A lot of people have been asking why the octane rating in the US is so low compared to Europe. In the US we use a different rating system called "Anti Knock Index" while in Europe you have "Research Octane Number." 91 octane US is the equivalent of 95 octane EU. I liked your video, but I certainly disagree with you about 93 octane in the U.S. MOST gas stations do NOT offer 93 octane. Here in California, "premium" is 91 octane AKI and you have to search diligently for 93 octane. Few stations sell it. I travel to Colorado fairly often, and the octane levels are even lower, because of high altitude. "Premium" is 89 octane. I don't know where you'd get 93. In almost every metro area you will find 100 octane at a few specialty stations (I think Sunoco is most common), but you have to do your research to find out where they are. They're not going to sell higher than 91 at Arco or Chevron!
@@desertpair2 It's been a while since I've been to CA. Here in the midwest, almost all gas stations sell 93. It would be unusual to find a station that doesn't have it.
Best thing about this video is seeing the price of GAS, back in 2017, also in USA. Compared to me locally where I run my car on 95 (we have 91, 95 and 98 options or E85 for ethanol cars in NZ). 95 where I live is currently as of 26/04/2019 $ 2.30/L NZD which translates to approx $1.52/L USD at current prices! People complain about the price of the cheap sludge (AKA 91) petrol since its over $2/L ^_^ Even if your "USA 91" is the same as 95 here $2.90usd is $4.38 NZD/L People would shit a brick if the pumps charged that!!! You could run your car on 98 here at just under $3.00 NZD/L or on ethanol $3.05/L , and it would be close to 2/3 price of the USA's petrol !!! How does $1.98USD/L for USA "93" Petrol or ethanol sound Justin? ^_^ Ethanol is super hard to find though, most race tracks may have it but on the roads most car lovers can only buy 98.
I bought a 2008 5 series as my first car at 17. 75k miles, no accidents or big issues at all. Right now I'm at 80k, I've had the car for about 4 months with no issues. My advice if anyone is trying to buy a used BMW- be sure the previous owner(s) have detailed record of scheduled services, oil change etc. it's not worth the risk to buy one and realize there are issues later down the road. That being said, I would absolutely recommend a bmw as a first car if you can afford it.
Jolo Canlas gotcha. A lot of it depends on things like your insurance company, plan, etc. I do know that if your on a family plan it is considerably cheaper than if it was just you
I see. Back to the car, is the bmw with that mile age is ok? the guy told me that they had the car since its brand new and well mentained and he has all the maintenance records, with that its well taken cared of, watcha think

I'm 19 now but I got my 2005 BMW X3 when I was 17 with 118k miles for $4,000 at the auction. Insurance through my parents is about $165 a month, gas can get expensive last time I filled up gas was $3.36 for 93 in MA and cost a bit of change over $50 to fill up. Maintenance wise besides oil changes and tires I've had to replace 4-5 coil packs which are about $30 each. Currently at about 134k miles running strong. Also a 6 speed manual which is pretty rare people are always surprised.
Speaking from a 17 yr old who did buy a BMW for their first car it's expensive. I bought the exact same car Justin had but no the AWD version and mine had the M sport package. 140K mileage paid less than 6K and the car so far had been really unreliable. Had A bad DTML pump and a charcoal canister go bad in the first week spent $1000 on repairs and spent $110 on a breakfluid change now at the Indy shop I took it too discover I was leaking Power steering fluid, valve cover gasket leaking and oil pan gasket. I'm looking at about $1500 to fix it fully. So keep in mind they are expensive. My family has helped me so far cover the repairs since I'm still in school. I wish now I would have just bought a dealer BMW with low mileage

Buy a car used not from a dealer! By the way my 330i e90 has 165,000 miles I bought it 140,00 only issue I've gotten was the Window door regulator don't let miles fool you as long as you can work on your own car it's not a big of a deal for maintenance
what is was saying is used car dealers tip you off. i saw a used dealer selling an 01 toyota echo with 187k miles for 5k. according to kbb the echo is only worth $1300
My first car was a 2000 VW Jetta GLS and I loved it. Although I would like to add that a 2006 BMW 325i is an AMAZINGLY fuel efficient car. Once I learned how to drive it here in Houston when I average 45-60 mph I can get between 40-50 mpg, so I’d say once you learn the most efficient range a SMALLER ENGINE BMW can be as efficient as any car, and if you become an expert at it you can get Prius V efficiency.
