Your genuine excitement for modern single player games makes me happy to see
Chain Echoes is quite amazing indeed. It's like a love letter to both Final Fantasy VI and Xenogears, and every bit as badass as implied.
Made by one person too
I played it for fifty five hours and I'm done but what an experience!
@@MrJosh066717 matthias linda right?
Chained Echoes is absolutely phenomenal. I'm happy to see that you've started playing it.
13 sentinels is the game that came out 2 years ago and 1 year ago on switch and I am telling you Johnny that you would love this game it is a visual novel mostly with some rts moments but the story is right up your alley
I will keep doing this until you play it
Plus one for this game being phenomenal. I rank the story up there with xenogears and xenosaga trilogy for being my favorite sci-fi in gaming
I have a bad feeling that it is going to be a hidden gem for switch and ps4
@@strwrbttlfrnt Unfortunately I think it will remain hidden unless Vanillaware releases a hugely popular game that forces people to go back and reassess 13 Sentinels.
@rockutron9000 same I don't think it is going to get the attention that it deserves
Star Ocean: The Divine Force was my favorite game of 2022.
It's amazing.
I'm a few hours in and it is off to a really great start. The character interactions are very satisfying, and I like the combat.
Let's hope that it will sell well so they produce more Star Ocean games!!
Hope you’re feeling better Johnny! Thanks for the amazing content ❤️
Chained Echoes left me speechless like no other game managed this year, what a story, so many surprises, the music, the gameplay, just everything!
I feel the same way about Star Ocean, I have always **enjoyed** them, and played through most of them. But they have always felt like second tier experiences to me. That said, Divine Force is my favorite in the series besides Second Story and I actually loved it.
Yeah I agree, Divine Force was awesome.
I missed tons because I've been playing Falcoms Trails series. Each game has taken me a minimum of 150hrs, some well over 200. I'm addicted to the world, and I feel withdrawal when I'm not exploring & playing in it
I love Falcom and play all the games but don’t know how you played them for 200 hours haha
Going through Soul Hackers 2 after getting it for Christmas. I’m digging it, very aesthetically pleasing especially the bar with the cherry blossom tree
I'd suggest you take your time, it gets annoying if you stick with it for too long. It might just be me though.
I thought i enjoy Soul hacker 2 , then dead and not enjoyable
I’m currently playing Signalis (game pass). Very intriguing retro inspired survival horror. Haunting atmosphere and lots of mystery surrounding the world. I haven’t rolled credits yet but I am greatly enjoying my time with it.
Apparently there is more game after you first roll credits, kind of like NieR, a lot of people seem to miss it
@@gorogorogoro. thanks for the tip! I’ll be sure to check it out.
i started it, didn't get very far but i agree the atmosphere is great. the first time you had to kill something it genuinely scared me when it screamed 😂 super late with headphones in.
i just got bogged down with so many other games but i need to revisit it
I find the cutaways in the videos hilarious 😂
I really love this channel. I do not really have time to play games anymore but its fun to check in here and see how things are going. Thanks for the great content
Star Ocean the divine force was very good to me, the boy's story captured me pretty early on and I binged on it. It feels like a classic SNES JRPG in a modern form, FF-esque.
My theory on why you don’t like Star Ocean is maybe you don’t utilize the IC system as much.
Or maybe I’m just weird and like burning hours making a bunch of items and getting interesting combos of factors to make the most broken characters in the game.
To each their own, I love the game and hope the series continues with the energy they put into this one.
I've barely touched IC but I still love this game
Sounds like he just really can't shake off the image of the game versus the reality of it, can't enjoy it for what it is. For me, it was game of the year, pretty easily. It's double A jrpg and does wonders with the budget it had. Too bad the game got delayed and at the same time Square Enix went insane with the release rate in autumn and it got kinda buried, didn't get general much attention.
Oh yea Johnny enjoyed Valkyrie Elysium and that seems very meh to me, didn't like the demo either. So each to their own.
