- The Downing Street mortar attack was carried out by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) on 10 Downing Street, London, the British Prime Minister John Major's official residence. The 7 February 1991 attack, an assassination attempt on Major and his War Cabinet who were meeting to discuss the Gulf War, was originally planned to target Major's predecessor Margaret Thatcher. Two shells overshot Downing Street and failed to explode, and one shell exploded in the rear garden of 10 Downing Street. No members of the cabinet were injured, though four other people received minor injuries, including two police officers. Major condemned the assassination attempt, stating "democracies cannot be intimidated by terrorism".

your comment is totally out of context. there isn't a terrorist in this world as well trained as the SAS. the majority of the time with a few exceptions the objective of Irish terrorism was to cause terror, fear and disruption, casualties were a bonus. sometimes they liked to cause outrage by hitting soft targets such as blowing up military bands , horses on parade and civilians shopping. In this instance security had been breached and they would have considered this attack a success.

Catholics have now got equal rights thanks to them, as civil rights obviously didnt get catholics too far, and yes your right it will be up to the irish citizens and British citizens of the north to vote for what they want. This would never of happened if the ira didnt force the brits to the table. Catholics will be in a majority shortly, the business sector would rather have it. When was the last time there was an official vote that showed the people of the north wanted to be ruled by Britain?
