Batman looks amazing, very worthy of being gifted. I think your friend will appreciate the time and effort you put into it. The Zombicide Black Plague kickstarter had a character based on Batman. It might be worth checking out.
I applaud the trying something new. I have a bunch of models I am trying to figure out how best to paint with an iridescent pattern and can't bring myself to just put paint on them and try so, thank you for being brave and showing the way.
I think I would have approached this in reverse. With an airbrush, paint the blue to purple colors over a light grey or white primer. Then airbrush the grey bodysuit, followed by a little highlight and shadow. After those colors were laid down, hand paint the black to block in the dark areas. That way, the colors are blended with the airbrush which is easier and quicker than blending by hand. The black didn't look shaded, so a solid base coat of black with a hand brush and that stark contrast.
@@tabletopalchemy An alternative with the black is to paint the colors then mask off the areas that you want to keep in color, then airbrush black over the model, then removed the masking. However, the masking would be time consuming.
Love it and it's good to see and hear the tribulations you've gone through. I've primed a 75mm tall Hellboy red to go for a similar cel shaded vibe. It won't be done until after Christmas, my hobby space is the kitchen table and I'm not partial to sharing it. If mine comes out half as well as your Batman, I;'ll be extremely happy.
Dude, love it, looks like a really good hybrid between cell shading and modell shading - definitely a style worth looking further into and try to develope even more into a stylized type thing :)
Very cool paint job. Under a cloche, on a shelf, I think it will look amaze-balls. You sir, are a good friend to have. This project has sparked an idea.. I have been watching a fellow on YT that professionally paints minis using oil paints. He mixes blue and brown to get a quite pleasing black. I reckon I might see if Etsy has a mini available. I already have several cloche in a cupboard under the sink. A few years ago I got a mate the Miller graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns. This might be a call back to that. I might add a thin airbrushed on, black oil-wash as a final touch. Thanks for the inspiration.
No shortage of cool minis on Etsy! Thanks man glad you like it - and I got the cloche yesterday and it doesn’t look too shabby in there! Give it a try! 🍻
Dude ! I think its a really cool paint job, it's always easy to be your own biggest critic, but in my opinion it looks great. It certainly mimics the style of the original art , whilst being uniquely it's own thing. Kudos to you for trying something completely different, it's a top job mate !
Looks great. Ive seen similar styles where they work in the inverse, doing all their color blocking and then directly painting in the solid black shadows. The orange background final shot really helps it pop, I fear you have to paint the dome now.
Dang it, I’m fearing that too lol. Yes someone else also suggested the inverse color process and I think that would be cool to try out as well. So many things to try! 🍻
What the heck, man?! This looks dope!! You're only gonna get better with practice, but that's a helluva first shot. You're friend's gonna love it. Cheers! 🍻
I've seen people that paint over some beautiful antiques. I couldn't imagine painting that Batman any other way, because it's a sculpture of the comic, and you made it look just like the comic, it looks great, especially the ears. If you did it traditional, it would look like a bad version of that comic.
Stop being this hard for the first time at anything for the ever-loving sake of your own hobby! You did it, it's done, you learned something, and it's good. I get where the self-deprecation comes from, as we've all been there when we tried NMM or OSL for the first time. The comic book style on minis is just a different way of looking at a project. You know your friend will like it and be pleased as it comes from you, it's your artistic expression. As always, keep plugging away when you have the time.
@@tabletopalchemy I know, I know, but it's more than just sentiment for someone like myself. We all would love for what we see in our heads to be what we produce. This is a gift, though, and that speaks to the kind of person you're giving it to and the effort you put into something like this. If it were for a competition, I'd understand it even more. I'd love to know someone I could feel is worth painting a mini for, but alas, I think that most people I know, something like this, would fall flat. Just don't do what most would do. When they see it, avoid pointing out what you think is wrong. Let them do all the talking. Anyway, it's good you're still here plugging away on the minis, gaming, and the movie project.
Sooooooo, something really, really weird is going on with my browser or YT or both. Your video is dubbed to Italian and I can't get it to go back to English 😅 On one side it's really weird, on the other you sound really good as an Italian Buon signore! Now about that mini paint-job. Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow!!! Just freakin' WOW!
That is bizarre! Italian you say? Well… more vino I guess?! 😂 (I didn’t when know dubbing was a thing UA-cam did jeez.) And thanks, I’m glad you like the figure!
I have a few larger scale models I've 3d printed and painted, Constantine, Swamp thing bust and some other 1/10 scale stuff, up close I can see every mistake but on the other side of my room, on a shelf they look great. I love the paint job you did, I have the comic myself but more importantly, your mate will love it because you painted it. As for losing bits - I lost Constantine's ciggie and it bugs the hell out of me.
Never painted a miniature, so probably shouldn't be giving advise... BUT, i think you could have painted bit of hatching in certain areas in place of mid-tones. Would have achieved a similar effect to mid-tones while adding comic booky texture. I think the model looks great either way!!
Thanks! I’ve heard of the so-flats, been meaning to try em out. And I have some paynes gray ink, never thought to use that and I totally should have. 🍻
That's very cool. I turned out really nice!
Thanks! 🍻

Thanks! That black plague set was the only one I ever wanted to pick up (but never did 😑) 🍻

Well all right, when in doubt, just sling some paint lol. Good luck! 🤙🍻
This was good. Love your process, trying something new, getting feedback and producing a fabulous final result. Thanks for sharing.
Nice! 🤙🍻

Ah that’s a great idea! Dang now I wanna try again lol.

Yes masking the muscle texture would be tough - maybe liquid mask would be worth trying in that method.
That is a phenomenal job!

Oh that sounds awesome (both the Hellboy and the not sharing space lol)🍻
We are usually our own harshest critics, and I think it came out looking rad. If I got that for Christmas, I'd be super happy!
Thanks, that’s much appreciated 🤙🍻
I like that look! Though ive become more partial to sketchy, comic style painting in general.
Cool yeah it definitely gives me some ideas to try on more regular minis. 🍻
Fun video!

Thanks man, I agree there’s some interesting things learned here for the future 🤙🍻
Excellent 👌
Love it! 10 out of 10
Well thanks! 🍻

Good work! Really nice!
Looks good man, nice job.
WOW! That's great!
Oh thanks! 🍻

Thanks man, yeah I just couldn’t not see trying to paint it this way. I kind of want to explore this technique more now! 🍻
Looks cool. Close ups don't matter so much as overall.
Definitely what I’m hoping lol. 🍻

Aw losing the cigarette is a bummer, dang. Right on, tho, much appreciated. I’d be in (storage) trouble if I had a printer lol! 🍻
Out-fucking-standing!
To any 3D artists out there, I would LOVE for someone to make Norm Breyfogle sculpts! Just sayin.
Thank you - and sculpts of Norm’s art would be awesome! 🍻

I agree - the conundrums of having ideas but lacking the skills lol. 🍻
Friend, you downplay your skill. Keep up the good work
Well, much appreciated 🤙🍻
looks alot better than you give yourself credit for man.
as a sidenote -Have a look at Golden SoFlat black and payne's grey
Thanks! I’ve heard of the so-flats, been meaning to try em out. And I have some paynes gray ink, never thought to use that and I totally should have. 🍻
@tabletopalchemy the soflats are amazeballs, but i really recommend those two as a start if you play with darkness alot
Looks like rob liefeld has a competitor
🤣 brutal but probably true! 🍻
Crass
Oof... the thumbnail is the actual illustration and not the figure. 👎
