To be fair, the starter Pokemon are also the final bosses of the game, since whichever starter your rival picks will be the last pokemon you battle before you beat the game.

That's why it was great to have a younger sibling. "Yeah, just restart the game and we'll trade again. I'll give you something to make the early game easier in exchange". *gives random common pokemon caught later so higher level*

Fun fact: Pikachu’s rarity was purposeful, because the designer (I forget who) wanted it to be kind a sort of secret.

I think they did the same with Ralts and Shroomish in Gen III, only you are given an incentive to find it through NPC dialogue.

My first Pokémon game was also the Blue version : When I was 6 (2004), my mom had no money for a babysitter so she had an arrangement with a very nice neighbor who lived upstairs. She was alone all day because her son left home a few years ago. Her son was a big fan of video games. I remember seeing a few Zelda games and a GBA SP...
She was nice (and her son too apparently, even tho I've never met him) because she let me borrow her son's Gameboy Color and his copy of Pokémon Blue. It was my first Nintendo experience too, as I've played older PC games so far (yup, 6 year old and already addicted to computers, who knew this would be my job ?). I loved Pokémon Blue, even if the copy had some progress and I couldn't understand the story and most mechanics. I remember not knowing the existence of the START menu and saving the game by switching boxes in the PC lol.
Later, my neighbor let me borrow her son's copy of Pokémon Silver and I remember looking at the cartridge for days, wondering what Pokémon stands on the sticker... This was the best of times. I used a flashlight to be able to play in my bed at night (you know the drill). Got caught a few times but it was all fun in the end. Later I moved. I wanted to keep the GBC and games with me, as my neighbor never asked to get them back but I don't know why, I gave them back to her. Maybe I've felt that if I kept them, her son might have been upset, as it was probably good memories for him too...
Later, I managed to get my father to buy me a used GBA SP and I got a few Pokémon games, starting with the Crystal version, which I initially thought was a fake game because nobody at school heard about it (What did I expect, I was 6 years late !). Crystal was my favorite game that time. I had some good memories with other GB/GBA games, but I remember Pokémon to be the best. I've also spent too much time playing Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team when I was 12 instead of sleeping. Good times. I will never forget.

I don't know for America, but in Europe they too released the anime first for legal reasons.
In Europe, at least at the time, releasing an anime for a video-game was considered an advertisement, so you had to release the anime first, then say that the game is merchandising for the anime, to avoid that law. At least, it's the excuse given by the french team ^^

Yo dawg, my older brother’s best friend told me he found out how to catch Mew. You have to use surf before S.S. Anne and then use strength on the truck. Then Bill shows up and challenges you to a battle. This is super important: YOUVE GOTTA LOSE THE BATTLE!! After you loose, Mew appears and pushes Bill into the water. Then it joins your team. I promise you it’s true! He showed me his game, and he doesn’t even own a GameShark.
There were so many of these “cheats” on the Internet back in the day. Hilarious that eventually an exploit was found that did let you catch Mew.

I remember one of the playground rumors going around when I was a kid was that if you beat the Elite Four some ridiculous number of times (Like... 500 or 1000, I think?) you'd get your own gym. Then you could press the B button to conjure random Trainers to challenge.
Then Gen 7 happened and they actually did frame E4 rematches as you protecting your Champion title. I think there's something like that in the postgame of Gen VIII too? Still looking for a Pokemon game where you play as a Gym Leader though. Or another Colosseum/Gale of Darkness-like. Or, heck, remakes of either of those games.

Note: Parasect was also 4 times weak to Poison in Gen 1, given that Bug and Poison were weak to each other, making it the only fully evolved Pokémon in the franchise's history to have 3 4x weaknesses. Truly an awful situation for our little friend.

  • @AtlaS_GPP

Ok ok ok... I've been drinking. I want to absolutely preface this with the fact that I absolutely LOVED your video. I've subbed and notifications are on. I want to see your channel grow because you've got the IT factor.
My only critiques/advice (and PLEASE do not take this as anything negative with the formula you've got going on):
    1) Your origins based information in the beginning was excellent. I've been playing pokemon since it came out in NA back in '98. I'm currently 27. Please please PLEASE keep this up. I actually learned a lot about the original games just based on your first 10 minutes. It's a throw back for me to when I was younger and could not fully grasp all of this information.
    2) The majority of viewers that will be watching your videos are fairly well seasoned pokemon players/viewers. Your post-intro to this video is beginner based, and perhaps an ideal way to start the series. I would pursue this with the understanding that the basics and fundamentals of the mechanics are covered with viewers and treat it chronologically.
    3) The weird facts are always the head scratchers and even if one has heard them before, it's always is a good reminder of how much depth these games truly have to offer.
    4) The step by step of the story of the game is also always a good way to bring back memories as well for viewers who have not physically played these games in years/decades.
    5) Each game following Red/Blue/Green all introduce different mechanics in battle and/or general gameplay. This (I think) is always one of the most interesting concepts for someone that has a better-than-average IQ for pokemon. It makes one think about how they use to play the game as opposed to how they would play it now having known these mechanics.
    6) Even if none of this pertains to your vision of the series, I'll still watch all of them all. It's an excellent start, and I truly did enjoy it!
Keep up the good work, man! I see you doing very well and being successful with this series!