The towns, character dynamic etc all felt like SNES FF series. I thought it's reminiscent of a classic JRPG in every way possible, but in a modern form. I love it.
Tactics ogre reborn is incredible, it never grabbed me back on the psp and i loved ff tactics. The voice acting, time/anchor points to get missed characters and sped up battles makes it so much better. The voice acting hands down makes the story much more griping.
The psp one was also a remake.
@@AnarickTheDevil that's why he said that it never got him BACK to playing it on the psp :)
@@sultanbaba1230 That's not even close to what he said.
I hate the game is what I tell myself. 200 hours later I’m still telling myself I hate the game. Yeah I when I play it for another 200 to try to 100% the game I’ll still hate it. Even though it will be the only game I will say that
@@AnarickTheDevil you are damn right 😂 don't know how i could misread it so horribly bad
I love your videos, man. Years and years of enjoy since I’ve subscribed. Be well! Hi from Mexico.
I almost missed Elden Ring until I went through it the last two weeks of December and ended up getting the Platinum trophy on the last day of the year. I've been a FromSoftware fan since the late 90's and I put the game off since it released because I was just suffering from Souls fatigue and couldn't bring myself to play it. Glad to say I finally caved in many months later and went through it and LOVED it! Elden Ring, Tactics Ogre Reborn, and Live a Live are my three favorite games of 2022. Also, the amount of games Square Enix were putting out reminded me of the Squaresoft days of 1998-2000.
Get some sleep man. :D I'm little over 100 hours in my first playthrough of Elden Ring and I started the game in April. I was hoping to finish it by the end of the last year (making it the only game I played to the end in 2022), but didn't find the time.
This is the only channel i genuinely look forward to watching
great video. i love listening while driving at work
Catching up on Shakedown Hawaii, a game that’s been on my shelf for the best part of a year and it’s brilliant, i especially like the music
Sifu was on my radar for most of last year. Started it up last night. Looking forward to dive into its combat mechanics.
I was pleasantly surprised by Steelrising. It has a great atmosphere and unique alternative take on the French revolution 👌 awesome hidden gem.
Hi, I’m here from the video that u posted 6 years ago, about your quitting smoking journey and I wanted to thank you, u have such a big influence for me and today is the day I’m quitting this really bad habit, thank you so much!
I finally started playing the Shovel knight games, I really have enjoyed it. Playing in small doses in between A boy and his blob (wii) and PC engine shooters. I had a good christmas lol
Man once again you turned me on to some past that I love! Thanx again Johnny I'm with you on the Star Ocean thing I never could get on that wagon either but Chained Echos looks awesome!! I'm beating Dio Feild now bc of you it's great and can't wait to sink my teeth in Echos!!! You're awesome man!
As a mostly Switch player these days I love this channel because it exposes me to some other stuff I would be into on other platforms. Happy new year 🎉John all the best for 2023. I am taking a week off for Zelda this may:) vacation time.
Got a break from work, went to the beach, got back into tropical freeze and beat it looking at the ocean.
Greetings from Colorado! We all appreciate you!
Glad you're feeling better!
You might wanna think about changing the title of this video. Before I watched, I thought the video was about games you missed, as in never played, in 2022.
Tactics Ogre was originally released on SNES so it is from an even more distant past than Johnny thinks. Makes me feel old just thinking about it.
I don't think the early version were English though so he's probably talking about the first western release.
I'm only here to look for this comment or make it. Noice.
so true, AND both titles were actually Enix titles (before squaresoft and enix merged). fun stuff
I missed out on Triangle Strategy. And I’m kinda surprised at how much I’m liking it.
Happy to see you checked out Chained Echoes and Star Ocean TDF. Loved both with Chained Echoes having been my personal GotY.
We were both sick during the Christmas break I see. Hope all is well now. This was a good topic for a video.
