Phil Lynott is the kind of guy every singing bassist should aspire to be. Interesting basslines that don't step on the rest of the band but also a cohesive voice that stays interesting even though he isn't doing multiple octave runs. He's like a classic medieval bard singing his tales and playing his instrument. Lovely stuff.

Some people are critical of Phil Lynott because he doesn't have the kind of rock voice they expect having heard the likes of Bruce Dickinson or Rob Halford. But in the 1970's this was all still new, and there were no rules regarding how you should sing. Phil was an impeccable storyteller with a very intimate and expressive way of communicating with an audience. His phrasing, his ability to sing off and around the beat, is a great part of what makes him so effective.
I'm sorry but people who think he should have sounded like Bruce Dickinson or Rob Halford are really missing the point, imo. His voice was absolutely perfect for Thin Lizzy. Would it have been perfect in maiden or priest? Probably not but that's not the point. The point is Lizzy wasn't a fuckin metal band, I think sometimes people who are musically ignorant get confused by what genre they are because of the stellar guitar playing and all of the harmony solos.
Everyone always wants to cram shit into boxes to make their little brains feel in control ( me included 😢). But with Thin Lizzy it's always been obvious to me, at least, that they were just a great rock band with storytelling style lyrics and the aforementioned killer guitar harmonies which, btw, had never really been heard before at the time they came out. Of course they influenced maiden and priest and many other twin guitar bands that came after but yeah if Bruce or Rob were singing with Thin Lizzy with the production they had I really don't think it would have worked 😎
Phil is someone who deserves so much more accolades for his contributions to music. You have so many paths to follow when it comes to his music. One song, he is singing about the Angel of Death, where on another song, he is singing a beautiful song about his daughter "Sarah". The man could segue from hard rock, metal, pop, ballad, punk seamlessly. Man, I miss him. Dig deep into his catalogue and enjoy what you discover.
One of the greatest rock n roll bands ever, they deserve to be ranked up with Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Phil Lynott is one of the best singer players there has been, not to mention later on Gary Moore one of the greatest guitar players ever joined the band . Though everyone one that played in the band was incredible.
Phil Lynott is an Irish legend, there is a statue of him in Dublin - we love him 😀
A friend of mine played in a Lizzy tribute band ( Thin as Lizzy ) and Phil's mother Philomena regularly attended the gigs, I had the pleasure of sitting with her on several occasions and she was a lovely lady.
Parisienne walkways ( with Gary Moore ) and the live version of Still in love with you ( from Live and Dangerous ) are stunning.

Did you know that “Wild One” is about Philomena? She left Phil with his granny in Dublin and went to a Manchester where she ran her own hotel. And this is written from the perspective of the boy he was then, who missed her and only saw her rarely. They got on very well when he was an adult, but he never forgot the lonely boy he had been
I used to go to them when played the quays in Galway and the old oak in Cork ..nearest and closest sound to the main man himself ❤

You're by far my favourite reactor. You have a vocabulary that is impressingly beautiful and you express yourself with an ease that is so lovely to hear and listen to. Was lucky enough to see Thin Lizzy live at the 1983 Reading Rock Festival in England on their farewell tour which had all the members that ever were in the band have their moment. Cheerio lass. And a great song on which to start your Thin Lizzy journey, as I've long thought Wild One was one of Philip Lynott's finest vocal performances, and one of the few on which he allowed his natural Irish accent to come to the fore. And what a voice! His unique phrasing and sound, you can't mistake him for anybody else.
Really good of you to pick up on that end-of-line breathiness. That's a bit of a feature of Lynott's vocal style, and pops up all over the place in his songs.
Another overlooked talent that Phil Lynott had was his ability to play all of the bass lines live while he held down all of the lead vocals! Not an easy accomplishment.

I saw them play in '76 or '77 and one of the guitarists was sick so it was just a 3-piece band that night. They still rocked.

