). Prepare for the China bashing to focus on this one.

      @@chuthao6303 yes, canola oil is RAPESEED oil - only fit for industrial use, not fit for human consumption, yet some one up there in north america, after receiving $, cleared n promote canola oil as healthy. Why EU banned canola oil ?

      How do you come to that conclusion? Canola has a similar structure to Olive Oil, it's mono-unsaturated, and therefore has good shelf life, and low rancidity. This is different from most other seed and nut oils, soybean and corn oil, which are polyunsaturated, and therefore have many bonds open to grab onto oxygen molecules and become rancid faster.
      Personally, I try not to use refined oils at all, but if I was doing a lot of frying, or deep-frying, canola would be a good choice.