Not a game from 2022, but I play from time to time Sniper Elite 4 on the Switch, and it is awesome! I'm not one who really enjoy stealth games, nor shooter games, but the game is brilliant! It is so rewarding to kill with Sniper and then to get a cool shot that shows their insides getting destroyed. It is brutal, but exactly to my taste which doesn't like too violent stuff.
Very happy with Tactics Ogre, it's a perfect example of how much love games use to get when compared to new games like Triangle Strategy.
Awesome video! I still have a bunch of 2022 games I got for Christmas I have to get through and Star Ocean is one of them! Crisis Core, DQ Treasures, Harvestella and more! I have a lot of catching up to do!
Love your positivity. So many channels just hate on everything.
I usually only end up playing about 10 games for the current year as I often wait for price drops.
I got Bayonetta 3, Splatoon 3, Mario Strikers, Switch Sports, Fire Emblem Warriors, Shin Megami Tensei V for Christmas/Birthday (as they are so close), and I beat the first 4 games, SMT5 is going to be one of those "I'm gonna get to you" games as I've been eating through my retro backlog, beating the last Genesis, SNES and GBA games I own and currently working on the last 2 PS1. Can't believe I did Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts in 1 day after getting home from work though.
Some other highlight games: Cuphead, Pilotwings (SNES), Sonic Advance, Croc Legend of the Gobbos (PS1).
I had some time to play games as I caught a cold and ended up with a short week at work after new years.
I have a huge backlog is really hard to catch up
I just started with crisis core and boy this game is a huge improvement love your show John keep it up
Great episode!!!
Looking forward for some more anime content in the future. I remember a couple of months ago you did a poll if we would like to see some more anime content or not. Maybe the documentary about the anime convention you attended in the 2000. Speaking of that, I miss Andrew not being on the show.
Or maybe a one-0ff episode about non-videogame-related music/vinyl/CDs.
As you can tell, Johnny, I'm a long time fan. lol
Soul hackers 2, star ocean divine force , legend of Mana and trails from zero
I was one of several people to recommend Chained Echoes. This video makes me happy ❤
*Happy Birthday John!* I hope you have a great time with family, crack cookies (haha), and of course Video Games! 😆Be well, and thank you for the continued fun and passion over the years - Ravi
I was thinking of getting Tactics Ogre Reborn because I'd heard great things, but then I was also reminded of its connection to the original Final Fantasy Tactics. And since I have a copy, my New Year's treat to myself was starting that instead on the original PS1, haha! After a few hours I think I might be hooked, so eventually I may get into Reborn--thanks for your cautious take for newcomers, Johnny, and I'm glad you're feeling better!
I felt the EXACT same way about Star Ocean. Its fine. I decided to finally finish Jedi Fallen Order since the sequel was announced. That was a lot of fun!
Awesome video man 😎!
Got Parasite 1 & 2 physical copies for my PS1, replaying them has been so great!
Star Ocean 2 the only one I love. Rest are middle of the road for me.
I hope to play Horizon Forbidden West, Dying Light 2, Ghostwire Tokyo, A Plague Tale Requiem, Sifu, The Callisto Protocol and Evil West as well as older games such as Dying Light, Dead Island etc. Great video Johnny!
Just finished up Jedi Fallen Order it was one of those games that slipped through the cracks for me
Subbing - here's to 2023 🤙🥂🎉
im so glad you played chained echoes, its a masterpiece
I finally played YS VIII on PS5. It was my first time playing it, as well as my first YS game. I really enjoyed it. I don't normally come close to completing everything in a game, but this was one of the few exceptions where I almost 100 percent the game. I wish I had more time to go back and play it again, but there are just too many games to play.
Hey, glad to hear of another player coming on to Ys VIII late in the game. I played it for the first time July-September 2022. Wonderful game that I always hope more people will get a chance to enjoy.
I'm still catching up on games released in 2016
Cultic. Amazing old school FPS shooter from back in the days. I loved it !!
Playing Chained Echos now. I’m 30 hours in and having a blast.
