Chevrolet Silverado Fuel pump problem; SOLVED

- Hello, I'm working on my 2004 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 with a 5.3L. Issue was it wasn't starting, it would crank and crank and that's it. I checked fuel pressure, and it didn't have any, so I changed the fuel pump. It still wasn't fixed, so I checked for power and ground. Had power but no ground. In this video I show where the ground for the fuel pump is so you can repair easily if you have the same problem.
If you want to check the electrical connections on this model, it has 4 wires on the plug. The 2 outside wires are for the fuel pump power and ground. The 2 inside wires are for your fuel level sending unit.
That’s why you always check the simplest things first.
Thanks for posting this, so others will know to check the ground first.
You’re right about that!
I did this, didn't expect another group by the drivers side front tires. The side steps pushed the bolts out for the 4 wheel drive and fuel pump
Fuel pumps now are 600 before cost here 😅
@@LETSGOBRANDON13 I was expecting the fuel pump ground to be under the bed close to the pump where it’s out of the way and close to the pump but noooo, they have to put it by the front wheel where sticks ,rocks and corrosion from salty roads can get to it 😏
@@LETSGOBRANDON13 wow! 😳
What an excellent video. I liked how you pointed out exactly where we looking under the vehicle. I've watched tons of videos where I had to figure it out myself, not always easy for a non-mechanic. Thanks!
Thank you!! Yeah, I'm just trying to spread the word and hopefully helping someone.
same issue on my 2004 gmc yukon..after I spliced and cleaned the metal to metal contact.. fuel pump works like new!!!I cannot thank you enough!! john- jds small engine
Your welcome my friend, I'm glad the video was helpful
Thanks! Great video. Don’t count it all as a loss, you won’t have to wonder about the pump for a long time now! Off to check my grounds now!
Thank you Morgan! And good luck! 😊
Thank you for the information!!! My truck didn’t wanna start, I thought the pump died, but after seeing your video, I touched around that area, didn’t find any broken wires, but after moving the wires around the truck started!!! So at least saved me a tow truck bill. Now during the day I gotta look in to what’s going on. Thanks again
You’re welcome, I’m glad that it helped you out a little bit, hopefully it’s a simple fix for you.
I was surprised the ground is so far forward. I have an '06 and it's ground is at the same spot as yours. My '94 has it's ground right on top of the frame rail on the left side , right there with the other hookups for the pump, so I never would have imagined the newer ones are gounded way up front! Good info, thanks for doing the video.
Hello Jeffro, I thought the very same thing never imagined it was way up there, I thought it would be where your 94 has it. And that’s where I started my search for it. Your welcome
This might just have saved me a coyple dollars, thank you for your video.

Thanks for sharing! Replaced my pump, worked for awhile, now just cranks but no start, no pressure.
Hi Andrew, if you want to check the plug at the fuel pump, the 2 outside terminals are for power to the pump. If you hook your meter into the outside terminals then turn the key on, you should get momentary Voltage for about 3 seconds. Should be battery voltage, if not then you either have a power or ground problem and will have to isolate to find out which one is the problem. The 2 inside wires at the plug are for the fuel level sending unit.
I replaced my pump and it'll start and run sometimes for a few minutes, stall, turn over and refuse to start etc. Sometimes won't even turn over. Going to check this because every time it stalls and refuses to start, it'll show an empty fuel gauge even though it's half full. When it does run, the gauge goes back to working. Gotta be something going on with the wiring I figure. Thanks for showing the location. Great video.
I’m glad the video was of some help. On my 2004 the wire location for the ground is only for the pump I believe. The sending unit has its own ground because when I checked it electrically I had a good ground for the gauge and it did work properly. Just for your information, on the plug that plugs into the pump, the 2 outside wires are the pump wires for power and ground. The 2 inside wires are for the gauge. Hope this helps
Thanks for creating this video. You saved me a ton of trouble and money.
Your welcome Dan, I’m glad it was helpful 👍🏻
You saved life I was bouta chnage out the new pump and do the process all over again
I’m glad the video was of some help, thank you!
I'm sorry, I meant to give you a compliment on your video. This is a great video by the way. Thank you very much.
Thank you, I appreciate that! But no need to apologize 👍🏻
Anything helps, thanks for sharing it with us

Oh man, that would of pissed me off. That's something you could of temporarily fixed and got the truck home. Glad you got it fixed.
Yeah, who knew, at least it’s fixed now and I shouldn’t have to replace the fuel pump for a while 😂
Thanks alot for you sharing this problem solving !
Your welcome, I just hope it will save someone some money and a lot of grief 😊 Thanks
WOW!I hope this is my problem. I searched pump replacement and did that and am about to go to a shop.
I hope it is that easy for you too, Good luck!!
@@herbiesgarage681 solved it thanks
Thank you for sharing... thats some very helpful info... thank you bub !!!

