I wish I'd never went to University to learn filmmaking, there were so many things that I learnt by being in the industry that University could never teach me. It felt like I was 3 years behind everyone else by the time I finished. Not that University wasn't helpful in teaching me a lot of film theory, I just wish that I jumped straight into the industry instead. As always great content, very insightful. :)
Taking WAY too long to realize that stories can be made stronger when you surround yourself with loving people who care about you and who can bring perspective to the work. The cliché phrase that is so true... teamwork makes the dream work. It may be scary, but let go of the reins, build your team, and then trust them!
Not many people can afford to take a year off let alone have a career that they can just stop for a year and expect to not have major issues getting going again upon trying to return. Given the direction change your channel has made over the past year or so as well as the personal changes you've had I'd say it's definitely for the better so enjoy what very few people have or can do! It also has absolutely nothing to do with being a "creator" and "creator burnout" it's simply just burnout! I'm a corporate analyst, I couldn't be any more burned out with the workload, the system, corporate America, the politics... it's all a bunch of bs that I keep working hard to move out of and I'd kill for a year break... even a month break. I take one week off and the following week back I have two weeks worth of work to get done in one week. 90+ hours working from 8am to 4am to catch up... If you can afford time off, any time off, take it and recharge!
Didn't you watch the video? Matti said he is taking a brake from youtube and focus on his career has a filmmaker. Not like just having a sabatic year or whatever. We all take break so now and then from activities like hobbies, gym, some sport club or even from other people.
He will be doing stuff outside UA-cam. As I understand more on the learning side of filmmaking without being distracted by the need to make UA-cam videos.
Matti, I don’t think you need to regret anything. You’ve grown as a person, as a filmmaker and it is a journey. You’re ready to go further now. I became a pro photographer in my late 30s after having a successful career doing something else for 20 years. And thanks to channels like yours I learned a lot and got confidence to go for it). And when I ask myself why I didn’t start sooner, well, because I wasn’t ready. Everything is as it’s meant to be.
I think it's 100% the right choice to take a year (or forever) off. I'm super impressed that you're walking away from it to do what sounds like more of a calling. We'll miss seeing you regularly but you'll still be making an impact from behind the camera.
Absolutely amazing to hear such great praise of the support team you have. Every high profile person has someone creating their media and managing their calendar etc. I wish more creators would include their support team with greater frequencies. It is a 'team' effort and yet rarely do the team members behind the lens get mentioned. Well done.
I appreciate the insights and advice this video has provided. I have been stuck in the " just work" for 40+ years. Thanks for posting. Best of luck to you and all in your future endeavors.
I have been a one band for a long time, and recently I worked on my first film set ever (10 mill budget I believe). It made me realize how much joy it was to see people in action who know more than me, to sit around and talk shop, and to see the creative eyes of other people and decision-making.
I got truely inspired! Respect for the choice you are making and hope you come back even stronger, looking forward to more of this honest, raw and very enjoyable content! Take care and enjoy your 'Time Off'!
I can see you got old and with that, experience and knowledge made you understand where the real value of the life is. Glad you can keep working in your own stuff and get away from your youtuber life, it was amazing to let us be part of this journey of yours. thank you for your hard work for us.
Great stuff. And I'll be here no matter how long you take. I got a say for me it's been extremely tough to find others. I live in a rural area I started later in life. Not like a lot later but still. There's so many shots that are in my head that require another person. I daydream of finding just one other person that we could take turns filming each other. Anyway always much love. His channels taught me so much and in recent years inspired me. Feel like you never know Maddie could be the next great director producer filmmaker. Or maybe just a very talented person on a great team. Have a great year.
Glad to see you came here to Japan! Been here since 1998! I camped and shot my most recent video in the Fuji Five Lakes area that was shown in the ending shots! I am no doubt joined by many others when I say that while we don’t want to see you go, we understand that everyone needs a break/reset in life, even/especially for the things we are passionate about or highly skilled at doing. No matter what it is, repetition gets old. We hope the break/rest is not a goodbye, and look forward to your return to uploading videos. In the meantime, those of us who aspire to reach your same level of quality have your extensive video library to watch/re-watch and learn from..!
Incredible video, great message as always, I'm personally so happy to be here and to be able to be on the receiving end of the amazing content that you've put out over the years and I can't thank you enough for the work that you've put in and the content that you've made.. I'm so grateful and hope that during the time off the channel you succeed in whichever thing that you're doing next and I pray for nothing but the best for you and everyone on the crew.. happy holiday Matti
If you can afford to do it, taking a year off is an idea worth exploring. Everyone who is a full time creator knows of UA-cam fatigue/burn out. Maybe you’ll come back stronger. Regardless enjoy the time.
