The journey continues. I will be taking a look at EVERY official Pokémon video game release in exact North American order. All 66+ games. Seventh is Pokémon Puzzle League, a game I have never played before until now.

My family and my Sister's BF's family got *addicted* to this game. One time we found mom passed out, ass in the air, sleeping on an N64 controller in the living room because she was up all night practicing to beat me and my sis... and dad STILL says "Work harder young one" in his best Koga impression.
Welcome back, shroomy boi!
Had no idea some families played this for game night, what lucky people! My brothers and I played this a lot, but I was the only one who actually played it so much that I became the Puzzle Master in my house to the point my brothers don't like playing it with me even to this day. One even tried to trick me by setting himself as the CPU at its highest level, and I still won. My proudest achievement with the game was I was home sick and I beat Mewtwo on the first try reaching him (Very Hard, but still, it was a twist reveal) in about 90 seconds. Was a real close call, too.
As for it being addicting, you're right on the money there. I'll admit that about sometime over a decade ago, I actually _did_ get addicted to this game, legit had withdrawals from it until I had to train myself to only just use it as a way to loosen up my fingers (which feels great). Getting over it still didn't soil my love for this game. In terms of spin-off titles, it's my favorite Pokémon spin-off even if it's not all that special.
Wow, so you REALLY have a connection to this game. This style just grabs the right kinds of people I guess. I feel like my mind isn’t geared toward block games like these
@@Paraspectre I just like puzzle games, and it was a great way for me to just talk to my brothers about whatever I wanted (used to record our conversations during playthroughs). Must've been some kind of concentration practice for me or something.
"Create chains and combos to send garbage to your opponent"
Me, having successfully completed a chain combo: "Here, take this." I proceed to hand Matthew a copy of Pokemon Sword.
Yep, this is definitely the first in a line of side games here they just painted a thin Pokemon veneer over another game and slapped a full price tag on it. I am impressed they went to the trouble of making an entire anime intro for Puzzle League. Too bad Gen 1 went out with a whimper instead of a bang but at least Gen 2 was on the horizon. Watching these videos definitely makes me feel nostalgic for the late 90's early 2000's I was still a pretty young kid so I don't remember them as much as the mid 2000's but what few memories remain are still wonderfully sweet.
Amazing. Matthew would just use Geodudes and Onix the whole game.
I love looking back at the Pokémon nostalgia too. If I ever hear Higher by Creed out in the wild, classic Pokémon comes to mind so I don’t hate Creed like everyone else does haha
The nostalgia comes of that job to league journeys theme. I even remember the very first time I heard it. It was the episode where ash caught heracross. What a trip.
For what it's worth the blocks are based on the gym badges. The circle is the marsh badge and the heart is the soul badge etc
Yeah that makes sense. I wasn’t really thinking of the other badges
You’re naive if you think Ash’s appearance in this is just a coincidence. Time to wake up man.
This game's soundtrack is mostly comprised of songs from the 2.B.A. Master album converted to MIDI format. Stuff like the Orange Islands Intro (Gary), "What Kind of Pokemon Are You?" (Erika) and "My Best Friends" (Blaine).
this is my mother's favourite pokemon game, Lt Surges voice is drilled into my brain thanks to this game
That wave of nostalgia when the mini episode starts playing when you boot up the game. Just like the anime
I agree that this is a hidden gem. It's not for everyone, but it's fun. It helps to enjoy both the Pokemon and Puzzle League franchises in equal measure. I'd recommend you play it to do a video on it, but if you were already getting bored getting footage for the video I don't think doing 15+ rounds of "the same thing but harder and harder" would change your mind. Unfortunately, as you say, the Pokemon skin is mostly just cosmetic. I enjoyed getting to pick a favorite Pokemon in gameplay, but it was really just a personal appreciation and getting to hear their voice clips. But I also love Puzzle League so for me it's just another way for me to play a game I like.
I will say that it's cool that gen 1 didn't have any truly bad games. The bottom two on your list are still very good in my opinion. But something's gotta be at the bottom, right?
Yeah I don’t really intend on going through every game to its completion for the Paraspective so this seemed like enough for me 😅
Always a good time when a new paraspectre video shows up on the feed
I find it a little unusual you didn't mention how impressive their audio/video compression was for the N64 to be able to fit those anime clips on the cart.
Also: which fossil did you take?
I had a lot of fun playing this game as a kid (I was like 10). My mom actually liked it, too. I didn’t know about the history of the puzzle league games so that was a fun history lesson!
It’s very interesting to me that it went from Yoshi to Pokémon in the same series
I loved this game. The university and time zone were too hard for me, and marathon is justice pointless, but I liked taking down the gym leaders and doing the spa. Is not a game one would play all the time, but is a lot of fun to revisit once in awhile.
Especially if you have nostalgia for it. It seemed like a nice distraction game
Always happy to see a vid from you and can't wait for the next one. ^-^
Hey paraspectre, just a few questions about other games you are probably getting to in this series: first I’m excited for the Pokémon puzzle challenge video. Also in your opinion, does Hey You Pikachu for the N64 count as a game?
Love the series btw and it’s always a great day when one comes out
I must say that one of the most ridiculous parts of this game is that all the music is weird midi versions of the Pokemon 2ba Masta soundtrack album. I didn't hear that album until I was an adult after playing this so much as a youngster, and I had a crisis of "HOW DO I KNOW ALL THESE SONGS" until I realized that. Heh.
