Also be super careful with glyphosate if you’re spraying part of your lawn you want killed but is next to maybe something you don’t want killed. Wind will carry it. And also be careful walking across the part you don’t wanted killed with boots covered in glyphosate. I learned the hard way on both scenarios
I did my reno last fall (2022) with full KBG and it came out great when it made it through the winter i started on October 1 here in Tennessee and being in the transition zone helped cause our temps stay warm longer for it to get established now we are in summer and the KBG is still doing great despite the summer heat the fertilizer program ive used my irrigation system has helped a ton.
Ryan, great tips. Wonder if you'd show the soaking seed process to help speed up germination. 5gal. Buckets and I think a paint strainer bag... So, video that shares the tips, tools process. If, it's a good idea in the fall - plus\minus in doing it. Thanks as always in sharing!
Portland, Oregon complete lawn renovation starting today with spraying glyphosate on my entire lawn. I received your (2) 25lbs of Elite Perennial Ryegrass yesterday.
Don't forget you may have to core-aerate if you have compacted soil (common coming out of the oven of summer). For a full reno, between dethatching and seeding I core-aerate, pick up the plugs for my bin, then top-dress with a compost/soil blend, do some minor leveling, *then* drop the seed, then roll, then top with peat moss and/or another layer of compost, then Scotts Triple Action for Seeding (has mesotrione; i.e. Tenacity) then roll again, and commence the scheduled watering. I did this with Ryan's Elite PRG (I live in PNW) last fall and was absolutely shocked at the results.
Just nuck'd an area of 3500sf in the backyard. I'm in NE ohio... looking to seed 1st week in August. TTTF/KBG mix. I'll pre-germinate the KBG for 10 days. So it'll pop close to when the TTTF pops
yup, I'm getting ready to start too ....one of the biggest things I'm focusing on right now is to try and get everything else done to areas I won't be renovating this fall, as before I've notice that I will be attempting to do too much all at once and 'spread myself too thin'; not giving all my attention to the important jobs, cause I've got a bunch of smaller stuff I didn't keep up on enough and then have to do those things as well - like tree and bush trimming and getting other good lawns in their best shape to come out of summer ready for a cooler growing season before it comes, it might be to soon or seem that way, but anything I can do now to get me 'ahead of the game' helps a lot when its time to get serious

Great videos! It’s late summer in New England, I want to overseed in September, when can I dethatch and airate? (I have about 15,000 sq ft and use pull behind tools). I don’t have a sprinkler system, so I have some dormant grass and don’t want to pull it up being too aggressive
Question for whoever wants to answer. I plan on doing some leveling and overseeding end of august. My lawn has been taken over by what looks like quack grass. Is it possible to rid of them without doing a full Reno?
Hello all, i’m new to this as I just purchased this home. I dont want to completely kill this lawn but there are definitely weed issues. How/when should I try to get that under control for a fall perennial rye seeding? Im in PA. Thanks!
You can apply a blanket weed control now if you have had plenty of rain and grass is actively growing it will work quicker. Also apply a fertilizer and put down about 3/4lb of N/1000. Mow at 3 1/2 inches minimum height when finished mowing.
I started first week of july because it was the only week not showing rain and only week I had off from work.....just applied my second coat of glyphosate on missed spots ......the yellow n brown lawn is driving my wife nuts hahaha shes begging me to seed now lol
I watched your other video and this one. I am very tempted to do this on my lawn. The only concern is that we are on a water restriction and supposed to only water every other day. Will I be able to get new seed to germinate if it only got watered every other day?
Hey Ryan - I’m in the Iowa City area. I really want to overseed this year (I usually don’t), but need to get rid of weeds (clover and creeping Charlie) first. It’s been really dry here. Can I spray weeds now? Or does grass need to be less stressed?
Excellent content as usual. I live in North Carolina so we get a good mix of heat and cool weather. I am completely spraying out all my existing grass as it is a mess. What would you recommend for a new lawn in a transition zone? We do not want Bermuda. Considering between Turf Type Tall Fescue, KBG and Per-annual Ryegrass
How do you fight incoming poa triv? When I renovate early, the heat and humidity along with the consistently damp soil promotes poa triv. Always a big issue for me the next spring/ summer
Great tips. I watched a ton of your reno videos last summer as I headed into my Reno. I did a full kbg front yard Reno (TTTF still in back and leaving it) and also started early. I think I put down too much seed though. Super thick but maybe too thick lol. I’ll dethcatch and aerate it this fall and let it be. Super nice. Can’t wait for the true kbg color to come out after the first year of maturity.
I am in Michigan and just recently got 30 yards of top soil put on top of fill dirt. I have grated the top soil and leveled the best I can. I am thinking P rye is what I want to go with, does anyone have suggestions?

Ryan--as always, a great video and one that gets me ready to reno! I am wondering if you could talk on no-maw grass renovations. Noticed you were lifting your sprayer to mix. Little tip: you can rock it back and forth while leaving it on the ground instead. With this method, you can effectively mix things you can't lift like that, like a 5 gallon bucket of paint, for example.
My lawn currently is a mix of every grass known to man haha! I am in northern Illinois and I want to use perennial rye grass to over seed. My question is if I keep using it year after year will it eventually take over my lawn and be mostly PR grass?
@@ryanknorrlawncare thank you so much for the reply I really appreciate it! One other question I am in northern IL. And looking to overseed this fall and then level my lawn come spring time! Hey Ryan question for you. My beautiful elite fescue is getting taken over by crab grass. It’s super hot here in Va about 93 everyday and humid. I’ve read that it’s really bad to put down a weed and feed over 80 degrees. Would you combat the crab grass now or just wait it out until fall comes around with better temperatures
