Thanks for reviewing these tools!
Of course
Thanks for this video! Just came across your channel and this was my first watch. Really enjoyed it!
Glad you liked it and hope you stick around! Learning things the hard way so you don't have to..
Thanks for this video. I actually live in upstate South Carolina so this video is extremely helpful for me as I should be able to use the same grass seed that you use. I have a Scott Deluxe spreader and I used some of their Weed and Feed product to kill some crabgrass but I hasn't worked quite as well as I had hope. I will be using your channel to improve my lawn big time now.
Awesome, Garth! Thanks and hope you stick around!
@@TheLawnReview Thank you very much. I definitely will be sticking around!!!!

Thanks for the video congratulations on the new baby
Thanks, Dennis! Glad you liked it.
Great info, Good delivery!
Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching!
Dude, this is the first time I’ve heard someone explain the problems with the standard Scott’s broadcast spreader! Explains so many of the problems I’ve had the past couple seasons. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! There are definitely better options out there.
@@TheLawnReview hey the cheap one is definitely not cheap its $136, I have to admit I saw the same issue of the fertilizers sticking to the inside of the wheels in my spreader. I do not want to spend upwards of $100 for a spreader, what do you think about handheld spreaders which are like $30 ?
That’d be fine if you don’t have a huge lawn!
They are garbage
I don’t have an issue with the Scott’s spreader you are supposed to go back I forth in one direction and then a second time back and forth perpendicular to the previous direction. That eliminates those lines.
However if you use a drop spreader it takes longer but lays it down nicely.
Trying to sleep and this played after another video. With it being grass related I let it play. Once you mentioned the army worms it got my attention. I just started on my yard a couple yrs ago and got hit with them too. Go figure im in the Nashville area as well. I definitely subscribed. Currently on the yard mastery app and plan. Its definitely looking better this year but have a lot of poa.
Thanks for watching and subscribing! How have you like the Yard Mastery App?
I guess my response didn't post the other morning. The app is pretty slick other than the store can be buggy. Once you register a soil sample with them the results will post in the app and they'll give recommendations "based" of the results. Also gives soil temp in app. Keeps up with when and what you've treated the yard with. I'm really happy with it. Especially to be free.
I’m with you man I love high cut tall fescue!
It is the best looking
Great videos ! I just subscribed. Keep up the great work !
Thanks, Steve!
I agree about the spreader. Scott’s should have made the top of their wheels flat so the material isn’t blocked.
Yep or raised the whole thing up
Mrs. 9. Health is important. Family needs you. 加油加油
Agreed!
You are so damn right. I've used scotts seeds and my neighbors didn't use anything.. I have a thicker lawn yes but also the most weeds than anyone in the neighborhood 😂😂😂.. I've always wondered why.. finally got that answer.. I've been buying weeds together with the grass seeds.. and spending extra to get rid of the weeds after..
Join me in the conspiracy!
Zone 5. Mow at 1 3/4 to 2 1/2. Spring and fall. 3 inches in summer heat. 2 3/4 in summer cool.
Boom. Got it down.
I feel attacked with the reel mower comments 😂😂. You and I were on the exact same page with all of our tips. We pretty much dropped the same video, on the exact same day lol. Good stuff bro. Keep em coming!
Haha! You have much more patience than I do apparently. Thanks man!
Not the way grass is mowed in the warm season grass areas. You should clarify your area and type of grass instead of telling folks how all grass should be cut tall. Bermuda, Zoysia and similar cultivars in the south thrive by being cut very short.
I've had to drop my cut height on cool season grasses for two reasons. One eliminating the seed heads and leftover stalks in the spring. Promote drying of the turf. I have too much fungus issues, especially pythium blight despite all the various fungicides. I cut now at 2.5" instead of the recommended 3-4".
Do you use a dethatcher at all? Those can help your soil breathe better so you dont get fungus during this time of year.
I used to cut my mostly KBG lawn at 3" in spring and 3.5" in summer. 2yrs ago I dropped it to 2.5" spring and 3" in summer, and last year I dropped it again to 2" in spring and 2.5" summer. I have found that 2" until the seeds are done in June makes it look far better in the summer when I cut at 2.5". Last year I cut every 4 days, shooting for every 5 days this year.
dude great video. tons of great info. also....mow high!!!! 😂😂
Amen! Thanks for watching and commenting
Forgot to sub the last few I watched. That ego multi tool one I think was the last one. Well done stuff.
Thank you! Which has been your favorite? Any feedback or requests?
Just found your videos. Looking forward to more. So glad you wont use a reel mower. Ive been looking for someone doing videos with methods most people can use.