I had this exact issue! It would crank for 5 secs before it started and it ran great. Until I saw a ground wire sticking out, I tucked it onto the frame because it looked bad, little did I know. I fixed the issue by accident. So I then let the wire roam free again just to make sure, and yeah same issue. So I grounded it right and now my truck turns on within 1 second. But for me it was the wire from the rear.
I guess whoever worked on it before I got it, cut the wire it seems like.
@@ElGhostPresents I’m glad that you found it and got it fixed, wiring can be a pain in the butt
Man dude sorry bummer. But we all thank you for the video
Thank you, yeah it was a bummer for sure 😁

I had same issue but the skinny ground wire that was messed up was underneath the motor next to the rack and pinion it broke off like yours did and my truck would just crank over but never turned on till i figured it out andd the skinny wire was broken just like yours must be the bumps we hit on the road that cause it to flex up and down till it eventually breaks off this is for every one who owns chevy mine is an 06 chevy silverado crew cab
I know, it’s kind of crazy but if we all become more aware of the problem maybe it will help from being stranded somewhere.
thank you

Wish i watched this video first. Holy fk. Lost 4x4 too because of those grounds
I know what you mean, those grounds can really screw some stuff up.
@herbiesgarage681 best part was, all I was doing was changing all the u joints on everything. Backed up 1 ft and it died, tried everything, couldn't get the pump to kick back on.
Thanks You Sir!
Your welcome!
Sir... Thanks.... Im pissed after changing the pump.... And pumm.... It was that ground... Thanks
Oh dang! Another victim, sorry about that but at least we know now, and Thank You
I spent $230 for a pump. It ended up being the ground. 07 Chevy Silverado.
Oh crap, no way, that just makes you sick doesn't it? Well at least you don't have to worry about replacing the pump again for a long time!
Chevy and there ground issues flimsy wires they put on flex and end up breaking causing people to buy unnecessary parts check all grounds if you own a chevy these trucks have the same ground issues its the cheap harness they put on all the chevys
Brother I spent 47 bucks on a fuel pump 4 years ago and I'm just now having a problem with the gauge and I'm thinking it's the cluster. Where the hell did you pay 230?
@@RealDeal458in 2024 that’s where! Lmao
That's also your abs break ground so if it's coming on and off might want to check that ground as well.
03 silverado 4.8, trucks started shutting off avout 2 yrs ago but only when driving really slow like backing out of my driveway and sharp turning but was every now and then. For the last 6+ months, its been a lot more consistent and randomly, not just turning. Nlw at stops/ligts, droving slow, and has done it while driving a couple times now. Changed the fuel pump yesterday since a driend noticed i had no pressure but the when i go to turn it on, the prining noise on this new one sounds "choopy" and real short then indont hear the "whine" and with my old pump, the prime "whine"sound was really clear at all times. But i do have good pressure now so looks like ill have to look at some grounds now. I seem about splicing the new connector when replacing a new pump but I didnt do that since it was the same design/connector. With this new one, it turns off as soon as I put it in reverse. Can't let go of the gas pedal or else it'll shut off. I test drove it and went to step on it and shut off before I actually got to step on it.
Wiring problems can be one of the worst things to find sometimes
Try unplugging the MAF sensor and see how it acts
@michaelvonluehrte6448 I got to replacing the ground strap from the body to the block and seemed to have fixed my issue. Hasn't turned off since last Sunday. Still some rattling at times in the AC compressor but not like it was before. Using the AC doesn't "lose power" or "almost turn off" anymore. Getting to the bolt sucked! Mine faces the firewall and getting it back on was worse and had to "feel only." I had to put a board on top of the engine bay to lie on lol. I did check the MAF afterwards but seemed fine. Will definitely replace later though. Good looking out man, appreciate it.
I appreciate man one more question how do you manage to lift up the bed like that
@mikekings5265 you have to remove the bolts that hold the bed to the frame on the drivers side and loosen the ones on the passenger side. Then you can lift the bed by hand and shove a board under it to prop it up. A word of caution, if you lift too high the passenger rear fender will contact the bumper and damage your fender. Also, you have to remove the fuel filler neck and get it out of the way.
Okay I appreciate brother
@@mikekings5265 your welcome
Thanks
My truck would not start today. Or any noise from pump.
Going to check this tmrw or the following day.
Hopefully it’s an easy fix for you!
@@herbiesgarage681 i really hope so.
But I have to drive out of state soon and this worries me.
My fuel gauge stopped worked 2years ago
I figured it was the sensor on the pump then.
I replaced the pump it stayed up the same.
So this pump is only 2 years old. Not many miles.
@@nativepride101 sounds like it could be ground issue but the fuel sender for the gauge has a separate ground if I remember correctly
@@herbiesgarage681
I replaced the fuel pump harness.
I didn't the last time.
That was the issue.
Running now.
But I found missing header bolts no wonder it rattles
@@nativepride101 yeah I had to replace all of those too, the driver side by the firewall is a pain if it’s broken off. I had probably 6 broken off between the 2 sides
I had a bunch of wires that got torn apart on my front drive shaft. That ground wire you pointed out is supposed to go to the fuel pump as you mentioned. Would you happen to have a diagram of the wiring? I’m missing several wires and a diagram would help me some.
