If you setup the invisible camera (with the camera mounted in their suggested location) and the trailers length, width, etc. You will get the trailer guidance lines, they also articulate like the truck when backing up.
I mounted mine where they recommended on my 2024. You don't get the distortion that you're getting. And you get the back-up guides (you have to set them up).
Outstanding video. I do use the receiver for bicycles, and thus far, it works fine for its intended purpose. Very creative thinking on your part, and if it works for you, it most likely will work for others. Thank you for sharing.
After 5 years of GM offering this camera set up, it would be nice to see some changes. 1 a smaller camera. 2 a set up that will work with a 5th wheel trailer. 3 a reduction in price. Nice video.
Now that you have the Sierra camera installed are you removing your backup camera? Did you have side cameras and if so did you remove those side cameras?
I left the Furrion "sharkfin" mount since it covers a hole. I figure next owner might think differently and want it. No side cameras on my travel trailer.
Great video as always. Curious when you're driving down the road with the camera view on, are you also able to get the TPMS view to the right of the camera view or does the camera take up the entire screen? This was an issue on my 2021 Chevy 2500 HD so curious if they fixed this for the new 2024 trucks since mine should be here soon.
Great question. Unfortunately not. It doesn't take up full width of 13.4" screen, but it centers on the screen and blocks the sides essentially. That'd be nice if they allowed both to show simultaneously.
My GM trailer backup camera does have the guidelines and it does automatically default to the trailer camera when I place my truck into reverse. I mounted the camera in the proper place in the middle of the trailer. I have a 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Denali and a 2018 Rockwood Minilite 2511s
Great feedback! Thank you. I am learning that all the "smart" trailer features associated with the camera require the proper position including the guides.
That's a great dash cam, I have the same one. As far as the lights pulsating, when can turn that off in your trailer settings. At least that's what I was told, I haven't tried it.
I concealed my wire through the underbelly of my trailer then punched through the wall in the back and brought the wire up with a wire snake. Looks OEM , and clean. I’m like you , I’m OCD I don’t want extra wiring and clutter it drives me nuts
I have a Sierra 1500 on order, but haven't been able to find a lot of info on the camera. Thanks for the informational video. I did order it with the trailer app and a backup camera for my trailer. Do you know where the side view cameras are located on the truck? I wanted to order it with tow mirrors like on your HD, but it would only let me pick between the trailer app/camera or tow mirrors. I couldn't get both on the 1500. Do you know if the side camera's are actually in the mirrors? That is the only reason I could figure they wouldn't let you have both. Common sense would dictate if you are ordering the trailer equipment you would want tow mirrors, but GM doesn't allow that for some reason. Also, if you have the camera view up while towing, what do you use for navigation and where is it displayed? On my 2018 I have a separate monitor for my backup camera's and map on the screen. If the cameras take up the whole screen, my map wouldn't be there. Thanks!
Thank you. On the HDs the side cams/360 are in bottom of mirror base (right where it attaches to truck). I haven't seen the 1500 tow mirrors up close or in person, but they look awfully similar to the standard 2500/3500 HD mirrors. You may have nailed it on the head mention that conflict between the tow mirrors and 360/side cam. Maybe the tow mirrors on a 1500 are like the base mirrors on the HD Pro trim (work truck). Just a guess...I'm not as well-versed on the 1/2 tons so appogies I couldn't be more helpful there. I can say the tow mirrors are really good on visibility though. I usually don't even pull mine out all the way and have plenty of visibility.
I didn't get the GM camera because you're unable to display the image on the digital mirror. I don't like to have the main display taken up by the video feed. The digital mirror is useless when towing; why not have the option to display the RV video there?
I’m in the same boat. Moved my Furrion system to my new RV and bought a new Silverado 2500HD to pull it. The PWN adapter works great and I get virtually no video lag and dropouts are extremely rare; only one in 500 miles so far. I have the large 7” Furrion monitor and position it right under the rear view mirror/monitor so I get a full rear camera view below the rearview mirrtcanera that’s watching front of trailer and right above the dual side view camera image on the infotainment system. Powering the Furrion monitor with a 12V converter off Amazon. I Like the invisible trailer ability of the GM camera, but still on the fence due to price and already having 3 full screens of info at my disposal which shows me everything I need.
Really great point. My truck has the regular mirror, but I totally agree if you have a digital mirror then the trailer camera should default to that digital mirror while towing...that's a no brainer and it would be so convenient and useful. I think RAM is doing that circa 2023ish from what I gather.
I really wish GM or a third party would come up with a wireless system that sends to a receiver you can plug into the camera jack on the bumper. That way I don’t have to run all that cable and would still see on my stock Sierra display.
What GM item # is this unit? My information is that the GM camera for my truck is prone to issues that seem to be unresolved over many temps by my dealer with other customers, according to my service adviser.