That's our goal! Thanks for the compliment.
Still here since that one video went crazy and showed up on my recommendations. Will be here until you pull out a Reel mower. I like to leave comments too so the engagement goes up.
Thank you! Reel mower is unlikely but we never say never....
Oh, dope! You’re in Nashville too? I’m out in Cheatham county doing a partial renovation at the moment.
Nice man! That’s beautiful country! How’s the reno going?
@@TheLawnReview put down my seed and fertilizer last week and been watering plenty, just waiting for now! Planning to try a full reno in a separate section of my yard this fall when I should realistically have done this one 😂
Congrats on the brand new human on the way!
Thanks Troy! Can’t wait!! Hopefully he’ll be mowing my lawn this time next year….
You forgot to put the promised links to your guides in the description :P
congratulations
Thank you!
PGR makes my roots deep and I can cut low with a rotary around an inch. I get great results.
Glad you like it! What type of grass?
@@TheLawnReview Kentucky blue gras and perennial rye mix.
I have two blades I swap out regularly. The blade I remove I clean and then sharpen and put a rust inhibitor on it waiting until the other starts to have a noticeable difference in cut quality.
@@Funknwanker Very impressive.
Good thoughts. But everyone loves a low cut. My back yard I go down to 1 or 1.5 inch. Front yard I go 2 inches.
Low cuts definitely look better but can burn up your grass quickly. Does well with warm season grasses.
You may be right about Scott’s weed seed. Used Scott’s on back lawn and Johnathan Green Ultra on front. Have significant more weeds in back now
It's definitely a deep conspiracy but I think it is true.
@@TheLawnReview I've bought Jonathan Green BB Ultra several years now and they always have around .03% weed in the seed bag. Just the way it is.
@@gugion It shouldn't have to be this way!
I once lived on a street somewhere where almost everyone but me burnt their lawns in the Spring. I thought they were all crazy until I realized how beautiful their lawns were compared to mine. I didn’t realize until this video that the reason for burning your lawn would be for the carbon as it’s cheaper than buying it… unless you burn your house down, of course, which is why I never tried burning my lawn! I have liked and subscribed.😊
Wow - I don't think I've seen people actually burn their lawns. I think buying charcoal is a lot easier and safer
They may have also been doing other things. Something as simple as spreading compost or chicken feed puts carbon in the soil. Humic acid and alfalfa are amazing for lawns...
@@mab8311 Humic acid is huge for lawns! I put some down earlier this year
Great viceo
Thank you! Hope you stick around.
Can’t mow high on most warm season grasses (with the exception of St.Augustine) . You should clarify in your video that you have a cool season grass that likes to be cut high. Different grasses grow differently and have different characteristics which require different treatment.
Hi Dave! I appreciate the comment and you watching the video. I agree that it does need some clarification! I’d still argue that MOST of the time grass does better if it’s cut in the high range of it’s recommended growth height range. But thanks again for watching & good luck this year!
@@TheLawnReview I have TIFF AND Zoysia, my tiff thrives at 3/4”. When it grows at 1-1/2” it thins out and is more prone to weeds.
My man
@@TheLawnReview i have a question related to this as well. I have a cool season lawn ( Nebraska). We have tiny dogs and they're absolutely buried in the grass if its more than 3 inches tall in fact 2 inches or less is ideal but i dont have a reel mower or time do to that.
Any suggestions for keeping the lawn looking nice if I keep it pretty short?
@@Brett_Nebraska lots of spoon feeding nutrients and consistent mowing so you dont stress the lawn out. lots of water too
Would you consider a video on those that have a small lawn and want to go liquid for fertilizing and weed control. I still have to measure my lawn and will walk it as I have tried online and my arrows were all over the place. When I get the number I would start on the back property which is much bigger and try the dry stuff and hope I do not get into trouble. Possibly a program as follows. Spril, soil 50 degrees throw down a preemergent. Start milo in May and follow that program. Then comes the fall Milo and something else? What say you. Just an average Joe girl wanting to take it on herself. Thanks.
Hey Valerie! Thank you for watching and the comment! It'd say you're pretty good! Don't forget the preemergent again in the fall. That's one thing that most people sleep on. But yeah absolutely, I'll make a video more tailored to smaller yards.
Honestly, The Andersons has a lawn program that I think you'd really enjoy. It's a full year program with a guide on when to put everything down.
Here's a link if you're interested: bit.ly/3TD7yZZ
Mow high? Even on Bermuda? I'd be specific with this advice... I agree about the reel mower, but they don't necessarily apply to a grass that likes to be tall, like tall fescue.
