How to Cope With a Female Bully Boss
Sometimes 'mean girls' who cruelly judge and ridicule their peers grow up to be bosses who bully. What's a woman to do when her boss is making her life miserable? Rachel Simmons, author of Odd Girl Out has good advice for anyone coping with a female boss who is a bully.

Females bosses are the worst; take my word for it; then again there are some men bosses who are like women. This advice is useless if she has it out for you as a boss/supervisor. Two roads to go down, a) you fight fire with fire in a conservative way within the workplace b) you quit. If you choose route (a) be prepared, have facts, explain situations and there may be "down days" but always have your guard ready, which can be exhausting so get plenty of rest.

The only toxic male boss I ever had was the kind of guy who would yell at someone and would continue the bully behavior until the employee pushed back. If you stood your ground, and basically said "I know what I'm doing. I know how to do my job" he would actually back off. You could earn his respect that way, and the bully behaviors would stop. But... with female bosses I've had the behavior is very subtle and toxic and schoolyard-playground-quality "mean girls" - and it doesn't stop when you confront them. They just adopt some other tactic that might not be as obvious. Building a workplace clique and then excluding you from it is an obvious clue.

I had a female supervisor and she was very very NASTY and I believe that she was possessed by demons. She was very jealous, verbally abusive and she made me feel very isolated. I ended up leaving that job and from what I understand, she hasn't changed at and she has been in trouble a lot and she has a bad reputation. When I left that job, not only did I get a better position and more pay but I actually have a boss that is PROFESSIONAL. I said all that to say that if you have an office bully, just find yourself another job and then quit the one you have now. People will eventually realize that their behavior will cause people to leave them alone and/or not want to be bothered. I know one thing, that female has very low self esteem and the way she treated me was out of jealousy because she was intimidated by me. When you have a supervisor or a boss like that, usually they are trying to over compensate for what they lack. And when they see a person who naturally has what they don't have or what they want, they attack. I mean, think about it; the reason why people attack you is because they really are scared and intimidated by not only what you can do but by what you can become. If your in that situation, just know that you're not alone and God is on your side.

I'm a woman- i also much prefer a male boss. This is why-
If a guy is a boss and he's a complete ass, he tends to behave that way towards everyone, and even though some people might get it worse, the frustration will still be experienced by pretty much everyone in the office at some point.
However, if you have a woman as a boss and she's a complete bitch, she tends to target very specific people and be very two faced- which causes the victims to feel isolated and seems to be far more hurtful.

It seems they are petty and calculating and try to find ways make your miserable out of sheer vindictiveness. I've heard many female friends say that they would MUCH rather work for a man, simply for these very reasons. As for going to HR, if you're in a hostile work environment, I'm highly skeptical that they do anything except circle the wagons and find a way to cover their own ass before trying to screw you over.

I don't want you to feel that all women are like this. It's really sad that in a system where you take care of people, your coworkers treat you horribly. I'm a woman and I don't go talking about people behind their back, or do anything to jeopardize their job. I'm not like that; I have a life, and I care about people. I have humility. If people keep treating you like this to the point where you can't treat your patients 100% for fear of your job, then maybe you should get out.

I have just changed yet again at it is very present at the new place. This time I have decided to ride it out as it doesn’t help to leave anymore - THEY ( The narcissist manager) are everywhere now. All I can do to keep sane is write everything down. Also I have talked with the other manager so he knows that I am not the “crazy” one. He sees I am a sane and sound person. He even agreed she is “off”. So it’s helpful to explain to other manager. Maybe not always though. This problem is going to get worse. Only thing you can do with a horrible boss, is monitor the situation and hope it improves. If not, then it’s time to call for a meeting with her/him and tell them how you feel, it might not go well. In my case it didn’t, and she became very defensive. Sometimes it’s better to find another job

@pitbullexpress, absolutely. I suffered for a long time and in the end, this bully got me fired! Statis show majority of targets will leave or be fired. I was a fantastic employee & she hated me for it. Bullies will do everything to get rid of you so why wait! Get out before you're pushed out, a determined bully will ruin your emotional health and your career, that's the whole idea, that's what they want so it's no good asking them, bullies don't live by the same ethics as normal people do.

Woman-on-woman bullying, as women have officially become 50% of the workforce for the first time. In a Workplace Bullying Institute survey, female bullies target other women 71% of the time. Additionally, female bullies more frequently engaged in under-the-radar behaviors such as sabotage (53.7% of female vs. 39.9% of male bullies) and abuse of authority (50.2% vs. 44.7%), as compared to the more observable form of verbal abuse engaged in by more male (57.5%) than female bullies (47.1%).

I have experienced this as an intern. I don't think I learned even one thing from the six-month internship, except what I don't want to be. She would keep critical info from me, constantly comment on what I was eating (even told me I need to eat more and took pics of me eating), and brought me into her office to ask me if I was abused as a child. Still to this day, if I run into her, she looks me up and down and talks down to me as if I am still her intern.

To get rid of one manager they made another woman my boss--a woman that, over the last 20 years, seven or eight people who worked under her or had a run in with her would tell me (unsolicited) to watch out for her and not trust her. For some reason she believes because she's now MY boss she has the right to be nasty and bullying. She's also very stupid and had a most spectacular meltdown on Tuesday, bullying me, yelling at me and generally showing how stupid she is all in front of her own boss.

I just wish if u would make a whole series about this topic. I was harassed like hell in two jobs. Especially after I got pregnant. The HR would seldom take the side of an employee in relation to a boss! I know it would be easier to leave the job, but I hate to feel weak &incapable of facing troubles. On top from what I experienced;as soon as the boss turns her back to an employee, the rest of the coworkers would find it easier to also turn their back to the same employee trying to avoid troubles

Are companies with distributed workforces (employees work from home or in coworking spaces around the country or the globe) less likely to experience this? I had one that, like the video mentioned, she would give me wrong directions and then deny it. I came back with 'oh, I misunderstood, I will start taking notes from now on'. Which was my way of saying - OK, I am going to start recording your crap! From then on, I would repeat her directives back to her. I found my own passive-aggressive way to combat her passive-aggressive ways. Of course, she had other tactics, I would just wait for the opportune moment to passive-aggressively call her out.