MARVEL MIDNIGHTS SUNS - OMG what a great game! A game i didnt wait for IT but i needed IT!
I loved Star Ocean TDF. A real quality return to form after the last few games but not quite as good as Till the End of Time. That’ll always be MY star ocean game. I’d recommend sticking with it a bit longer and see if it clicks.
You know, you've summed up WHY I don't click with the Star Ocean games: Because I expect them to be an offline Phantasy Star Online. And they aren't. (Dare I say, they're better than NGS, though).
They aren't better or worse than Phantasy Star, but they are different enough for our subconscious to feel cheated.
i love your collection ;) 💞
Currently playing demon throttle from last year. AWESOME game!
I got Atelier Ryza 1 for Christmas but I haven't gotten to playing it yet, it'll be the first Atelier I've ever played so a whole new experience for me. At least if I like it I know there'll be two more games to play afterward.
Hey I just got Atlelier Ryza too and it's also my first Atelier. I'm about 8 hours in. I'll tell you this. I'm currently playing it and Chained Echoes. I like Atelier more. The problems in Chained Echoes are dragging it down for me and while I was hesitant about Atelier sucking me in (I thought it would just be a fun crafting game to do on the side) I am thoroughly enjoying the crafting AND now that I'm understanding the combat more I'm finding the fun there too. It's definitely different but I think that's why I'm more interested in it at the moment.
@@cartergreen2309 That gets me enthusiastic about playing it. I'm just faced with the battle of the backlog right now but I'll get to it for sure.
@@bradtuttle2674 yeah man it's been fun. Go into it expecting a more laid back feel and understanding it's all about the crafting and spend the time learning the combat and I think you'll have fun. I totally get the backlog. I just got back into jrpgs after about 20 years and I'm playing catch up hard lol
I am playing Biomutant now. And actually really loving it.
I finally picked up Elden Ring. I still need to dive into Tactics Ogre. I finally got a PS5 and XBox series X. Hopefully I can find the time this year to enjoy them.
What also is to notice here is that Chained Echoes was made by just one Dude from Germany. And for that he did an awesome Job.
I missed Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys, not from 2022 but 1993 and am playing through it now. Having a blast.
I've been digging into my backlog this year. I finished xenoblade 2, torna, Ys 8, Ys celceta, Dragon Quest 11, fragile dreams on wii, the last of us, and now I'm playing monster Hunter stories on the 3ds. Still need to play xenoblade 3... This spring hopefully.
I never play mobile games but I downloaded Vampire Survivors to see what all the fuss is about. It’s so much fun! Very satisfying and fun to play.
I missed all these games hahaha. I'm thinking about starting FFVII Crisis Core Remastered, but honestly I quit drinking and am distracting myself by getting into reading again. I think that might be a good transition to a story heavy game next... Possibly Triangle Strategy. I played the demo and the story seemed very in depth. Man, I need to play Chained Echoes... That looks really good. Great video, as always!
I’ve sunk a ton of time into Tactics Ogre Reborn and I’ve recently started Chained Echoes I’m digging it so far.
Picked up Harvestella on sale, surprised how much I'm enjoying it!
I’m playing Star Ocean Divine Force and Trails from Zero. Both are a lot of fun. Just finished SMT Strange Journey and these are so much more relaxing to play.
The last week, i've played The Wolf Among Us. I bought back in 2014, but haven't played it until now
I haven’t played Chained Echoes yet because I don’t want to pay that money if it’s not a physical version. However, the 2022 game I missed that I’m playing now is GOW Ragnarok. WOW what a great game
I missed basically every game in 2022. Spent the entire year too broke for gaming. Just means 2023 will be the year of discounted 2022 games, haha.
