Thank you to Christi and Patrick for giving roughly $2M to this channel
the perfectly timed "yaaaaaay!" LOL!
Oh yes! A low budget gem that punches way above its weight.
Rocky?
The ending with the pyramid is quite interesting. Nyarlathotep, one of Lovecraft's Outer Gods, was known as The Black Pharaoh as well as Nephren-Ka. "It is said that the Black Pharaoh was buried in the Bent Pyramid of Dhasur".
Alternate take: Powell learned necromancy from Nagash.
The Thing meets hellraiser, loved the old style practical effects and the sci fi weirdness, shame there was no sequel.
Apperantly this movie was funded because of indigogo and used around 80k. It is absolutely wild that this was made with only 80k.
One of the best cosmic horror movies to date. Wish it became a netflix series, well before netflix went the whole modernization rout.
I just checked and it was 82k to be exact but wow that is shocking. I didn’t even know the budget was that low and those practical effects looked great.
@@Ghostface1998 Peter Jacksons first movie Bad Taste had a budget of $25 000, it also has great practical effects.
It's not really that surprising, because it's not full of A-listers, which is where the money really bleeds out. Godzilla Minus 1 cost only $15,000,000, for example, because the actors weren't egregiously overpaid like in Hollywood, where you couldn't even get a star for fifteen million. I made an indie film for just about two thousand dollars. Most big studio films are really inefficient with budgets.
Modernization? You mean working for shareholders at the expense of everything else including art and community?
@@brynjulfharfager6671Bad Taste and Brain Dead are still his best work.
Wasn't expecting to see the void as a reaction 😂 saw it at a film festival when it came out instantly became one of my fav horror movies, indeed the practical effects in this are insanely good 😆😆
Kenneth Welsh, who plays the villain in this film, also played rogue ex-FBI agent Windom Earle in Twin Peaks, where he was trying to open a portal to an evil dimension...talk about weirdly specific typecasting.
There are some digital effects in this film, though not where you'd expect. There weren't nearly as many guys in robes as there appeared to be in the film; they duplicated the same guys and moved them around to make the cult look bigger.
It is impressive how much they were able to do on such a small budget
Quite true.
I just noticed how much the poster feelslike a 1980's horror poster, first thing that comes to mind is the fly.
first of all, you again make me appreciate a movie more than before. i really enjoyed this movie, but i want moooore. i want to know more, see more of those creatures and effects... it just left me longing.
second, i must say this special request was brillantly timed by patrick. the direct comparison to "the thing" (2011) is so good! and ++spoilers++ the genuine reaction of mrs. movies "why use CGI, when practial effects are so fucking terrifying?" is just such a great way to put it. i appreciate your genuine reactions to stuff a lot, but this is my favourite quote ever.
third, i forgot.
you could make a short of that quote (with the increasingly tense facial expression before maybe) and share it everywhere! this really is such a good summary of my sentiments. i don't mind CGI, but these effects are intense.
I remember when this had it's kickstarter campaign!
Lovecraftian is just a way to describe the cosmic/interdimensional horror genre.
Quite true.
Unless it contains reference to lovecrafts work or creations I agree.
I'm with Mrs Movies on practical effects vs CGI! 👍
Dagon is another great low budget movie that almost completely pulls from Lovecrafts Shadows over Innsmouth. It's a real treat.
LOVE Dagon!
@mindime1499 Right? The few corny cgi effects are ehh but shadows over innsmouth is one of my favorite stories
A few movies that come to mind are Beyond the Black Rainbow,Mandy, and Color Out of Space(two are Nicholas Cage flicks)
All brilliant films.
Don't forget Brain Bamage...it has that 80s From Beyond and ReAnimator look and feel.
@@0PsychosisMedia0 Brain Damage...
I immediately thought of Beyond the Black Rainbow when i saw this
Vastly underrated and yep practical f/x is truly far more terrifying than anything spewed out of a computer. Solid Lovecraftian nightmare fuel (w/echoes of Carpenter's PRINCE OF DARKNESS in its bleak final act).
It also shares the siege element of ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 and the slow burn spookiness of THE FOG.
