This is the best, most logical and practical approach - really like putting the cable under the trailer - looks awful anywhere else. The learning tips at the end are particularly helpful.
One warning that people should know about is the width limit. It's not covered in the manual & I haven't seen it anywhere else either. The manual says to put the width of your trailer in the app. Which width should you put in? As in my case, I have a 7' wide utility trailer with tires & fenders outside the box. So I ran a tape measure between the wheels & best I could tell it was 103", if I remember right. So that's the number I used, and I could not get the transparent trailer to work at all. It was driving me crazy. I called GMC, talked to the dealership & no one had any answers. So, at some point, I tried changing the width to that of the box, which was 86". Suddenly, transparent trailer started working. So I started playing with the dimensions. 100" worked, 102" worked, then 103" didn't. So, surprise, the limit is 102", which I ran it at for a few weeks. While I liked it well enough, I had some of the view complaints you were talking about. I changed the width of the trailer to the box width of 86", and that mostly fixed my issues with the view. Again, I'm not sure which width GM actually wants you to put in, but for viewing purposes, the box width was much better for me. So my wheels & fenders are just going be outside my measurements. Anyway. If you can't get your transparent trailer to work, make sure your width is 102" or less!
This is a super useful video! First one I've seen on this product. I'd definitely consider this for my smaller cargo trailer. I get what you are saying about the ultimate usefulness of the transparent feature but more info available is always better, especially for longer trips. As always thanks for posting!
Killer video! My camera works on and off on its own and the clowns at the dealership don’t know why. The calibration portion of this video was awesome, thx.
H thanks from the land down under. I just bought a Silverado 2500 HD and have bought a camera to fit to my caravan or “trailer” as you guys call it. This video has made me very confident about tackling this job tomorrow, as did the tip in the comments about connection sequence. Thanks
Best and most useful information I've seen on this so far. I'll be installing on a 40' 5th Wheel Toy Hauler. The other hack I'll need to implement is swapping the camera connections from the bumpter to the be in my 2024 GMC 3500HD . I still can't figure out why they have a flat 4 in the bed. Thanks again Don. Good stuff.
I started at the top then worked my way down the back interior wall down to the bottom and fed the harness through the under belly all the way to the front
I'm picking up a new AT4 on Tuesday and I ordered this rear camera kit for use on my 24" enclosed car hauler. Not sure I'll do the pass through view with the rear ramp on the trailer but it's a fantastic option. Great timing on the video and great content.
Mount the camera in the middle of the ramp. Turn the camera over in the mount, remove both screws, and then turn the camera over. Run the cable straight down using the adhesive cable tie pads. Leave a little slack in cable at the ramp hinge line. Secure under the trailer all the way to the front. You should have plenty of cable to make the run.
I have a gooseneck horse trailer with a ramp and doors on the back. Camera will have to attach to the ramp and Running the cable under the trailer will be the only option, so thanks for showing that.
Quick tip: the truck must be off, and THEN plug in the trailer first, then plug in the rear camera second, then plug in the interior camera. The trailer plug must be plugged into the bumper 7 pin plug to work with the camera/cameras. We use this on our 40’ living quarters 4 horse trailer, I couldnt understand why it worked sometimes and not others. If the truck was running when plugging in the computer can’t find the cameras. If the truck is off, then plug in the 7 pin, then the rear, then the interior, then start the truck, it works. And no the invisible camera feature doesn’t work on a gooseneck trailer of any size. But still outstanding rear camera and interior camera. Give yourself plenty of pigtail or it will rip out when you make a turn.
Why doesn't the invisible camera feature work with a goose neck? I want to put this on my 41' with wheel with a reese goose pin box on my 24 gmc sierra 3500
Hi there. Thanks for the video. New 3500 Silverado. Doesn't support my Furrion camera. Question, how is it holding up with just the adhesive holding the camera on? Thank you.
