    I don't believe advertising and celebrity endorsement have been responsible for Chanel 5's success. The scent itself is absolutely stunning and ineluctable. There is nothing like it. Once smelled, one can never forget. Magic!

    This is a fascinating episode! I am still watching and have just listened to the history of No 5. Interestingly, my 12 year old nephew is getting into fragrances. We went on a scent safari together and as soon as he smelled No 5 his eyes lit up. Not knowing anything about the perfume he exclaimed, “Aunt Emily, this is the best perfume I have ever smelled!” I always thought of No 5 as a mature fragrance but to a young nose with no preconceived ideas, it’s the perfect fragrance for him ♥️

      That's really interesting isn't it?! I really wouldn't have expected that in some ways, but in another, to me it smells like 80s bubble bath and I find that comforting. Its got strong childhood associations for me though perhaps because my mum wore it quite often in the 80s. I wonder whether many other children think that?!

    Re: the original formulation of Bandit, it was actually much softer. I have a vial of it from 1948 and its has a surprising soft, floral aspect to it. The galbanum and artemisia blend into the background in the dry down and make it a much quieter and intimate fragrance (but still very unusual when you get up close - there's a certain something you can't put your finger on, very queer in all senses of the word ;) ) The current formulations (from 2010 onwards, can't speak to the older formulations) are amped up to meet our present olfactory sensibilities. There's also an inability to rely on the original, organic fixatives and ingredients used by Cellier (she was famous for her Celli-nade, a la Guerlain's Guerlinade, which gave her compositions a rich backbone and depth and which was sadly lost with her passing), so much if the complexity and genius of her compositions are lost in modern translations.
    And thank you so much for the wonderful history of Marlene and Edith. I was aware of Marlene's relationship with the fragrance but didnt know that Edith had a history with it (or with Marlene!) too.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  2 місяці тому +1

      I think Edith is reputed to have worn quite a few fragrances over the years, I do wonder how much is myth now! Interesting to hear about the original formulation, I can imagine the new version is pretty different from your description. I found it a difficult wear. It's a shame it's not more similar to the intention. Thanks for watching 🥰

    Hi Claire! What an interesting and educational video! I don't really like Narciso Rodriguez for Her; maybe I'm anosmic to it, but all I can smell is some weird sour musk. Regarding Bandit, I sampled it, and it smells around 90% similar to Cabochard in my opinion. They’re both stunning leathery chypres, not for the faint of heart. I'd recommend the newest version of Cabochard; it's just a touch sweeter than Bandit, and I get no tobacco, just woody notes, oakmoss, and leather. Despite trying many vintage fragrances, Cabochard and Bandit still shocked me. I had no idea Bandit was Marlene Dietrich’s signature scent.
    Believe it or not, I started working on a video about perfume history just yesterday. I’ll go through my entire collection decade by decade. Anyway, have a good weekend!😊

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  7 місяців тому +2

      I think the Narciso Rodriguez musk is very divisive isn't it? I can't say I love the EDP or musc noir, but I love fleur musc and musc noir rose.
      Bandit was a lot for me 🤣 it was so strong! I don't think it's very friendly at all. I looked up what Marlene and Edif were reputed to have worn and it seems like both have many fragrances associated with them, so who knows overall, but both were reputed to have worn Bandit at some point. I didn't try Cabochard, but wow I bet that's some price difference too! Robert Piguet is pricey!

    I knew that there was a connection between SJP and Narciso Rodriguez both loving Egyptian musk! I had heard that but couldn't recall the exact details, I'm so glad you included that tidbit. I wore For Her when it first came out, and loved that musky dry down. I retried it recently in the stores and it just doesn't smell the same to me. Same with Bandit, my mom wore that one and I loved it. But, when I tried it recently from a perfume swap I didn't care for it at all. I love your videos! Thanks for this one.

      I didn't ever own NR for her EDT but I first tried it many years ago and I recently tried it again and I also didn't think it was the same, but I wasn't sure whether it was just my memory of it being inaccurate. 🤷‍♀️ Maybe it's been reformulated? It's probably quite likely in 20 years...
      Bandit for me is a bit of a struggle. I'm quite surprised by how soapy it is and also how much it reminds me of a diesel exhaust at points... I really was expecting something more definitely leathery. I wonder what the other formulations smelt like? 🥰

    This is a very good introduction video and certainly whetted our appetite to learn more about perfumery. Yes, the smell of Narcisso Rodriguez for Her EDT is very sensual like you wear it as your second skin.
    Do you know that Chanel no 5 has its own older twin in Russia? It is called the Red Moscow or Krasnaya Moskva. While Ernest Beaux managed to escape Russia before the revolution, unfortunately the creator of the Le Bouquet Favori de L' Imperatrice Catherine (Krasnaya Moskva) stayed in the factory in Moscow because he lost his passport. Krasnaya Moskva was a very famous perfume during Soviet Era. I wonder how does it smells like? It was very despicable of Coco Chanel to become associated with Nazi.
    I was searching for Bandit and Fracas for the past 2 months (after watching your video 2 months ago) but couldn't find them in physica stores. Robert Piguet must be a legend since he had trained Dior, Balmain and Givenchy. I wonder how Fracas smells like? Maybe it smells like Carnal Flower by Frederic Malle? I can imagine Bandit's bad girls image, a smell of domineering type of girl who likes to wear leathery and rubbery jacket with motorcycle.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  5 місяців тому +1

