While the Passat Estate doesn't have the most spacious cargo area among its rivals, you'd still call it a very practical car. All the qualities that make a good estate are present and correct: a large, square boot with a big opening; a split-folding rear bench seat that easily folds flat for increased luggage space; and a useful amount of storage around the cabin. Add to that a selection of smooth and economical diesel engines to a standard specification that has all the essentials, and the Passat Estate is a desirable car.

Mat Watson, u came a long way brother. Keep it up
Thanks Matt, I really wanted to see the completely flat rear seats when folded down, you're the only one that shows that clearly when testing a car, so that's why I've subscribed to your channel. (actualy it's not yours, but you know what I mean)
i own this car and it's very good. I have the BXE model, 1.9 tdi and i plan to move on the new passat in 2013. this passat it's pretty good, comfy, safe and reliable. also i have a good fuel consumption which is great because the car is actually pretty big, larger than a 3 series or audi a4. Passat i love you!!
Just got mine for the first time getting it on Friday I can’t wait!! SatNav reverse camera and heated seats I can’t wait!
I have a 2008 Passat with low miles and it was in 2008 that they changed the engine to a common rail diesel. It basically solved all the previous engine issues and made it smoother and quieter to boot. I have had it for a couple of months now and I have to say I love it, great to drive and even better fuel economy. I was disappointed that it didn't have electric rear windows but as it's only really me in the car most of the time that wasn't a deal breaker. Buying the Passat after owning a Honda the materials are definetly better quality in the Passat... but I do miss how my Honda handled.. and the VTECH. One thing im surprised he doesn't mention is the Auto Hold which is brilliant when sitting on a hill.... no more hill starts for me!
The MK.1 Passat (1973-1980) came as a saloon, hatchback and estate. So there was a hatchback in the Passat 'life'.
Laylee: So you’re saying the Passat came as a hatchback?
Laylee: I was born on 1/1/80.
Laylee: And no, I did not see it as a hatchback.
Laylee: Sorry for being rude.
Laylee: Respect VW!
Hey! Are you Mat Watson? Mat Watson? From carwow?????? INCREDIBLE
no its rebecca jackson
@@Top_Gear_Clips_Central 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thinking of getting another passat but i still can not let my old 99 plate estate sport model passat go as it never lets me down even with 163k on the clock same exhaust, clutch, etc awesome cars the germans make.
i was really impressed with the flat folded boot. It seems the VW are the only people who worked out that if you can lift off and move the rear buttrest out of the way, the backrest can fall all the way down and set up a truly flat loading bay.
Same is on the golf. Very handy if you're moving big boxes around.
the mark 3 golf was the same flat with the seat lifted up
Believe it or not, it’s the same in my 1995 Vauxhall’s Astra 1.4 lsi. It’s very basic, but very well thought out
What do you think about the suspension( soft ride or not) (sedan or combi)?
I own a used 2007 Passat 2.0TDi 170 (BMR). So far I am really pleased. Great great car!
The fuel economy must be close to the golf
@@Alock94 I have sold it. Now I drive a brand new Skoda Octavia 1.5 TSi with ACT. Same fuel economy but with petrol.
@@drackula1985 I've been reading all the reviews about VW diesels and other brands alike (Mazda).
And it seems a move back to petrol is cheaper in the long run even if you sacrifice milage in the short run.
I was really looking to upgrade to a Tiguan, Passat or golf but I'm seriously turned off now after reading about problems with the DSG automatic box.
@@drackula1985Nice 👌
@@Alock94 Yeah, I think they have sorted out the issues with the gearbox if I am not mistaken, but they do have some annoying issues with their engines. Nothing major, but it's a brave new world for the petrol engine and the goal to make them most efficient possible. Diesels are not investment in the long run. Diesels will be banned in many cities no mater how much eco friendly tech are put into them.
I bought one new when i opened the glove there was a bottle of water awesome ! ☺
Nice! 😀 👍
The all purpose Volkswagen Passat wagon. Great information...
Future hear, I just bought a 2010 passat turbo diesel 140ks for About 2500 pounds in New Zealand, full service history, cam belt done new rubber all round. 1200 k range on 66 litre tank. Great fuel economy
It's a bit late but I'm getting my Passat soon so blessed
I'm going to get a 2007 tdi DSG
why does he always scratch the plastics with his nails
how many people go into a car and do that 😂
@@niteblaster1 to show if the material is good quality or not.
Congrats! What year did you get? I’m loving my ‘09 I bought a few months ago. Favorite car I’ve owned so far and I’ve had a lot lol
@@web_dev-rl2ve I've got the 2007 it's a great car
anonymous UK nice! I kinda want to drive the Passat with the V6. Wish mine had parking sensors and a backup camera too but other than that, great vehicle. Hope yours treats you well
@ClarophonistCJ Hatchbacks are VW golfs, Opel Corsa, Astra, Ford Focus etc...
