The first big horror movie to use cornfields as a setting is probably Children of the Corn (84). Features a gang of murderous children who kill their entire town's adult populus and sacrifice new 18-year-olds to a pagan god. I wouldn't recommend it for the channel unless you're in the mood for something campy.
No star is complete without watching John Carpenter's The Thing.
Psst also look out for the horror comedy Housebound.

Mia Goth was literally snubbed for Best Actress awards everywhere in 2023. She deserved a lot more than just a few viral clips/audios on social media. Her performance in this film is absolutely amazing.

Most would agree. She said in an interview (with Jake Hamilton) that she believes horror movies are robbed is because of the “political aspect” which isn’t too far off.
The Exorcist is one of the fewer outliers (though a certain subset of people took issue and seemed to genuinely believe Linda Blair was possessed by the devil).

i think the pig has a lot of symbolism for pearl tbh. all she ever wanted was to get off the farm and do something else with her life, and instead she stayed there until she was old and frail and even died, rotting there because of maxine. the pig could’ve been brought inside, it could’ve been thrown away or taken somewhere else, and instead it just sat on that farms porch. rotting. just like pearl did

Exactly. Notice the scene where she is crying and her face looks like a mess, it shows the pig straight after, like there was some resemblance (her make up and tears made her face look like it was infected or rotten)

i love how the judges remark about them wanting someone blonde, with the addition of Mitsy being present, is what fuels Pearl's hatred of blondes
Mia Goth's entire monologue is one of the best I've seen in recent years, not only in a horror film but in a movie in general
The fact that it was done in one take is a testament to her talent. I would love to see her and Toni Collette go toe to toe in movie together. Like what Julia roberts and Meryl Streep did in “August Osage County”.

It's a thousand wonders Pearl did not burst into flames the moment she walked her demonic self in that church. The fact Howard stayed with her is mind-blowing.
Truth. Lends credence to the theory that he's literally as bad as she is. (That and what happened with the friend. The only way Howard lived as long as he did was if he was as bad as her.)
He clearly loves her leaving his wealthy family to live on the rural farm, but I also always thought he might've been a bit desensitized to killing because he came back from ww1 and could've lost it a bit as well
I’ve seen some stuff about how Howard probably didn’t go to war out of pride but because he also is a little bit like Pearl. Sadistic maybe.

I googled it up, from what I've read, corn fields have kinda always been creepy.. 9ft tall stalks, alone inside the denseness, the constant ruffling in the wind masking if there's anyone else in there with you.. and then people just started making movies with them.. most notable, Children of the Corn
yup, stephen king and children of the corn. but yea, scarecrows and corn fields are just kinda inherently creepy
Yeah interesting question actually. Children sprang to mind for me too; the earliest one I could think of that's somewhat horror-adjacent is North by Northwest
not to mention how incredibly easy it is to get lost in a corn field...
If I had to take a guess, the original Wizard of Oz made cornfields terrifying
Did you notice how Pearl yelled at her mother "The whole world's gonna know my name!" and in X, Maxine yells the same thing at Pearl, followed by "Stop staring at me!" Now we know why she was staring.
with the staring, i also noticed pearl say something along the lines of "what are you staring at" to the framed picture of howard on her bedside table

There's a lot of Wizard of Oz parallels btw. Pearl is Dorothy and we have a scarecrow. In Wizard of Oz witch melts by hot water. I think you understand what I mean :)
when I saw the scene of her arriving on her bike with that dress on I immediately thought of the real-life bad witch on her bike
There’s also the message “There’s no place like home” and pearl ending up stuck on the farm
And by the end of it, she's the new Wicked Witch, bicycle and all!
Whats probably most tragic about this film is I legitimately don't think Mitzy was lying about not getting the part. Shes sounds so unnatural when she tells Pearl that she did as compared to before she asks her to "not lie to her". But because she looks exactly like what they told her they were looking for, she just wouldn't believe any other outcome.

