    I stand with you Joe. I too will not allow my high end knives or any of my convex grinds hit a machine.

      Absolutely not. I am not critiquing this or any other electronic sharpening system but I am very picky on the edge I have on my blades I want precise control over it through the entire process. Now blades that I view as strictly tools, such as my edc folders, tools such as these are invaluable to me in time savings and convenience. Thanks!

    It was like fingernails on a chalkboard when you were tapping that blade on the brick. Then the hammer about made my heart jump. Even though it was a Wally World knife, that was just brutal to watch. I have the Work Sharp Original so I don't see a need for this particular product. But a darn good review as usual. I use my Work Sharp from the side (instead of straight on) and just flip the knife around from left to right hand, so I'm actually using the same side of the guide system. I like the belt to run up towards the spine on both sides as to minimize the wire like burr.

      lol! I have a half a dozen of these Walmart specials just for projects such as this. If they break to the point of being unusable, then I'm only out a couple bucks. In other words, I bought these specifically to break. If you currently own worksharp, this is totally redundant unless like in my case where family members will use this and not the bigger version. Thanks!

    Thank you for sharing the knowledge Joe! I don't know if you ever tried but if you use a white pencil eraser on that ceramic rod it will clean the metal right off removing all the metal and it will cut like new again. Take care.

    I'm liking the item. I agree the motor need to go in reverse to get a equal grind on both sides.

    Definitely looks like a worthwhile tool if they come out with additional grits. God bless and stay safe.

    different grit belts, reversible motor, a way to change the angle (different faceplate I would guess)...
    for $60 I think it needs more. I wouldn't spend more than $35 for it as is.
    thanks for the video and review

    • @ALWhiteAuthor
      @ALWhiteAuthor 8 років тому +3

      I fully agree. For $60 you can get the standard work sharp and have multiple angles, belts, abrasive materials... With it being so limited, the price definitely needs to come down.

      I use the Blade Grinding Attachment for that. It does a fantastic job. Granted you have to do it free hand but it works if you get the angle right. Thanks Robert!

    excellent video Joe! You showed it's capabilities and then some. I agree a few different grits would make this more worth it. I wonder if it uses the same belt as the regular ws or wsko?

      @feralwoodcraft  8 років тому +1

      Thanks Micah! Nope, these are considerably shorter belts. It'd be awesome if they ere the same though. Thanks again my friend!

    They do make different grits, you can get them from Amazon " 1/2 X 10 Inch Fine 800 Grit / Ultra Fine 5000 Grit Knife Sharpener Sanding Belts, 10 Pack Assortment (For Work Sharp WSCMB Combo Knife Sharpener)" hope this helps.

    • @tim-oates
      @tim-oates 8 років тому +1

      There really aren't better belts available - just cheaper ones. To me, cheap belts are like cheap tires. They don't perform well and they don't last very long. Work Sharp uses Norton NORaX and Micro-Mesh belts for the Blade Grinding Attachment - the same belts used on full sized machines by manufacturers and professionals. This pdf gives a good overview of the technology engineered into NORaX belts without getting super-technical:
      prod.abrasives-cn.saint-gobain.com/uploadedFiles/SGabrasives-cn/Documents/CA_005NoraxGeneral.pdf

    • @feralwoodcraft
      @feralwoodcraft  8 років тому

      Tim is right. I've used several different brands of belts and while there are some that are probably just as good, they are more expensive in these sizes. No reason not to go with the Worksharp branded ones. Keep in mind that while I did burn up one entire belt in this video, I was doing something it wasn't specifically designed for.

      @Tim Oates. You hit the nail on the head. Excellent link sir, thank you!

  • @MasterK9Trainer

    I think the sharpener is cool, but why couldn't they have created another guide for it. Making a blade to thin makes it weaker and making a kitchen knife less shallow will not allow it to be sharp enough for slicing tomatoes or trimming the fat from meat. Seems like such an oversight. Taking the guide off though was very clever.
    I bought one of those Walmart folders you modified for bushcraft and used in this video. That specific model seems to sell the quickest.

  • @feralgrandad4429
    @feralgrandad4429 8 років тому +1

    I like it. but damn it'll be expensive this side of the pond. but I predict they'll sell a shed-load of um.

    • @feralwoodcraft
      @feralwoodcraft  8 років тому

      I bet they will too. Like I said somewhere in the vid, while it is a niche tool, it's big niche and it fits it well. Thanks Jason!

    8:41 Even though it's a $3 POS folder from Wally World, I still cringed a little when you snapped the tip clean off with that hammer lol.
    As others have said, the price definitely needs to come down on this. I know it's brand new and everything, but 60 bucks is really expensive for what this thing is. One fixed angle, only one grit of belt included, and one speed make this an extremely limited and simplistic sharpener for 60 bucks. I could see paying 30-40 for this thing, but nothing more. I mean, the original Work Sharp with 3 different belts included is only 10 bucks more ($70) on Amazon!
    Lol just my opinion and my 2 cents. Great video as always, Joe!

    Where do you get the replacement belts at?

  • @survivalofthefittest409
    @survivalofthefittest409 8 років тому

    Thanks for the review. I got a few questions, would that thing work with big blades such as an Esee 5? Also would that one belt be able to put a 90 on your spines? Last question would be, like you said it would be nice to have more options (belts, reverse, etc) so my question is for the price point you could pretty much buy the old WorkSharp with the 3 belts and more options so to someone that has neither, which would you pick? Thanks!

    • @feralwoodcraft
      @feralwoodcraft  8 років тому

      I wasn't even aware the old worksharp was till available. I bought a ken onion model over a year ago for about twice the price of this. If you can still get the old model worksharp at a comparable price....definitely get it over this. This definitely has it's place but the older one can do more.
      To answer your other questions. I haven't tried to put a 90 on with it. I feel pretty confident that you could but you'd have to be comfortable free handing it at an awkward angle. You wouldn't have a guide. I can't say for sure if it would work on an ESEE 5, I've never even held one in my hand. Sorry bud.

    • @survivalofthefittest409

      Thanks, yea I've seen the old model lots of places, midwayusa-amazon-ebay etc for usually between 60-70 bucks. Thanks for the info though!

    that's the second generation feral woodcrafter you mentioned in your review of the original isn't it??? isn't it!! :-)

    • @feralwoodcraft
      @feralwoodcraft  8 років тому

      No actually it isn't. It is a bit different then the one you're used to seeing. My other one is making the rounds for other channels to look at. This one is actually a factory boo boo. Blackfeather accidentally took the recurve a bit too far and had to scrap it and start over. I told them to put a sweet set of scales on the thing and sell it to me, so they did.
      Version 2 is still in the planning stages. Thanks!!
