I was in my early 30s when I went to this show .Saw Zep in great form in1969 & 70. At Live Aid they were ragged BUT the guy next to me was 17 and for him hearing Stairway to Heaven LIVE right in front of you was a dream come true. It was a great moment flaws and all.
Agree; most of the acts at Live Aid played professionally structured and crafted sets. LED Zep goes out there a complete mess just winging it. That’s Rock and Roll!!

Robert Plant: "It's been a long time since I've Rock and Rolled"
Me: ye I can tell
He did sound a bit hoarse but you need to be able to hear yourself through the monitors. They were set up while already on stage. Not much of a sound check either.
Ironically if Plant had as originally billed played a solo set rather than this reunion we'd probably have got a much better performance. Certain a properly rehearsed one.
HAHAHAHAHHAA BIGTIME ahahaha
@Randy Rodes JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAH YESSS BIGTIME
@Randy Rodes And to think that in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie QUEEN is actually threatened as in "after not rehearsing in a long time you are going to play next to bands such as LED ZEPPELIN, ELTON JOHN, DAVID BOWIE. .... AND THEY STILL STOLE THE SHOW !!!
At least Jimmy Page's girlfriend was not embarrassed by his performance at the 1985 Live Aid concert since she wasn't even born.
😂😂😂
haha thats brutal dude

Top notch comment my friend
Ouch!!! 😁
I just finished reading Phil Collins book and he talks a lot about this particular show. Robert Plant asked him to do something with just the two of them. And then he said we'll bring Jimmy along. And then he said John Paul Jones will be joining as well. And then Phil found out they were practicing with another drummer while he was stuck in England. By the time he flew over on the Concorde he said Jimmy was already out of his mind and the environment was somewhat toxic. He really didn't even want to go on but they had made such a big deal about him flying over on the Concorde that he had to do it. And some parts during this show he even air drummed where he didn't want to compete with the other drummer who had practiced and was not thrilled that Phil was the second drummer. Overall Phil felt the performance was pretty much a train wreck.
he shoulda stayed in England...he wanted to be bigger than the event itself...
This is 100% correct. He was a total cornball ham then. 80s version of Dave Grohl
Dude. Just look at whole lotta love. He don't know the song. The one Who did a meses was Phil Collins.
Couldn't agree any more. All of you were horrible.
The other drummer was the late great Tony Thompson. Tony was highly respected as a "timepiece" and had some powerful chops. But it seems like everyone in the band had set their clock to a different time zone. At least Tony put it on his resume and moved on down the road...🎩🎼🎩

We didn't.

I know it wasn't good, but I was there. In the excitement of the moment, they sounded good.

The fact that Jimmy Page had the audacity to blame this atrocity on Phil Collins astounds me.
Jimmy page was an arrogant asshole to other musicians and his fans. How many songs did he not write and attribute them to "page-plant?" Douche.
He wrote all the songs you douche
Doesn't matter douche. Respect your craft and the paying audience. A douche is not be responsible. Lord jimmy looked like a douche up there.
This comment was read out on the Do Go On podcast about Live Aid this week! 😂😂😂
Never underestimate the arrogance of this washed up douche. How many songs did he attribute to "page-plant" when they didn't write them. A-hole.
Im 55 years old, Graduated high school in 1986 and I just wanted to say that i absolutely Love Led Zeppelin.... I wish I could personally thank all 4 of them, Robert, Jimmy, John Paul and John B. Thank you for all the great Rock and Roll Music and wonderful memories associated with it... Thank you, Thank you, Thank you a million times over. Your music is part of the soundtrack of my life!!!!
You got to give them credit. They knew they were blowing it bad in front of a billion people world wide but they kept on playing.

Love how Robert Plant knew the stairway solo was tragic and going nowhere and so just puts an end to it-

I was down in front the whole time they were on stage. I had a great time.
I'm sure you did. However, you didn't hear great music, you heard a very shambolic performance from one of the greatest bands ever.