Thanks for the video! Absolutely true everything you said! I have my 2010 e90. Its been super reliable up until i hit 120k then electric water pump went. Few month after the head cover seal went, after that my coils needed to be replaced. But again I owned the car for 7 years until i had these problems. So if i may put my advice out there for ppl that are looking to get into a BMW, definitely consider milage that would be my number 1 advice just like you said! And being financial prepared to cover unexpected costs. I mean that goes for any brand of car but keep in mind that BMW is always going to be a bit more privacy when it comes to repairs. However in my opinion it pays off, you'll get the smoothness, performance and elegance of driving a BMW.
Well as far as oil changes go, it may sound more expensive, but it's only 1 oil change/yr. or every 10,000 miles for the newer models. Oil changes in NY generally go for about $45-$70 every 3 months or 3,000 miles for synthetic oil. So it can avg. from 120-210, whereas BMW's 1 oil change/yr. is about $150-$175. So it almost balances out.
My “first car” was my moms 2011 Mercedes GL550 😂 I was 16, in 2012 She bought herself the 2013 GL 63 AMG at the time When she passed it down, it had 10,000 miles on it, but being a teenager I put 30,000 in the same year, and kept it for 2 more years, in the end, I had 125,000 miles, Air suspension was out in all 4 corners along with the compressor, the 4MATIC electronics were going out and my power lift gate was sooo loud it could wake up the neighborhood Maintenance would murder me and as soon as the transmission slipped once on me, my dad traded it in for a Yukon Denali and swore to never allow for our family to keep a Mercedes after the warranty ends 💀 and they handed me the keys to the 2002 Odyssey to get me through high school, best car I’ve ever had 😂 Im now 20 and I own a 2009 Odyssey 💀
Bought a 335i for 10k 78k miles not bad for a 2007. Came with m-tech package. Sports and premium package. Honestly doubt I’ll ever be this lucky again in my life. Previous owner also took maintenance very seriously something that I will be doing too.
Just if anyone is interested... About oil & filter change. Brand new filters + oil did cost me about 110€ and 80€ for oil & filter change (+ coolant change, parking brake maintenance, ). It’s very nice when you have close people / friends or family members who knows about cars / mechanics so they charge you with way lower price and give you sum discounts
The first car that I really used was actually a 335d, only time I have used it properly was testing it after the EGR recall thing, great car except for that one problem that causes oil to explode out of the intake manifold and pour smoke into the air vents, but at least BMW are doing it for free
Lower miles on these cars aren’t always better. I bought mine with 105k, so the previous owner took the hit on the 100k mile servicing. Thinking about what services and repairs have to be done and when and comparing it with what the previous owners have already replaced is something to think about
my 1st was an 95 e36m3, owned it for 7 years and never regret it, I'm still missing it so much and even now on a Subaru awd, I still miss that #SheerDrivingPleasure on my e36... it's like a first love, its first drift like a first kiss....... really loved that #UltimateDrivingMachine
Great video yes I live in Detroit too. You are right on the cost gas and insurance. I have a 535xi and the insurance is crazy expensive. It cost me more for my BMW than for my previous vehicle which was a Lexus. Everyone watching this video he is 100% correct. I have paid $200 for an oil change at the dealer. And $1000 for repair cost.
first car i got 5 years ago was honda civic and this was perfect car for beginners, good motor and small car dimensions....after 3 months after i got bmw 316i,, f30, almost new one....and first day i tried driving high speed in roundabout in city center of lisbon and i lost control and only thru intuitive skills i again controlled the car not to land on the roof and got a big shock...since then i learned not to do any shit and to drive like it should be and since than no problems, already 100.000 km. car is perfect, only that you need to repair it often...the reason I keep it, it is pretty and it has very good construction of framework which gives extra safety.
I’m just watching this video now because for my first car I am obviously getting a bmw because my dad works there so my dad can do my maintenance so that will save me a lot of money. Also he gets deals on the cars. I am very excited
TheXeonShock 3.70 for 93 here In Chicago, the closer to downtown the closer to $4 a gallon it gets. But apparently New Zealand gas is $10+ US dollars a month.
