I love hearing about all the roles and work that go into productions. I'm such a huge movie nerd, I get excited over everything involved. Working on a big Hollywood production is my life goal. Just to do something, anything. Going to Universal Studios is one of my favoritest things, seeing the backlot, the sound stages, and I even freak out a little when filming is going on and you can see the set and crew as the studio tour tram drives through.
Yes he should do a youtube channel about behind the scences on set and introduce us to some people in these " roles" on set. Very interesting vid always wondered what all the people on the credits of s film did. wish id known this 25 years ago when i keft school x
Oh please make a UA-cam channel Mark! I myself and so many others would love to see your UA-cam channel on film making, behind the scenes, and just about the day in the life of a director, or film maker! Thanks. Matti for the awesome long UA-cam video! So much great information. I also was really glad and happy to hear that if you try one role it doesn’t mean you are going to be stuck in that role forever. Thanks man.
Yeah, totally Mark! You got tons of knowledge that would definitely benefit a lot of future film-makers/UA-camrs out there. You never know what you might create out of a new youtube channel Mark!... Oh, and do you think I can borrow that one-wheel too Matti?...
This is soooo good! Talking about doing multiple roles. When cheap jobs try to get you to do multiple things to 'cut down on costs', one of those roles will suffer. Do what is right for the project. Sometimes you can spread yourself too thin that way and it's not worth it. Thanks for uploading some wicked content, Matti. It's also nice to see someone else from a pro film background doing UA-cam. 👍👍
Although, I know its a really mundane thing but let's try say 'She/Her and They/Them' too instead of just 'He/Him" for roles? I know it's not much but it certainly helps people who might not be male in feeling welcome in the industry. Looking forward to new videos! 😀
A super helpful video for Videographers who start from the ground up by learning on their own! This is great for whenever you land an opportunity on a legit set.
Thanks Matti, trying to get myself on a set some place. I did work experience in a camera rental company and they want me back. Might be a good start! I'm literally about to drop out of college for this volunteer job. College feels like it's such a waste when I can get real life experience instead of pencil pushing nonsense.
For sure, do behind the scenes videos about film crews and how do you get to that position. I assume that people have to rise up the totem pole? Lovin your videos Matti, I get so much knowledge from you and the DOPE SQUAD. Huge thank you! I'm thinking to start my own channel but sometimes I think I'm just a nobody so nobody would care but well, I'm trying to get past that and just do it!
You can apply a lot of the core principals in this to all sorts of things in life which is amazing! Like you said anyone can be a hard worker and be good to work with!!
I think a lot about the first time I worked with a 1stAC. Absolutely amazing. I can't wait until my personal projects get to the point where I can just do that. Excellent video, Matti! It's nice to see information about sets being made more accessible as time goes on. Also, now I can just link people to this when they ask me about what a job they see in the credits is.
Hey Matti, thanks so much for this. I am going to be PA for a short and all this info is so helpful. I want to be sure I am prepared before I get on set. So thank you both 🙏
Spoiler alert, loved this video, Matti and BigOldThumbsUp to your friend for making his channel and sharing his stuff! Why I love youtube, is I always can find something attracting my personal interest. It may be simply entertaining or having packs of useful information, I can actually learn and apply. Any video can be watched and scrolled, if its kinda boring, like loosing its path. I remember You mentioned in one vid, you're going to make a video about roles in filming, which kinda hooked me, but I didn't know, if/when it might come out, and every next vid I watched, I was kinda hoping and expecting to be that video about the roles. And now it's here, and it came out so nicely explained, really interesting and quite often hilarious! Thank you Matti for your time for sharing thoughts and experience.. oh uh..one more thing - it was that kind of video, I so much enjoyed, I had to start over, to see it more! Awesome! Thank you!
Great video Matti (& Mark)! I think this type of info is REALLY helpful for some of us videographers that haven't spent a lot of time with full-crews. Dope!
I work as an electric, working closely with the gaffer and the best boy. I've always wanted to be a DOP but to do that you have to take the camera route (camera Assistant, 1st AC, etc.) then eventually becoming a DOP. But I chose to learn lighting as that's more important, to know lighting. Now I work in IATSE 873 as an electric. Will I ever get up to working as a Gaffer and then DOP? NOPE... Not my thing anymore. I would much rather do freelance work and be a DOP that way, rather than in the union on big hollywood budgeted films and TV shows Or Commercials! I would love to shoot on commercials as well. Im from the GTA - If you are looking for help with lighting/camera -- Im your guy! Big budget or small budget - Heck, it doesnt even need to be a real shoot. Lets make a fake commercial just to get noticed :P
Hey, let me just say you guys effing rock dude. I’m an editor on these shows you guys light up and I’m always finding myself just in awe with the work you guys do. You don’t hear it enough, but let me just take this second and say what a great job you guys do! Lightings isn everything.
Sup fellow Union member, I'm in IATSE 492! I'm sorta in the same position but in the Grip department. Maybe one day i'll make it as a DOP on big sets but for now I enjoy being a grip and it pays the bill!
Steve Moore been through tons of tv shows, movies, youtube videos and im losing my mind already 😭 take it from me and avoid injuries as much as possible its soooooooo boring
Matti, you've turned me into a monster. I use to think my computer was just lowering the video resolution from 720 to 480, but now I automatically know when auto-focus is changing.
do you have to be Union in order to do all these small rolls. I'm coming from an illustration background and I really wanna get into set fabrication/ design or the props department things like that but I have yet to be able to find anything that is like that. Like I know the names of the positions but I can't seem to find where to find the job listings.
I be so down with mark channel he should also have a set of series about each department in depth like one be for all the roles on audio another be a editor but with an vlog
Matti love your vids man!!! Keep it up! I am a fimmaker but I only use phone and gimbal. You should try making a whole vlog with that setup! Myb you get inpiration for another great video!!!
Yes I know its 27 minutes and 57 seconds long... Sorry not sorry. Wanted you guys to hear all this good info!
WOW! just starting a coffe for that 27 minutes!
Yes sir definitely :)
People watch 30 minutes of junk on TV all the time, this is great!
Great info Matti!!!! Thanks for creating such great stuff!!!
It's all good info! I just hope you get a chance to fixed the sound in the new studio soon...
YES THE LONGER THE BETTER!! LOVE IT!!!