If they ever make a zeppelin biopic, live aid would definitely not be their ending scene.
It would be at the most, referenced - as an awful disaster...
Knebworth would be a good one.
It would be very funny end.
Celebration day should be the ending
It would probably be the band announcing they were done after Bonhams tragic passing
For all the critics on here who weren't even born yet, in 1985, when this happened, when it seemed as though it would NEVER happen again, this was the greatest thing in the world.
All bands have bad moments. Zeppelin will remain great.

The performance was as speacial as any other performance…it’s the cause and they came together and did the best they new how… they deserve our support and applause..!!
pretty sure 90% of the audience didn't mind.... it was the band themselves who got mad at their own performance, rightfully so..but, then blamed it on poor Phil Collins.
It sounds awful. They were terrible.
1st of all. It was the sound at this entire concert that caused the bad recording of this. Go back and watch any of the Live Aid concert and you realize it wasn't that the bands suck. It was the quality of the sound and certainly the recording equipment. I was glued to my parents tv for most of it. Poor Phil catches grief for his performance and that's mainly because the camera guy kept panning to just him and not the other drummer who was bashing the crap outta the 1st song. You gotta give them all credit for even being there and realize how hard it was for them to try and do this on a moments notice. Led Zeppelin hadn't played together in over 5 years up until this moment. Im still very grateful for this and had they chosen to reconcile, I would've been 1st in line for tickets and buying all the following albums. Long Live Led Zeppelin, Rock n Roll will never die. ❤
John Paul Jones deserves respect.way more respect.
He is the only class act in Zep.

@@binaychhetri6984 How so? I would like for you to expand on that point if you please. Really, the insight is valuable and appreciated.
Listening to Zeppelin's last performance ( Berlin, 7th July, 1980 ) is listening to the showcase of a wreckage with only Jonesy holding it all together.
Like Entwistle, Jones was "the quiet one" who deserved more recognition and meters on film. All things considered, both drummers here did great.

I honestly think Phil had the most impossible shoes to fill and did a great job filling them
You could tell by the passion that Phil had a love for Bohham and tributted him well on this set.
That smile that Robert gives looking at Jimmy at 12.36. I always think what was he thinking in his mind at that precise moment.
He was thinking "Damn Jimmy, you're higher than eagle piss"

For Gen X this was huge. The only chance we got, as teenagers, to see Zep was in 1980 - and then Bonham died. And they said, "forget it!" - they weren't touring again, ever.
So - five years later, it was huge that they were gonna do a live set - with Peak Phil Collins, no less. It was really a testament to how big an event Live Aid really was.
It may not have been 1972 Led Zeppelin, but that there was any LZ at all was a big deal.
Agreed, really shitty performance but even then it’d be awesome to see them anyway

This comment deserves an award
John Bonham is a true martyr, he saved Led Zeppelin from the 80's.
Lmao oof
Omg lol
If Bohnam survived, I wonder if Zeppelin would have jumped on to the "Hair Metal" bandwagon.
nah, after Bonham's death that Jimmy went 3 years without picking up the guitar and sank into drugs (which explains his shitty performance in this and other shows from 80's), and the voice of the Robert is still good even today (obviously not as much as when he was young, but still very good) but that day he had the flu, in addition to the cold and the pressure of singing in front of the whole world after years apart from the band
Kevin R Ahhh hell no! Zeppelin always did their own thing. They weren’t trying to be trendy.
I remember watching this as it happened in 1985, and being a HUGE fan and a guitar and especially a fan of Jimmy Page, I remember it today like it was a week ago! Sitting there thinking “They’re blowing it”! “Jimmy!! You did to much coke before the show”!! These guys are all amazing talents. They’re the kind of guys that don’t have to rehearse or practice at all. They just get together and do it. But Jimmy was so out of it he hardly knew where he was, and Robert was having voice problems, (but he nailed Stairway) Jone Paul Jones was on his game all night….
I’m sure Jimmy and Robert cringed for years anytime they saw this after it happened! Lol.
But yea, it really was a let down at the time….
Both Robt & Jimmy Blame the Drummers for this unstellar Zepp performance
I remember it just like you do, being so excited to see it, and the let down of them falling on their face.
Actually, Jimmy was hooked on morphine at the time; so maybe you're right. During those days people did coke to come back up.
Next Tuesday, Jan. 9th, will be his 80th birthday ! And through all the heartbreaks and malfeasance, he's still with us. Such an amazing talent! Last I heard, he was teaching young guitarists. I've read that he insists youngsters learn classical music, such as Chopin and Bach, first, before trying to rock.
Yes, so happy for each and every day that Jimmy Page is still with us.. it will a very sad day the World over and every day thereafter when he no longer with us