This really spoke to me. Thank you for posting this. I am not sure if you will even see this, but, I am currently in the literal commercial grind as you stated. I make commercials and a variety of other videos for a living. My goal, is in fact, to make the most meaningful and well produced feature films humanly possible. I also, am trying so hard to connect wtih other like-minded filmmakers who want to do the same. My channel currently has no videos and no art work because I deleted it all. I spent several years trying to figure out what I wanted to do on UA-cam and recently cleared it all hoping I would find a good point to refresh my focus. (Why my channel has nothing but also over 1,000 subscribers.) I am based out of the Denver CO area and there isn't much of a film culture or industry here at all. However, I also won't move my family out of state because they really should be close to the people who love them. I am just grinding away trying to build a cohesive film industry and culture here. One that is positive, uplifting, and friendly for those who have families and priorities beyond making money. Anyway, thank you for all you've done here and for being open and honest about where you're at in your career. I have no doubts that you and your crew will make some amazing films. You have to. God Bless.
I quit a 20 year career selling medical devices, to take a break from work and live in an rv and travel the USA and canada. That has turned into a 4 year break and starting a youtube channel about RV life full time. We have 50 subs now and trying to decide if i am going back to the regular corporate grind or sticking with youtube and go from a hobby to a business. Good luck Matti. Fellow Canadian. Larry
I would love to do a project with you someday dude. In any case you are following your path and where it leads you will inspire, grow, and be able to grab life by the sack and go!!
Thinking that youtube could replace filmmaking.... because when you make a film like you said you work with so many creatives and take it to another level. So this year im leveling up. No more Youtubing im applying for grants and getting a team together so we can film a full lenght documentary. Not something that people will forget in 5 minutes, but something that takes investigation, planning and deep work.
Mattii hate to see you go, I've learned so much from you, but I get it. Maybe you can drop a vid from time to time to let us know how you're doing, just a thought. I wish you the best this next year in whatever your destiny takes you.
If this sibatical is what will make you happy, do it. You won’t regret seeing your kids grow every day in front of your eyes. You worked hard and you deserve it.
Momentum is a big deal in any business. You might kill it taking a year off, or at least parts of it. That being said your experience doesn't go away and you can redefine yourself and rebuild.
Hey Matti - what happened to the workshop or the training institute thingy you wanted to start for film-making. Never heard anything after signing for that. Is that shelved for now ?
Enjoy the time off, and great to show appreciation and gratitude for the people that support your career and make it possible. Don't give Chris the channel though haha
Enjoy the time off Matti. Think of it as a "Sabbatical"..no different than what College Professors do...wish we all had something like this (feel like the world might actually be a better place if people had to time grow and experience life at different points of their lives).
The most successful filmmakers in the world are the anti-thesis of the one man show and have done far fewer projects that your average prolific UA-camr.
The best film making tells more than a story . It attempts to add to the conversation of human destiny. Today where anyone stands on Gaza is a milestone in whether the future is a return to barbarism and eventual human extinction or whether the world turns a page and enters a brave new world of discovery. Film is crucial to this journey . Humanity has always sought its reflection as a compass to the future. Be there on the right side of history or be there by ones conspicuous absence... on the wrong side of history. Be interesting to see what Gaza would 'make of you' as opposed to endless vids of ''stuff''. Might save you from becoming a self indulgent narcissist with his head up his arse... just a thought about us all....me included btw
You are great at getting shots, and making things look cinematic, but im confused on what this video even is? what are all these shot's of you walking around and staring off into the distance even for? there's no content substantial enough in the story to warrant these shots. Like if you break it down, the story goes like this. Intro: My biggest regret, also I'm taking a year off Act one part one: off to the mountains, as I ponder my career, my biggest mistake was thinking I could do it all Interlude: We're on a mountain, not sure which one but it's cool, and louder than the city Act one part 2: being a UA-camr gives the idea that a true filmmaker is a one man Crew, because gear is easy and accessible, having a Tyler is valuable for logistics Interlude: shoutout to Tyler for being a logistical genius/very handsome and single. Act one part 3: Chris is manning the gimbal, and Epidemic Sound has planned the trip Ad Break Interlude: Shoutout to Chris for the great gimbal shots Act one part 4: misconceptions about how UA-camrs get all the credit because the crew is often behind the scenes, and this is the big mistake as outlined previously Conclusion to act one: I was a worse filmmaker because I didn't have as much experience working with other professionals as a team, and I want to change that Act two part one?: Chris's & Tylers thoughts on taking a year off, Matti jokes he will make honest product reviews Interlude: Chris got good sleep, Matti found an orange tree Conclusion to act two: Don't follow expectations, set your intentions, and execute. Do you see how there's no real story here? I know it's just a video about your thoughts, but I still think it could be told better. I'm really not trying to hate, I'm trying to give you honest criticism, if I tried to be nice as well this comment would be a mile long. I believe, based on this video, you should scale down your production value, and tell a good story that holds up. I see it like this: A filmmaker is an author of cinema, and good authors don't obsess over book covers, fonts, styling, etc. The story always comes first, not even the content of the story itself, but how it's told. If the story is good written on a napkin, it will be good in a beautifully crafted novel. You have practiced, and achieved, a great level of craftsmanship, but at the cost of storytelling, which is the backbone of filmmaking. So to end off my long as heck comment, take the year off, and learn to tell a story. Study, and test yourself. Take a story, and tell it your way, and then tell it again, but differently, and again. Then compare, contrast, and recompile, experiment with new editors, new writers, production quality. All these things can enhance a story, depending on the story, the 'best' camera may not be the best camera for that story. Does this make sense? idk Have a good year!
