I have a tip. On Chevy Silverados after you have been driving on snow covered roads on your way to work during the winter. After you get off work the starter won't crank. What happens is the drain hole in the starter housing gets snow and water packed up there into the starter gears. It then freezes and won't let the starter turn over. You need to go under the pickup with a little benzomatic propane torch and warm up the starter to melt the ice. After that I put a dab of door and window caulking over that hole and have had no issues with my pickup starting for the last 4 years now.

I found the 5.3 harness has 4 ground wires on it. Will any one of those prevent the truck from starting or just the big flat wire ground on the back of the block?
Without any or all of those grounds, random things will not work. Could be a no start, could be poor performance. The big ground strap you're referring to is part of the grounding system (which ties the engine block to the frame to complete the grounding process) but the others will hinder the flow of electricity so as not to let things work (I.e. starter or PCM). My bad ground was on passenger side back corner of engine, coming from main harness to the intake manifold. Confirmed on 2003 6.0 liter. I believe slot where my starter relay goes is all messed up. New fuse box on the way. Thank you for the video. Subscribed!
I wanted to give my positive feedback. I have a truck with 225,000 miles, never had any issue a day and it’s life. It left me stranded in one night at midnight, and it would only click. I put a brand new battery in it that month and I knew that it wasn’t the battery. I knew it wasn’t the connections. After messing with the truck a while I eventually got it started and got it home. But then same thing just click click. After watching your video and switching around the relays a number of times, I decided to cross the relay and send 12 V power direct to the starter. It worked, I didn’t let the engine actually fire and start. I put the relay back in and use the key to start the truck. Oddly, the truck seems better than it did before I had the issue. My issue was an only just the click click, when I would turn the key on accessory the power started flickering on and off like the battery was being disconnected and reconnected really fast, but I knew there wasn’t a loose connection. Somehow crossing the relay in this fashion fixed something. And it fixed something else inside the truck. Even the doorbell dinger noise seems a little more loud and clear. It’s all very weird, and I wish I knew what the actual problem was, but I’m glad a little piece of wire can fix the issue enough to get it home.
@@terrywilburn3579 I never did figure out anything. It happened again about two months later, I got it, started. It took it straight to the dealership and traded it in.
WORKED!!! Thank you so much for this tip! 2015 Silverado was clicking but no crank. Checked fuses and grounds, no luck. Used a speaker wire (probably 18 AWG) and hooked it up to the relay terminal "86". I tuned key to "ON" position and tapped to the POSITIVE terminal as in the video. At first, I could hear the solenoid clink, but no crank. It did this on the first 3 taps, then on the 4th started cranking! I pulled the jumper and put the relay back in and cranked it and started right up! I have since turned it off and started it 3 times, NO issues! I think what happened was...I went down a HORRIBLE pot-holed road like miles long. When I turned it off after that, It would not crank. I think all of the jostling and way it acted when jumping, then worked, it dis-aligned the starter to engine, so was locked up and system detected key in run position, but no crank and pulling current, so would not allow it to start. Once the dis-alignment of gears and lock up was cleared, no issues!! I can't thank you so much. It took 60 second and 5' of speaker cable for $1 to get it working again after being down a week or two!!
@@getminesallday24 yes, Starter relay! This resolved the issue for the moment, but some times I turn the key and starts and some times, nothing, nothing, nothing, then starts....or nothing, nothing, nothing, so I try the Auto Start and starts!! I need to find out the Root-Cause of the issue and as still having issues and need it reliable. Is this "jumping" bypassing the relay and issue us actually the relay? or is there something wrong and starter and solinoid need repacement?? Can someone clarify this??
@@getminesallday24 I resolved the issue 100%. This fixes what the Root-Cause was, which was just a weak Relay!! Great video!! Unfortunately didn’t work on 2001 Chevy 2500HD. But, gave me hope to keep looking for a fix, which we found by what seemed like just pulling the crank fuse out and putting it back in.
I've had this problem and used the 87 to 30 jumper for the longest time and then i found if i put my truck in the on position and wait for the security light on the dash to off and as soon as that happens i turn the key back to off for at least a second then it will turn over on the next turn. So on wait for the light to go off, turn the key back for a second and then turn the truck over. It's work everytime so far. The only time it doesn't work is when i try to turn over too fast without waiting at least a second or bit.
Just did this....Saved my ass. Conveniently I was stuck at Menards. Scored a replacement cord for a power tool for four bucks and got it running. Thanks for the video man!!!

to be clear: turn the relay upside down so the pins are facing up. take a small flat head and pop off that cover (it's not sealed). Put the relay back in. You'll see a tab style contact. Just push it in so it makes contact. I just got jumped that way but there was a guy under the truck also giving the starter a tap. Not sure if that was necessary but it got my no-crank-no-start going. Guy helping (was a mechanic) said i needed a new starter.