Completely agree on your point about these kind of songs being easier to sing and i have always loved Phil's warm tones .That's why i find the first 2 albums by Thin Lizzy to be among my faves as they are very blues, folk driven and really show his voice at its best(imo)...Thin Lizzy were always among my faves growing up and i still love them now...Great reaction....Peace..

I've always loved Phil Lynott's voice and singing style. I think there are two elements that contribute a lot to them:
1. A slight "lazy" quality, whereby he's often just a shade behind the beat, which makes it sound very relaxed and casual,
2. He makes vowels very full, with a swell at the start and round-off at the end, but the swell is relatively slow, so he kind of "slides into" the vowel rather than sounding it with a bright, immediate attack.
There are lots of good Thin Lizzy tracks to choose from. Parisienne Walkways (with Garry Moore) and Whiskey In The Jar are the classics, of course, but you should also consider Dancing In The Moonlight, Do Anything You Want To Do and my personal favorite, Don't Believe A Word.

Would love to see you react to the song Reincatrnation by a band called Aldious. The singers name is Re:No and sadly had to quit the band due to an inner ear disease, really sad, she was such a great singer. The song is actually about how the disease has killed her music career. The song is an eiry combination of Violin, acoustic guitar, full on metal and haunting, silky smooth vocals.. Best wishes as always from France..
I wear Lizzy t-shirts on the reg now that I’m entering my senior years, and while I’ve felt like one of very few that knows of the band, about 3 people per day come up and say anything from “greatest band ever”, to “my dad used to work as a roadie for them”. There are loads of fans left out there, in hiding.
Phil Lynott was one of the coolest guys to ever front a band on stage! He had a very special way of singing sometimes if was almost like he was rapping! Thin Lizzy is so much more than Boys are back in town but it is their most famous song after all and the only song that became at least a minor hit in the U.S. For various reasons they never really got a bigger break through in the U.S. despite touring there. Here in Europe they were huge offcourse. Btw you're the first one i've seen/heard analyzing Phil's voice!
Lynott had a really mesmerizing voice. Listen to the track Black Rose from the album with the same name. His voice sounds really big. And warm, like dripping honey. There's he's doing all this you're talking about here. And his phrasing has more in common with crooners like Sinatra and Sammy Davis jr than his rock and roll colleagues. He was totally unique.

I would love to see your reaction to more Phil Lynott performances because I believe he is one of the most underrated performers ever. Also, his last name is pronounced as lie-not, he used to get angry when it was pronounced differently 😂

One of my main music regrets was missing Thin Lizzy's only tour of Australia in 1978. It was a wet day in Melbourne and it was an outdoor gig, still kicking myself.

I just found you. You do a wonderful analysis and I binge watched about 10 videos last night. I enjoy your open mindedness when you listen to the variety of artists. I just have one request: Try a Little Tenderness by the Commitments. The lead singer was only 16 when he made the movie. His voice is out of this world.

Have you ever considered making a Laura Nyro video? One of the best, yet mostly unknown singer/songwriters around. She was different. Her music, voice, songwriting and piano accompaniment are wonderfully unique and refreshing. There isn't a lot of video of her. Save The Country video is more pop than most of her work. Poverty Train at the Newport Jazz Festival highlights her vocals but doesn't show her playing piano. I read after that performance she vowed never to perform without playing her own piano accompaniment again. Maybe choose an audio performance instead?

I was fortunate to see them in NYC at the Palladium and they were the most fun band to see in concert I ever saw. They could get the crowd really going with them, song after song. Best show I ever saw. Phil sounded so good live.

When Elvis died in 77, Phil who was a huge hardcore Elvis fan, locked himself up in his room for a week and listened to nothing but Elvis’ records, while drinking, not wanting to get bothered by anyone. He hadn’t forgotten who had started the ball rolling for all of them.
And made probably the best Elvis tribute song in King’s Call.

Hi, you mentioned Phil’s range and perhaps not having heard in this great song - so I would recommend Thunder and Lightning, or Cold Sweat by Thin Lizzy. This will show how Phil was able to adapt to a heavier rock scene in the early 80s.