I heard of quite a few cases of this problem (each case fuel pump died at about 90-100kkm, so did mine) VW forums are full of threads about that ;) but the issue concerns mostly on PD engines, from 2005-6, It's just faulty engine series, I maintain my car at 'official' VW service regularly, do all the check-ups etc.
Later they improved, started installing Common Rails, which are OK.
After repair I did 15000 km (totally 115000 km), with no problems so far. Hope it remains like that. Regards!
It's not a car I would buy for myself. But I don't deny I found it rather impressive.
Fake!
Man this car is great
You compare every car with vauxhall insignia ?
My 2003 Passat wagon made it to 312k problem free miles so I'm definitely getting this as my next vehicle
My 2003 VR5 had numerous issues and there are still quite a few of them left. The funny thing is that all of them are electronic ones...nothing went wrong on the mechanical side. From what I have read so far - the B6 are even worse. People can't seem to make their mind whether the B5/5.5 or the B6 was the least reliable Passat generation ever produced.
Ruddy Nora!
Flash to 2024… my 08 Passat wagon has 148k and still running strong. 💪
I have an 06 with 250k down. And Mine is dying on all Levels now 😢 Good luck with yours
I have a 2005 2.0 TDI Estate and had a few problems with engine. Once while driving on motorway I had fuel pump failure, fortunately I managed to pull over safely. Another time engine just died without warning. This time it was injector failure. For fuel pump service in Poland charges about £250, they didn't charge me for 4 injectors. Generally the car is comfy, drives pretty OK, many room inside and in the boot (3 golfbags & equipment easy fit in), but engine problems ruin the whole impression
@klramon Passat CC is not a hatchback... It has a conventional boot lid.
USA and ENGLAND
wagon is estate
sedan is saloon
USA is wrong.
SwiftHDX no, everybody knows a Saloon is where cowboys go to drink.
@@MakeshiftMemorial There aren't any cowboys in England.
Is it blue motion
@ClarophonistCJ No, most of those are station wagons, or estates. Audi A5 is not a hatchback, it's a sportback, or 4 door coupé.
Can you do old cars to?
0:30 are those wind-your-own windows ? Satnav but no power windows ? Was the guy that specced the car midly drunk ?
Only on the rear windows...
Germans do love their beer
its a bluemotion model, mainly bought by company car drivers (only 1 person in the car the majority of the time) so they prioritize the features most useful to them
It's good to know that the volvic is gettin' a bit warm now...
Good to hear the slurp on the water.
@dunti21 All of those are hatchbacks. Oh, I forgot the Vauxhall Insignia, too.
Is the saloon verion a good first car?
Other than being a bit big for a first car then yes it is good.
I got this estate as a first car, just brilliant.
Yes it was a good first car for me
Omg that particular Passat he’s reviewing hasn’t had an MOT since 2015 so whether someone crashed it or going around without one which is unlikely for that length of time 😮
thats shocking how did u find that out btw?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂This video is so good!Well..Better go tell the kids to do the dishes.
ok mate
@@Top_Gear_Clips_Centralok mate
Does anyone know if the side skirt and front lip of the Passat is from the factory or have they been modifications?
David Hui that comes with the r line option
Thank you
David Hui np
this is not the r-line version you can see it on the grill
It’s not quite as fun to drive as a Mazda 6, but, you know, it’s not far off. -Mat Watson, 2010
Yooka: You mentioned the Mazda 6 during the positives?!
Laylee: He did.
#respectVW #YookaLaylee
My Dad use to have a vw Passat Estate
Windy Widows And No Center Armerest?! LOL
But do the seats come out completly?
yesn´t
it might be that only in wanderland all use manuals
Why would you want it as a hatchback?!
Better looking (imo), more practical, and you can carry a dog in the boot.
ケンちゃんどこでSR買ったの?
@klramon I have to agree with you on that. :D
Matt Watson. My guyyy
This cars oil pump failed at 24,000 miles, resulting in a new engine being needed. So much for VW reliability
You so right my failed too new engine need 1600£
Hmmm manual rear windows on 2 VW passat. Weird..
vw... doesn't make them like this anymore also where the hell is the armrest was that an option LOL
is this the R36 variant?
R Line, not R36
You are Mat Watson, really?
@klramon Still a saloon
Rlly wish I had a 2006 instead of a 2005 for that XLR chord and front silver frame... sigh
FUTMZ you’re fun at parties
I love my R36.
Yeah, really nice car.