This was worth the whole 27 minutes. You just can't have enough info on this subject. Thanks for sharing, man.
Oh man, I love his inside perspective, a channel about the behind the scenes, the pre (and post) production process on film will be great to watch
Yeah, totally Mark! You got tons of knowledge that would definitely benefit a lot of future film-makers/UA-camrs out there. You never know what you might create out of a new youtube channel Mark!... Oh, and do you think I can borrow that one-wheel too Matti?...

Thank you so much for this Matti! I'm 19 years old and this video couldn't be better!

Thank you Matti! This video was so informative and helpful!
Dude!! Do it! Start a channel man, there is so much you can teach and there is so many people eager to learn too!
Yes! Have him start explaining positions, the skills to develop for those positions, and pieces of equipment to use on sets! That would be phenomenal!
Minutes passed like seconds, thank you, Matti! And, yes, Mark should definitely make a youtube channel 👍
Hey, that PA piece popping up again. It seems like such a great way to learn too, not to mention prove your work ethic.

I enjoyed the sound of the video, but I couldn't watch the constant focusing.
Thank you so much for this video!! There’s nothing like it on the internet.
Behind the scenes would be very cool
He should create a channel. BTS of commercial shoots would be DOPE!
That was a fun and interesting video. Thank you again for always sharing your expertise and helping other creators.
This is the 1DX Mark ii right? Why was the camera focus hunting?
What lens you are using since there's little bit of vignetting, or is it due ND-filter or lens hood?
When getting to media I thought I can only get to be a newscaster but you have opened my eyes to think broad. Thanks matti
BTS on commercial shoots would be interesting - I'd look forward to that
Fantastic video! Always wanted to know about these roles!!
Still watching this in 2021 and I am loving it I learn a lot thanks.
