Watching preach go through a tutorial is very nostalgic to me. It reminds me of when I showed my dad how to play mario in 1994. Now all we need is him moving the controller in the direction he's trying to jump to in-game, for 100% nostalgia overload.

To understand the disdain for 15, you really need to understand the history of the game. See, the original concept for 15 wasn't actually as 15 at all. It was as Final Fantasy Versus XIII. A game announced in 2006 as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis- a series of games with no direct story connections, but a shared mythos. It was to be the brainchild of Tetsuya Nomura, the man behind Kingdom Hearts and FFVIIR. A man often memed on- partially for good reason, but partially unfairly- but it's clear he had a vision for Versus XIII that he loved and was passionate about. In fact, more than just Nomura, it was to be made by the same development team as Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2... We got a few glimpses of things and a trailer or two over the years. It looked really exciting and people were incredibly hyped for it. What little we knew of it, it was going to be an action game like Kingdom Hearts (which for many at the time was high praise) in a darker world. It was very exciting.
Unfortunately, PS3 era Square Enix happened. People were pulled away from teams both for the initial 1.0 launch of FFXIV, and then to the team working on ARR. Nomura wasn't able to work on Versus XIII because his team had been pulled into the FFXIV effort. He got a new team to make some Kingdom Hearts games (a fact which has long been a sour spot for the Kingdom Hearts community, as the Osaka team as they're called have long been deemed inferior to the Tokyo team that made KH1 and 2... But I digress), but Versus XIII got nothing... Eventually, SE decides to rebrand Versus XIII as XV. They took the project away from Nomura so that he could make Kingdom Hearts 3 (something which clearly upset him) and gave it to a man called Tabata. At E3 2013 we saw the first glimpse of "Versus XIII" in years, but at the end the logo changed to XV. Excitement was still high.
However, in the end... While some characters and concepts were retained from what we saw of Versus XIII, it was easy to tell that the game, and especially the story was fundamentally not the same as it was supposed to be for Versus XIII. Many things that people were excitedly speculating on simply weren't there. That already left a bad taste in people's mouths. But things were made even worse by the fact that the game released incredibly incomplete. I assume the version you're playing is the Royal Edition, which is the "complete"/definitive edition of the game which was released after a bunch of DLCs were made which actually made the story complete.
But then we get into the gameplay... Remember, Versus XIII was supposed to an action game made by a team that had proven it could make a great action game. So when people loaded up XV and saw that you can do every weapon "combo" by simply holding the attack button, and worse, dodge everything passively by simply holding the dodge button... It didn't end well. Worse, the way potions worked made it so even if you did get hit, you'd survive anything as long as you had enough potions. Not to mention the magic in the game just all being grenades that friendly fire. The accessory which turned friendly fire off didn't exist at release, so magic was simply a no go... All of this just made the gameplay in XV not interesting. The breaking point for me was when I went into an optional dungeon I clearly had no business being in based on levels. I basically no skill potion walked my way through the dungeon and completed it. At that point I turned the game off and never looked back.
I never played the Royal Edition, so I don't know how much it fixed any gameplay issues I described, if at all. If it did, I would certainly understand why Mike's having a good time with the game. At some point I'll probably go back and try it if only to make an effort to have finished every mainline FF game. But for now... the bad taste XV left in my mouth remains

I wish I liked this game more than I do. The combat is fine, but after a few dozen hours I just completely fell out of it, never made it past chapter 4 iirc. One day I intend to go back and finish it, but its been over 5 years now and I still haven't, so it's clearly not a priority. At the end of the day though, I do have far more respect for this game than XIII, because I have tried to finish XIII far more times over a far longer period of time, and not once have I ever felt engaged in that plot, meanwhile XV does engage me, not much, but I am fairly more interested in it, although a lot of that comes down to Ardyn, I love him and his backstory really gets to me.

I'm so glad that Mike is not playing the Release version of this game. Still hated how incomplete it was (especially chapter 13).
The multimedia marketing approach didn't help it either (so we only get to see Ultros and Diamond Weapon in the Kingsglaive movie?). I also hated how much screentime Lunafreya had in the movie conpared to the actual game.
To add insult to injury, I've read the synopsis of what they wanted to do with the story later on and just, wow. The Dawn of the Future is really something else.