For reference Bermuda likes to be between .5 and 2 inches.
Thank you for the comment! And you're 100% right. BUT each grass type has a range that they should be cut in. When I say mow high I mean within each one of those zones. So for Bermuda for example my recommendation would always be to cut at 2" unless you're doing an overseed or dethatching regiment.
Great video! Can only the HumicAG be used instead both the Humic and Biochar for lawns?
Thanks for the comment! Yeah for sure. The humic is like conditioner while the biochar is like a super healthy sponge. So they’re both beautiful and don’t requirethe other.
Hey new subbs and great content I also follow Ryan knorr, lawn care nut, turf mechanics with Brian. And your content is along those line so I'm in! Good luck with the new chapter of life bro. I have two kids and t's takes alot to spread time with family and the lawn. I'm in Canada by the way.
Thanks Brian!! He’s here now! Sleep is at an absolute premium night now. Good luck this year! Hope y’all have thawed out now
Ok you said chuck the Scott’s spreader but the cheap option you link in the description is a Scott’s spreader. I’m confused? By the love your channel Ty
It is super cheap for those that want it, but just know it may give you some problems. Sadly there aren't good cheap alternatives.
thoughts on tilling lawn, to 'restart' a lawn?
You mean like in place of chemicals?
Hey brother! Just saw your channel for the first time today. Did I hear you were in Nashville???? Me too, Born and raised!!!! Loved the material, and complyagrre with mowing high. The only problem is that I cannot find a non-commercial push mower that mows higher than 4” . . . any recommendations??? I’d like to keep my fescue at 4 1/2” but curious to know your thoughts on if that height would just increase my chances of fungus????
Hey Mike!! Heck yeah man! We’re in a weird transitional zone aren’t we? Haha. Yeah so I basically always max out my height but you nailed the one potential issue with that. I put down prophesy by the Andersons (a broad spectrum fungicide) around now to combat that! But yeah that’s always the issue w/ cutting that high.
@@TheLawnReview VERY familiar with Andersons as I typically use their PGF Complete for Fert. Question: how often do you use the fungicide? I’m transitioning from Bermuda to Fescue so, my apologies for all the questions. By the way, CONGRATULATIONS ON THE NEW ADDITION!!! He’s gonna be a stud! LOL
The brown could also be grub damage.
True - I talk about that later in the video
Don’t good soil microbes react negatively to fungicides and some herbicides? For the past several years I have used herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides plus poured nutrients to the soil as recommended. Neighbors on 3 sides of me apply a little fertilizer and nothing else and don’t have the issues I have had. 🤷🏻♂️. This year I have backed off somewhat and going more of an organic route using the Earthworks program. I am interested to see how this works the next couple years.
There's another organic program called Lawnbox that is pretty nice. But yes if you get harsh chemicals then your lawn may not react the way you want it.
Soil matters. Put down c20 and Earthright soil conditioner every year.
I'll check it out, thanks
What about humichar? Do you recommend that?
Yezzir!! Humichar DG is good.
I have mowed high so far this year and there are spots that are long and spots that aren't long enough to be cut. The lawn then looks uneven because of this. Yesterday I mowed lower (2 inches instead of 3.5) and it looks much more even. Now I don't know what to do 😔
Hey Stealth! Thanks for the comment! What mower are you using?
@@TheLawnReview toro timemaster
@@stealthcomp14 Nice. love that mower
Do the handheld spreaders from Scotts have the same design flaw? If yes, any recs for a handheld spreader that doesn't?
Hey Axel! No you’re good there - No wheels so no blockage! That’s a fine spreader.
@@TheLawnReview Thanks, and thanks for a great channel!

When you asked Siri to remind you to check for army worms, the video stopped playing on my iPad and Siri asked me for clarification on my reminder.
LOL! Whoops. Well hopefully you had her go ahead and add it!
Great vid. Congrats on the baby! Advice- take mental snapshots often, make playing with them a priority, not a “when you have time” thing. Treasure the moments and laugh at the frustrating ones (it helps to remember you’ll be laughing at them in days or weeks anyway). My kid just turned 5 and everyone says it goes fast, but it almost seems unfair how fast it actually went. I’m kicking myself for how often she wanted me to play after work and I chose to work on some project. Watch Bluey for pro dad tips (but don’t kick yourself for not being that good). 😂 All the best.
Thank you! That means a lot. It's been a lot to take in and I know it will go fast.
I want to resode my lawn with Zoysia since neighbors week are slowly creeping onto my lawn, but why the hell should I spend thousands when it's just going to happen again since neighbors lawn is complete shit.
