Hallo! Woodworker here. If you're feeling unsatisfied with how realistic your false wood looks, here's some ideas. Your false wood is very brown! When you look at wood that is typically used in construction, notice how many different colours are in it. Most have hues of yellow and orange, and some are even pinkish. Often wood is very similar in colour to skin tones, actually! Also, think about adding more defects to false wood. Knots are always a beautiful detail, but if you're really trying to go with an old and somewhat run-down look, think about how wood changes over time. The ends of the wood may develop "checking" (splitting on the edge) and may cup, bow and twist along the plank. Another thing to maybe consider is making your detail a bit finer? When you make false wood, the grain patterns are often large, and while beautiful, this can lead to a bit of a dissonance where it's bark-looking wood used in a scenario in which all bark would have been removed. And variate more! Your drybrushing added a lovely sense of depth and shadow, but maybe experiment with different colours of drybrushing in patches all over the piece to bring in some fun variance!
Awesome advice! I would also like to add that it would be cute to do the wainscoting in the stone detail like behind the stove. Since you have the wood beams above, the stone would be a nice juxtaposition and would actually play into the old cottage theme as that would commonly be the foundation of the building! The "stone" is easily created with cardboard and joint compound even and your "grout" can be the dark background you already have painted there because it matches what you used on the other stone.
I love how your husband just rolls with all the whimsy you desire, he's like "where do you want this tree branch Beybee" it's so heartwarming I love it!
Hot tip for everyone not able to craft branches: dead branches don't rot indoors. I've had my big assembled Halloween tree for over two years now, you can go out in autumn and find plenty
Hahahahhaaaaaaa!!! I was thinking the same thing, like, does Rachel have a shortage of branches/trees in her area? Poor Rachel and her branch deficiency.
If there's a architectural salvage store in your area that's a great place to find cheap materials. It would probably be easier to use real wood trim or planks than to make it out of foam
I second this. And not to mention, real wood always looks better than fake. I feel like for her branch she could have just found one around her property somewhere lol!
Honestly bolsa wood over Styrofoam than putty to make grain patterns and knots in wood would have worked a lot better. You don't need to use that much putty but the bolsa will absorb water so going slow is best
@@TashJansson tbf she's using styrofoam from packages not buying new specifically for this. I'd rather it be used for whimsical aesthetics than in a landfil. Wabe-sabi is a great channel if you want to see super sustainable renos tho
Rachel! I love the *whimsy*!! For in-between the larger gaps in the grout I'd put a bit of dried _moss_ :D I am _weak_ for a good, mossy grout and I think it would tie in the branch foliage even more and give it even more of a long, over-run cottage in the forest 😄 Either way, it looks amazing and sooo cozy!
Rachel (while dressed and standing in a room that looks straight out of the Potatoes and Molasses scene in OTGW): this is not whimsical enough for me. I require more whimsy.

Overall your space in the barn is looking great, very cottage surrounded by nature.
I’m sure someone else suggested this, but in the event they haven’t: You could do with a hot knife to cut foam! Like you, I LOATHE the mess made when cutting foam, as well as the sloppy edges. Finally I said NO MORE! I bought one of the better hot knives from Amazon, and absolutely LOVE IT - it has a heat control dial and a light indicating it’s on. This thing heats up fast - and equally important, cools off quickly. I’m careful with mine and turn it off immediately after each cut so as to extend its life. The tool is also brilliant at sealing the ends of ribbon so they don’t unravel, and slicing through artificial fiber fabric. Every hard-core crafter needs this tool. ❤
Not sure if anyone else has suggested this, but my parents just added a roof to their deck and wanted a similarly whimsical feel for the wooden underside, so they used salvage wood they bought from someone that was tearing down an old building! Maybe something like that would do the trick for the barn as well? ☺️ wonderful video, as always!

We've been fans for a while, but this video made us smile so much, we just had to leave a comment! One of the best things about being an artist is making your own corner of the universe interesting and beautiful! We love your Tudor timbers and think the faux materials actually add a magical quality to the finished product, which we're not sure would have been the case if it were too convincing.