Nice work. been debating on the camera for a while but I think I'm gonna pull the trigger. Plan on using it on my 24' boat so I have to come up with a quick on and off set up.
I am curious to know how the rear camera would work hauling a boat. One can’t really mount the camera centered on the motor and camera must be removable or the cable wraps up back to the transom.
When in this view and you use the turn signals, when the turn signals cancel, what view does you screen return to? The Invisible camera view? I have a 2023 Silverado.
Are the reverse guidelines available if you install the camera at the top of the trailer? I'm OK with losing transparent view but would like the guidelines. A rear door blocks placement in the recommended zone
Hello Don - Are there any other options out there that would work with my 2024 GMC Sierra Denali 2500? Unfortunately, my travel trailer is 35’ long. Is there any wireless options that would work? Thank you
I see several people have asked how this system would work if you mounted at the top of the trailer. Do you still get the lines when backing? I would like to mount it at the top of my 32' in the factory camera location. Thanks for the info ahead of time.
Thanks once again for posting the video. Did you end up using the clear adhesive film to secure the camera bracket or double sided tape? Lastly, would you recommend drilling and using stainless steel screws as another mean to prevent it from dismounting? Much appreciated Sir!
Great video., I'd really like a follow up comment if you don't mind.. You installed it with the adhesives. because you didn't want to do a permanent install. How's that worked out? I'd like to get one of these for my travel trailer but I would have to take out the refrigerator to try to do a permanent install.. Really curious to find out how The adhesive mounts held up thank you. keep making great videos.
Hi there, the best I can tell you is that the adhesive is still there and holding. I am parked at a lot that I am renting and the unit has been parked for a year now and the adhesive sections are shaded. My climate is pretty dry and we have hot summers and very cold winters but so far the included adhesive seems to do the trick. Even the adhesive for the cables
Had a question. Installed the camera and have it working. Noticed with the rear camera view when I use a turn signal that after I turn the camera view goes off and I have to turn it back on. Do you have this issue? Possible fix for this. Thanks. Your instruction to "fool" the truck helped. My trailer is about 1 foot to long and the trick worked great.
Did it stick through the winter. With original sticky pad. And still on. Also knowing what u know now would you have put it up high? Fo possibly better visibility. I have a 42 ft 5th wheel. Not sure to put it low or high will be first year towing that big. I have towed and backed up 16 ft landscape trailers
@@Donslife Just checking, still holding? Getting ready to mount mine (definitely don't want to drill holes); wondering if the supplied double-sided tape is good for the long haul or perhaps 3M double-sided?

@donslife hello and great video. I have a 2020 Silverado 2500 HD High Country. I want to install this on an enclosed 7x14 trailer. I also want to install the camera for inside the trailer as well but I cannot find the camera or part number. Do you happen to know which camera I would need for inside trailer? Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks for this info. Chevrolet calls it “special features“. Since this is a toy hauler, I prefer to mount on top of camper. Anyway of knowing if parking assist will work?
I am finally getting ready to install mine. Bought mine from someone I got everything but can't find double sided tape. What was the kind that came with it? Or something else you might recommend. Thanks
I’d like to just add a camera to the rear to be and mount it under the rear bumper. I do towing and don’t want to have a separate monitor to view under the towing boom. So i was thinking about maybe finding a camera that can be plugged into the exterior camera ports on the bumper like you did. Can you help me with this?
I've got pretty much the same truck except it's a diesel denali, and I have a camper that is 32 feet long (37 including the hitch) which has the camera prep package, but I'm not sure which camera to buy or how it eventually hooks up to my truck, because truck seems to just have the normal round plug, no extra plugs from the trailer
Hey!!! Your video seems to be the ONLY one that I can find on UA-cam for what I need, your install was seamless. I have a 2024 High Country and hauling a 2021 Grand Design Reflection 33ft 5th wheel. Not interested in running with the Invisible Trailer mode. We've installed the camera on the back at the top (there's a spot there for it). All the wires have been run - turn off truck, plug in the trailer to truck, start the truck and all I get is the hourglass -- nothing happens, it does not see the camera at all -- dealership is not helpful, manual says nothing -- I'm hoping you have some insight on what we can try next!!! TIA -- love ALL your videos btw.
