Pokemon Puzzle League review on the nintendo 64. Recorded using a dazzle and on original real console hardware and game cartridge.
"I have no friends" lol Well you got one friend in Texas Glenn.
hehe thanks! good to know :)
To this day, this remains my favorite non-main series Pokémon game, and favorite puzzle game of all time, so that’s saying something
I've always liked this game. It's so competitive, addicting, and exiting. It has really cool characters and the controls are easy. Anyone will love it.
The thing that blew my mind my was that it had an anime intro. Even though it was short it was still shocking to see on a N64.
I'm kind of surprise you didn't mention the 3d mode. Sure its not different but still worth nothing.
+Mellow Dude he did
I've never been a big puzzler fan but, when i played Pokemon Puzzle League, i quickly bought this one for my N64. It was so addicting. I still own this one despite not having a working N64. At any rate, it was game i highly recommended to all my N64 owning friends. Loved it!
One of the N64 games my wife and I have the most couch time sunk into. Countless hours. What a blast. You said it perfectly, this is a speed demon of a puzzler.
I picked it up because I saw that it was a tetris re-skin, not because of the pokemon license, but the characters and goofy voice acting do add to the amusement for sure.
This low key may be the best game on the N64, not for the time it came out, but for right now in 2018 it is the N64 cart best worth seeking out in the original physical form. Goldeneye reigned when it came out, but the FPS genre has evolved drasitically. Meanwhile, Tetris Attack was already perfect on the SNES. I've always loved this puzzle series and Pokémon Puzzle League is the best entry because it has the best theming on top of the perfect gameplay which was rightfully kept nigh identical. It has the most playable characters, then 3 Pokémon for each of those characters. The characters and the Pokémon League 1 player storyline hook surpass Tetris Attack's, and the GBA and DS entries didn't even add some thematic hype to the game's contests. This game is especially worth getting physically on the N64 (forgoing emulation) because (1) it's so fast that any input lag is most unwelcome, (2) one goes right into the game by shoving in the game pak and switching the fun machine on, (3) N64 emulation tends to struggle with 2D only games, especially with the glitching of transparencies, and this game is hurt way more than most-any mistake here will make it that much less likely you are able to get into the intense flow state this game makes oh so possible. In 1997, Sony thought CDs were superior because they could, for example, enabled long winded games with better action than film making. Now in 2018, it is a joy to wake up your brain in the morning with a short intense interval of Pokémon Puzzle League. Try it yourself or have a young person try it and see how much of cognitive energy or other benefits could come from it. A 2018 human using a real n64 can still pop in the cart and get swiftly into the game (and hence into the training regimen). An emulator usually isn't booted into... but even if it was, a real N64 would still be faster to gameplay and it would deal better with input lag (more important with this game than most). Playing PPL (Pokémon Puzzle League) on a newer system means a more distracting ecosystem layer on top of evertythimplay a game on than a multipurpose PC, PlayStation, Xbox One Ex, orthe human's fragile flow state, especially important for Puzzle League, is routinely abuse by all sorts of console-company sold ads. Or emulation graphical irregularities might ruin your motivation to try an emulated versiom
Until this day, me and my family have tournaments. I love this game and Tetris Attack
shame it was never released in Japan, because I would have love to of heard Rika Matsumoto as Satoshi, and an instrumental version of 'Aim to be a Pokémon Master' playing on the opening screen.
waterfieldV cool i didnt know that!
I love this game. Love the animated cutscenes, love the soundtrack from the tv series, and love the gameplay (although I suck at the harder difficulties, in games like this all of my victories are flukes). The only two gripes I have, is that the choice of Pokémon does nothing, and I'd wish the human characters had more than one facial expression.