Witnessing all of Rachel's magnificent whimsical projects just makes me think back to her beautiful bedroom mural and how heartbreaking it would be if the new owners painted over it 🥺
In regards to the false beams, you may be able to split wood using the wedge method to give it that rougher look that you're wanting. You'd want a wood that is relatively straight grain and even better, prone to splitting, for example, cedar is very easy to split. I think pine would also work well, but you'd want to avoid splitting where there are knots. Before precision machining was as accessible as it is today, wood was cut to rough size by hammering in wedges along the grain line, start at one end and when it starts to split, add another, and keep going down. It will remain relatively straight, while also looking beautifully lumpy. It would look like how wood split from an axe looks! I haven't had the chance to experiment with this, but in rural areas where I live this is the go to method to building fences for around the property. It's seems relatively quick and easy as long as you have the correct tools. Also keep an eye out online for people selling or giving away old wood, you can often get it real cheap
A tip to add a little more "au naturale~" to the fake foliage is to take a de-saturated yellow green paint mixed with white glue so it'll adhere. Then doing drybrush and wash until desired look is achieved. For additional depth do a different coat in a different green tone. Can also be done for autumn leaves just with red, orange, yellow. You can splatter spots on if you want that detailing. I love the bubble wrap creativity. Reminds me of when I made dragon horns out of aluminum foil, masking tape and paint-glue mix.
The fact that you've painted your wall three times bcs of wut normal ppl would say is pretty much the same shade of colour, scratches the itch that my perfectionist soul has been tryna reach for whole ass 23 years of its life
I'm not so sure. Fri goes well and then by Sat night her video pops up ( ok not every week) and I watch thinking why am I still subscribed to this channel?
Whenever I paint, I get samples of different shades of the color I like. I paint each wall in the room with the 3-5 paint samples I’ve bought (very small paint samples are available from the big box stores). Then I can see how each color looks in the room on different walls, at different times of the day, as the sun changes directions. It’s a great way to know exactly what you want!
Rachel I mean this with no hate, but your house is turning into one that will make the next owners go “what the HELL did they do here” 😂 This was super fun to watch - thank you!
She did mention earlier in a previous video that she intents for this to be her "forever home", so the next owners probably won't arrive in a reaaaaally long time
I was thinking the same! And my boyfriend would not allow me to do this because then I would not be easy to sell... Oh and I love the dress Rachel wears in the Wrap and bloops, did she make it herself of but it, anybody knows?
@@celestiastra13 I would love to be the next person to acquire this house. You're right, no one else is getting this house for a good long while. If you're a prospective byer coming into look at this home, though, you'd have to feel like every room of the house is done with a lot of heart and love, and of course whimsy. I think it would add to the value of the home immensely.
Rachel!! I am currently in new homeowner hell and watching you do house stuff is so inspiring and reassuring. Pleaseeee do more house/DIY stuff if you feel inspired to!
I feel for you. I paid a man to install a new boiler only to forget to lubricate the motor. This required another man to put in a new motor. So it’s fine now. Everything’s fine.
I enjoy a man with good tools. and every job has to be measured by how many trips to the hardware store. My husband has spent a few hours painting vintage nails, for me to use in my felted "tap dancing" sheep. I mean it's just a fun and easier way to make sheep legs, but the bonus is that can tap dance if you move them around a tad. He just asked so nicely if I would need more painted, with the holidays coming (I donate all my felted items to the Historic Society in Keene NH and they have the most darling little store that helps support their fabulous programs. People are kind enough to donate the curly locks for the sheep also. But without the help of "Tool Boy" none of this would be possible.
Have you considered using wood from wooden pallets for your beams? It’s more rustic for sure. Or find an old fence with rough looking wood on marketplace.
Sanding and re-staining isn't the only way to change the color of stained wood! You can avoid the flat look of just painting over wood by buying stain that is made to go directly over existing stain! The stuff is practically magic, and in this case would preserve some of the color dimension/texture from the wood. All you do is suuuuuuper lightly rough up the finish of the existing stain, just enough so the finish isn't perfectly smooth, and apply the new color. Would've been the perfect thing for this project as Rachel was making the wood darker. Great results, and barely any sanding required.