If you have the money to maintain it or know to fix them yourself, it's a good car. I actually tried to sell my 07 BMW 328 on Craigslist last week before giving up after too many insulating law ball offer and just sold it to CarMax. The car was in great shape but it' 10 years old and will need some work. The one buy I meant with complained about the cost for parts it may need someday after speaking this mechanic. I told him, "if your trying to save money, buy a Honda or a Toyota... a BMW isn't right for you" and I did him a favor by walking away. I'm selling my BMW 3 series after six years of ownership only because we had a little one and can't fit a car seat back there! Otherwise, I loved that car.
I had a 2010 328xi with a stick and 100k miles as my first car, good first car for driving, not too fast but handled very well, had great steering and speakers and a great manual transmission, was an absolute bitch to maintain though. Taught me a lot about what i like in cars, and what i dont. Justin hit the nail on the head when he said you need to have $1000 on hand at any moment should anything go wrong, the n5x series engines have reliable internals, but outside of that everything is fair game
With 320d or 318d (F30) you can get easily 58 miles per gallon, or around 4 liter per 100 km, that is pretty much efficient. In Europe people how are looking on efficentsy oftenly buy diesel. Advice for buying used car - buy low mileage car, best from 1st user and regularly maintained.
Your video helped me a lot. When I take the driving license I will have a mercedes e270 cdi w211 and you help to have a perception of the reality that I will face. Thank you
BMW is definitely a good first car. I'm 19 yo and drive a e39 530i. Really reliable and it was very cheap when I bought it. Just insurance and gas is expensive but that's what you have to accept when buying one of these cars.
A Mercedes or BMW will be my first car. I live in California with the high gas prices.. & Insurance will be a lot because I’m 18 but I’ll probably join my parents insurance until I buy my own car.. anything to save money rn haha.
This was a great video for people interested in BMWs. I personally recommend looking into a CPO. It costs a bit more than the asking price but you get 2+ years added on to the original warranty. And the car has been thoroughly inspected by Bmw. I added an extra 2 year service plan to my car. So I could save on oil changes, and other service repairs. A CPO also lets you receive really low interest rates on car loans. Mine was 1.59%.
I am currently looking for my first car and I am considering a 2011 BMW 328i. Very neat and clean. Has 82k miles and is going for 9700. What should I look out for? I am in Orlando Florida Thank you

Im gettin the warning light that indicates open hood even when its closed. 3. I cant delete the wsrning of deflate tires, just display the code but doesnt appear the "reset" option. @Make Sailboat im late but i have less than 1k now, just bought a house and gave the dealer my Seat as a discount for my 2016 s1 118i BMW, i just pay a little bit each month you dont need half the price...
I bought an aftermarket warranty for my 530i, starts October 29th. I pay $70 a month, 60 day waiting period. BMWs are NOT bad cars, sadly I bought mine from a lying POS I have put in almost 8k in maintenance and repairs for the almost 3 years I almost owned it, is it the cars fault? No. My friends have BMWs and my PT Cruiser was STILL a money pit from hell compared to even a neglected BMW! The PT Cruiser was a well cared for car but man what a POS! Point blank, if you bought a BMW get an aftermarket warranty if the price is right. Or just pay out of pocket the choice is yours. These cars drive like a dream. That’s why I own one.
Can some one please let me know is the inner side of the headlight will work or it’s just for the show in day light light. Only outer side of the bulb is working in bmw 1 series m sport 118d 2019 model
on octane,, "generally" a BMW will run on lower octane, the engine will map to that, all cars have to because you may be in a position to use lower octane gas. it WILL NOT damage your engine, your performance will be lacking. putting HIGHER octane then recommended will not give you any gains, you will actually get worse gas consumption. neither option will DAMAGE your engine
5:21 i cried when I saw the depreciation on my car, I would have been better to put a bit more more and get a 2 series vert, but I still love my 128i. BUT I couldn't justify paying 50k for a car
Looking at a 3 GT diesel in either in 3L twin turbo or 2L. Will be towing caravan so is it better to drive a 3l for torque and not straining engine or go for 2L knowing it will work harder but maybe cheaper to work on? Or is repairs similar costs? By the way both are at 130k mikes - should I walk and find something lower or is 130k still acceptable for these diesels?

! My insurance went down when I bought a BMW - its considered a 'safer' car.