You could apply a preemergent after you put in the zoysia to prevent that. Also you could use a selective post emergent to kill whatever weeds continue to creep in! But to some degree you’re right, we’re fighting an uphill battle. But such is life sometimes.. I’d be glad to provide some recommendations if you’d like
Question about lawn height and growing zoysia in south Texas. I heard from a couple of sources that you should cut it short. What are your thoughts?
Hey Cake! Thanks for the comment! Each grass has its own unique height ranges but I still think you should cut on the high end of those ranges if that makes sense.
I’ve read that if you cut it short, it will spread faster. I cut mine high. I like the look.
Cut it short. If the zoysia resembles the leaf blade of zoysia then a middle height 2-3" might look better. Otherwise cut it at 1" - 2x week in the spring and early summer. Itll really improve root development and train the grass to not spend energy going upwards.
It does not make sense. Stop trying to tell people to grow grass the way you do in a different region and with different types of grass. I mow Tifway 419 at .5". Why, because that is when it is at its best.
@@nmsauditor1a950 of course it does. I'm not far from btw from this persons location and have a similar climate. . It also makes sense to cut at least 2x a week. Not every can which is why the latter height was suggested so it doesn't cut off too much and cause it to look brown. Maybe you should presume the person offering some experiences to a comment live in the same location.
Where can I get one of those sick TLR hats?
Bro. We can send you one.
I can't find your fungicide and grub info you referred to on your website. Can you please post the link? Thank you!
@@TheLawnReview my bad. I meant the guide that you mentioned about when to throw it down and whatnot.
Shoot me an email and I'll send it to you. tyler@thelawnreview.com . Where are you located so I can give you the right schedule.
Our neighbors chicken come over and tear up our basic lawn. If I use insecticide do you think the chickens will want to go somewhere else?
I definitely think it’s worth a shot! But there’s also “pet safe” pet repellant you can use as well that you can scoop on Amazon!
What kind of grass do you have
Tall Fescue! What about you?
I made that ‘seed by the big box ‘ mistake and wished i had bought pure seeds. I now got some from CGI and loving the results!
Heck yeah! What kind of seed?
I mow my RPR at 1/2" , it still gets plenty of sun
What kind of grass?
@@TheLawnReview perennial rye
@The Lawn Review the length of cut has no bearing on better or worse photosynthesis, confirmed by science lol
@@fabrones49 I like my personal anecdotes more than science
@The Lawn Review all good. Keep the videos comming, there real good! 👍
I'm fairly skeptical about the "0% crop/weed seed" claim, if you look close at the spec sheet they only actually claim 98% purity. If I had to guess, they may have used a less sensitive testing method. That last 2% is Unknown and could include small amounts of crop seed too low to be detected in their testing.
For context: I'm a scientist who develops pharmaceutical drug tests. No testing method is infinitely sensitive. A "negative" test result doesn't mean there is actually ZERO drug substance in the sample, just that the amount is less than what the testing can pickup.
Good to know! Thanks for the scientific insights.
You got fescue grass??? It expose to be cut high..
Yes! Gotta keep it up high!
Low, low, low! How low can you mow. This does not apply to warm season grass. Your yard looks good but does not apply to those with warm season grass.
Thank you - yes, this is advice for cool season grass, mostly.
Close by, would hire you to improve yard. LET ME know.

@@TheLawnReview - don’t think so but is probably sponsored by them
can one ever be fine and ok with weeds? id rather not use chems on the lawn, and would rather have something like clover, grass has no ecological benefit, right?
Hey Schuy! Thanks for the comment! Lawn Box is an organic lawn product owned by The Andersons. They even have an organic preeemergent coming soon. But I hear ya! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and lawn! But yes grass definitely still has ecological benefit in its own right! Just not great for pollinators like clover is.
A spreader for $360? That's outrageous. BTW, your "Cheap Spreader" cost 50% more than your "Average Spreader". Are you referring to quality and not price?
The Yard Star is definitely more expensive but it has made a huge difference in my lawn. You can probably find others like it for cheaper.
Which one are you referring to as cheap and average? The Scotts one has obvious design flaws.
@@TheLawnReview Your links above:
"Average" spreader (Agri-Fab) = $99
"Cheap" spreader (Scotts Elite) = $139.
I was wondering if you were referring to quality, not price. I ask because I have the Scotts Mini and it does exactly as you said. I was getting ready to buy the Scott's Elite version that you have listed as the "cheap" one. If it's poor quality like the Scotts Mini then I don't want to waste time and money with it either.
BTW, I appreciate the reply back and appreciate the content that you're putting out. I especially liked this "tips" video. Hope your channel continues to grow.