Agreed. I hate CGI usually. Jurassic Park is an example of beautiful CGI with even better practical effects
This film is technically cosmic horror, which is like Cthulhu and stuff like HP Lovecraft horror
Yup. "weird tales stories/fiction" was literally the genre he published in. So the Mrs is correct, cosmic horror is weird. it's the exploration of the unnamable, the indescribable & the unknowable.
An underrated gem. Love this film ❤
This film is quite the mindfuck, a love letter to John Carpenter and H.P. Lovecraft from Canada. The only people who I recognize from this is Art Hindle (the original Black Christmas, the first two Porky's films, David Cronenberg's The Brood) as Mitchell and Ellen Wong (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, Netflix's GLOW) as the intern.
The sheriff was Aaron Poole who was also in The Empty Man and the doctor was Kenneth Welsh who has been in loads but I know him from Twin Peaks season 2 and a few episodes of The Expanse season 1.
Thank you for pointing these vital facts out.
If you watch Letterkenny you'd recognize the tweaker
I'm so excited for this movie reaction
"In the Tall Grass" , "The Ritual" and "The Ruins"💡
Fuck yeah, The Ruins!
Ruins is cool, but the book it based on much better
The very first cell phone released for the public to buy was back in 1983 for around $3500 and weighed 2.5 lbs. Also known as "the brick".
Lovecraftian horror comes from the fear of the unknown. Like how significant each person's life is compared to the vastness of the universe. It's because we don't fully comprehend what's going on is the genesis behind this movie.
We don't understand where this power is coming from, what the cultists objective is, all the questions with little answers. That's why Lovecraft or cosmic horror is so difficult to make vs any kind of slasher or other horror genres.
Thank you Christi and Patrick for for this recommendation.
I don't really think thats how it works... most Lovecraft stories are pretty easy to understand and follow (city full of monsters, big monster waking up, something from space draining life out of a family living on a farm...), the horror comes from the realization of how small and insignificant humanity is and what unheard of forces can be out there, not from not understand whats going on :P Like literally in the intro to Call of Ktulu Lovecraft writes that "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents."
10:47 -- RE: "....Alien?!"; A: This is what is essentially meant by Lovecraftian, and as with "The Thing" too. Yes, alien, but also cosmically gigantic, or transcendentally superior in some way. Ancient Otherworldly or Overworldly or Underworldly Horror expressed in a sense that is older than classical Greece and may be part of the problems of what caused ancient destruction in human forgotten civilizations, this is what makes it "Occult" but also Eldritch.
The Weirder part of the Alien-ness is also Lovecraftian in that its used in a late 19th century sense of what that term meant. The Void is a bit like Nietzsche's Abyss which eventually stares back into the Observer. It's also some kind of caused thing, like a plague by unknown means, and the Policeman's metaphorical eyes clearly indicate he did get infected, early, but he's a little more resistant, perhaps.
Check out underwater starring christen Stewart.
I love this movie so much. Kostanski is a director to watch! His film Psycho Goreman is legit one of my most favourite of all time. And he's currently making a sword and sandals fantasy epic
Ah guys, thanks for watching this little gem.💎👌
Has elements of thriller,slasher,Sci-Fi,body horror, cults, hell, the works. Is really well shot, performed and paced. Will intrigue and disgust you equally!Great effects and I really like the way characters react...because you would act confused and instinctivel.I really hope you get into it and try to work it out.Plus,it was released in the UK,where I seen it.Got the dvd on release.Great comment about using practical effects and in this, they're really good and horrible!Cool movie.👍
I will say the watching this again for the first time through your reaction knowing the budget… they KILLED IT knowing that. I had issues on first watch but this feels like a miracle of people who care watching again now.
Lovecraft... By way of Canada!
Awesome reaction of my favorite movie!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊
The Color Out of Space
Wow this is such a random pick that I never see any reactors do but I’m so glad! You guys should do Color Out of Space, best cosmic horror in a long time!
If you haven't, I'd highly recommend Underwater, with Kirsten Stewart, won't say any more due to spoilerish things.
I've seen WAY too many horror movies, and this one made my stomach turn. Thumbs up
Great to hear enthusiasm for the practical. Mandy I'm sure is all practical/ Enjoy!!