Buy a car used not from a dealer!
By the way my 330i e90 has 165,000 miles I bought it 140,00 only issue I've gotten was the Window door regulator don't let miles fool you as long as you can work on your own car it's not a big of a deal for maintenance
I saw a used car dealer asking $4000 for a 179k mile e36 328i.
wtf 4000$ ? here in Europe a 328i 200.000 + km is about 7000-10000$
thats about 130k miles.
yeah but a e46 320d 2001 with 300.000 km cost 3000
what is was saying is used car dealers tip you off. i saw a used dealer selling an 01 toyota echo with 187k miles for 5k. according to kbb the echo is only worth $1300
You can't get Prius V fuel economy, but you can get good efficiency out of turbo fours.
"Premium 93 gasoline"
Haha - laughs in European
Artur the land where 95 is regular
93 in US is equivalent to 97 in Europe
Well a liter of yalls shit could get me two gallons here in the states
My “first car” was my moms 2011 Mercedes GL550 😂
I was 16, in 2012
She bought herself the 2013 GL 63 AMG at the time
When she passed it down, it had 10,000 miles on it, but being a teenager I put 30,000 in the same year, and kept it for 2 more years, in the end, I had 125,000 miles,
Air suspension was out in all 4 corners along with the compressor, the 4MATIC electronics were going out and my power lift gate was sooo loud it could wake up the neighborhood
Maintenance would murder me and as soon as the transmission slipped once on me, my dad traded it in for a Yukon Denali and swore to never allow for our family to keep a Mercedes after the warranty ends 💀
and they handed me the keys to the 2002 Odyssey to get me through high school, best car I’ve ever had 😂
Im now 20 and I own a 2009 Odyssey 💀
Certified Hood Classic- 2021
Kevin Love.. is that you??
So that's what he does when he's not busy fluffing Bron Bron LOL!
💀
In Europe, you cant even get below 90 octanes with fuel. Minimum is 95, better is 98 and a premium is a 100.
Vojtěch Pospíchal they use different measurements for octane. It's all the same
Yes. Its the same octanes. Just different measurement
Wow. $2.45 for 87 gas!! Im jealous!! Southern California Gas is around $2.80-$3.10 for that tier. 😭😭😭
+TheXeonShock when i went to south carolina it was under $2 for 87
its 3.55 here in Washington DC it kills me
I go to Costco and get 91 octane for 3.00.
Costco Gas honestly is the best.
You are jealous but we pay double that in Europe...
Too late already got mine 325i last month
Danny Jr how’s the car? I’m thinking of getting one as well.
Yeah how is your car ?
How is it holding up?
yea i’m thinking of getting one , how has it treated you
With 320d or 318d (F30) you can get easily 58 miles per gallon, or around 4 liter per 100 km, that is pretty much efficient.
& Insurance will be a lot because I’m 18 but I’ll probably join my parents insurance until I buy my own car.. anything to save money rn haha.
those gas prices made me want to cry
This was a great video for people interested in BMWs. I personally recommend looking into a CPO. It costs a bit more than the asking price but you get 2+ years added on to the original warranty. And the car has been thoroughly inspected by Bmw.
I added an extra 2 year service plan to my car. So I could save on oil changes, and other service repairs.
A CPO also lets you receive really low interest rates on car loans. Mine was 1.59%.
I just got a BMW and I really could use your help with this
Just bought my first car BMW 320i sedan and I'm loving it so far 👌👌
William Hollis hows the car know?!!
William Hollis How is your car now?
How is your car now ?
How is ur car now?
My first car was a Pontiac. G6 and it was dope
Nice! Mine was a Pontiac Sunfire lol
I am currently looking for my first car and I am considering a 2011 BMW 328i. Very neat and clean. Has 82k miles and is going for 9700. What should I look out for? I am in Orlando Florida
Thank you
Did u buy it?
No. Bought a ford Ecosport instead
I like your editing man, keep it up
Just bought an e36 m3 with 85k miles for $3500. Cost me $2800 to get it almost perfect including registration, sales tax, repairs and tires.
Anthony Bizer I'd say it's a good deal if the car is in perfect mechanical condition.
im watching this after buying my first car as a bmw
i'm now working for my first BMW e36 91' with m50b25 and yeah i propably weld diff faster than i buy it :)
MY ADVICEE!!!!!!
