Mine have done great in summer in partial shade. My father has a barrel in pretty direct sun, but has wrapped the barrel in Reflectix (aluminized bubble wrap) and it's also doing well.

What about wrapping the barrel with insulation…with the silver film on the outside?

I built a trellis out of 2x2s to surround my barrel to let the runners drape over when my plants were producing. I noticed the top of the barrel was getting too hot so I screwed a thin piece of plywood to block the top of the barrel from the sun..worked for me

I'm in zone 6 and grew a cucumber in a blue barrel outside on the concrete last summer and it did great. Right out in the sun. We got plenty hot last year and the only problem I had was cucumber beetles, but a little 7 dust took care of them. If I was real worried about it, I'd paint the barrel white. That would help a bunch.

I can’t remember what variety I used last year, but it did great. This year my cucumber plant died about a week ago. Once the temp got into the 90s it got too hot and died. I’m going to try it again but put my barrel under some shade.

    Three more suggestions.
Wrap the barrel with material that can be soaked with water.
Soak the material in the morning.
As the water evaporates, it will keep the barrel cool.
This one will take additional water.
Put the barrel in a larger container and fill the container with water making sure there is some protection from the sun.
You could also build a box that is larger than the barrel, put the barrel in the center and fill the outside of the barrel with sand. Wet the sand, and as it evaporates, the barrel will stay cool.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Wrap the barrel with burlap and spray some water on it.
Alternatively, drop the barrel into the ground to the same height as the water container.

You have to keep in mind that not everyone has a back yard that would enable them to dig a hole that large and deep.
Additionally, not everyone is going to dig a hole that large and deep.
That's why Leon rejected the hole in the ground idea to begin with and why I did not suggest it.

The sure to work suggestion is to build 4 square panels with 2x4 boards the height and width of the barrel, then insert into the middle of those panels foam insulation.
Use those panels to build a box around the barrel.
Then cut a foam circle for the top of the barrel.
You can try wrapping the barrels with silver reflective panels.
You can also try painting the barrel white.

Had four tan colored 55 gallon barrels last summer in northern Illinois. They were in a 2 cattle panel open ended encloser, covered with plastic to keep the rain from diluting the fertilizer. I used whatever plants Home Depot had, Bonnie straight eights, and others. Everything grew incredible from Mothers Day, all the way through September. The experiment this year is I added another barrel, for butternut squash Thanks Leon!

Put a blanket or cover over the barrel. Like you would for a cooler on a hot summer day. Heat reflective paint was also effective for something similar in the past

Thanks Leon. My suggestion to keep the water in a container cool is putting into a larger container with air space around it so that the outer container (preferably white/painted white OR covered with reflective mylar) absorbs any sun without transferring the heat to the water. This may mean using the larger barrel as the outer layer and finding a smaller one to set inside.

Could you paint the barrel white and maybe have a shade cloth over it.

    • @IBExcalibur
      @IBExcalibur 2 місяці тому

Just my opinion, shade cloth is a fair idea and it might help a little bit it's more of the air temperature that will cause the water temperature to rise.

A gentleman in Kansas called me just now saying he has grown cukes in a fiberglass 65 gallon barrel that he painted white and has no problem growing cukes all summer !! So some people are having good results !!!
Even the insulation wrap might be a solution !! If you try anything that works or not !! Just let me know !!!! Thanks Leon !!! Happy Gardening!!!

I used your barrel method works really well, but what I noticed is the PH rises as the plant uses the water. I keep my barrel out of direct sun light with the top sticking out.

What if you built a wooden box with old pallet wood, place to barrel in the box and stuff the surrounding with straw. it should insult against the heat as long as there is some air movement in there

Just make sure you know exactly what was in the barrel. Farm chemical are shipped in some and other crazy stuff. JMO!!
Same happens with the big totes that everyone buys. Again chemicals and even oil are shipped in them.
Just because it says food grade doesn't mean it had food product in it.

Aeration cools water and provides oxygen to the roots. I don't know whether or not aeration will lower the water temperature enough but it might. Also, painting the barrel white will help.

Aquarium places would sell chillers for tanks but if one has upteen tubs that would not be efficient If one or two with an outside recepticle for electric that most likely would work to keep the water cooler

Leon, I've had 2 beautiful tomatoes out of 6 completely wilt over night? Followed your instructions to a tee and used all new materials? It looks like Fusarium or Verticulum wilt...what did I do wrong? Hope you can respond to this and do I need to discard all my potting mixture in the affected containers?

I'm down in North Texas. We've had 3 years of drought, this year plenty of rain. However, my Bermuda grass is not coming up. Only perennial ryegrass, weeds and some pioneer species.
Is my Bermuda dead and should I try to reseed or is it just slow to recover. I don't want to have to feed hay this time of year, it makes no sense or cents.

Shade cloth? I see a youtuber in NC using 40 percent shade cloth when the heat sets in to help his garden get thru the summer. Tomatoes and peppers are originally understory plants and benefit from the shade. Don't know about cukes but perhaps?
