I did two tours in the 80,s on the border far away from the madness of Belfast. You wouldn't know the difference from the Catholics and Protestants just by sight unless you had a players list of all the Known IRA. Stopped and searched quite a few on the border checkpoints but I'm pleased to say I never had to fire a shot in anger. I could never understand the animosity between the different factions and it puzzled me why they never got along being an atheist but christened church of England myself. I'm glad it's sorted out now because I wouldn't like it to go back to the bad old days.

I'm Catholic and we don't worship Mary. We honour her as the Mother of God. We worship Jesus Christ. I often wonder why this is so difficult for others to understand. I never knew Catholics in Ireland ever went through the type of discrimination this man is describing. It's often mind boggling to me how human beings insist on mistreating one another over absolutely ridiculous reasons.

I was born into a very protestant home and my dad was taken prisoner by the IRA whilst they used his car to carry out an operation and he never recovered from the trauma BUT I say without hesitation that the protestant people from the 1920s to the 1960s should have done more to recognise the outrageous discrimination against people who simply wanted to be Irish. The roles will be reversed when a United Ireland comes which it will before 2030 and the protestants will then know what it is like to be in such a minority - I have no doubt there will be anarchy in loyalist areas when this inevitably and democratically happens.

    • @TheScaryTruthCatalyst

When the Irish Free State was founded, it was founded with rampant Catholicism at its core. Burnings and attacks on Protestant homes was common in rural areas during the 1920s throughout the Free State with IRA attacks continuing in the North. This created a 'cold war' between north and south...A united Ireland is meaningless in today's context as both the UK and Republic of Ireland and mere economic zones, overwhelmed with 'non-islanders' and run by the same Globalists.

Unfortunately, armed struggle has done nothing but killed men, women and children and imprisoned men and women. I understand how easy it was to get caught up in wanting to fight for your freedom and country, but everyone was just disposable on both sides to the paramilitary groups. And to think that not much has changed in NI since the 1980s is just extremely disappointing and sad..but it seems like it is Irish history, doesn't it? I hope to see a united country and one where religion does not define a person...

I was born in Derry too. The "problem" of the name, if this man is honest, occurs only when one is away from "home". EVERYBODY in Derry calls it by the shortened version. I was born into a home with parents who didn't teach us that religion was something to beat our neighbor with who worshipped in another way!! The British army entered Ireland at the behest of the Nationalist community & they only became the bad guys to Nationalists when they realised it was unfair to only search Loyalist communities & drive past barricades leading to Nationalist communities where guns & bombs were being gathered up. The R.U.C. was not a protestant police force. Put simply any Catholic who tried to join was shot! We lived in the U.S.A. for half our lives & there is simply NO comparison to the civil rights abuses that were perpetrated on the African-American communities, especially in the southern states. We all know about "Bloody Sunday" but never, "Bloody Friday" when almost 30 bombs were planted by the I.R.A., just as schools were getting out. One man was asked to "identify his son" & when he went to do so was handed a bent signet ring, the ONLY thing left of his son. He talks of armed struggle & "war". It wasn't war, as paramilitaries wear regular clothes & can't be identified as the enemy. You can all hear what a "brave boy" he was, destroying his own city & slaughtering his fellow countrymen...........His turn around didn't come quickly enough for those whom he murdered. I'd like to see him try writing a letter of apology to them. You may hear of the I.R.A. only killing drug dealers now & think that they're doing the community a service. Not so. Other drug dealers are impinging on "their" territory &, so, they have to be killed!! A woman saw a comment I'd written (2 weeks ago) of how lovely it was to have normal life back. She was a Roman Catholic from the Bogside in Derry, like the monster in this video. She wrote, "It may have changed for you but not for anyone living in a Republican stronghold. Our kids have their kneecaps shot out for the smallest of offences but especially if they don't buy drugs from the I.R.A. We get a call to actually bring our own children to be "punished", if we don't, they come to get them at home & kill them in front of us". Now for a strange ending to this very strange "documentary". Despite "the troubles", Northern Ireland usually came near the top or held the top spot for the "safest place to vacation in Europe". Despite the bombs in certain "strongholds", minor crime was not & is not a big issue in N. Ireland. We were blessed to live in a beautiful country & simply need to give peace a decent chance!

Just to clarify this point, that is factually untrue (for the few people that may read it) While there was a marked decrease in the population of Protestants in what would become the Republic of Ireland it was not due to government or paramilitary discrimination post Anglo-Irish Treaty. As one example of this mixed marriages in the pre Free State were common, 15% of Protestant men married Catholics with purportedly 4/5 raising Catholic children.
Also for stats on Protestantism pre Free State; 10% of the population of the 26 were Protestant around 1900, declining to a low of 3% in the 1990s. The population of Protestants now has grown to 4% as of the 2011 census.
While there is a substantial reduction of Protestants halving of their numbers is a large reduction again this can be attributed to a variety of aspects such as the British government representatives whether army auxiliary constabulary or other civil service would most likely follow their employers out of the Free State as well as given that it can be fairly assumed Protestants tended to have stronger connections to U.K. as well as being a driving force behind industry pre 1920.
There are 100% instances of violence committed against Protestants or British sympathisers as well as some instances of marginalisation but other important factors include the migrations of cultural groups across the border in Ireland. This is despicable and should be condemned in the strongest degree.
On the flipside Ireland’s first and fourth Presidents were Protestant, in my own constituency in Ulster we have Protestant Teachta Dala, though their religion is immaterial only that I went googling about them it turns out this self professed republican (supporter of the values of a Republic not to be confused with the nationalist Republicans) is of Unionist stock.
The scars of sectarianism are much lessened south of the border, that’s not to pretend they don’t exist, they definitely do. But by in large we have managed to lessen the religious emphasis of the past to the point the old labels are almost meaningless and hopefully the same will happen to Northern Ireland.
I am happy to engage with anyone willing to fruitfully converse on these areas, especially as I become more reflective on the past as fears of the hardening of the border I live near grows.

Well half true, Britain isn't an empire using the world colonies and Ireland as slaves for resources anymore, instead each international territory in our modern world, today, gets their own democratic government with the military support and finical benefit of being legally considered a British oversea's territory with of course mutually sharing the increased tax's of from the British mainland and the international mainland itself - so is the same with Northern Ireland and in fact, Northern Ireland actually has quite a few more legal freedoms than the average British person in Scotland, England or Wales, the first I know is that the people of Northern Ireland actually is legally allowed to defend themselves (meaning they can actually purchase objects with the intent of harm) and even legally purchase a pistol firearm! So yes Northern Ireland is under 'British Rule' but it's not what it sounds and as we've learned from the past, the relationship with the rest of the UK with Northern Ireland as stated is mutually beneficial nowadays.

Totally agree with you!! Full of himself, he thought he was a "hero"and still thinks so. Just seeking attention as usual. Spits at the face of former republicans as well, must be living abroad.
He could have never taken part in the peace process as he was in jail. Freed thanks to the GFA by the way. Megalomaniac attention seeker.

Our Lord does not differentiate between Catholics or Protestants. He does care about the killing of his children in his name. Those that do, will face the Lords final judgement no
    mater what the cause.

If you changed Catholic and Protestant to Shia and Sunni and all in Arabic, the comment section would lead you to believe this was a video about the Iran/Iraq War.

Before you think of an answer can i just point out that, other than the humans killing humans similarity! that's where the similarities END.
its a completely different kettle of fish altogether.
