Yes, the Yamaha TX-816. I went through 2 of those back in the day until they just stopped, lol. Great tour. Love the setup. We have many similar synths and gear in our setups.
Awesome tour! My Roland D50 story - bought one from a GoodWill for $15! Of course not everything works so someday I need to fix it or find a synth doctor. Now I am constantly walking into ThriftStores every where hoping for another great find!
I've been in a lot of thrift stores, but never found a Roland D50 in one. However, I did find a shiny red Yamaha SHS-10 keytar for $1.50 that works perfectly! 🙂
Awesome setup! The Model D and Neutron are fantastic bangs for the bucks. The pre-interface limiter is a good call. I definitely want to check out that reverb pedal, but would also recommend the Earthquaker Avalanche Run v2. Heavenly sounds!
Jim, Thanxs for the tour ! Loved it ! Loved the gear... I have a similar studio ... amongst the gear, a DX7 II FD with Grey Matter.... love it ! You have, a good assortment of goodies in the outboard gear department . I run everything through my Allen Heath 636 into iMac / Logic Would be great to bounce some questions and queries off of you. Thanks again for the tour... ! Cheers G
Gunars Brants sure thing! I’m starting a live streaming show called “Tech Talk” tomorrow night at 8pm CST on my Facebook page (Jim Daneker) - you’re welcome to join!
Sweet, my mouth is wide open, wish one of my best friends that played for Reba McIntyre was alive to see this, we would talk about this set up for days. Very nice Jim.
Jim thank you so much. Without your video I would not have known what the Behringer XTOUCH could do for my Spit fire audio DAW!! Both the Universal Control for only $399.00 and Control Surface for $599.99
Thanks for the great video. Could you please share the square footage of the studio? I wanna get an idea as to how to set up mine ... thanks in advance
Great tour. Good to see solutions like you're implementing. I am always looking for the best way to set up my work space. To create what I couldn't even imagine as a teenager. I hope to learn something from what you've got going on. I'm very interested in how you're integrating MainStage into your workflow.
I only use MainStage when on tour - in which case I use my custom solution called BackStage Pass - which is sampled from all these keyboards among others!
Great studio! I have a few of the same synths (Rev2, model d, and the Jupiter Xm which has a similar engine to the Jupiter X). I love the console and all of the flexibility you have with your controllers. Thanks for sharing. The Stream Deck is awesome too.
Great video Jim. Love the tour. I subscribed right away. I understand the "This is the room I wanted when I was a teenager," comment as my set up is that for me. I think I'm a bit more earlier 80's late 70's where as you're more mid 80's with your choices. I love your set up though. Kudos.
@@JimDaneker it's amazing how 5 years can make slight differences in the sounds that attract a person. I was born in 68 so my preferences in sonics actually reflects in the equipment that I choose and the equipment that you choose by 5 years (CS10, SK30 instead of the DX range) although there is also overlap (having a Hammond organ is a must).
You might want to check out Gig Performer. It walks all over Mains Stage. We've been touring with it for over a year and it's never failed. VERY powerful. Nice to see some of the old favourites, D50, TX816 etc, plus modern versions of JP8, MiniMoog, Prophet etc. What Leslie FX do you use for your Hammond?
tryptychUK Thanks! Gig Performer has some great features and is lighter on CPU with some 3rd party instruments, but sadly it can’t use the Logic/MS EXS sampler or plugins, which are more efficient than anything I’ve ever seen or tested. Plus I‘ve created a MASSIVE amount of custom content for it, and it allows a degree of custom control you can’t find anywhere else. Both great for different things, for sure! As for Leslie, when I can’t use my real 147, I have a custom MainStage channel strip that uses their Leslie plugin and a custom impulse response to put it in a virtual room... best virtual Leslie I’ve ever heard. There’s a demo of it on my channel if you’d like to hear it ;-)
@@JimDaneker Hi Jim, thanks for the response. I can understand why you would not wish to switch when you have invested so much into a operational system. As for samplers, I use NI Kontakt which works perfectly, even with massive libraries. GP's biggest problem is slow load times, but this is outweighed by the fact it will not glitch or hang MIDI notes between patches. It also demands BIG slabs of RAM if you use a lot of patches. As for Hammond, I use the Arturia B3 alongside the IK Amplitube Leslie emulation as I find it superior, and it also allows me to add other distortion effects into the chain, such as a Big Muff. The JP-X looks interesting as I used to own a Jupiter-8 - Is this just a hardware version of Roland's VST's, or is it closer to the original? I found their virtual emulations to be somewhat lacking that "balls" against the originals, notably the D50, (I have a D550).
