crazy to see how well dressed and slim everyone was back then
Riot diet, sure you cannot beat it, for weight loss.
Best dressed rioters in the world.
I was thinking the same thing. When I lived in Derry it was track suits.
@@oxouk town full of athletes
@@paulduffy4585 Lol, best comment thread.
😆
Put your Sunday suit on for a day out (ie attend a riot too).
The police saturated the area for days with acrid tear gas , everyone was wearing handkerchiefs soaked in vinegar to try to get relief from the gas which burned the eyes and caused lung problems.
At that time the unemployment rate of Derry youths was at 40% and frustration and anger at the Unionist dominated parliament led to a campaign for Civil Rights as not every adult was entitled to a vote while a Unionist businessman or property owner could have multiple votes , this gerrymandering meant that a Unionist minority in Derry controlled a largely nationalist population and constantly worked against the better interests of the community , the placing of the University of Ulster in Unionist Coleraine was a prime example of the Unionist apartheid state , the Derry youths by 1969 had enough of being discriminated against and living lives of deprivation, the attitude was if the state is going to ignore me as a citizen then the state is not fit for purpose and must fall , this began the “ Troubles”.
It makes it look like this all happened in one day. It started on August 12 when the Apprentice Boys parade took place. The army were called in on the afternoon of August 14.
Derry not londonderry
Piss off. Nobody cares. And I'm from the Creggan.
Kinda sums up the argument
Good information
I went there a couple months ago! That's mad
Thought for a second batman was gonna show up
I like the bit at 1.18, looks like the guy on the pavement thought "Oh look, a cafe, I'll grab a cuppa....."
Everything was going Smoothly with the parade and then Tempers begin to Flare and things begin to get Ugly.
I love the stirring, martial music.
FREE DERRY*
And there it started
DERRY YA GAMMY!! ITS DERRY
0:54 Early example of the moonwalk, later stolen by Michael Jackson.

Apprentice Boys march through Catholic Derry was a big middle finger to them. Not surprisingly riots were the outcome.
"Ireland unfree shall never be at peace"
- Padriag Pearse.
Unfree from what? At the end of the day yous will just find another way to hate your neighbour. Look at the south.
He was all too right
A peaceful protest. Of Gentlemen.

The Apprentice Boys of Derry now have over 10,000 members. New branch clubs have opened up outside Londonderry in Australia and Canada 🇬🇧
@@elnotisimo err.. right.
Derry you fool DERRY!
Why are they the apprentice boys of Derry, if they come from Londonderry....
@@calumpatrick319it is not a logical position.
KING BILLY.!!

Crazy scenes British and Irish people never back down from a fight, (in fact Irish fighting Irish ridiculous) part of their intrenched heritage, history shows wars can last decades, very disappointing, (paramilitary splinter groups & real terrorism👎👎👎) the Irish/UK govt should have negotiated a peace deal, strategic hand back & new effective govt process. In fact for decades the Irish Govt really wanted no part in the troubled north. Being Australian, I say get the British troops back home and get/help the Irish Govt to step up and sort out their troubled north. Let the Irish people live in peace.
Yeah, they did. All of that.
No dought Hume and McGuiness in the middle of it stirring it up
No dought.
Definitely but regarded as men of peace Hume was a trouble maker, bernadette devlin was another.
@@Timberdoodle197 no dought about it hi
No. John Hume can be seen 45-6 seconds in, trying to push back the crowd, along with local Nationalist MP(NI) Eddie McAteer.
5th October 1968 the RUC attack civil rights protesters. January 1969 B specials attack protesters at Burntollet Bridge then the RUC go into the Bogside to attack people and destroy homes and in April 1969 the RUC batter Samuel Devanney leading to his death. They were the ones who caused the conflict.