MY FIRST CAR WAS A BMW 328 XI 2009 WHICH I BOUGHT LAST YR. I DIDN'T DO ANY CAR PAYMENTS I SAVED UP AND BOUGHT IT WITH A 2 YR WARRANTY (13,775). IT HAD 126,000 KM ON IT AND CAME FROM ONE OWNER WHO WAS A WOMEN WHO LIVED IN A RICH AREA AND TOOK CARE OF IT (MAKE SURE TO PICK THE RIGHT ONE). IM 25 AND I PAY 301 DOLLARS ON INSURANCE MONTHLY (IT DROPPED TO 225 IN A YEAR) . ITS BEEN ONE FULL YEAR AND ONLY THING THAT WENT WRONG WAS THE BLOWER MOTOR.
MY BIGGEST ADVICE ID SAY IS DO WHAT MAKES SENSE. . .MY MOTHER HAS A X3 AND HAS A TRUST WORTHY MECHANIC SO HALF THE BATTLE WAS WON ALREADY PLUS I DIDNT DO CAR PAYMENTS. GAS IS 50 A WEEK I LIVE IN CANADA. LASTLY MAKE SUREEEEEE TO GET WARRANTY THATS THE MAIN THING OTHER THAT YOU SHOULD BE GOOD. . . .
PS. WOULDN'T HURT TO HAVE 800 - 1000 SET ASIDE JUST IN CASE YOU NEVER KNOW. 100
JEROME KINGSBURY OK THANKS FOR THE ADVICE
PS FIX YOUR CAPS LOCK
Stop screaming ! you sound like a car salesman on TV ads.
Agreed. This is me. Buy outright. Be ready for the unexpected
Go for an E30 or E28. Cheap insurance and cheap to maintain. Plus super reliable. It's a mechanical and not electrical car
Fadi El Hakim E30’s are so damn hard to find in good condition under 3k :( at least in So Cal
Fadi El Hakim
Exactly! My first Bmw was a E30, All mechanical and very reliable unlike the newer Bmw's.
Get an accord v6 coupe with leather interior instead you will love it
Ayman Osman it's a great car.
91 gas here in California for the moment is 4.50$ a gallon, it costs about 67 dollars to fill the tank
Finding a good Indie will save your wallet. I brought my 08 328i to an indie, got both brake pad replaced, oil change, spark plugs, brake fluid flush, steering fluid flush for around $500-$600. I did the engine air filter and and cabin air filter my self
My first car was an 01 Lexus GS 300. Hell of a car and I owned it out right. It was totaled the day before my birthday Oct 18. My parents want me to get a shitty ford or something but nothing I’m looking at in my price range is as nice as my Lexus. Ive seen some nice Audi’s and BMW’s in my price range and I really want one. The insurance isn’t a problem and my father in law does all my car maintenance I literally pay for parts and he does labor if I even pay for parts. I want another luxury car but I’m not sure if I’m just thinking like a typical 23 year old
I drive 320d 2007 and use Castrol full synthetic oil. It about 50 Euros with oil filter.
My dad drive Opel Meriva and uses same oil, so it's the same price, no difference.
My 2 sisters dad and mom have bmw’s I’m the second youngest and I’m getting a 2017 x5 in a couple weeks I’m so excited my cars going to be the newest out of them all well until next year when my brother can get his permit
My first car was a 530 xi wagon. Bought it this past Friday :)
only repairs ive done was replacing my ccv and disa valve and replaced oil vaccum lines .
Helpful n right straight to the point
328i coupe which year is best year 2007-2013? No m sport
This was actually really helpful
I have a 2011 335i m sport and I'm loving it so far but the PCV valve has gone bad and the whole assembly is going to be replaced on Wednesday at my local ASE certified BMW mechanic and might as well have everything else checked out for routinely maintenance while it's still under extended warranty from when I got it
Bmw dealer in my town 200$ ouk changes. I change myself. Good video dude
I found a bmw 323i for 10k with 120k miles in private sale it was fully loaded with tan leather seats it looked clean but i suspect that something is wrong the parts are wearing off espeicially the interior materials idc about the looks of the car i have emergency 1500 dollars saved
I watched this video a little too late, I have two BMWs, but I don't regret buying either of them!