@@TryptychUK Yes indeed - if I were using all my 3rd party stuff (especially Kontakt libraries), then Gig Performer would be ideal. When I'm at home in the studio, I don't have any need for MainStage - it's a whole different deal. When I'm working on bigger scoring projects, then it's almost exclusively big Kontakt libraries, some East West Play, Omnisphere, etc. As for the Jupiter X, it's really like an anthology of their big hits - Jupiter 8, Juno 106, SH101, XV5080, vintage drum machines, etc. And they all sound utterly stunning. There are several youtube videos of it being A/B'd against the originals, and it's ridiculous how close they sound. My "itch" for those pieces has been scratched! If you just wanted a Jupiter 8/Juno 106, then their System 8 is a killer option too - the models in that one might even be a hair closer to the originals as the modeling tech goes even deeper!
@@JimDaneker I was referring to using Gig Performer in a live situation. I find using virtual synths far easier than having to lug a bunch of keyboards and racks on stage like I did for many years, (particularly things like Hammonds, Mellotrons and Fairlights!) As for orchestral samples, you should check out Spitfire Audio, truly the best around, particularly Albion. The thought was the JP-X might have the same but more, and frankly I don't really need yet another TR808, I have a million. I guess if I was that desperate for the sound, I would buy another original JP8, but there would be many others I would probably buy first (Oberheim OBX for instance.)
This is all very cool. But when will the wave of your music hit the Earth, Jim ? Maybe someone, no matter where - in L.A., Berlin, or Stockholm, - a small part of these beautiful machines would just serve as a good service for creating soulful synth-pop tracks and stuff like that ?
Great encouragement Roman, thank you! There is definitely new music of that sort brewing right now... a continuation (in a different style) of what I started on the AD ALTA album. Stay tuned!
horowizard It certainly is a problem solver! I also use a Behringer ADA8200 to add 8 analog inputs on the far side of the room - so it’s just one little fiber optic cable vs. 8 analog cable runs which risk noise, hum, etc. ;-)
Cool Studio - I was wondering how do you connect the Unitor 8 to your computer as I've just bought one and my Mac doesn't seem to see it - Any Tips? Thanks
Well that was a 1st! I somewhat randomly found my self here. I watched the entire video, but literally had no idea what you were saying. LOL. clearly Im not a practitioner, but rather a listener and appreciator. Ohh I will say that stream deck keypad thingy ma jig....I will look into that, to see if they make one on a lower tier AKA: bonehead capable. Lastly, I am operable to very much appreciate your craft/art/creative. BRAVO!!!
Very nice! Thank you for the tour. Now I have to go and check out some of your music. I"m looking forward to it. Just curious though. No Korg gear? I myself am a huge fan of Korg products. My favorite being my old Kronos. But that just me. To each his own as we say. Stay healthy and thanks again!
Thanks! And yeah, I'm a big Korg fan! I have a Wavestate and Minilogue XD coming - can't wait! And I grew up in the Korg heyday of the 80s and 90s so I've definitely had my share!
Loved the tour. My studio (if one can call it that) is a far more humble setup. I would love to know what kind of music you make, and which equipment do you see as absolutely essential to doing your job. Do you find yourself gravitating towards certain items more than others?
Thanks my friend! I do all kinds of stuff, but it tends to be very cinematic, synth-heavy pop overall. I did an epic instrumental album called AD ALTA you can check out on iTunes - and also recently a new epic pop single called '32' - you can find videos on my channel or music on iTunes. As for gear, the hardware synths are great to have but you could do tons of great stuff with just a laptop and some great plugins like Omnisphere or Nexus. It's a never ending wish list, but that doesn't mean it's necessary! ;-)
Hi I now this is a stupid question. But what type are keyboard stand are you using?? Backstage is really good thanks for the piano preset is my favorite
wow, nice toybox. did I miss the korg rack with a 2600, wavestation and a couple of kronos'...………….. and a monotron? lol. fwiw, I just commented in a bobeats video how I was lining up to get a little moog or model D to get "THAT" sound. Well, you just iced my decision: model D it is (i'm a rompler/workstation person so that is a big step for me. manual patching isn't my favorite thing to do).
Funny you ask - just after I did this video, I added a new Korg Minilogue XD and Wavestate. Honestly, if I could only have just 2 hardware synths right now, it would be those 2. They cover an insane amount of territory between the two of them! And yeah, the "Boog" Model D is stunning too for that sound!
@@JimDaneker That's awesome that you really like those 2 korg synths. I also finally got my wavestate, and it will be a while before I even get the feel of what it really can do. My only wish is for korg to enable loading our own samples. I have visions of crazy rainstorms etc created for my ambient creations and more weird vocal things. BTW, thx for the reply. I could pester you with questions for hours especially regarding your fantastic roland collection as I am more a korg/Yamaha user and don't know roland so well. but I will spare you haha. have fun learning your new toys and stay safe.
They are very comparable. Both are absolutely top-notch, and cover a ridiculously wide range of sounds. The Fantom is more of a workstation though, where the Montage is more of a live performance synth. The Montage is a bit more complicated to program, but the rewards are worth it... it can do some types of sounds that the Fantom can’t: motion-oriented sequences patches with multiple layers, etc. It also has a legit DX engine in it. They’re both killer machines!