I googled and this popped up : If the Video Processing Control Module is not calibrated, it will display an hour-glass icon on the infotainment screen. Once calibration is attained, the hourglass will automatically disappear. Also there is a TSB related to some camera issues : static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2023/MC-10234186-0001.pdf
Thank you so much!!!! My truck is an early 2024 model so hopefully one of these is the solution. I just had my trailer module changed, so it may have something to do with that. If not, then I guess it needs to go to a dealer for diagnostics. I'm hoping to head south next week and because I travel alone, a backup camera will make getting into spaces easier. @@Donslife
Thank you for this video. I'm going to be installing the camera on my trailer soon. It finally came in after being on backorder for 3 months. Have you tried the camera with your spare tire on the rear of the trailer? Does the spare tire interfere with the camera's view? I'm not really interested in the transparent trailer feature, but want to have the rear view.
Yes the spare tire was obstructing the view a little, but only because the transparent trailer required a specific mounting height. I had to move it to the side a little further. However since that feature isn’t important to you, I feel it would be great located higher up as a rear camera
@@Donslife were you able to use the original sticky pad when you moved or use some thing else. I want to try mine in different locations to see how I like it
@@Donslife After watching your video. I did a research for trailer cameras and found that GM has a wireless camera so was curious. If you looked into one GM wireless and went with cord one instead.
What year is your truck? I have a 2020 z71 ltz and I can’t seem to get the same options like the jack knife warning and the back up guidelines.. dealership really knows nothing, just had an update done there and still not given the options..
I may have missed it, but was the link for the camera up? Thanks for sharing and looks like a solid investment to have installed on a trailer/boat. Much appreciated once again!
Have you tried the transparent towing on your Escalade? I set it up and all other camera features work but I cant find the option for transparent trailer on the Escalade infotainment system. Thanks
Very well done video. Just received this camera and looking at the install. How is the tape working to keep the camera in place? I do not want to drill holes in the back of my camper and looking a maybe using Velcro for the mounting. What are your (or others) thoughts on going that route for the mounting on the trailer? Thanks
I won’t tell the camera that you lied about your inches😂 You have to drive in a straight line for several minutes to calibrate? It’s a good thing you live in Saskatchewan.😂 This looks like a handy product, if my dad updates his Sierra, I know I’m definitely going to be getting this for him to reduce the friction between him and my mom when trying to park their trailer😂
The system includes a camera with integrated 60-foot (18-meter) cable and cable tie-downs. You lose length pretty quickly with vertical runs and snaking around some areas.
Just bought a 2500 here in Australia, the cameras on vans here (Safety Dave) aren’t compatible without doing under dash mods that aren’t cheap. This camera kit is available here, I’m thinking I’ll use the camera kit and forget about the vans built in cameras. Quite a shame really as the built in cameras work well in the dark too. I could run a cable and put a screen on the dash but then I have a screen on the dash. 🤷♂️
I've watched this vid a dozen times before installing my camera on my 24 GMC Denali 2500. Installed it just like you did. :-) Took it down the road to calibrate and it just wouldn't. Kept it at 30mph. The instructions mention 35 degree down angle on the camera, is that necessary? Also, it's quite cloudy with some rain, so I'm wondering if that could be the issue. What do you think?
There is some issues I have read with 2024 trucks. More to do with the software. I remember having a hard time calibrating at first and almost gave up. Then in the video I talked about what finally worked. Sorry I filmed it awhile ago and can’t remember off the top of my head
Just not sure about the degree of the camera. I'll try again below 31mph if/when the sun comes back out. Hopefully it'll sync. Thanks for the reply. 🙂@@Donslife
Glad you liked it! I was happy with the experience. Routing for a 5th wheel is certainly possible but the invisible trailer view might be tough to pull off. But if you just want to the camera view, it works really well.