Would be nice to be able to afford people to "support" my creative efforts, but I dont have a million subscribers. So,.........the grind is real. No way to get away from that. I'm glad he is able to pay people to help him, and I realize he did not always have that, so I wish him well.
Whats a regret you have in your filmmaking career?
I wish I'd never went to University to learn filmmaking, there were so many things that I learnt by being in the industry that University could never teach me. Not that University wasn't helpful in teaching me a lot of film theory, I just wish that I jumped straight into the industry instead. As always great content, very insightful. :)
Not starting sooner, I held off for years thinking I wasn't good enough but that was silly because you can't get good without getting started.
Taking WAY too long to realize that stories can be made stronger when you surround yourself with loving people who care about you and who can bring perspective to the work. The cliché phrase that is so true... teamwork makes the dream work. It may be scary, but let go of the reins, build your team, and then trust them!
Being too picky and too much of a perfectionist, ending up not releasing videos... Changing this mentality going into 2024 tho!
Thinking I need an Arri to make a film.
Always better together!
Always 😊
Not many people can afford to take a year off let alone have a career that they can just stop for a year and expect to not have major issues getting going again upon trying to return. Went from quitting UA-cam to taking a year off real quick
Thank you so much Matti!! You’ve been a massive inspiration to me! You deserve time off to explore… but also can’t wait to see you back someday!
If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far go together. Thankyou Matti for this beautiful vid.
First subscribed to your Travel Feels channel long ago and now this seems like a full circle moment. Love ha Matti !!
Absolutely amazing to hear such great praise of the support team you have. Good luck Matti. Wishing you and your family good adventures , safe and have grown spirits. Thanks for all the idea's.

Im glad to know you're taking a year off. And not necessarily quitting! You've said you're quitting, and im glad its just a good long break!
I have been a one band for a long time, and recently I worked on my first film set ever (10 mill budget I believe). It made me realize how much joy it was to see people in action who know more than me, to sit around and talk shop, and to see the creative eyes of other people and decision-making.

Oh man this video was epic! Y’all are so great and Japan is beautiful!
i dont think you should quite Matti you're a great vlogger and film maker and were learning from you so I hope you continue.
My biggest regret was not changing your password when you gave me the channel ;) Respect Matti - excited for the next step in your career.
Incredible video, great message as always, I'm personally so happy to be here and to be able to be on the receiving end of the amazing content that you've put out over the years and I can't thank you enough for the work that you've put in and the content that you've made.. "Young Bachelor Tyler" 😂😂
Good Luck on your new adventure Matti
for all the halation goodness. loving the series so far!
Love Japan, been there three times. And Tokyo is pretty wild. Need to go back.
Hey Matti, what with the Mullet that has been developing over that last few videos i have seen, kind of a 80s throw back. Larry
Biggest thanks for your inspo mate. 🤙😎
If you can afford to do it, taking a year off is an idea worth exploring. Everyone who is a full time creator knows of UA-cam fatigue/burn out. Maybe you’ll come back stronger. Regardless enjoy the time.
Awesome video brother! I appreciate your vulnerability and oppeness to share... (The grade looks killer on this BTW!)
We will miss you Matti, enjoy your time off!

Thanks Matti.. Please don't leave me...

I would love to do a project with you someday dude. In any case you are following your path and where it leads you will inspire, grow, and be able to grab life by the sack and go!!
We love Tyler! ❤
Great video as always I hope that you get everything you’re looking for within the next year and then you’ll be back

I can't wait for the "How My UA-cam Sabbatical is Going" video to appear on this channel by mid-January
Videos are great!! Hope you liked Japan and come back!
Matti, which of your lut did you use for this? I’m LOVING the colors?
Wishing you all the best and can’t wait to see you next year. PS: No Peter McKinnon??
Mattii hate to see you go, I've learned so much from you, but I get it. Maybe you can drop a vid from time to time to let us know how you're doing, just a thought. I wish you the best this next year in whatever your destiny takes you.

love your color man...beautiful coloured
Yes manager Tyler!!