Hey you're doing backups wrong. You should look in to a prebuild truenas box (I think they call it a truenas appliance) as your storage solution. It uses the ZFS file system, where you take your drives and it combines them in to a larger pool of drives, and makes the files redundantly available on multiple drives like a raid, but also double checks whatever it's writing to the filesystem and checks for errors that might occur due to EMI (yes digital has EMI issues as well). It goes further than that but that might be going a bit too deep, but it's really nice and has really cool features like automatic file snapshots, which you can recall through time machine on your Mac. You can also speed up your (already fast, since it grabs files from multiple drives at the same time) hard disks by adding an SSD as a cache (called ZIL and L2ARC for write and read respectively) so you just keep your projects on there and don't even bother with local storage. I doubt a local SSD will be faster at loading in large sample libraries if you're on fast ethernet. If you're not convinced ZFS is worth it, you might want to look in to a concept called bitrot and then look at that system of multiple, aging external HDDs again. The way ZFS works protects you from that. In the end it will be easier since everything will be managed automatically, be more secure since it's a system build by computer scientists trying to make data secure, offer more features and will be cheaper since you need way less drives for the same amount of storage. Then, and maybe more importantly but also way easier to manage if you have a freenas appliance, you need to look in to an off-site backup service that will automatically back up your files in case your house burns down or whatever. Backblaze has a consumer service that will do it for a 6 bucks a month flat fee, though there are others out there which might offer more professional services like 24/7 support or extra data recovery services.
THIS IS WORTH LIKE 80K!!!! All his studio!! All I want is 3 synths to complement my Montage 8 and this dude has like everything in the world!!!!I I want to be like JIM!! That Roland JUPITER X Is the most beautiful looking synth in that room. I bet that changed the studio completely!
Hi, Jim ! Thanks a lot for the studio tour. What are the little keyboard under the montage and the keyboard right above the Prophet ? Thanks for your answer. Olivier from France.
Sure, thanks for asking! The little one under the Montage was my first synth - a Yamaha PSR-460 from 1986. It's essentially a baby DX7 with a handful of presets, and a really cool feature - 6 sliders that let you edit sounds in realtime. I keep meaning to sample it! The one above the Prophet is an Arturia Keylab 49 controller - I use it on the road for programming. Cheers!
Wow I thought I had a nice synth and hardware collection but I'm defo suffering gear envy watching this lol I have got the Dave Smith holy trinity though with the Prophets 6&12 & Pro3 but would really like one of them Prophet X's to cap it off hahaha
kruzin100 They’re pretty decent, but I’m not sure I’d use them as main monitors. I actually do like the low end on the Eris 8’s, and they’re pretty “warm” sounding - but they’re very dark monitors overall, and the sweet spot is really small. That said, I have a pair at each of my side synth stations and I like them for that!
Jim- Thanks for the Videos and App sounds great. I noticed that you were able to get your keys to stack tight and with great angles.. What stands are you using? Thanks

wow, nice toybox. did I miss the korg rack with a 2600, wavestation and a couple of kronos'...………….. and a monotron? lol. fwiw, I just commented in a bobeats video how I was lining up to get a little moog or model D to get "THAT" sound.
Did you just allege your midi processor makes your DX7 go to 11?! 😂🤣 Love ya Jimbo!!!
Ha - yep! 😂
What are your thoughts on the Yamaha Montage, is it comparable in sounds to the new Fantom? Thanks!
Jim, I would Love it if you would give us a video on programming the Stream Deck for Logic.
Great idea - I have a new series starting soon and I will be sure to include that!
@@JimDaneker Great! I am looking forward to it. Keep Doing That Voodoo That You Do! Thank you.
The Jupiter X is an incredible synth for sure! That and the new Fantom are definitely new favorites!
Loved seeing your setup! Very cool 😎. Would love to gear what software instruments are your go too. God Bless!
Oh man, that's a long list! As a synth nut, my top favorites are Nexus, Spire, Dune, and Omnisphere.
Great stuff, nice place, what kind of stand do you use for sintetizers?
Standtastic 103KS. I love them - and you can add more tiers if you want!
Cheers!
Wow I thought I had a nice synth and hardware collection but I'm defo suffering gear envy watching this lol
I have got the Dave Smith holy trinity though with the Prophets 6&12 & Pro3 but would really like one of them Prophet X's to cap it off hahaha
Hi Jim, saw you have some Eris monitors there, can you share your thoughts on them as far as quality and how they reproduce music generally....thanks.
kruzin100 They’re pretty decent, but I’m not sure I’d use them as main monitors.
Thanks
J Harris thanks much! Standtastic 103KS. I love them for the studio!
I’m interested in that stream deck
They are game changers - check it out!
Damn dude you got a sweet setup!!!
Thanks much!