I glanced down for a second and looked up right at the rock wall grout reveal. When I looked up, exclaimed out loud "Wow!!!" That turned out awesome!" 🤯 I love how the branch turned out too! We have fun here... except maybe Nick, lol! What a great guy. ☺️
Love how the barn is turning out, though I will admit that since I am also undergoing some home renos at the moment, I was desperately pleading with miss Rachel to not paint over the wainscoting because while the immediate satisfaction is tempting I just KNEW she would be unsatisfied with how dull and flat it ended up looking. It takes so much more work, but NOTHING beats a good sanding, staining, and layer of polyurethane
Glad to see you back, beautiful lady! Do you ever check Facebook Marketplace or reclamation sites for project supplies? People are doing a lot more deconstruction of rooms, whole houses, buildings, old sheds, and barns. You might have some luck finding aged lumber to continue your work. You're always very resourceful with your projects. I'm sure you'll get it all figured out. Hope you have a wonderful weekend together!!! 💗💗💗
I love your videos, especially cosplays, but when you start doing something with your home usually I'm dying inside. Like, your "vision" is good but then you make it from shit material like foam or those "wallpaper rocks" etc. which I bet will get mold in few years (especially in an old barn...or a toilet in one of your previous video). I wish you could take much more time for planning and getting good-and-enough-of materials for renovations, it's your "forever home' after all so I guess it would be fitting to make things once and for all. Instead of making artificial plant you could buy an ivy or similar plant that will climb on this wall. I wish you a lot of strenght and time for your next projects! :>
Thank you i was looking for this comment, youtubers need to stop making comments about what they think on consumerism and environmental issues. Considering the number of art supplies being used which is not being very environmentally friendly. Be my guest do what you want but dont think its going to last for years and dont act like most your projects are environmentally friendly. I agree with you its like the vision and process have become too rushed.
When I saw you about to use a tool to put on the "grout", my brain said "NO!! Pastry bag!" As in get a quart zip bag, put the glop in, don't seal, cut a TINY bit off one corner then apply like caulk and smush with finger ;-))
Okay, while watching Rachel try making faux branches, my fuzzy little brain thinks: "Rachel lives on a farm. There must be real trees on the farm. Why not just gather some real branches???" Guess that's what I would do, but then, I'm not clever at making stuff like Rachel is. 😕 I love how the barn looked when it was finished, though! ~Janet in Canada
Yes, had tje same thought! Save half a days work and deadline stress by taking a walk... But, then again, I liked the warmer original paint and would have definately used a roller to paint the walls - so my taste is allready in question😂
I have to be honest, after the spider cookies, I watched as much Christine McConnell as there is on UA-cam (which is not much) and even though it is enchanting and she definitely IS a goddess...I don't feel comfy over there. I feel at home here, with the Hobbits and the Floor Trolls and where our very own goddess doesn't have much of a plan and is authentic and human and relatable and unprofessional in the best sense of the word because being unprofessional breeds its very own kind of creativity. It's so cozy here. I was a minute into this here video when I realised I feel like a dog who has run away for a bit and is now SO glad to be home again.
Possibly a hundred years from now, some one will buy your barn and spend the rest of their lives trying to figure out what archeological period it belongs, but for now it looks great. Loved watching you transform the old to the faux older.
I love seeing how you repaint things and admit mistakes. Makes me feel confident when I'm crafting and decorating as I do the same, figure it out first, read instructions later
I love how the fake stone wall turned out, and i hope it holds up to the heat of the oven. However, i can’t help but obsess over the beam situation, namely, the way that i think they don’t really work structurally. It just takes me out of the fantasy, seeing it as it is now. I think there should be a long horizontal beam “supporting” the ceiling beams. This beam should then be propped up by the vertical and diagonal beams. Anyway, looking forward to the next instalment 👍👍
I have to say I think you’re so creative. It never would have occurred to me to use bubble wrap and tape to make a tree branch decoration; that would have never crossed my mind in a million years. It worked out wonderfully and it looks fantastic!
Has it been two weeks already! That's flown by! As a fellow Taurus, yes, the surrounding aesthetic must be a pocket realm of visual delight and trinkets 💛🌙🌟✨
I am busy with the basement into a useable space and your whimsical (foam) beams finally gave me the right idea to decorate without making the room too dark! So thank you :D
love these home improvement videos. so different and fun. they seem like a ton of work, but still fascinating to watch because they are so different and full of imagination. because of her inspiration and motivation I can hardly wait to have my own house one day and do fun things with it.
Fun project. Definitely stain the wainscoting and I'd throw some on the beams as well. Different shades of stain in different areas will add some depth (gel stains may be helpful here). Also distressing your wood beams would help a lot to age them up. You might be able to use a dremel to carve some dips on the sides, ice pick will add some faux worm holes, etc. Love the charm you added.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR HOME RENO VIDEOS. I won't say they are my favorite content, because I literally love all your content, but something about home reno is just so satisfying. And this looks absolutely STUNNING! Love love love 😍😍
Darn stinking cute! Love it. Way to recycle and reuse stuff. Can't wait to see all the other bits of your studio transformed into a Rachel wonderland.😍
"Make it look intentional" really is the biggest secret all craftsmans keep. And you did a fantastic job of that! The stones really do look great, just enough to make the perfect little stone wall for your stove. The branch looks fab! The leaves are... not your fault. And the wainscoting would definitely look better sanded rather than painted, but it's a lot of work and I can understand leaving it as is for now. All in all: very cute! I hope you have fun making the rest of the barn just as whimsical.