It's weird that two seventies bands, Queen and Led Zeppelin, both performed. One gave arguably the greatest performance of the twentieth century and the other took a combined total of 27KG cocaine before the gig.
Haydn Evans Not to defend LZ for this, but there is a difference. Queen were active in the early 80's and were touring The Works into '85. Led Zep hadn't played live for 5 years and had lost their original drummer. Doesn't excuse them for not rehearsing though (which Queen did)

Hey guys this is not only gonna be in front of a full stadium but it’s gonna broadcast live across the world, think we should practice? Nah let’s wing it.
It wasn't their best show. But they didn't have anything to prove. They already done did that in the 70's. Plus it's only partial Zeppelin, and Page was still strung out on heroine. Plant, probably a qualeude or 3. It probably sounded great to them. Haha!
@Noble Failureswhen did he say he was trying to replace John? He was just playing drums for the show.
@@Peachie4011 Yeah but it was a real bummer on the day because they had been one of the top live acts - they basically started arena rock - and everyone had been waiting all day, for something we thought would never happen, but then it turned out like this. Then for years we all remembered them for this horrible day, not for the giants they had been. That's why O2 was so important; they proved that they still had it, and now we all remember them as giants again. I'm kind of glad they never went on tour after that, because their reputation is secure now.
P.S. I think you'll find Plant was clean by the end of the 80's; which is why 'In Through The Out Door' is pretty much a Robert Plant and John Paul Jones album; because those two were clean, while Bonzo was a raging alcoholic and Jimmy Page was a heroin addict.
Maybe because I'm not really a Zep fan the performance didn't bother me, I like some good sloppy rock and roll, Zep was good here.

I don't get the negativity toward this performance. They sound the same here as they did for most of their shows in the mid to late 70s. Page playing whatever he wanted and Plant finding ways to avoid the high notes he put on their original recordings. They had some fun for 20 minutes and put on a good little show for the world.
Honestly, I agree with you. I am not a fan. Out of curiosity I came here, and I get a concert that is not perfect but I would say it's fair to say that it's okay. Mind you, I never liked Led Zeppelin. However, this music has a tune, has rythm, has lyrics, the crowd is happy, I can say that there were some esporadic issues with some notes, but I would not say it is terrible. I checked Amy Winehouse's last concert, and that was really sad. This is not sad. It's a rock band performing, with some errors, okay, granted. But it is not the worst thing ever. It is a decent performance. The crowd does attest to that.
@@luzsonriente Some reactions really have nothing to do with the music. Queen was good that day. But people's response to their performance is all about how Freddie Mercury worked with the crowd. Musically, Elton John was just as good as Queen that day but no one talks about his performance.
Bob Turnley: Great comment! Exactly!
In fact, I think if RP had just said something along the lines of, "No Rehearsal, No Frills, we're just here for the event and for all of you." All would have been understood, forgiven and, well, probably not forgotten, but you get the idea.