I tow horses, so I first added the camera like Don on my trailer. Worked for awhile then stopped working. I verified the camera worked by plugging it into the internal trailer view port and it worked. I was about to schedule it for warranty repair, then my wife bought me the second camera so I could watch the horses too. Oddly enough when both cameras are plugged in, it all worked and has been working for the past 5 tows. However, if i just try to plug in the back up camera only.... it doesn't work. No explanation, but I will bring it up to the dealer when I bring the truck in for service. One complaint, if you are driving down the road and want to 'watch' your horses, the view is only available for 8 seconds. Don't know why GM did that. If anyone knows how to leave that view on, I would appreciate it.
Todd, out of curiosity,.. is your horse trailer a bumper pull or gooseneck? I've done this set up with my 2021 Sierra HD with a gooseneck 2+1 but it required some inventive cabling from the trailer as the camera inputs are in the bumper - it's awkward. I'd love to know if any one has figured out how to move those camera inputs into the bed of the truck.
I installed the camera a month ago and still can't get it to calibrate for the transparent trailer. Triple checked the measurements, angle of the camera and nothing. Any tips or recommendations to fix this issue? I have a 27ft camper
@@Donslife I did after 5-10 seconds it canceled the calibration and said to check the owner's manual. On the camera app, the progression bar doesn't even move
@@ElEddieboss how fast did you drive? It’s been awhile but I think mine failed a bunch of times until I went fast enough on a longer stretch. Sorry I am going off of my terrible memory. I don’t have the instructions handy
@@Donslife I drove below 30mph for about .5 miles. But most of the time I can't even drive 400 meters before it gets canceled. I have tried to stop shut down the truck reset everything and still nothing. I have a GMC 1500 2022 I don't know if it is a software issue.
I had the EchoMaster system I installed on my old 2016 Silverado 3500. Mounted the camera on top of the 42 foot 5th wheel. I used the rear marker lights for my 12 volt power source on the camera. Only problem with that was I had to make sure I turned my parking lights on/off every time. That wasn't to bad. But the thing I hated most with the wireless system was it would always go out within close range of another wifi modem. (Especially in campgrounds where you need it the most.) And the worst thing was trying to use it to back up. The process it took to override the factory backup camera was a real PITA. Save yourself the headache and go with the wired option.
Ya, that’s the case for some. It is still possible but bolts (maybe even extended ones) would be the way to go. Leave slack in the cable where the door hinge is too.
Sir Great Video!. Do you think this will work on a 5th wheel? I have a spot up high on the RV and I am thinking it may be too high for the invisible camera view. 2022 Chevy 3500 SRW Duramax High Country. Thanks. Liked and subscribed.
Thanks for watching! It should, but you would lose the angle for the invisible trailer feature. Also pre-measure with some rope or something to make sure it will reach to where you need it to
We purchased this camera and after 4 times using it stopped working. We tried plugging it into another gmc and it still doesn’t work. Any ideas why it stopped working? Anyone else have this issue?
I bought this camera but returned it after opening the box and reading the manual. 1- This camera will not work with a 5th wheel trailer. 2- My trailer is too long. I think that the concept of this camera is great, but the engineering is very poor, and it doesn't look like GM is going to redesign it.
Camera WILL work with a Fifth wheel or gooseneck trailer. The invisible trailer view will be distorted. Just cheat when entering the total length, and choose a bumper pull trailer, just like in the video here. It will still work fine as a backup camera no matter which trailer you choose in setup. I have one on a 40' ATC Fifth Wheel, works good enough for me and is way better than no backup camera at all!

Talk to the GM parts department. They should be able to help you out
I'll give that a try, need to find a new garage, the one I bought the truck from sucks@@Donslife
Is there a hack to keep the factory cameras from timing out while driving or did I miss it in the settings? Thanks.