I love how for this trilogy Ti West makes every movie feel like a movie from that time it takes place. X feels like a Texas Chainsaw, grimy, low budget, Vietnam era slasher. Pearl feels like an early 1900s, wizard of oz technicolor, gone with the wind style film. And I believe Maxxxine (based on the trailer) is going to be a 1980s, Regan era excess type film. So brilliant how they all feel so different and yet come together.
During this movie I just couldn’t stop crying over the dad 😢 he is just witnessing his family going down hills and can not move or say anything my heart breaks for him he has a kind old man face 🥲🥲🥲😭
Pearl's monologue was AMAZING. Mia Goth is a jem.
The A24 horror you described is that kind of disturbing psychological horror film that's carried by the strength of the actors and the screenplay: the kind of horror that doesn't scare you as much as it makes your skin crawl. And yeah, "Pearl" was one of those rare examples where the sequel is better to the original film that preceded it.
Pearl has grown more and more on me the most times I watched it and now it's one of my favorite movies ever. I went in expecting to see "old lady creep origins" but we got so much more than that. This movie is so painful. We go in knowing full well Pearl is gonna spend the rest of her life in that farm, so seeing her younger, not-yet-so-murderous self go after her hopes and dreams is so painful because we know she'll fail. She wants so badly to be good, to live a different life, to be someone else, a yearning so strong it hurts. None of it excuses the things she does in the future, but you can definitely see where it comes from.
Her mom is stuck in a life she despises, and ends up taking her frustration out on Pearl, who ends up stuck in a life she despises just as much. Sounds like Pearl's always been segragated, living in a secluded farm with a controlling mother, and when she says "seems like there's something missing in me that the rest of the world has" she might be talking about the basic social skills she lacks, that might be a consequence of the life she's had, or something inherently wrong with her, we don't know. Makes me wonder if Pearl would have been a normal girl if she had a different life. We also don't know if Mitsy was picked, but I'm pretty sure she was, since they wanted someone blonde and she was the only blonde I saw at the church. The blonde hair being the reason of Pearl's rejection creates a lifelong deep hatred for blondes lol
Pearl's father, that poor man... God only knows what goes through his head day to day, seeing his wife resent him for being a burden and his daughter become more and more unhinged, without being able to do anything. The man watched his family fall apart.
Then we have Howard. We know Howard stuck with Pearl despite what she's done. And he even helps her in the future. Now, did he become a psycho after coming home and finding his wife murdered her parents and his sister? Did he lose his mind earlier, in the war? Has he always been a little odd too? We know he could have avoided serving in the military, but he insisted on going anyway...
In the end, this movie doesn't scare me as much as it makes me feel sorry for everyone in it. It has so much food for thought, specially about the fear of failure. All portrayed in bright technicolor and breathtaking musical score.
I feel like Howard knew Pearl had mental issues before he went to war but still loved her. And when she did finally completely go insane, he feels kinda responsible for not being able to help her while he was away
Therapist here - As somebody who has sat through some rather intense monologues, Pearl's breakdown to Mitsy is terribly tragic. Obviously what she's done is wrong. It's incredible though how much a person's trajectory can change depending on who happens to be there when they breakdown. It's often the difference between healing and further spiraling. Similarly, the lack of safe environment to open up earlier -- due to her mother's hostility -- is likewise what passively encourages further breaking down until it all comes out. The pig is a great symbol for Pearl's sanity here. The mother doesn't welcome it in or accept it. Instead, it's left outside, neglected and rejected without praise or gratitude. As Pearl slowly falls apart, the pig becomes more and more ruined. Perhaps if she'd been accepted or allowed to share safely how she felt when the 'pig' was whole and first offered, she doesn't fall apart. But it's not and so she decomposes, in plain view but surrounded by people who don't (mother) or can't care (father). The projectionist and Mitsy don't know what's going on, by the time they see it, she's already decompensating. Pearl obviously does wrong, but you could argue the true or initial villain is the mother who left her daughter's spirit to rot outside her love just as she did the pig outside the home. The difference simply being a kind, patient parent can make in a child's life is literally life changing. All that being said, Pearl still done bad. Just... so bad. She isn't off the hook here, haha.
That being said, your instinct is exactly right. When confronted by somebody who appears potentially dangerous, better to agree and appear to endorse them so you can get out than risk upsetting them while alone together. But you're better off rationalizing your leaving as some form of endorsing them, like "How about I make you a cup of tea? You wait here comfortably and I'll fetch it from the kitchen. Then we can perhaps write a letter to Howard saying he ought to come home immediately." Just suddenly needing to leave breaks the illusion of support, as poor Mitsy found out.

Mia Goth mugging the camera during the credits as she doesn’t blink while her eyes are reddening and pouring tears, is burned into my memory since I saw this in theaters. Also poor Mitsy, girl opened a door with that role play that she couldn’t close.

honestly one of my favorite parts of the film is how deeply relatable pearl can be at times. like yes she's insane and crazy, but the movie also shows us the source of many of her problems (her mom) and how they have deeply affected her. and as someone with deeply intense mommy issues, mental health issues, and the same exact fears of wasting away and rejection as pearl, i see a lot of myself in her, albiet very much exaggerated cartoony murderous and nearly psychotic.
I was not crazy about "X", but loved Pearl. I am now looking forward to Maxxxine.

The thing that I love about the movie's opening is that if you went into this (Not even watching X....), you'll actually believe that this is gonna be all wholesome with a character talking to her animal friends about her dreams and skipping around as the music plays almost thinking she's break into song, but then she just straight up kills a goose and the musical wonder you were hoping for, is just turned into straight horror.
As if the director is giving a huge middle finger to that Disney musical trope we always see....
That one last shot is absolutely terrifying. Absolutely Oscar Worthy from Mia Goth.

