I'm a mother of two beautiful little girls and when me and their dad separated it hurt them. They were 7 and 1 at the time. But they both were very aware of things changing and were confused and didn't understand. Dealing with the fall out (the children fluctuating between emotions, grades slipping, acting out, and other thing that can occur from a drastic change) hurts you as a parent because you want to shield them from the pain of it. And if you don't have the strength, knowledge and resources to support your family through the change it can be very devastating. Me and my oldest daughter attend family therapy 2x a month and I'm glad we embarked on that journey.
