      I too disabled Google Services Framework, Play Store, Google Play Services on my Sister's Samsung Phone 🙃. Every App works fine even the Payments App, I think the Warning Notification is to deceive users to turn on the Services so they can Track you. Aurora Store and APK Mirror does the job 😤.

    Magic Earth has turn-by-turn voice navigation built in.
    GrapheneOS is the best thing ever! Right now, in attempting to set up a FOSS 'Tasker' alternative called 'Easer' to automate unblocking the microphone when a phone call is in progress, then blocking it again when the call ends.
    Same with the camera. Only unblocked when the camera app is in use. I don't want to have to remember to unblock and block those things constantly. We'll see how it goes.

      @@ThePrivacyWayfinder I've had every Google service possible, either disabled or paused for years. My wife has gmaps , which we have used from time to time. I don't think there is any alterative out there that beats it.
      Never owned an Apple product, except an iPod nano my mom gave me 15 years ago, so I can't speak on Apple maps. I've never used Waze.
      I used OSMand maps when I first got Graphene, but it was a nightmare to use and I hated it. Magic Earth is very user friendly by comparison. Maps are downloadable by state. I haven't used it a great deal, but I like it.

    How to change the ringtone on user profiles because the system just does not want to change it even to the ones that come with it. On the owner profile is possible but any other user has the ringtone changed to the "Castor" notification sound and it is very, very annoying! I wouldn't mind it but it is too quiet single note sound and I can barely hear it if I'm outside with max volume on the ringtone. Is there any possible way to change it because it really bugs me. I have to stay on the owner profile in order to hear if anyone is calling me. The strange thing is the notification sounds are NOT affected, only the ringtone. It might be a bug but seriously it is very annoying.

    @jamboz Рік тому +6

    Fantastic video -- i have a question or two for clarification. I can see you have the "Facebook family" of apps in one of the profiles. How do you go about installing those, and are notifications from those apps available to you regardless of what profile you're in? So for e.g., if you're in your main privacy focused profile, do you still get push notifications for, say, FB Messenger messages when it's installed in the "social" profile you set up?
    And I guess I would ask that same question of WhatsApp too (though I don't think you have that installed). If I want to ensure I get WhatsApp push notifications at all times, regardless of what profile I'm in, is it possible to do this? Or do I have to switch to the profile that the app is installed in?

    • @ThePrivacyWayfinder
      @ThePrivacyWayfinder  Рік тому +3

      Thanks!! There is a setting where you can get notifications from different profiles sent to the profile you are working in. However, I haven't tried it as I like to not have notifications personally. Rather than notifications getting pushed to me, I go in and check everything manually. Keeps me from getting distracted, but I know that might not work for everyone. Sorry I couldnt answer this one but hopefully someone else can chime in!

    Do Signal push notifications work with GrapheneOS? Don't you need Google framework/play services or MicroG for live push notifications?

    • @SamAtAstrocraft
      @SamAtAstrocraft Рік тому +4

      They do. When you first launch the app it will detect that Play Services aren't available and prompt you to allow unrestricted battery access. I believe it uses websockets instead of Play Services. However from my experience on a Pixel 4a this absolutely nukes battery life. I'm talking ~30% battery usage just from Signal idling overnight. I love everything else about Graphene but this one issue forced me to switch to Calyx + microG, it was a genuine deal breaker.
      Oddly enough I only seem to be able to find scattershot evidence of others having the same problem. Not sure if it had to do with my model, if people are just fibbing, or what. I tried reinstalling the app from different sources and even completely reinstalling Graphene but the issue persisted. Meanwhile on Calyx + microG the drain is negligible.

    • @acehoodman
      @acehoodman Рік тому +4

      @@SamAtAstrocraft Thanks for your answer. I think for most people "Sanboxed Google play services" is the way to go. With my Pixel 5 I'm getting over 8 hours display time where I watch ~6,5 hours youtube videos/shorts. I haven't tried CalyX with MicroG yet as I'm quite happy with GrapheneOS so far!

    • @ThePrivacyWayfinder
      @ThePrivacyWayfinder  Рік тому +3

      Push notifications does not work for me. You have to use the “pull” method where you open the app whenever you want to fetch new mail. I have learned to live with this and actually prefer it now since I’m not bombarded and distracted by each notification. However, this might be a deal breaker for some. Even with GSF, notifications does not work for me.

    Hello :) Can you tell me when Graphene OS support ends for Pixel 5? With a view to buying, does it make sense in your opinion to buy it, or is a device like pixel 6a better? Thanks

    • @ThePrivacyWayfinder
      @ThePrivacyWayfinder  Рік тому

      I think going with a Pixel 6 right now is the best bang for your buck. I saw on Amazon last week they had a refurbished one in excellent condition for around $220. Plus starting at Pixel 6 there are doing 5 year support from the date of release, that's great! I personally don't mind refurbs as the flashing process completely reinstalls the OS anyways, and I've always had good experience :)

    • @ThePrivacyWayfinder
      @ThePrivacyWayfinder  Рік тому

      The Pixel 5 will lose support in October 2023 this year I believe. So I’m comfortable using it until then. Once it loses security updates, I’m changing to a Pixel 6.

  • @bocamax

    Why do you use password managers. They are an obvious & easy line of attack. Why not just use something like supergenpass that requires zero apps, zero backups, zero effort? One of the biggest improvements you can make to your security situation is to migrate to supergenpass and avoid password managers all together. Nothing to save, nothing to backup, nothing that can get compromised.

      It is a fork of the Andoid OS.
      Android is an open source project that is not run by Google.
      Google installs their particular version of Android which requires their google services background app to run many of their apps, but the phone hardware itself interfaces with the open source Android platform.

      Here’s a good interview for why GrapheneOS chooses Google Pixel devices. ua-cam.com/video/WkQ_OCzuLNg/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
      I trust GrapheneOS and if they chose pixel devices, then I’m okay with their judgement. As an average user, it’s way above my understanding and I have to trust these projects. It’s way better than using iPhone or Stock Android imo 😀

    I JUST LOST A YEAR OF IMPORTANT PHOTOS!!! BACKUP FIRST!!!
    I guess I only have myself to blame really; but I watched 5+ long videos about GrapheneOS and installation walkthroughs, and I guess I still somehow just missed the memo to make sure your phone is COMPLETELY BACKED UP (PHOTOS, files, anything that you would lose if you could push one “wipe phone” button on your phone).
    Do not do a single step of installing GrapheneOS, before making sure you haven’t forgotten to backup EVERYTHING.
    RIP Dad, RIP Lily, RIP Patches; a year of saving things through pictures and screenshots gone, a year of a lot of photos of myself that now, I just won’t have a year of my life to be able to reference or look back at; just a year that I’ll pretend I was blackout drunk literally every day, because I literally have no other way of verifying that that year even happened tbh. Poof.
    RIP me

      Sorry to hear that.
      Unlocking the bootloader erases user data on the device. Something that the GrapheneOS documentation is thorough about, and any respectable 3rd party installation walkthrough.