My mum made fake beams in the late 90s! We were living in an old cottage with exposed beams on the ceiling, so she made ones to match on the walls. She moulded them out of tetrion filler, and painted them trompe l'oeil style!
I love your videos because as someone who is a perfectionist and puts off creating things due to the potential of hating it, I love your videos because they inspire me to get off my hiney and just ✨ c r e a t e something✨ also I adore you. ALSO, I was going to say I got a wood-burning kit and I will sometimes burn notches and lines in my wood to make it look more aged™️ and they aren’t always ~too~ expensive so that’s an idea
Came out super cute! Glad you said you might sand the wainscoting down and stain it bc my heart was weeping when you painted it. I thought it’s wood texture was so pretty. Your videos always give me lots of crafting energy so I’m going to knock on wood do something crafty when I make it home from work
My inspiration was running low working on my new house, this is exactly the style video I needed today! Thank you so much for always keeping me going with crafts 😊
Rachel, That was such a fun video! I have serious doubts you will actually read this, but if you wanted to add some more faux rocks to your VERY CUTE rock wall, you can use the first putty type stuff ( you know the one for "house wives" lol-what!!!) You just build it up in the shape and paint it. I have used just plain wall putty and tinted it. I have done this for several projects and it works quite well. Also, since you are one of the great folks that like to use up all the cool leftovers, old/used wood pallets are great for staying and looking just the right amount of "Wonky"! Thanks for bringing us all your wonderful, funny, artistic, sweet self 😊 This was so fun and feels like we are all in for good vibes, from your fun videos! Happy day to you, Audri
Some pointers: a) light scoring with the knife, done many times, will cleanly cut plastic, fiberboard, cardboard, etc.; 2) buy a foam hot wire knife set; iii) artist pallet knives. Buy thee some. You can often score some almost free at estate sales; d) there are tapes with a gauze-like texture that can be coated. See also "gaffer tape".
ok but if you added just a few more if the fake stones the same way you did the upper part around the bottom corners to blend the stone corner a little more into the surrounding walls it would be so cool. really love the progress your making!
Hey Rachel! You should try putting some old sweet potatoes/yams in jars of water, within weeks you'll have an ivy-like plant that's really easy to take care of :)

Let's talk about your editing. Stellar, by the way. Hubby and I laughed so hard at the bubble wrap dress clip. Actually, we were cracking up all the way through it. Good job!
If you get the pink foam, it doesn’t fuzz like styrofoam. You can pleat tissue paper and glue it down with watered down white glue in a “grain” like pattern. It really looks like wood, it’s lightweight and if you add wood glue to your paint, it is pretty durable. The foam planks can be carved easily and weathered before applying the tissue wood grain. Looks pretty passable as wood when you’re done.
I always forget that Rachel does not naturally have visible eyebrows and every time we get a glimpse of that I always think 'who is that poor, unmade up goth?' Top notch content as always

i just love how nick is fully on board with every project no matter how crazy it is
lookin Xtremely Snow White at the wishing well while hanging up the leaves - and the little wooden clogs at the end! Literally the best look and vibe
there's something about rachel's home reno projects that just alters my brain chemistry in the best possible way
I'm not so sure.
@@WinkyGirls I think she made it in her "sewing some hobbit clothes and answering questions" video from 2 years ago... But I might be wrong...
she could just undo it
Decorate your space like a queue line at Disneyland. YES! Life goals.
I am FULLY convinced that Rachel was a set designer in another universe😂
Our queen of making things that are not wood look like wood is back! ✨✨
Rachel: "it's frickin cold outside!"
Also rachel: wearing 3/4 pants with socks not all the way up
It’ll be ok ninjanerdfighter…we’ve all been there!
This comment is for the algorithm to know that I like this sort of content and want to see more of it.
Give Rachel more money!
When I find myself thinking about home decor, Rachel Maksy comes to me, speaking words of wisdom: "more whimsyyyy"
❤️😍
Have you considered using wood from wooden pallets for your beams? It’s more rustic for sure. Or find an old fence with rough looking wood on marketplace.
Yes, and lots of places to get free pallet wood !