I’m sorry I don’t have a wiring diagram, I thought I had a repair manual but I guess I don’t lol
You mentioned the ground wire don't you like how Chevy put the wires in between the frame and the body
Hello Bobbie, makes you wonder sometimes especially on this ground for the fuel pump. Instead of attaching a ground close by the pump under the bed where it is kind of protected it travels all the way down the side of the body and attaches by the front wheel area where a lot of possibilities of damage can occur. Oh well, I guess I can’t complain too much it’s been a pretty good ole truck for me 😊
Same with an 07 tahoe.
That’s good to know, thank you
Bought new fuel pump didn’t check wire maybe tomorrow
@@bertramlee1887 It’s definitely a good idea to check that ground wire, it’s in a bad location really. Good luck
So my truck starts then it stalls out idk if it’s fuel pump or a bad ground cause I can still here the pump
I have Silverado 1500hd 2003
It could be low fuel pressure or several other things too. You could check the ground but I suspect that’s not it, sorry
That's why you never throw parts at it always test before buying parts always test.
You are absolutely correct! I usually do test before I replace and this bit me in the butt, hopefully someone can learn from my mistake. Really the whole purpose of this video was to help others
i have spent hundreds of hours thousands of dollars on parts and all i needed was a fuse. so i feel you@@herbiesgarage681
Where does the other end terminate? I can't see it.
@@vectorcontrol4979 I believe it goes all the way to the plug for the fuel pump connector
@@herbiesgarage681 Oh, Ok I got it. Thanks. Long run for a ground. Jeez...
@@vectorcontrol4979 That’s what I thought too, especially since a perfectly good frame ground is right next to the fuel pump 😏
In order to get the bed in that position did you loosen all the bolts on the bed or just on the one side
The bolts have to be loosened on the one side and taken out on the fuel pump side of course. Be careful of your bed on the loosened bolt side. When you lift the bed it might contact the bumper and scratch your paint. Just don’t go up too high and you’ll be fine.
Does it still crank if it has this issue?
Yes, it will crank as normal but no fuel pressure
By any chance do you know what the other wire next to the fuel pump ground wire is for?
I’m sorry but I don’t
It's for the brakes
I'm on my second Silverado. I had a 2004 with 5.3, and now have a 2005. The 2004 had 136,000 on it when I sold it. And the 2005 has 140,000 right now. They're both money pits. I will never ever own another Shiterado.
Really, mine has been a really good truck, although I did have to put about $1000 into the engine. I had an F150 once that was a money pit and was glad to get rid of it. I guess there is good and bad in all brands. Thanks for the comment
The engines have both been fine. The best part about these trucks in my opinion. Trans was rebuilt on one and trans lines replaced. Fuel pump on both. Air conditioner compress on both.@@herbiesgarage681
I have an 05 with 180k, got it with 115k . New rear diff at 169k and new transmission at 171k. Never upkept those 2 things and it cost me. Luckily I got the truck for 1,500$ from a family member. Honestly this is a solid truck now . Motor runs good but probably because I did really good maintaining the motor. Now it's pretty freaking quick
What makes you call it a money pit? Just curious and maybe I can watch for it on my truck
I had an 04 and the electrical problems were absolutely terrible never fully figured them all out thing was junk iv had some older ones 96-98 those were great trucks reliable
Simple. Just drive something else..or go back pre-96.
@@MelissaLindell-d6b Actually, this has been a very good and reliable truck once I got the bugs worked out of it. But I understand what you are saying
@@herbiesgarage681 those years really had more issues with the FPR than the pump but wiring...none of them are wired very good. I usually add grounds to trucks especially. Wiring plugs and harnesses are the majority of the problems with the modern GM trucks. The last GM fwd car I had had wiring gremlins even the dealers couldn't figure out. I had one Buick really low miles and it would start and run ok and about 7 or so miles from the house it would quit. Happened 3 times in a row at various miles from home. I swear I prayed all the way to Colorado Springs and all the way back (Springfield MO area). Finally they found a bad ground wire for the distributor electronics. You're right, those were pretty good trucks. Napa's Echlin line is made by Standard. A lot of parts anymore are reboxed. I'm pretty well sold on AC Delco pumps and used to be Delphi but Delphi was bought by Federal Mogul and they don't have the same stellar reputation anymore. Probably still better than some.
@@MelissaLindell-d6b Electrical gremlins can be the worst. I had a little Ford Ranger with the 2.3liter stick shift several years ago. Loved the truck but it would suddenly die for no reason, I kept tracing the problem back to the fuel pump relay. I never found the problem, what I did was to remove the relay and put a jumper wire in place of the relay and taped everything up. Drive probably 40,000 trouble free miles after that then sold it that way. Some things are just strange
I would be pissed off ..
I was, mostly at myself for not checking it before buying a new pump. Also for GM for putting the ground connection there and me having to deal with a dead truck and getting home. 😏
What the hell is GM's issue with wires just breaking hey I have bought several yukons and suburbans dirt cheap that didn't run and they all had multiple broken wires, In area's that nothing caught them or tore them They just broke ???
I don’t think it’s exclusive to GM but I understand your frustration for sure