The Villain in this game is one of the best written in Final Fantasy outside of FFXIV.
Just a shame barely any of it is shown in game or outside of DLC.
That was one of peoples biggest gripes about this game and its writing, plus the fact they gave up on it before finishing its story (they were releasing the rest as DLC).
Sure the characters are difficult to connect with, but its honestly the villain who carry's the entire game. (Especially after playing his DLC and learning his history and just whats going on)
I mocked the hell out of this game when i first heard about it, turned out to be the first non MMO FF i fully enjoyed since VII XD (Caught and sold all the fish lol. I rate it 3 out of 3 fish sold first go.)
Is the side game Kingsguard still running? I soloed my way through despite it being multiplayer content and it added a decent amount of required story and context as well. If it is, wouldn't start it till much later in the story to avoid spoilers. I think your viewers can give you a yell when its a good time to play and on Steam i think it was bundled with the base game as is the DLC.
After that point in the middle you mentioned you know about, its a good time to take a side trip into the villains DLC, should only take up about a single stream to play through then continue on with the main game. The experience will be better for it.
Annoyingly the DLC all take place at various points during the main story but you are unlikely to touch them until after playing through.
Without spoiling, Episode Gladio takes place when he leaves the party for a short while.
Episode Ignus takes place at the same point i mentioned to play The Villains DLC and is good to play after it.
Episode Prompto takes place near the end when he leaves the party for a short while.
All of these i recommend halting the main game story for and playing before continuing on from each point.
They really should of just been included at those points in time as part of the main game but well, guess SE wanted to milk some extra $$$$ in the form of deliberately left out content.
I will always be pissed that they never released the final DLC that had the full ending, I hear they released it as a book instead, But who buys tacked on book content that should of been part of the game? XD

Only thing is that more recently he's been alternating between classic games and modern games (he did 1, then 12, then 3, and now 15). The pitch meeting for this game.
You know how in earlier FFs we built castles, charming towns, enchanted forests and caverns. Wrote relatively engaging narratives with appropriate soundtracks for every situation as well as coded brainy tactical gameplay.
Screw that, you're now the lamest emo kid in school. When you're not driving around in a car listening to old FF music (because Nobuo Uematsu had long since ditched us at this point), you run around in a desert because someone at a gas station told you to go pick up some car paint coating.
    GREAT IDEA
This game is the point you knew modern square enix were morons. It's extremely difficult to come up with a lamer premise than this game. FF14 and FF16 comes close. But at least this game has a sense of humor.

@@csrjjsmp The only way to see it in a favorably light is to think of it as a game of solitaire. You boot the game up, make sure your car has a nice sticker on it, you put on some old FF music. Shut your brain off and follow the quest marker.
But why would you ever want to do that. When you could do any other activity with the FF music or any music playing in the background. There's a serious case to be made that some of the mini games in older FFs are preferable to this entire game. Triple triad, tetra master, blitzball. Set a goal for yourself, collect every card, build the ultimate blitzball team.
About as much of a waste of time as performing errands for someone living in a trailer in this game. But I suppose you could apply the same logic to mmos. And people love those. Could be that it's, "so bad it's good". A meme game. Good for streaming but otherwise awful, unless you're mentally unstable. Like the super washer game or whatever it was called, people that like to hose things down inside of a video game. Drooling in front of their monitors haha

    • @ALeafOnTheWind42
      @ALeafOnTheWind42 5 місяців тому +2

I don't like 15, but you're being pretty disingenuous here when talking about the concept. FF hasn't been about castles or "enchanted forests" since at best 9, and even that was as a love letter to the end of that era that had long since passed.

    • @DanIel-fl1vc
      @DanIel-fl1vc 5 місяців тому

@@ALeafOnTheWind42 10 and 12 also had that. But you're right, for the last 18 years Final Fantasy has played like single player mmos. Pick up a quest from an awfully cheery NPC, run after a quest marker.
The mini game in FF9 where you hunt for treasures by looking at a picture and try make out where on the world map it is. Functions exactly like a mmo fetch quest, but you have to spot where the quest marker is and the quest is acquired by digging in forests and lagoons.
Perfect example how a mini game in the old FF games plays better than the entirety of modern FF games. Talk to NPC, follow quest marker is too much hand holding. Derived from bethesda games and witcher 3 which in turn probably got it from mmos. Or they evolved along side each other, either way it's a massive waste of time and makes modern FF unplayable. (FF14, FF15, FF16) and I bet FF7 rebirth from the looks of it.

Regardless, I'm sorry they're not your thing, but while they may be a waste of time to you, that doesn't mean they're inherently a waste of time. There's value to be had in them for some people. 14, for example, has one of the best stories in any video game ever. And while I really don't care much for 15 myself, some people can clearly find enjoyment out of it. It's fine to express your opinion, but honestly, you just sound bitter and want people to join in your misery