The I have no friends line made me chuckle out loud
This game is a nostalgia childhood I’ve played. Did you know? Pokémon Puzzle League was originally going to make a Japanese-only Nintendo’s Puzzle League is called “Panel de Pon 64” the sequel to Super Famicom (SNES) was Panel de Pon known as Tetris Attack in western title released. Unfortunately, Panel de Pon 64 was cancelled but Nintendo brings Puzzle League series to outside of Japan using Pokèmon theme based on unreleased Panel de Pon 64. It is spiritual sequel to Tetris Attack.
But Panel De Pon 64 Did Get a Release On Nintendo Puzzle Collection Along with Dr. Mario 64 (Never Release in Japan) & Yoshi's Cookie For Nintendo GameCube in Japan
Which makes sense because the Final Stage in Panel De Pon 64 (Unreleased & Nintendo Puzzle Collection) You Get to Fight The Witches But Pokémon Puzzle League (Reskin Of Panel De Pon 64) You Get To Fight Mewtwo
Yeah. Also, there is 4-players mode instead of 2-players mode.
One of the best games on 64
For puzzle game fans it’s a must!
I remember spamming character select on Sabrina because she said “play with me? Play. With. Me.” In a way that made my friends uncomfortable
Haha brilliant 😂
I was first introduced to this type of puzzle game in one of the minigames of Mario Party 3. I liked that minigame so much that Pokémon Puzzle League caught my atention because the dynamic was pretty much the same, and I was a huge Pokémon fan. It's such a refreshing and fun game.
While the characters (and their Pokémon) are mere backgrounds and sounds, I nevertheless wish you could pick a different character in Single Player. Brock was my favorite character and I always wanted to play as him.
Excellent review! You've sold me on this game! I'll have to get a copy of it!
You won't be disappointed!
"I have no friends"
I'd love to play n64 games with this gentleman.
Thanks Luc 😂👍
I remember the secret mewtwo boss and like the absurd levels lol I know after awhile if you keep a combo up the number is replaced by a question mark and whatever audio that would normally play is distorted like it's in a underwater pipe
i remember i found about panel de pon in that 3x1 compilation of nintendo puzzles on gamecube (doctor mario, panel de pon and yoshi´s cookie)
The music in this game was slamming
I dismissed this game when it was released but now I wish I had played it. The graphics look pretty nice for an old puzzle game and I love that they tied in all these classic characters that I love from the anime. If Nintendo does eventually make an N64 mini, I hope they could include this game.
Yeah, definately. Like some abilities in the multiplayer of Tetris DS. Pikachu could use Thunderbolt to change the order of the blocks or "paralyze" the other player etc. would have been a cool thing to see.
A huge fan of this series and this is my fave of them all. Best game on the N64 from the perspective of still playing it today because it's way better on actual hardware than emulation and there's nothing newer and better at the same thing.
I don't use emulators so I cant say how it plays on that but yeah n64 runs great
Best game. It's still addicting 20 years later. Easily the game I've played the most. Wish it would come out again.
It would be cool if they would make a new version of Pokémon Puzzle League that takes place during the Journeys generation of the show.
I really liked tetris attack so i might like this too because i like the pokemon franchise for the most part. I wish they made the pokemon fight in the middle or something though similar to super puzzle fighter for the ps1. Also they should have replaced the bricks with different pokemon that you have to match up. Without those two inclusions it seems like they hardly bothered to do anything with the pokemon on this game other than cash in on the name.
I sold my copy for $5 when I was 7. RIP :,(
Love this game
ImmaLittlePip its certainly a cool one
If I might make a request you should review Flying dragon for the N64 love that game as a kid
Actually bought it today....fun game
Yeah it’s under rated I think
I have two copies of this actually lol. I enjoyed this game very much growing up. I later learned it was a Tetris Attack re skin, but that didn't bother me. Fun fact, the music actually game from the "To Be a Master" soundtrack and some songs from the First movie. I recommend this game to any Pokemon fan out there
Wow... When I first heard of this game, I thought it was gonna suck. The only Pokemon games I really got into on the 64 were Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2. This is better than I thought. I know I'm getting it. Great review.