10:17-10:26 I felt Mrs Movies reaction at this point of the video entirely! lol 🤣😂
Gave me a sorta Hellraiser 2 vibe too.
There’s a major piece of CGI in the film. They only had one or two cultists available and basically copy pasted more with CGI!
Bro you made her watch the Void?!?! lol
Dagon, (2001) ❤❤❤
Luca, (2021) ❤❤❤
Practical effects are the only effects!
There is a indie budget silent film from 2005 called Call of Cuthulu. The whole style is 1920s slient era. I recommend it for you and the Mrs. I think you both may dig it.
The void means that the function won't return anything. The other movie with the practical effects is "Harbinger down" from 2015.
I’d LOVE to see a reaction to Psycho Goreman. It’s fun!
Yay! More cosmic horror! This flick should've received more attention than it did.
Nice to see The Void getting some love. Anyone watched the even more obscure The Endless and The Outwaters?
Another great Lovecraftian movie I enjoyed was Dagon.... I loved the drunk bum character he was funny
Ellie Wong was the high school girlfriend from Scott Pilgrim vs The World
Please watch the Ritual!! British film about 4 friends lost in a forest, not what youre expecting, excellent watch
The Dr reminds me of Frank from Hellraiser 1,The scen with the boy at the end running from the creature reminds me of a scene from Hellraiser 2
I love the practical affects yes.
Reminds me of a mix between Lord of illusions and Mouth of Madness. Great little gem of a movie
You mentioned catheter. you should let somebody try using a guidewire inserting a catheter that hurts like hell. The nurses tried 16 or 17 times oh we keep hitting something each time they're jabbing that wire into me I bled like a stuck pig for 3 days.
This is one of my favourite horror movies, I am a sucker for cosmic and body horror!
One thing that has me wondering though, and spoilers ahead:
When the nurse says in the beginning "This isn't my face. Will you help me?"
Is she trying to go through the same metamorphosis that Powell successfully underwent at the end, or is she another case of Powell putting a soul back in a body?
As in, is that actually another person (or other entity) inside of her body trying to get "out", something that it can only do once the body is dead and it's original soul has departed?
After all, it's only once she dies that she changes, to better reflect the thing that now inhabits her corpse.
In other words, was she a devout follower wanting to change, or was she another of Powell's victims?
Watch EDEN LAKE.
This movie Hits hard.
I had read about this movie but had never seen it. I might have to go back and watch it in full.
How strange, i was just thinking of how much this reminded me of event horizon then mr movies said it 😂 love this film, always appreciate seeing practical effects 👌
Love it bought it watched it 100 times. Now just waiting for more from this director
So I barely watched this movie for the first time just for this reaction and while I didn’t like the movie as a whole, those practical effects most definitely bumped it up some points like wow. This was in 2016 where normally this would’ve been done with CGI but all that practical work was great I was disgusted at so many points in the movie. Like truly great creature designs and gore.
Best movie in ALOONNGGG time,... practical all the way...🤘🔥🤘🔥🤘 Color out of Space and Spring is good also 🤘 Lovecraft 🔥🤘
Y'all should watch Glorious.
every movie should use practical effects for the most part
If you wanna watch another great movie by these guys but instead of pure horror it’s a comedy. Well kind of. Watch Psycho Goreman. It’s about an all powerful world destroyer called Psycho Goreman coming to earth and a little girl gets hold of an artefact that controls him and hilarity ensues. Loads of practical effects and makeup kind of like the Power Rangers.
Glorious is a fun one.
The Void is another awesome Lovecraftian cosmic horror movie, glad to see it get reacted to.
Was that the board there at the end? No wait that’s an inverted black pyramid. Still great movie hope you guys keep doing more lovecraft stuff. Cosmic horror is my favorite genre.
If you guys liked this movie. "Color out of space" recent-ish nick cage film thats just one of HP lovecraft's short stories. Waaaay better than you'd think it is given nick's recent film history. But he is utilized so well throughout the film and it does all the good horror movie nods. Very few jump scares, isn't scared to show you whats going on right in front of you cause you won't understand it right away and nothing is sacred.
If you love practical Effects you should watch F/X and F/X2
I take it you guys are on a horror movie kick right now.