      I did not know that there was another contemporary similar fragrance to Chanel no5, that's interesting.
      With the Piguet fragrances, you can perhaps order a sample set, I am not sure all have Bandit, but I think all have Fracas. I did manage to try Fracas in store about a year ago, I thought it was lovely and just a better quality version of Madonna Truth or Dare really. Of the two, Bandit is the much more challenging wear. It's thick! Thanks for watching 🥰

    Hello Claire, thank you so much for this fascinating video. I have a little story to share with you related to Chanel n° 5. I went in Bruxelles to an "Atelier" organised by the house of Guerlain and the speaker told us about an anecdote. As master perfumers and far fewer than now, Jacques Guerlain and Ernest Beaux were at the restaurant having dinner. They knew each other everybody in the perfume world knew the other masters perfumers. As they were having fun, and drank quite a lot, they were a bit "tipsy" and had this wonderful idea to challenge the other. The purpose of the game was to "copy" the best seller of the other one. So Ernest Beaux has to copy Shalimar and Jacques Guerlain has to copy Chanel n° 5. No news about Ernest Beaux , but Jacques Guerlain as a man of his words worked on it, and he realised "Liu" in 1929. The similarity is absolutely inchanting and the thing is, even the perfume is very very next to the Chanel, he managed to let a little hint of his wonderful Guerlinade. It's a masterpiece to copy somebody remaining himself despite everything. I'm so admirative ! He told for the marketing that this perfume was inspired by Puccini 's opera Turandot. Thank you again for your work, I love your scientist approach, and thank you also for your real work, I'm a nurse ! I wish you a wonderful year and a strong health. Greetings from Belgium.

    What a fantastic video.
    Love the story behind NR, yes musks do have such a strong great carnal power. The bottle is great. Well SJP could have maybe just brought a bottle without copying it 🙄.
    Rasputin has such an incredible story around him. Coco certainly has a very "colourful" story behind her. Interesting beginnings to collaborating traitor. Money and greed definitely does bad things to humans. Ch5 really is a special one and yes ylang-ylang is a big part of it. I guess that was a great way of marketing too, obviously very shrewd. The bottle certainly is iconic too.
    Piguet sounds like quite a character. No Fracas is wow. I need to get Bandit sniffed. The bitter green could be a struggle for me. Though sweat and cig smoke sounds very good. The floral bits too. And haha in a word "no" 🤣. Yes green leather smells of well "green" on me, not a love. I think you could wear it to Asda 😉. I love the story behind it all to and it's associations. Marlene was quite a woman. Weird a woman condemning a far right evil lunatic gets u basically hated and banished yet supporting weirdly the very same man made another lass a great hero 🤔🙄. I think Rishi is an idiot too. But yes 🤣.
    Thanks Dr Claire ❤️ loved this video, it was brilliant. I want more like this. I know that White Rose (& Beef Dripping) was worn by Elizabeth Windsor and Harry and Meghan wore Bergamotto from Floris too. That is all 🤣

    • @dr.claire.perfume

      Yeah I think Coco was just so desperate to be rich that she really had zero morals. But at least she never regained control of the fragrance business. I would love to know how the French view her, hero or villain.
      Bandit is just very dense and smokey isn't really the right word, it's more like smog, almost burning fuel. It's not the same or even similar, but the blackness of it made me think of that black to black by Mancera that made me think of diesel. Good luck with it. Did you like any of the samples that you have apart from Fracas? I think Bandit would turn many heads in Asda.
      It is really odd isn't it? Germany had turned their back very abruptly on fascism by the 1960s but yet Marlene was being spat at, it makes me wonder if there was more to it or whether the propaganda machine was really making such a massive and long held mark on people's views. 🤔
      I think maybe the Queen liked roast beef and it stuck, or maybe she just never paid much attention to the fragrance but there are distinct whiffs of Sunday lunch there. 😂
      I can't wait to hear what you think of bandit! 🥰

      I love these videos too! Although I don’t really agree that Chanel was taken advantage of. She made a legitimate contract that she later regretted. Thank you! I really enjoy researching these! Bandit was a huge shock to my nose! It is so so strong! 🤣
      Sadly I think Chanel was just hungry for success with her fragrance business and made bad decisions. Then she tried to go back on the deal, but in one of the worst ways possible. I think in France she is viewed by some as a collaborator and so not looked upon fondly. What she did was pretty low. I'm happy the Wertheimer brothers saw that coming and made sure they were protected, sadly so many other people in similar situations weren't protected and lost much more than their businesses.