On my 2024 the part is GM Part 85118298. There's a slightly different one for previous 23 and prior models. My understanding is they look identical, but something is different on the camera internally so they aren't interchangeable. Mine has worked flawlessly though...it solves the problem for me and gives a little more visibility out back when I'm reversing.
Having a 5th wheel, I really dislike that video connector being at the bumper instead of in the bed. I'm sure TT owners are happy where it is, but a flat 4 in the bed?? That just seems worthless.to me.
Great point. That is a con for fifth wheel owners. I think they put the 4-pin in bed for slide in truck campers. I saw a gentlemen switch the bed/bumper connectors and make it the reverse...time consuming probably.
I switched mine, wasn't too bad. Look it up on the forums and you can find the part numbers for the extension cables. I think it was pasternack brand cables.
I think you do a good video I think you are articulate and provide good information, I mounted mine on the high location and run the wire down the ladder and under the trailer up to the front as I do not have a neatness compulsion, I look forward to checking some more of your videos
@@josephguttieri5427 not yet. I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to take the trailer out for a dedicated slow stroll, but I've tried doing it on the last four trips, which of course it only calibrates under 31 mph, but I'll let it calibrate the entire drive, hoping that the times I'm under 31 mph might calibrate. But so far no luck...no errors, just no completion. I wonder if it has something to do with the odd and low location of my camera, but sometime I might try to take it out and do a dedicated slower drive to see if can coerce it.
With the camera mounted up high, wouldn't that allow you to point the camera downward to the point where you can clearly see the corners of the trailer? Because my first thought was, when he installed it down low, all he ended up with was an expensive backup camera (sans guide lines).
@@AdventureRocks as I mentioned above, I'd think that if the camera was mounted up high that would allow you to point the camera downward to the point where you can clearly see the corners of the trailer. My first thought was, with it installed so low, you ended up with an expensive backup camera (sans guide lines). Also, if the skin of the trailer is ferrous metal AND you left a loop of cable at the back, that might allow you to relocate the camera, even temporarily, while you used a bike rack, etc. Last point is a question for you. I have the same trailer camera accommodations on my 2024 Silverado. As shown on the plug caps, they allow for an interior camera and/or an exterior camera (backup, invisible trailer functions, etc.). I have a large enclosed trailer that I use for a few things, including hauling motorcycles. Does the kit allow for the addition of a second plug and camera or would you have to buy TWO of those expensive camera kits in order to have both an inside and outside cameras?
Great video, thank you! If you’re in the minority then count me in because we could be twins with regard to wanting accessories to be reversible with no indication anything was ever installed (drilling holes, exposed cables) and dash clutter. I already had a furrion on my existing trailer so I ended up getting that ugly pigtail to fix the pwm problem but it drives me insane that a) I have to plug in another accessory to make what should be plug and play work properly and b) it adds just enough extra slack to the trailer wiring that I’m always afraid it’s going to snag. Furrion should really be able to build the compatibility into the camera. Alas, I didn’t get any points on my account when I bought the truck but maybe it’s because it is my first gmc and I didn’t have the rewards account before, but anyway after seeing this I’ll definitely be keeping track so as soon as it gets to attainable territory I’m all in on doing this too.
I know that if you put it in the recommended location, the lines will appear, but if you put it in the location he suggests in this video, and do all the recommended setup procedure , do the lines appear ? Does anyone know? I hesitate mounting the camera on the proper location on a brand new trailer.
Great question. Still to be determined...I've tried several times to callibrate while on trips and no success yet. The callibration is very specific stating that you have to be in a straight line...under 31mph, etc. Even though I let it run continuously for hours on trips the speed is over 31mph majority of trip so I suspect that is part to blame. But, I hope to find time to just find a straight road under 31mph and see if I get any success with my lower positioning. No errors, just no success yet on the callibration. Just gotta carve out some time soon hopefully.
I agree 100% with not being able to use the camera while having the truck in reverse. If I had known this in the beginning, I never would’ve spent the money on it. Really a useless tool since it can’t be used while backing up your trailer. We are going back to the Furrion camera with the ugly pigtail.
@@sallypellegra3614 do you have a 24? Mine is hidden under another page if cameras with an obscure > arrow. I wish it was automatic though when trailer is connected.
Again my experience differs from yours. My after market cameras come with a stand alone monitor stuck on my windshield . Yes an ugly wire on monitor. Cameras are magnet mount, wireless and powered by solar. Beautiful pictures. One outside my car trailer one inside. Inside camera has to be charged daily. Third camera can be attached in either side or at door or wherever metal is available. Cheap, less than $200.00 no wires less hassle. Use on dump trailer too. Five minutes and I can switch over cameras. Monitor remains in truck cab. A lot more differences.