Laura, for some reason the emergency brake electronic system has a gauge now I didn’t have much power in my engine, it never gave me a lot of horsepower is what I meant. Noticeably different, any thoughts?
Cool hack. I think you can just swap the relay to the left to test if it is the relay as well. This though will bypass any other safety switches as it goes directly to the solenoid of the starter i presume.
People should know that there is risk to this kind of repair. If you make a mistake and tap an un-fused 12V jumper wire to the wrong terminal or wrong relay, you could send a huge current surge back into one of the sensitive computer modules. Worst case scenario, that turns a simple repair into a confusing estimate that may be more than the truck is worth. Without a wiring diagram and enough knowledge to respect what you don't know, it would be wise to leave it to a pro. With a few simple tests, a pro makes a clear diagnosis, first. Then if he does decide to jump power to a low current relay, he might use a test light or fused jumper that caps maximum current. That way, if he does make a mistake, it is less likely to cost him his job.
@@mikelboyd711 I used to think that people brave enough to start randomly cutting wires or jumping wires would be embarrassed to later take the vehicle to a pro without telling him exactly what they did. Surprisingly often the pro needs to spend an extra hour fixing all the damage caused by the backyard mechanic, so that he can get a clean data set from the car with actual clues without all the background noise of artefact caused by DIY attempts to fix it. When you jump wires, the computer will notice those attempts and flag a trouble code that may be completely misleading. Trust me, you're better off spending money on a tow and avoiding the catastrophic event of serious computer or module damage from jumping the wrong wires.
Just tried it. It worked. Not sure what is bypassed with that process. It was hooked up to the starter terminal on the fuse. I turned it off and restarted it without an issue. Wonder whether something got wet. Thank you for the info.

I ran a wire from the relay to the number 10 fuse and it starts up every time when turn the key on in the switch
Reginald Jackson what fuse is that? Ignition?
@@reginaldjackson1001what the number 10 fuse please.? I'm broke and it ain't no joke.
There not perfect but i have had my 2002 chevy silverado 1500 for half of its nearly 20 year life AND I LOVE IT NEVER LEFT ME ANY WHERE EVEN WHEN IT BREAKS LOL great trucks
Man you literally just got me off the side of the road. I stopped to help someone out. Got them back on the road. Shook hands and they drove off into the sunset. I hopped back in my Yukon and it wouldn’t start. Thank God for UA-cam University.
I'm having the same issue with my 2008 gmc sierra, I've trouble shot it down to a bad (bcm) body control module. Every one I've talked to tried telling me it's a bad starter, but If I unhook my battery and wait an hour or so, then hook it back up it fires right up, I also lost the volume on my radio which is another sign of a bad bcm, this trick helped me get home so thank you for this
Thank you so much. I tried this on my 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, worked like a charm.
What if it doesn't work I have same truck as yours????
You just saved my 400 000 mile van thanks
Worked great on my 03 Silverado 1500HD 6.0 you the bomb. Thanks brother keep up the videos
Awesome glad it helped & thx for the feedback!!!
Was the security light stuck on? As in won't turn off even after disconnecting the battery