No hack that I am aware of. Some views like the trailer camera will stay on at all speeds. The others will usually stay on at very low speeds only.
Thanks. You have great content.
Also there is a TSB related to some camera issues :
static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2023/MC-10234186-0001.pdf
This might be a good start
Thank you so much!!!! My truck is an early 2024 model so hopefully one of these is the solution. I just had my trailer module changed, so it may have something to do with that. If not, then I guess it needs to go to a dealer for diagnostics. I'm hoping to head south next week and because I travel alone, a backup camera will make getting into spaces easier. @@Donslife
Great video thanks
I want to try mine in different locations to see how I like it
Great review. I don’t see a link to this product unless I am missing it. Can you share the product number for the kit.
This is the kit directly from GM. I think the oart numbers may vary.
Here is one GM (85587357
Thanks for the video. Did you look at the wireless camera option?
Briefly, but I have always wanted to try this one from GM and see how the rest of their built in trailer tech works
@@Donslife After watching your video. I did a research for trailer cameras and found that GM has a wireless camera so was curious. If you looked into one GM wireless and went with cord one instead.
Do a follow-up on why the Escalade check engine light came on I'm curious to know if it was the air intake that you put on.
How did you deal with the extra wiring? Loop at the trailer tongue?
Yes, but further back in the frame rails of the trailer near the tank and battery mounts.
What year is your truck? I have a 2020 z71 ltz and I can’t seem to get the same options like the jack knife warning and the back up guidelines.. dealership really knows nothing, just had an update done there and still not given the options..
2021 AT4 sir
Good content 👌
Appreciate it
I may have missed it, but was the link for the camera up? Thanks for sharing and looks like a solid investment to have installed on a trailer/boat. Much appreciated once again!
I bought mine from the GMC dealership/parts department
This looks like the same one on Amazon : amzn.to/46FdFSG
I would still contact the dealer
@@Donslife thank you once again Sir! Much appreciated.
Have you tried the transparent towing on your Escalade? I set it up and all other camera features work but I cant find the option for transparent trailer on the Escalade infotainment system. Thanks
I haven’t yet. Now I am curious
Great video, I just received my camera and will be installing this spring. Did you screw in the camera? Or use epoxy? Or just double sided tape?
Thanks man! In this case I just use the supplied double sided tape
@@Donslife and it has held up? Good to know…I had read they recommend to screw it in which I do not want to do.
Holding up fine. I would consider screwing it in more permanently but this trailer might be replaced in a year or two
Very well done video. Just received this camera and looking at the install. How is the tape working to keep the camera in place? I do not want to drill holes in the back of my camper and looking a maybe using Velcro for the mounting. What are your (or others) thoughts on going that route for the mounting on the trailer?
Thanks
Thanks! The adhesive the camera shipped with seems just fine. Unless you find the best velcro ever, I wouldn’t feel comfortable using that.
@Donslife Thanks for your great video! Is the adhesive that came with the camera still holding on just fine a year later?
DO USE USE 91 OCTANE WHEN PULLING YOUR TRAILER AND BOAT?
Yes sir
@@Donslife THANKS FOR THE VIDIOS THAT YOU DO ENJOY THEM. WIFE DOSN'T BECAUSE YOU MAKE ME WANT TO SPEND MONEY. HAHA
Thanks for the video! Do you have the video rear view mirror? If so, did the trailer cam show up there?
I do have it, but all you see is the front nose of the trailer, not the trailer camera
I won’t tell the camera that you lied about your inches😂
You have to drive in a straight line for several minutes to calibrate? It’s a good thing you live in Saskatchewan.😂
This looks like a handy product, if my dad updates his Sierra, I know I’m definitely going to be getting this for him to reduce the friction between him and my mom when trying to park their trailer😂
Can this work for a truck not GMC because my trailer came with it from previous owner but I have Nissan frontier
Unfortunately this specific camera system is only for compatible GMC and Chevy vehicles. At least as far as I know.
what is the total length of cable that they provide you with the system?