  • @licidy1
    @licidy1 2 роки тому +5

I feel like this video missed that when the games first released, the internet was NOT widely accessible. If I wanted to go online, I had to go to the local library or be in my school's computer class. Type weakness/resistance was entirely logic-leaps and trial-error! Couldn't figure out how to wake snorlax? Then you were SOL until the anime gave you clues about tracking down a hippie with a flute. My entire grade was in the dark about how to get garyados until we saw James accidently evolve his magikarp one Saturday morning. If you had a strategy guide then you were the go-to pokedex for all your friends!

  • @HighPriestFuneral

I really like that you are looking at the games within their own timeframe instead of applying what we now know about them. There's a bit of tongue-in-cheek merit in doing so, but this approach feels more grounded, especially with your personal anecdotes from the era.

I dig the branding. Parasect is a really cool Pokemon that suffers from being barely viable in its debut game thanks to the awful movesets available to all gen 1 bug Pokemon and having never been prominent in any of the media tie-ins. I would never think of combining Parasect and S.P.E.C.T.R.E., but now that you've done it (great logo, by the way), it almost seems natural.

Nintendo Power is what got me into Pokemon. I remember making sure to watch the premiere of the anime, which happened to be the pilot episode (Battle Aboard the St Anne). I downloaded a rom of Blue when the games came out, played with Bulbasaur (because I knew he was "easy mode.") Got Blue and a Game Boy Pocket that Christmas, went Blastoise.

Hey man great start to the series! Really looking forward to the rest of it!
But if I may, can I make a suggestion? Well, two really but they're related...if you're not using a pop-filter, you probably should be. Your P's are very loud and cutting, it's called a "plosive". Anyway, you don't have to buy one, literally just wrap your mic in a swiffer pad or two, or a hand towel, or find some way of holding the swiffer pad somewhere between your mouth and the mic when recording. That's number one. Number two, also audio related, I always run my final mix through a normalizer and compressor if I haven't done any compression during the rest of the process. They're audio effects in premiere, and will make sure everything is around the same volume so you don't blow headphone users away lol. Just some advice, obviously you do not have to listen to me, do what you think is best!

3:32 and relevant to 6:19 - According to bulbapedia (which has a source), the Pokemon anime actually debuted in the US on September 7, 1998 and actually ran for about 14-15 episodes before the games released on September 28, 1998; so for a lot of kids, the games were not their first taste of Pokemon, and they wouldn't exactly be going in blind. Though it is weird how they barely used Pikachu in the marketing for these games; I guess they didn't think he would be that popular at the time?

I loved it because of the anime... I named my protagonist Ash... as did all of my fellow elementary school kids...

I'm not so sure about that. All the Pokemon names were also in Caps, and also all the other named buildings such as POKE and MART.

OKAY! So I stumbled upon your channel after a good friend suggested I check out some of Mah-Dry-Bread's Pokemon Challenges, which led me to his Pokemon TCG Playthrough, which of course led me to you. I absolutely freaking love your content. Literally just finished all your TCG Videos thus far. But what really reeled me into this video (and I've barely started it) was your comment about how this is too big an undertaking, so here's Part 1. I'm hooked!

tbh, i think 12 and 13 were better ages to be into pokemon when it first hit, i was 7, and was not brave or clever enough to try & get around pokemon card bans at school, so i never got to trade any. all the kids i knew that were also into pokemon were older than me, and doing stuff like getting to go to the stores to play with other kids wasn't something my parents were willing to do when i was that young. then it took gen 2 too long to show up & i didn't really get a social experience with the games until gen 4.

    • @Paraspectre
      @Paraspectre  Рік тому +1

That’s a fair point. You’re able to think more critically and plan things out more at 13 than at 7. I always felt “embarrassed” that I was into this supposed kid’s game at that age though. It’s so funny now that the demographic for my videos is easily late 20s - early 30s

29:17- I like seeing people lament that they were already too old when getting into it at 13 when people like myself got into it at say 17.

I first got started with the card game. By the time that Fossil was about to come out, I traded 4 playsets of the at the time still new Jungle set, along with a 1st ed set of jungle for a friend's brand-new Game Boy Color and several other games. Then, I bought Pokemon Blue before going on a road trip.. I don't know how much money I lost on that trade. I try not to think about it.

Pokemon wasn't a thing invented for NA - it was originally used on the back of the Japanese boxes too.
Double Kick also wasn't learned on Nidoran until the mid 40's in Red and Blue. This was changed to level 12 in Yellow Version