I have projects coming out in theatres and a past completion history and am union and it’s still hard to find gigs currently
Although these last few videos are fun and uplifting they are also so sad knowing you're quitting UA-cam 😢 You will be missed for sure
if it is the last time Matti - it's been a pleasure being inspired my friend :D
We all love Tyler.. I his fans... IG/Tube fan :)Team work is the secret sauce.
Tyler is pretty Awesome!
lollllll - the bell 💀💀💀
It’s important to read the text to get the full context haha
So lovely way to show us for quitting!!❤😂🎉😊
You’re like that one employee that keeps announcing they’re quitting.. lol.
Thanks for sharing it. ✌️
What mist filter did you use to film this?
Love it!!!
Dehancer for the win
4:33 wow what camera is this?
Momentum is a big deal in any business. You might kill it taking a year off, or at least parts of it. That being said your experience doesn't go away and you can redefine yourself and rebuild.
anyone else thinking there might not be an episode 3?
Perhaps Matti will drop Part 3 in 2025?
Aw man that travel feels intro hit a little different this time.
Hey Matti - what happened to the workshop or the training institute thingy you wanted to start for film-making. Never heard anything after signing for that. Is that shelved for now ?
biggest regret: waiting for everything to be perfect
I’m miss your videos man. You definitely talk me a lot.
motion graphics are just 🤌🤌
film making journey? what films have you shot?
Enjoy your time off! Try new things, meet new people! Hopefully see you in 2025!
Enjoy the time off, and great to show appreciation and gratitude for the people that support your career and make it possible. Don't give Chris the channel though haha
I don't think this man is Quitting UA-cam. He will be back in less than a week.
I took some time off, and now it's been 3 years almost.
nice advise
Greetings from California Matti
We'll miss you Mattih but I support your decision of quitting UA-cam for now.. So many beautiful things will happen to you at some point! Guaranteed!
Where is the link in the description to purchase a Tyler? 😂
Enjoy the time off Matti. Think of it as a "Sabbatical"..no different than what College Professors do...wish we all had something like this (feel like the world might actually be a better place if people had to time grow and experience life at different points of their lives).
Is this the last video? I thought there was one more lol
I took a year of school. Then became a full time videographer and never went back to class
"So long and thanks for all the...vids."
Gotta be that hair style
The most successful filmmakers in the world are the anti-thesis of the one man show and have done far fewer projects that your average prolific UA-camr.
I still cannot believe that u want to quit youtube. I totally get all your reasons and support it. But i am really sad about it.
The best film making tells more than a story . It attempts to add to the conversation of human destiny. Trying to set tyler up off of youtube is hilar 😂❤
You are great at getting shots, and making things look cinematic, but im confused on what this video even is? what are all these shot's of you walking around and staring off into the distance even for? there's no content substantial enough in the story to warrant these shots. Like if you break it down, the story goes like this.
Intro: My biggest regret, also I'm taking a year off
Act one part one: off to the mountains, as I ponder my career, my biggest mistake was thinking I could do it all
Interlude: We're on a mountain, not sure which one but it's cool, and louder than the city
Act one part 2: being a UA-camr gives the idea that a true filmmaker is a one man Crew, because gear is easy and accessible, having a Tyler is valuable for logistics
Interlude: shoutout to Tyler for being a logistical genius/very handsome and single.
Act one part 3: Chris is manning the gimbal, and Epidemic Sound has planned the trip
Ad Break
Interlude: Shoutout to Chris for the great gimbal shots
Act one part 4: misconceptions about how UA-camrs get all the credit because the crew is often behind the scenes, and this is the big mistake as outlined previously
Conclusion to act one: I was a worse filmmaker because I didn't have as much experience working with other professionals as a team, and I want to change that
Act two part one?: Chris's & Tylers thoughts on taking a year off, Matti jokes he will make honest product reviews
Interlude: Chris got good sleep, Matti found an orange tree
Conclusion to act two: Don't follow expectations, set your intentions, and execute.
Then compare, contrast, and recompile, experiment with new editors, new writers, production quality. All these things can enhance a story, depending on the story, the 'best' camera may not be the best camera for that story. Does this make sense? idk Have a good year!
Love your videos, gonna start my channel because of you! Like for supporting creators!
you don't come to korea ?
great share, friend.
Awesome. Here's to the best year of your life sitting right in front of you. -
come to korea plz
Ya this guys are video creators not a filmmakers ….this is a big difference they making good video content for you tube that’s all …
❤
I would take a year off… but I don’t want my condo to be foreclosed on. #realworldprobs
Would be nice to be able to afford people to "support" my creative efforts, but I dont have a million subscribers. So,.........the grind is real. No way to get away from that. I'm glad he is able to pay people to help him, and I realize he did not always have that, so I wish him well.
9:05 Matti .. i think you need to educate Tyler, that Finland isn't Scandinavia ....