Great movie and a great reaction :)
You REALLY should review Lawrence of Arabia. Arguably the best cinematography of any film ever made. Great script and acting. The best all-round film ever!
I forgot I watched this movie but it felt like a B movie, but probably one of the best B movies I've seen.
This movie has no business being this good. It's a simple premise on a low budget, but the actors and the special effects truly elevate it to another level.
Hollywood really needs to take note of movies like this and Godzilla Minus One. There is so much you can do when you actually hire creative people who love what they do.
Would LOVE to see how you react to Nic Cage in Color Out Of Space!! I was thinking you had already watched it on the channel.
Since you watched this one, now you need to see "Colour out of Space" too.
Love this film. Wonder why some people can't get the story. It's all in the movie
Lovecraftian horror is tentacles and madness. This is very Lovecraftian.
Roald!
one of the directors also did Psycho Goreman. Please see that if you haven't yet!
This movie is a huge passion project, almost scrapped multiple times, and just like Aliens they only had 6 or 7 cultists outfits so they just cloned em in post
Not sure if you already watched this, either for yourselves or the channel (and I'm too lazy to go look for a video on it from you 😊), but the actress who plays Kim was Knives Chau in Scott Pilgirim vs the World.
Color Out of Space next!
The practical effects made me want to jump out of my skin, it was really done well. The doctor made me think of hellraiser.
Very low budget and i love ho Lovecraft I've been a fan of his work since i was a teen snd this film just made me so happy
The problem is with execs wanting to cut costs so they make CGI the default now instead of practical effects, because most of the CGI is outsourced to nonunion shops so it's a lot cheaper than quality practical effects that are usually done by union workers who are generally treated better.
Great film. Bought this and Black Mountain Side same day for a cosmic horror binge and loved both. For practical effects you could watch Harbinger Down (or Inanimate as it's sometimes known). If you're feeling brave you could try Thanatomorphose though I'm not sure how much of that you could put on youtube!
You guys are killing it.😊💯👍 Please do a reaction to Terror Planet with Bruce Willis.
Planet Terror, but I would rather see them watch the whole Grindhouse film.
I love this one
A good balance of practical and cg (for enhancement) is the sweet spot. If I had one element that should *ALWAYS* be practical in my opinion, it would be keep blood practical. Use squibs or whatever, but don’t cgi blood please
Pretty good cosmic horror flick
The prevailing theory is that while this is going on anyone who kills someone and is then killed themselves returns to life as a monster. But the rules are iffy as hell.
you have to watch another movie these guys did called 'psycho goreman' one of my favorite movies of the last decade.
They also did "Manborg".
For more Lovecraftian goodness, check out Color Out of Space starring Nic Cage.
"this is a creature feature?"
Lovecraftian horror. Expect lots of tentacles.
I remembered I liked the film, but I had issues with the ending. I also remembered it being more vibes than story, and that it didn’t seem like that was their goal.
That said, y’all might want to check out, (if you haven’t already seen them,) the Turkish film Baskin (2015) or two films out of Argentina Into The Abyss (2022) or Terrified (2017.)
Godspeed 🙏🏼☺️
PS - Yeah Lovecraftian Horror comes in about three different forms, I haven’t written about that in a while though, but it’s mostly Cosmic Horror.
Off the top of my head: Madness & insanity, the cosmic horrors, and then the Lovecraftian mythos where he actually goes into detail about the Eldritch gods and the various creatures that exist within his world-building.
There’s no Satanism, or more aptly “devil worship,” in Lovecraft-The closest we come is the cults that worship the Eldritch gods, à la Cthulhu, and then one of the areas where his racism, (more aptly xenophobia,) comes into play, when he describes people of other cultures practicing religions like Voodoo.
i hope you guys will watch Color out of Space now, Nicolas Cage is wonderful in it
"this movie's weird"
Yes. Yes it is.
The budget was only $82,510. I repeat. Only $82.510. Hollywood needs to seriously rethink their current special effects.
You should check out Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet Of Curiosities. The episodes are based on H.P. Lovecraft's cosmic horror novels.
It's a trick get an Axe.
This is a entry in the Lovecraftian lore
Don't see how. It's lovecraftian sure but how is it adding anything to the lore?.