Queen were the best at live aid
This is the best comment section ever. Period.
Truuuuuue
Want a more epic one? Go see the cover of About a girl by Puddle of Mudd
You are not kidding. I've had tears streaming down my face from laughing so hard and just when I think they can't get any funnier, I scroll down a little more and laugh a little longer.
Laughing my tits off 😂
This was, without doubt, one of their performances.
Yes
It was a fantastic performance ... by JPJ.
worst performances. 🤦🏻♀️
Yes it was definitely a performance, a totally shite one...
The best show
I believe that somewhere in the world, there are people who feel the same emotions that I feel when I listen to masterpieces like this song.
It had definitely been a long time since they rock n rolled
One of the greatest live Led Zeppelin performances ever.....did not occur on that night.
I was there and it was still great
Very true
But thankfully it did in 07!
It was a shambles but sure it was great if you were there, I'm sure Phil Collins would of taken it well if someone fucked his songs up....not!
@@craggymozzer plants voice is gone and page was pissed out his brain, and its phil collins fault ??
I find it funny how Live aid gave birth to arguably one of the best live performances ever... And this.
Yeah, I'll go with Queen whenever I want to watch a Live Aid performance.
I remember that day in 1985 very well, it was the summer after my junior year of college and we didn't have a TV so I had to listen on my boombox but had to go outside to get reception. Back when I was in high school we had tickets to see them live but then John Bonham died. And now I was so excited to finally hear Led Zeppelin live!
It makes me sad to hear so many haters. Yes Plant was loosing his voice, probably because they hadn't performed in 5 years eh? It looked like there was all kinds of stage chaos when they opened the curtain, seemed like everything wasn't properly set up yet and since it was Phil Collins who introduced Plant, Page and JPJ I can't help but think he screwed up there. I think this led to further problems during the set, possibly including Page's pedals. As for Page, I think they were having problems with the sound...sometimes I could barely hear the guitar at all. But I actually think Page sounded pretty damn good, especially considering he plays stuff that nearly all other guitarists can only dream about.
But even before I heard them play, I knew Phil Collins was not the right drummer for this reunion just as a matter of style, they should have stuck with just Thompson who was clearly more familiar with the songs and played more within the style of Zeppelin. I love Phil Collins and Genesis, but seriously he was not prepared to play these songs...anyone doubting me just watch Exhibit A (7:45 - 8:15).
It's almost like he sabotaged them from the start
Anyone who says drugs aren't harmful should watch this performance.
“Does anyone remember laughter?”
Not after this dear god
I saw Zeppelin in 79 at Knebworth, it’s amazing how much Plant had changed in just 6 years.
Like Axl Rose from 1993 to 2001
Lol watching it after reading all the comments was the real climax of laughter, i dont feel so bad not being able to keep up with the studio recorded sound now that I've aged and my fingers have that stiffness I knew would find me.
I just saw an interview where Jimmy said “it was the drummers fault.Phil Collins didn’t know how to play Rock n’ Roll.” Yeah, the drummers and the kilo of blow you did in the helicopter on the way to the show!
This comment section is golden😂😂🖤
Right?? Laugh after laugh after laugh. People brought their A game to this comment segtion
Even Phil Collins said he shouldn't have joined them onstage, Tony Thompson was spot on.
Phil said he thought he knew the songs, he admitted that he was lost
How am I just seeing this now????? I looooove Led Zep and to have Phil on drums OMG John is my number one drummer and Phil is in my top 5
Me: _(listens to the live aid album on Spotify)_ * wonders why led Zeppelin's performance isn't included *
Also me: _(Watches this video)_ *understands...*
Understandable, have a nice day ✌️
They asked for it not to be included and made a donation instead.
@@redpine8665 no, they didn’t allow it to be included. Not quite the same
It’s comforting to know that Zep redeemed themselves for one last time in 2007 before closing the book
They also played once in 1998 and there were Page and Plant tours in the 90s
And 95
They played Atlantics 40th anniversary concert in 88
What happened in 2007?
@chwthomas09 that was even worse than this. Ever see Heartbreaker from the 88' show?
It was an amazing moment to have witnessed on TV or in person. I can only imagine the brokenness 💔 Jones, Page, and Plant experience playing without being The Quadruplet. Bonham was deeply missed. The world watch their smiles while crying. I cannot thank them enough for giving the world love and music once again. ❤
What a remarkable performance. Really brings a tear to the eye. "Good" isn't the word.
Two minutes in and Phil Collins was wishing Concorde had never been invented.
Imagine you were a huge Zeppelin fan and this is the show you went to and finally got to see them live
I think this performance proved bonzo was the heart and soul of this band, but toward his end, he had checked out too.
Then you say : "At last I can see!! I am not blind anymore!!"
@@jeffworob3453 more like the band fell apart after the death of Bonham. But remember that they only had 1 hour to practice for this performance.
Jimmy had only had one hour to practice for this show because for the prior month before, he was too busy inhaling blow up his nose. Again, total disrespect on his part toward his craft and the paying audience.
They were sloppy a lot in concert during the '70s, particularly during the latter half.