Yvanna Ortiz This game is one of the best on 64 honestly, competitive, intense, addictive and just fun
@N64 Glenn Plant Speaking of video sequences, Just Like High Quality Motion Video Like Sega CD, PC CD-ROM And PS1
While I do see it as a cheap cash grab, it's still a fun experience, especially since Tetris Attack is such a fun game to begin with.
It's kind of random this game has Ash and Squirtle against Lt. Surge and Magnemite when they didn't even use those Pokemon during their fight in the anime.
I remember playing the Super Nintendo game (different theme I believe - Yoshi?) But I got this game on eBay a few months ago for a decent price. This game is a fun puzzler. I agree the engine is solid. The pokemon theme was just a bonus.
Kinda sad you left out some of the 1-player modes (as there is more than a simple simple store mode availble) and also the "3D" mode, that was added in this game, allowing you to have a tube of blocks with maybe 16 blocks width before looping.
Im your friend Glenn i’ll play Pokemon with ya!
I hate this genre but love Pokemon. I played the demo at Blockbuster but that's all. Might go through this for nostalgia.
the super cheesy voice overs always cracked me up and I used to watch the show years ago (I'm a genwunner).
You should play gen 5. It’s one of my favorite games of all time.
Accidentally posted rough draft after it got scrambled somehow, don't worry I know how to type English, will just have to finish perhaps tomorrow.
Ik this video is old but I've recently got this game for the 64 after playing it years ago and I cant figure out how to get the rest of the characters for 2p mode
I love this game, loved Tetris Attack more but i love pokemon and don't want to grab another SNES so i'm good
Got the game during this summer, and its been in my N64 ever since, getting the most play out of anything in my collection all year, and Ive yet to master the highest difficulty though. Even as a fan of the anime, the voices did get a bit annoying after a while of hearing the same clips over and over, after losing to the harder trainers multiple times. For me, as a pokemon fan, its a 9/10
I don't even like Pokemon, in whole, as a franchise. But this was a damn fun puzzle game.
Harley Quinn You would know Harley, you're my neighbor there.
I never played it, but I love the anomie, I am zoo getting this now!
The Zelda force hope you enjoy it!
Fun game but I hate the voices in it. Minor con though but still worth getting for the N64.
I never even knew this existed. I probably would have picked this up.
Also you have friends Glenn. You have us, your subscribers man!
code470926 haha thanks :)
Damn dude that sucks. I hope you'll find a new one soon.
Blimey. Your knockin em out a lot lately ain't ya. Lol
Can you change the language in the game?
Well i can considered this a quite good game since i'ma fan of puzzle games, but not a fan of pokemons as well. So i let that game from behind since this kind of game appear on other format like the Fairy girl.....Well i don't quite remember the name, but you can already guess who i'm talking about. ^^
was ist fairy girl 64?
I prefer Tetris Attack. Has more personality and better music...
I prefer Tetris Attack's Yoshi's Island theme to be honest. Pokémon just does nothing for me.
I loved the old pokemon anime back in the day. But im too stupid to be good at puzzle games so i really dont care for this game. >_
I am pretty sure i have a gameboy colour version of this game.
thats cool i don't know much about gameboy collecting so didn't even know that would have existed !
Yeah, Pokemon Puzzle Challenge. It's a fun port.
i disliked this game i liked tetris attack more the sounds in this game were anoying with WAY TO GO or whatever line my character would do comeing up way to much the yips and squeeks of the one with yoshi were way better to the point i play that over this
The reviews of this Game were shameful.. excelents scores for a game that can be of Mega Drive only because The Developer was one of The Nintendo studios.
In Europe The Last year of n64 we didnt have Conker or Indiana Jones but hey, dont worry, ammounts of Pokemon piece of shit games like this no body asked for ...
Terrible memories of 2000-2001 Thanks to Nintendo