I got my oil changed on my e46 from Valvoline for free lol. Took my own oil and filter ($60) they were happy to change it, and don't charge me! Not sure if they forgot or because I took my own oil.
Great video as always especially for younger driver and first time owners.
Thanks man!
Yesterday i bought an BMW E90 320i for about 8000 $ as my first car im 17 years old and still go to school. In germany you are allowed to drive at the age of 18. I hope it wasnt the wrong choice. Lets see in 2 weeks.
Anything happened the last few monts?
Update?
Update!!!!
Just bought a 2006 325i coupe
Great videos btw
Thanks!
Bought a 320d in the uk for my first car. Insurance is £1650 fully comp on my own policy witch was cheaper than a 1.2 corsa or a fiesta
Hi Justin, congratulatios for your channel, very useful...

Version) like you said in one of you videos had to replace the water pump and thermostat but now im having some other failures and i hope you can help me... 1.I cant use the manual mode of the gear box, i move the lever to the left but nothing happens it still on normal mode (cant see any warning about that on the dash) 2. Im gettin the warning light that indicates open hood even when its closed. 3. I cant delete the wsrning of deflate tires, just display the code but doesnt appear the "reset" option. Thanks in advance!
What’s the highest mileage you would go up to realistically for a used Beamer?
If you're broke bmw is not for you.
Mcgyver B i bet you dont even have a good bmw but you keep commenting the same thing on multiple vids
@Make Sailboat im late but i have less than 1k now, just bought a house and gave the dealer my Seat as a discount for my 2016 s1 118i BMW, i just pay a little bit each month you dont need half the price...
Im not broke but i still wont buy bmw🤷🏻♂️ im more like volvo guy
Mcgyver B if you are Broke every car is not for you.
Looking at the gas prices in the beginning of the video got me mad we got 5$ gas now in 2022
Own an E46 at 18 years old with perfect driving record and I pay $85 a month for insurance on my own policy
Am a car mechanic and I want to have a E46 as a first car what your advice
Well said, great vid as always!
Thanks man!
3 years ago 91 in San Francisco cost 4.19.
Charles Nicholson truth
I’m paying 3.70 for 91 at the moment
Joey McMahon Jr where’d you get an aftermarket warranty from??
I did 6 weeks ago and it’s the best decision i’ve made
Can some one please let me know is the inner side of the headlight will work or it’s just for the show in day light light. Only outer side of the bulb is working in bmw 1 series m sport 118d 2019 model
Damn here in Cali gas is starting at $3.15 lol
here in germany it would be like 5-6 $
Great video!
on octane,, "generally" a BMW will run on lower octane, the engine will map to that, all cars have to because you may be in a position to use lower octane gas. it WILL NOT damage your engine, your performance will be lacking. putting HIGHER octane then recommended will not give you any gains, you will actually get worse gas consumption. neither option will DAMAGE your engine
Is the 325i premium only?
5:21 i cried when I saw the depreciation on my car, I would have been better to put a bit more more and get a 2 series vert, but I still love my 128i. BUT I couldn't justify paying 50k for a car
Nice video I subbed
Welcome to the channel!
Great channel! Thanks Justin 👍👍
Hey, just bought a 2015 BMW X4 35i, M sport, 77k miles. not my first, but 2nd. is that good?
Looking at a 3 GT diesel in either in 3L twin turbo or 2L. Will be towing caravan so is it better to drive a 3l for torque and not straining engine or go for 2L knowing it will work harder but maybe cheaper to work on? Or is repairs similar costs? By the way both are at 130k mikes - should I walk and find something lower or is 130k still acceptable for these diesels?
50 bucks here in Cali to fill my e39. I fill up at chevron. Maybe I’m lucky but BMW has been good to me.
i kind of want a 328i for the reliability but I'm not sure if i should go for a 335i xdrive
Hello I have a question I have fond a lot of bmw’s that have about 100,000 miles is that high miles?
HOLY CRAP $9K FOR E60? Dude you are so lucky. Here in the Philippines, even the used non-M cars costs about 15k+
Insurance for a 2009 Toyota in 1999 was 6k here in NYC
Currently rn i am dailying a 01 e46 325xi sedan, runs well at i use 89 for my car
But the milage can be adjusted. how do you know the true milage that had been done to the car?