There is a whole aura of cheapness to the game. I honestly didn’t even notice the songs were ripoffs haha. And I listened to a handful to decide what to play in the background
2:36 I don't know why I laughed so hard when you said "BS"
Just calling it like it says 😎
My favorite Gen is about to come up, the nostalgia is real!
Pokemon Puzzle League was such a staple of family game nights when I was a kid. Everyone in my family was really good at it, so rounds would go on for upwards of ten minutes and things would get so intense. My mom is like a master of puzzle games, so she would usually come out on top. She always picked Sabrina and Abra. Abra's raspy voice still haunts my dreams lmao
That’s awesome. I’ve had a few people tell me that this was a whole family game for them.
Adorable intro!
I remember when this came out, I was so excited. I already loved Tetris Attack on the SNES, so my fave puzzler combining with my favorite RPG franchise was amazing! To this day, it's still my favorite version of Panel de Pon/Puzzle League
And this is my introduction to any of those games. It just escaped my childhood I guess
I love this game so much til this day and I actually started playing again a few days ago on Switch Online.
The game does not start until you unlock the Super hard mode. It is insane.
Guessing by that intro I think I'm probably the same age as you, and I was ALSO disappointed by Yoshi's Story lol
I was a huge fan of Tetris Attack and really had a good time with this game. If you get decent at it the 3D mode is really damn fun and it sucks that the mode never came back in any future puzzle league releases.
Also regarding pokemon stadium, I was lucky enough to play it early when they were doing mall tours before release! It was a minigame tournament before we got to play actual 3D battles with our pokemon, and I managed to win since I somehow figured out the combo system in the Lickitung minigame on my own lol
woooohoooo hes back
this game has some banger ost tho
Im glad i wasnt the only teen who was still into Pokemon. I remember it was a pretty isolating time for me, though when Diamond and Pearl came I found a group of best friends and we would play pseudo competitively despite others mocking us. But eventually, I had to move on to the PS3 and PSP, though I really wish I knew what were the games I actually liked.
It’s kinda funny that now, 3/4 of my viewers are in their late 20s, early 30s
Tetris Attack on SNES outclassed this version in every way. The Yoshi theming was implemented much better and included animations and the soundtrack was great. This version feels so cheap it almost seems like a bootleg.
I really really loved puzzle league as a kid, I would play it for hours on end. I even have a third party n64 controller with a special dpad that is better for it than the regular controllers! Would recommend watching some let's plays of the harder difficulties to see it get a bit more frantic - although PvP is just silly.
Beat Mewtwo a few times as a teenager. Whenever I try to play this game now it makes my thumbs hurt. Haha
8:13 Complete Global Saturation, Ash
Amazing
gen 2 hype
It's deceptively hard
Nice video.
14:17 Doom Puzzle League hahaha
When you're hot you're hot.
"Sweet shades bro". 1st time seeing this game....no wonder why 😂😂. Great vid.
Why were you disappointed with Yoshi's Story, if you don't mind my asking? I remember renting it from Blockbuster as a kid and having a lot of fun with it but it was the only Yoshi game I'd ever (and still have ever) played. Perhaps as someone who's a fan and was looking forward to it you have a different perspective.
I was a HUGE fan of Yoshi’s Island and played that a ton so I was so excited for Yoshi’s Story. It felt so much easier and shorter in comparison and I didn’t really like that eating fruit completed the levels. Maybe if it was my first Yoshi game, I would’ve felt differently
@@Paraspectre Fair enough!
1:16 Oh, I remember that Power Rangers handheld game thing. I played it a bunch on road trips and the like. I have no idea what it's doing here though.
I literally just searched pictures of games at Blockbuster and that showed up. Not a lot of thought went into that ☺️
@@Paraspectre That doesn't make me any less confused. I don't think Blockbusters had those LCD handheld games, did they? I guess it does make the image even more 90s, if nothing else.
Totally tried to watch the ads in the hopes that it helps you as a creator. Made it through a dog themed Wayfair ad but only did one minute of some ad about a mechanical garbage can.
A mechanical garbage can you say.. 🧐
I agree this is the way
Oh dam!
Am I late?
(no middle school graduations, cause we weren’t nerds)
Was Yoshi the first Pokémon?
I feel like this is safe to say. Yoshi preceded Bulbasaur in the same series of games
In the story mode I only got up to mewtwo never beat him.
It's a shame that you're not much of a puzzle game fan but I'll gladly take the Puyo Puyo namedrop.
It was my first time checking out Puyo Puyo too ☺️
@@Paraspectre I know that you aren't fond of the genre, but if you ever felt compelled to explore further, I'd recommend (in no particular order): Puyo Puyo tsu (2), yon (4) and the two Puyo Puyo Tetris games. The latter two are more newcomer friendly as they have:
* Adequately long campaigns that don't take themselves too seriously (they're more on the comedy side of things)
* Decently helpful tutorials
* A mix of Puyo Puyo and Tetris, so you're not just playing one game for multiple hours. There's a decent amount of gameplay variety with the numerous ways they mix and match the two games.
Gen I 1996-2000 - Gen I'ers live on.
Aww, Metroid Prime Hunters is great. :(
I don’t think I really gave it a fair shot. But it was physically painful to play for me.
@@Paraspectre Ohh, if it's because of controls, I can totally understand. My bad lol. I often forget some people can struggle with that. 😅
Wait... you had a graduation ceremony in the 8th grade and then you went to high school?... are you maybe from Slovenia or some other balkan country?
Nope, we had an 8th grade middle school graduation and then high school is grades 9-12.
Fifth!