"now is not the time to be taking deep breaths." Lol i love the little comments you make during the reaction. Pearl is a masterpiece truly from the acting to the cinematography. Also if you remember from X when Pearl says to Howard "You know i hate blondes" After pushing Bobby Lynne to her demise, it shows how she still holds a deep resentment towards Mitsy all those years later because she was that blonde archetype that prevented her from getting picked at the audition. Also a movie i highly recommend that has bright dream like visuals with a ominous undercurrent that slowly unravels itself would be the 1977 film 3 women with Shelley Duvall and Sissy Spacek. I wouldn't necessarily deem it as horror though. Its classified as mystery/thriller but overall has such a unique energy to it that is very dreamy and is my favourite movie that i can keep coming back to.
3 Women is terrific. Altman was a master.

Cornfields instinctually create an uneasy feeling cuz it's easy to become disoriented in them and "get lost" which then can cause panic. It became a trope in horror movies (moreso ones set in the south) after Children of the Corn.

People used to get lost in cornfields…so it was scary to them, hence why it has turned into such a big trope in the horror genre.
when i saw the trailer, i genuinely thought we're gonna see how pearl met howard and how they would fall in love. Like i thought the movie's gonna be about her parents disapproving their relationship and it's gonna fuel pearl to do evil stuff yknow lmao

Although not directly shown, in the original Twilight Zone episode "It's a Good Life" from 1961, people are sent to a never ending corn maize via an evil telepathic kid.
I doubt that this is even this first time the trope had been used. It was probably written in books well before then, but this is my first recollection of it being used.
I wasn't exactly sure what to expect with this film but it definitely took me by surprise. The cinematography was very interesting and kind of cool. Definitely not as "horror movie" as I thought it would be but quite horrific.
The acting is astounding! Mia's acting gave me chills, broke my heart and freaked me out. Oh Pearl, what a pschopath.
That ending shot, I mean really? I had to look away eventually, no amount of gore can make me as uncomfortable as that shot.
Moral of the story - don't try to put your responsibilities onto your children to stop them from getting to do what they want will get you killed because of their frustration with you.
Pearl is truely one of the best movies, like it is so insane everything pearl does, she is psychotic, but shes so interesting, and has so much depth to her character, a24 just knows how to make a cinematic masterpiece, and watching your reaction reminded me how much i loved this film, the acting, and cinematography are so beautifully done.

Pearl is most likely sixteen in the prequel, and she has mental ailments that are not being treated. Her life sucks, she is trapped in her own existence, and married to a man she has resentmentment for on top of it, I would say she's sympathetic to a certain degree
Mia Goth deserved an Oscar or at least a Nomination for that final shot alone, she never blinked once

Pearl is such a great dive into the character of Pearl it was so fascinating and Mia Goth delivered an amazing performance like seriously she ate. I do like X just a bit more since X is more of a slasher but still this was an awesome horror prequel.

This movie was really weird, but honestly I really appreciate this video. This week as been very stressful, it started with my aunts funeral and ended with a 10 page paper and a chaotic shift at work. I woke up today in a bad mood. But, when I watched this video for a moment I got a break. This was the perfect way to start the day and it put me in a better mood. Thank you Caitlin, I really needed this! The movie was good, creepy, but good!

Re: your question about when cornfields started being creepy: the earliest example I can think of is North By Northwest. The cornfield scene in that is also notable because it’s an incredibly tense scene that takes place in broad daylight, much like Midsommar.

The idea of scary corn fields was always because of the scarecrows. Although, it could be linked back to “Children of the Corn” as a classic 80’s horror film.
If you’ve never seen it, I highly recommend it! The remake that came out not long ago isn’t as good.

I absolutely love Pearl, she really resonated with me. Wishing she could be like everyone else, because it seems like it makes life easier than having to fight her impluses but ultimately not being able to in the long run. You can tell she has a conscience, but it really comes and goes fast with her emotions. Then, as she got old her she really had nothing else to lose, but Howard, and he stuck by her all the way until the end.
And her monologue is absolutely perfect ❤ i legit just search it up to listen to it on it's own sometimes

X is a bit gloomy because it represent the 70s/80s movies, the slashers that seemed like it has an old camera-esque filter, this is also the time the movie is set.
Pearl is extremely colorful due to it referencing technicolor, the vibrant movies during the time. Tho technically, if it's 1918 it should be black and white but well the technicolor colorful cinematography lends a better ironic spin to the gory and hopeless state of Pearl.

I might be wrong, but I think the first widely known horror film dealing with corn fields would be Children of the Corn from 1984. There's probably others that came before that, but a movie that most everyone has heard of...i'd say it has to be that one.

One detail I’d like to point out is her mother got burned so fast because of the clothes material they used to use in that time period. They catch fire so quickly. That’s why her mother was burned bad.