🙂@@Donslife
How is the adhesive holding up? Like you I do not want to put holes in my camper. Just curious how its held up after 10 months of use.
Good. Still holding on. It is parked out of direct sunlight. I am not sure if that helps or hinders it
Thanks for the review. Looking at getting one. Are you happy with it? I would be putting it on a 30ft 5th wheel. Thanks
Glad you liked it! I was happy with the experience. Routing for a 5th wheel is certainly possible but the invisible trailer view might be tough to pull off. But if you just want to the camera view, it works really well.
@@Donslife ok thanks
I can live with out the invisible trailer. Just like to see what’s behind me. Thanks again
@@gerrylearmonth9131 did you put it up high or at a lower level
@@thomasroseman575 I decided not to install one. I have a toy hauler was thinking it might be more work then it was worth.
@@gerrylearmonth9131 do you still have it
I tow horses, so I first added the camera like Don on my trailer.
Thanks for the info. Let us know what you find out. I am not aware of a way to change the 8 seconds. It would require some kind of coding.
@@lindacurrie1696 mine is a bumper pull. It works soundly with both cameras plugged in still.
Im American had to pull out the calculator to convert mm into inches 😂
Well the rest of the world uses metric 😂
I installed the camera a month ago and still can't get it to calibrate for the transparent trailer. Triple checked the measurements, angle of the camera and nothing. Any tips or recommendations to fix this issue? I have a 27ft camper
Did you go for the calibration drive? Your trailer is short enough for the specs
Great video
Appreciate the comment!
I'm too lazy to read the description. Can you tell me which screwdriver you used to re-orient the camera cable?
A T15 or T25. I am too lazy to remember which 😂. It also has a hex head, so a crescent wrench 🔧 would work

What kind of car is the red one? From the 50s?

I see wired and wireless option on GM site, but wireless needs IntelliHaul 2.0 Systems by EchoMaster. Any insight on wireless option?
I would like to use this on our boat/boat trailer, is it waterproof does anyone know?
Didn’t work so well for me. I have rear storage on my camper and the camera placement would end up on the door.
Ya, that’s the case for some. It is still possible but bolts (maybe even extended ones) would be the way to go. Leave slack in the cable where the door hinge is too.
Where can i find interior camera?
From the GM or Chevy dealer would be a good place to start
Mine's good, can you make a warranty claim?
I bought this camera but returned it after opening the box and reading the manual. 1- This camera will not work with a 5th wheel trailer. 2- My trailer is too long.
I think that the concept of this camera is great, but the engineering is very poor, and it doesn't look like GM is going to redesign it.
Definitely for some very specific trailer applications
Camera WILL work with a Fifth wheel or gooseneck trailer. The invisible trailer view will be distorted. Just cheat when entering the total length, and choose a bumper pull trailer, just like in the video here. It will still work fine as a backup camera no matter which trailer you choose in setup. I have one on a 40' ATC Fifth Wheel, works good enough for me and is way better than no backup camera at all!
Why isn’t this a wireless unit. Let’s get in the 21 Century please.
No idea
I have a 2022 AT4 and I find the rear tire views (tire or mirror) camera to be very grainy and basically 💩💩💩
Same on mine for rear tire from camera in mirror. I was told by dealer this was due to distance of rear tires from camera and magnification.
All of them are grainy. The camera resolution is lower than the others for sure. My wife’s new Escalade is no better for the side mirrors
Clean camera with magic shine for headlights
$1000? F that..
Way too much camper for a half ton.
Ultralight trailer at 6400lbs dry. Maybe 500-800lbs of payload and cargo. Tongue weight is within 80% of spec. What is wrong with the setup?
GM should be paying you for correcting their expensive crap!