I played atelier Ryza when it came out and had a great time, but I missed the sequel. With the third Ryza game coming out, I’m finally getting around to the second
“Competent” does sound like a bit of an underhanded way to describe something as classic as Tactics Ogre haha
Honestly I've been playing games from my library. I've been trying to catch up. I mostly been playing Xenoblade 3 but limited run. Finally mailed my copy of River City girls zero and the Castlevania Requiem collection. I waited over a year to finally get it. But this year I'm pretty excited to play a few upcoming titles. I plan on getting fire emblem later on this month
I'm just now playing Elden Ring, picking it up on the winter Steam sale, having it be my first Souls experience. I was gifted Tactics Ogre on Switch for Christmas, and I'm looking forward to that too but not sure when I'm going to get around to it with Fire Emblem coming up soon and it also being a Strategy RPG.
Im replaying the Witcher 3 on ps5 it’s amazing going back to this game
Been playing V Rising, might only be on PC. It's probably my favorite survival-builder game so far. It's an isometric top-down ARPG style.
I missed Elden Ring and God of War: R but instead I'm just sitting here playing vampire survivors 🤣🤣🤣
I got New super Mario bros u deluxe and Splatoon 3 for Christmas. I am currently playing those. Then onto the rest of my games in my backlog.
I missed Xenoblade 3. I was disappointed in how convoluted the combat was in 2, and I naturally thought 3 would be even more complex to up the ante. But I got persuaded to try it anyway, and it has blown me away.
The combat is much better than 2, much simpler. And the world, story and music are at the highest possible level. Massive game. Massive achievement. I love it.
It's on my mind to start ASAP but I'm scared I'll not have enough time to fully enjoy it haha
@@TheBouncerBecksIt's a big game, but very comfy to play. Not at all stressful, and it has tons of quality of life features which make things very smooth.
The bigger side quests are Witcher 3 quality, smaller ones may be skipped if time presses.
@@TheBouncerBecks Understandable. I'm hyped for One Piece Odyssey and a bunch of other massive games, and can already feel the heat. But I'd say this is still absolutely worth it.
This feels like a game where no (or very few) corners were cut, and Nintendo allowed the team to be very ambitious and non-compromising.
I am playing Pentiment, enjoying it, the art style & solving mysteries akin to titles like Broken Sword with humour akin to the Monkey Island games.
I played Kirby and the Forgotten Land over my holiday break and I knew it was going to be decent, but I really ended up loving it! Great game.
Finally playing Bayo 3 here. Game is crazy lol love it.
Just started Bayonetta 3 a few days ago. So fun!
Originally missed out on Soulstice. Got it for Xmas, and it's great
I’m about 8 hours into star ocean divine force and I’m enjoying it. It’s basicly a action jrpg but plenty of exploring and customization
I’m preparing to play Soul Hackers 2. The game gave me some alt-Imagine vibes, which is a fave of mine in the SMT line of games. 👻
I ALMOST missed DNF Duel but I picked it up after it was updated and on sale and I am very happy I did. Really easy to get into and I feel like it might be as good as Strive!
Still playing through God of War Ragnarok, LEGO Star Wars, and just finished Potion Permit. I have a large backlog though too 😅
I just started Vampire Survivors. It's a love letter to Castlevania. So addicting.
Crisis Core on the Switch. I’ve been grinding away on the side missions and I’m loving it.
The side missions are so simple, but surprisingly satisfying. And, if you take care of all of them as they become available, you're OP in the regular missions.
@@velosiped135 that’s why I am doing it. :p I love over powered.
Currently addicted to the crisis core missions! Awesome game and a must for FF7 fans.
Star ocean was 100% the sleeper hit I loved playing through that game. Tactics ogre reborn is also a fantastic game. I'm currently playing through chained echoes. But I'm really liking it.
Did you get a chance to play through legend of heroes: trails from zero.
Nightmare Reaper was my favorite game released in 2022. Still trying to catch up with my backlog though
im looking forward to baten kaitos pack though as well but i never knew about suikuden remake now i hope to get that soon
I missed every game of 2022. Still working on 2021 2020 2019 and so on. Only about 1 hour a day of gaming time means I will never run out of games to play, even if they stopped making them today!