When I looked up, exclaimed out loud "Wow!!!" That turned out awesome!" 🤯
I love how the branch turned out too!
As a former scenic artist I understand the desire to turn your house into a whimsical theatre set. Would love to help!
This is why I love you! 🥰 Why SHOULDN'T our spaces make us happy? Be creative! Be fun!
I loved seeing more of Nick in this one! Also your shed doors that open automatically are so cool I'm jealous 😱
I was thinking this, too!
Bugs in the wood, Takes time to treat the branches. Quite long time. Mold, if the branches are not well dried, which can take many months.
The whimsy in this is magical, and the prospect of it increasing is most wonderful! A fantastic and beautiful job, as always 🤩
I want to cry about the painted pine. That will never have woodgrain again. Unless Rachel is magic. Which is hope she is
This makes me want to build an abandoned fairytale cottage in the sims! I'm all for the *whimsy* ;)
Now I want to do it too lol
I love how the fake stone wall turned out, and i hope it holds up to the heat of the oven. However, i can’t help but obsess over the beam situation, namely, the way that i think they don’t really work structurally. It just takes me out of the fantasy, seeing it as it is now. I think there should be a long horizontal beam “supporting” the ceiling beams. This beam should then be propped up by the vertical and diagonal beams. Anyway, looking forward to the next instalment 👍👍
When you're gluing the leaves you look SO MUCH like Snow White at the beginning of the movie! I kinda expected the wooden clogs to appear hahaha
And at 30:24 looks like a young Katherine Hepburn
Thank you for nicely captioning your videos!!!! It makes such a difference
I love your decoration videos, they’re such good inspiration when I eventually have my own space
Your videos always give me lots of crafting energy so I’m going to knock on wood do something crafty when I make it home from work
Heck yeah! Love Fridays when Rachel posts! Glad to have you back, Rachel!
Beautiful result from one of the internets’ most beautiful people!
I loved how you chose the Waltz of the Flowers as the soundtrack for wrapping bubble wrap with masking tape. Pure class 👌
Whimsical interior decorating is my fucken JAM *_let's goooo_*
My inspiration was running low working on my new house, this is exactly the style video I needed today! Thank you so much for always keeping me going with crafts 😊
Rachel,
That was such a fun video!
Happy day to you,
Audri
I honestly am so impressed by Rachel’s dedication to reduce/reuse/recycle! 😮 girl you always blowing my mind
You could add a faux herb drying section above the stove to also help cover the lack of stone.
Hey Rachel! You should try putting some old sweet potatoes/yams in jars of water, within weeks you'll have an ivy-like plant that's really easy to take care of :)
I started watching you back when you quit your job and you were very nervous about you tube full time. I sort of left you tube due to many things, but I reviewed my list of people I sub to and there you were, I remembered how very much I loved your Chanel, so here I am, back. And as I remembered you didn’t disappoint, you are an amazing talent and your humor is perfect. and my I say still as beautiful as I remembered. Now I need to go back and catch up👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
Who knew Rachel could do such a great Skeksis impression!
I like the before and after.
Before reminds me of the schoolhouse in Over the garden wall.
New one looks like your plan obviously, very cottagey.
I love the home Reno content. It’s so much fun and inspires me to add more whimsy to my house too. ❤
OMG… you released the (whiskey) grandpa vibes! My grandad had some old 78s that he used to play to make me laugh and one of them was the Laughing Policeman! That was back in the day when record players came with 78rpm as well as 45 and 33 as standard…. Thank you for the happy memories 😊
I'm honestly surprised you didn't go for an autumnal tree branch with how much you love autumn! Year round autumn indoors!
Love it Rachel, reminds me of Belle's cottage or how I'd style it anyhow. There are some great comments below on styling wood or to get the look but do what you feel is your esthetic and be true to yourself, I love it anyway.xxx 😀 ❤️ 💖
Let's talk about your editing. Stellar, by the way. Hubby and I laughed so hard at the bubble wrap dress clip. Actually, we were cracking up all the way through it. Good job!
Go see the entire video of the bubble wrap dress! A true classic !
Wood burning wire slices right through it with no mass, for the Form.Beautiful well Done so much much Work ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I admire your perseverence. I would have gone and foraged a fallen branch, and nailed it onto my wall😂
I always forget that Rachel does not naturally have visible eyebrows and every time we get a glimpse of that I always think 'who is that poor, unmade up goth?'
Top notch content as always
Rachel describing herself as a tornado in October, then saying she's a Taurus... I've never felt so seen.
