What I’ve always done when using a transit level to mark reference points is hang the tape measure from the top of the post. I hang the tape measure to where it’s facing the level and bring it down far enough to get a measurement. If it’s a little windy you may want to wrap a cable tie or masking tape around the post and tape measure to keep it from swinging. You can set a tape measure on a few posts at once, to avoid walking back to the transit for every post. Just write down which measurement goes with which post. Keep up the good work Austin!

Laser levels work great! I use mine to level, square, plumb, and to set a straight fence line. The only thing to keep in mind is whenever it’s windy there’s a slight deflection on the laser beam over long distances. So just be aware in which direction the wind is traveling. The best level in my opinion is the “ good ol fashioned ” water level. There’s no mechanical or electrical components to fail.

Austin, we use those pre-made beams like what you used on that carport as well. They work great. One suggestion that we've found to work well is to notch the inside of the square tubing post to allow the 2" square tubing of the beam to set down lower in the post. Just notch it deep enough so that the top of the beam comes out slightly above your post and you won't have the gap between the roof and top of the posts. Awesome content, keep up the great work!

Nice work. However like everyone else have suggestions for next time. Confused why not cut off the post and rest beams on top. A "Z " purlin on the outside with the top sticking out would give support for the roofing for overhang. That creates a hazard for anyone working on the roof. Someone could step too close to edge and it fold under foot dumping them to the ground, at both locations you show here. Would hate for any liability to get you.

Question. In 5-10 years, what prevents those posts from just rusting clean off at the water line where the concrete absorbs the water? At least in my area (bottom of the salt belt), metal tends to get rusted clean off at the mating surface to the concrete within 3-7 years.
