  • Here's how to replace the inside door handle found on many Chevrolet and GMC SUVs and trucks. The video here shows replacing a 1999 Suburban's passengers handle.
I purchased the replacement handle in the video from Amazon for $13 with free shipping. amzn.to/2yIDxO4
    You only need...
    Two flat head screwdrivers
#12 1 in sheet metal screw
Drill with a 1/8 to 3/16 dill bit
    Pliers (Long-nose would be best)
Hex head screwdriver or ratchet (for the two screws in the arm rest. some models use Phillip heads instead.)
Disclaimer: All products used in this video were purchased by me and all video content is my own and has been edited by me, Matthew Fox.

Thank you so much. I used this video to repair my 97 GMC two years ago and spent an hour searching for this same one today to fix the drivers side. This is the best video ever and I found it again. I will save it this time for future repairs.

This is the BEST video on UA-cam. I was apprehensive about tearing my door off but I watched this video, ordered the part from eBay for $8.95 + shipping, then watched this two more times and tackled it. The whole process took less than 30 minutes and then it didn't work. But I discovered I had inadvertently locked the door, unlocked it and then opened and closed it about 10 times in shock and amazement. Mine was the driver side and it is a 1997 so I will watch this again in 21 years and replace it again. Many thanks. I especially like how you say "grommet" which is a little different than we say it in Texas.

Lifesaver. I started feeling sorry for myself, because my Suburban was outside, and then, when I went back to look at the video again, I realized the friendly fixer was out in the snow. I ordered my '97 truck cheaply, and it has a manual window crank.

This video was spot on! I got mine done in less than 1 hour. That included a run to the auto store for the courtesy bulb. Only detail I would add is I used a 7mm socket for the arm rest at 1:07. I used a 1.5 inch sheet metal screen that was 5/16ths to replace the drilled out pop rivet. That's what I had laying around. 10 out of 10 video

In my younger years as a body and fender repairman I removed many inner door panels and had a tool specifically designed to get under the perimeter door panel clips. Couldn't find it to replace the door handle today. I found that a claw hammer works very well for this especially on the front ones. Push the claw in and straddle the clip then lever it out just as you would a nail.

Thank you for posting this. It was just what I need to fix my door handle on my 99 GMC Suburban C1500 SLT. Only difference was it was my driver's side and instead of a plastic grommet there was a metal rivet. Again, thank you!

FYI for anyone doing this: the correct replacement rivet(it's not a grommet) for this repair is: an aluminum 3/16" x 1/4" rivet.

I used a dandelion digger with some of the metal shaft wrapped in cloth to carefully pop the plastic clips out and saved all of them going slowly and getting underneath each clip. After popping out the window/lock/mirror/speaker and disconnecting just the speaker I set the door panel on a 2 step stepladder located just under the door and it rested just fine so I didn't have to disconnect all of the electronics. I used a 5/8 inch #12 sheet metal screw for the replacement. Great video, very helpful!

Awesome video. I fixed mine in under an hour for the cost of the $15.95 part. The shop wanted $150. I did break one of the brackets that hold the pins in, but there are about eight of them, so the panel still fits tightly.

Thank you for creating this video; it really helped me replace the handle on my vehicle. I noticed while installing the new handle assembly that the rivet left a large hole behind in the door's sheet metal, whereas the replacement assembly didn't seem to have enough room for the size of screw needed to fit the rivet's hole. I got around this by drilling/installing a smaller screw in the upper-right region of the assembly (on a driver's side door -- the mirror opposite of the passenger-side assembly in the video). Thanks again for the informative video!

    • @snowyrapids
      @snowyrapids 8 років тому +1

I also noticed on my vehicle that the linkage for the window was bent and rubbing against the rod running from the door handle to the latch, requiring a harder pull on the handle in order to open the door. Perhaps this led to the handle splitting in two. After bending the window linkage back into place, the door opens easily without much effort on the handle.

It's amazing to me that they wouldn't build the small metal linkage slightly stronger to prevent this VERY common problem. Who knows though. They might build it purposefully weak at that point to protect the other door linkages that might be harder to replace. Thanks for the video, saved me some time figuring it out.