Thank you for sharing this video very valuable information I had just went grocery shopping and my truck wouldn't start this video save me $290 thank you again
What if it just sparks and doesn't crank
Confirmed on 2003 6.0 liter. I believe slot where my starter relay goes is all messed up. New fuse box on the way. Thank you for the video. Subscribed!
did the fuse box fix your problem
@@beepbeepbella8139 - Yes it did.
Thanks so much for the vid! It worked for me. Although it's just a temporary fix. But it'll buy me some time until I find the real problem. 👍
I'm having the same problem did you ever figure out what the issue was thank you
@@terrywilburn3579 I never did figure out anything. It happened again about two months later, I got it, started. It took it straight to the dealership and traded it in.
Great video. Our problem turned out to be a bad ground.
Where at
Yeah where at??
What relay the starter relay?
@@getminesallday24 yes, Starter relay!
This resolved the issue for the moment, but some times I turn the key and starts and some times, nothing, nothing, nothing, then starts....or nothing, nothing, nothing, so I try the Auto Start and starts!! Not sureof 2 things...
1. What this jumping the "87" of the started relay actually does?? Is it bypassing the relay and applying voltage directly to the starter, or??
2. I need to find out the Root-Cause of the issue and as still having issues and need it reliable. Is this "jumping" bypassing the relay and issue us actually the relay? or is there something wrong and starter and solinoid need repacement??
Can someone clarify this??
@@RozsaAmplificationLLC I'm having the same issue goes months with no hesitation to start then out of nowhere I get stranded
@@getminesallday24 I resolved the issue 100%.
This fixes what the Root-Cause was, which was just a weak Relay!! I replaced the relay with a new one and works 100% and cranks and starts every single time!!....just wish they explained it as such, but thanks for the quick way to jump the relay should it be weak or completely broke!
@@RozsaAmplificationLLC thanks i did the same no more issues as well
Great video!! Unfortunately didn’t work on 2001 Chevy 2500HD. But, gave me hope to keep looking for a fix, which we found by what seemed like just pulling the crank fuse out and putting it back in.
Crank fuse location?
It worked for me on my 2001 Yukon and then turned off engine and was able to start with key only😅 thanks man
Thanks so much
I forgot about this hack my old mechanic know all these bypass hacks but unfortunately he passed away
That's unfortunate
Thanks! It worked for me as well. I was stuck at the store.
i’m 19 and had NO CLUE how i was gonna get my dads truck to start , came across your video & MAAAANNN YOURE GREAT! shoutout to you man! keep it up ❤️
I needed this video and a wire a year ago
Did you fix it? If so, what was the issue?
I've had this problem and used the 87 to 30 jumper for the longest time and then i found if i put my truck in the on position and wait for the security light on the dash to off and as soon as that happens i turn the key back to off for at least a second then it will turn over on the next turn. So on wait for the light to go off, turn the key back for a second and then turn the truck over. It's work everytime so far. The only time it doesn't work is when i try to turn over too fast without waiting at least a second or bit.
Hmmm that's odd issue but good to know thanks for sharing!!!!
Just did this....Saved my ass. Conveniently I was stuck at Menards. Scored a replacement cord for a power tool for four bucks and got it running. Thanks for the video man!!!

@@stickhand77 did you figure out which part causes this?
What was the faulty part?
Her husband came home and I almost didnt make it out of the driveway thank you so much
You can also just pop the relay cover off and squeeze the contactor together and it will start no need for the wire
squeeze which contactors?
Can you elaborate on this?
How
explain?
to be clear: turn the relay upside down so the pins are facing up. take a small flat head and pop off that cover (it's not sealed).
Thanks man!! This worked first try. I'm not a mechanic by any means but know enough to be dangerous. Still trying to figure out why my truck won't start when Temps are below freezing here in virginia (good alternator and battery).
My baby just went down like an hour ago across town I am on my way back to try this right now just to get her home.
Good luck hope it works for u!!!

Thanks it works on my 2003 1500 gmc XL Denali
Hell ya glad it worked & helped!!!
Thank you brother it got me home.God bless you
Instead of putting relay back in just jump 87&30 in fuse box look at your relay it will show you which holes the numbers are
Tried this and blew my 40 amp ign fuse
That's why you have relays the relays handles the voltage the fuse just causes the relay to close the circuit
It worked on my truck thank you so much now I wish I know what the problem is so I can fix it
Don't wrap the wire. just hold it on the positive post and poke it down the hole that pin 87 of the relay goes in.
This i hope helps my Silverado come back to life. Salute
I appreciate the hack even though the video was crazy
lol thx glad it helped

Don’t be like me and try to fix $hit yourselves. I put in a new starter and battery. Nothing. Checked the fuses under the hood and there she was. Busted 40A ING fuse. $5 at AutoZone vs $75 for a starter and $160 for a battery. Oh well. At least I learned how to replace my starter. She’s 20yrs old (1999 step side z71). She was due for some pampering.

Crazy hack, I’m about to go to my truck and give it a try. With a lead wire though, could not find a copper wire. Good stuff though.

No don't do it
@@jacksonpierre3535why?
@@wildestcowboy2668 it could blow that relay and then you'll have to replace a second relay
@@jacksonpierre3535 on my starter I'm getting power to the big bolt but not the small one even with key turned to crank. Could it be a ground issue
Thank you for helping us. I'm too dumb to buy a newer vehicle like the normals.
It's great that you informed people. But sometimes being stuck on the side of the road with no PEOPLE let alone a PRO in sight...