It's an outgoing model so you complaints are a bit outdated.
@sspope Sadly, most of the things he complains about are no different in the new 2011 model. For example, the interior is still full of cheap hard plastics. Golf 6 actually feels more expensive inside than the NEW Passat.
2018
?? you don't get an insignia hatchback either. It's too big to be one. The Passat has never had a hatchback version. That was a strange comment...
ua-cam.com/video/mHifGmeToVU/v-deo.html
Beware of that cam follower though.
2:34 That is soft touch on the Ford Mondeo..
as if that matters... the soft dashes always get so dusty and harder to clean on some models... the thing is that area you refer to still looks nice and expensive, if it was made of the cheap looking plastic that many cars used to have it would have been a different story, but that area looks totally fine and stylish in real life
Andreas Lie how often do you touch the dashboard?
The top of the dash is a softened plastic, and in my car I got a small pit in there, where my phone holder was mounted a bit low on my windscreen and was resting on the dashboard in the summer. I wouldn't mind having proper hard plastic there at all. I want to have good materials (leather, soft but solid plastics, metal) on things I touch -- steering wheel, gear shifter, door handles, all the knobs and switches...
Interior of this car is stylish? I got this as a companycar but damn, ITS DULL
That is the best looking passat of all time. They fucked up with newer models.
They chose the very basic model to review... In the Highline version, there are far more options and accessories.
its a pumpe duse motors ,they are sucks in compare to common rail which is now available
The vw passat is a car that has executive car tech and confert but at a lower price and i know this because i got a passat and it matches my unckles e class which is newer
The problem I found with this particular model is that out of warranty they can be ruinous to own.
Are they unreliable and expensive to fix?
@@asensibleyoungman2978 mine certainly was. Just about everything apart from the engine played up. VW parts are overpriced as well. If you want a German car then buy a BMW. They're nowhere remotely near as costly as people think.
@@paulanderson79 I don't be want a German car. I despise the image BMWs have. I buy Japanese. I was just curious as to whether the Passat was as good. Obvioulsy it isn't.
@@asensibleyoungman2978 I know what you mean. When I owned a 528i found a lot of drivers lost their manners around me. Which is kind of paradoxical. My manners are the same regardless of what car I'm driving. Personally I think Audi is the 'new' BMW. Interesting you mention Japanese. I current have a Mazda 6 and I am very happy with it. There's a bit more road and tyre noise than I'd like but all in all it's a great package. Very driver focused. handling and road holding are truly astonishing. I shan't be rushing back to a VW, that's for certain.
@@paulanderson79 I have a Mazda. The engine is bomb proof but it's the underneath that worries me. The rust problem is bad.
For some reason BMWs and Audis attract arrogant bully boy drivers who think they own the road. It's a shame for the decent folk who drive them
spot on motor
Well it should be the same car. Why not?
An interesting and detailed review I wrote to myself on the site: www.autosh-noi.ro/review-vw-passat-b6/, the right is in the Romanian language but can be translated with google translation for whoever wants to read a very good review. From my point of view it's a benchmark for who wants to buy a Passat B6.
No electric windows at the back? lol. Yeah that's real premium.
To be fair, there is little need for electric windows in the back.
Because its the base model, mine even got heated winshield nozzles and its the same 2007 B6 but with 3.6 VR6 fully loaded.
It lowers the risk of accidentally chopping off someone’s head 👍
That what you said at the end for a hatchback i a sign you don’t know anything about cars
I just noticed Mat watson from @matwatsoncars is here!
You cant mock a passat for not having a hatchback….it’s a passat, if you want a passat hatchback get a golf
if you want a passat as a hatchback, get a skoda superb.
Vw passat is better than 03-09 mazda 3/axela.
@dunti21 Yes you do get an Insignia hatch, other big hatchbacks
Ford Mondeo
Renault Laguna
Mazda 6
Skoda Octavia
Skoda Superb
Audi A5 Sportback
You would have to be an idiot to waste money on the impracticalities of a saloon car - get the hatch, or an estate
These cars are not hatchbacks. The hatchbacks are the Focus, Megane, A3 -- exception the Octavia.
Saloon cars that open like this are called Liftbacks.
I'm sorry but VW is NOT a premium brand 😂
Passat is Camry in Europe
What ?
Graeme Mockler Passat in Europe is equivalent to Toyota Camry in USA. In sales
Lol he never changed
Yeah, I heard about that, still won't get next Passat or any other VW.
come on, no hatch passat, it never was and it shouldn't never have a hatch version. why the reviewers in uk are so obsessed with hatches?
why they never wonder why there is no hatch in premium brands in middle class or in high class cars
I have won
What did you win?
