In this episode of Solo Playthroughs, Greg introduces Cthulhu: Death May Die to the channel with a playthrough of Season 1: Episode 1: Blaphemous Alchemy. The tough marksman Adam teams up with the stealthy savage Borden, as the two of them head into the cultist headquarters intent on destroying the labs calculated to complete a ritual primed to cause the world's destruction through the Elder One whose name should never be uttered: Hastur, the King in Yellow. If successful in destroying the labs, Hastur himself will enter the scene intent on claiming two new victims to the way of the yellow sign. Adding to this horror are disciples of the Yellow King and terrifying monsters fighting out investigators from room to room. Will Borden and Adam survive to the end of this fateful night? And, even if they do, will they manage to salvage any of their sanity? The stories of Season 1 begin now...

Another new-to-Solo Playthroughs game for your enjoyment! This is going to be the last "new game" for a while, as I'm really excited to start revisiting games in the upcoming couple months. Happy Gaming! Greg

For sure! Wasn’t getting to the table enough with my gaming groups but still really liked it even though I sold it.

Dang it. I’ve been eyeing this game for quite a while but managed to resist the pull of of The Great Old Ones thus far…. It looks so fun though!!

Great game! This is a a game that is so much fun! You are one of the few I have seen beat episode 1 first time on video. I hope to see the Nun next time through. Take care!

Thanks, Bryan! I haven’t checked out the Nun yet but now I’m intrigued. I’ll probably stick with alphabetical order when choosing investigators…so hopefully her name starts with a C! 🤣

From the mouth of Lovecraft himself it is pronounced:
    kuh-thool-who

The “who” on the end is a nice touch! Thanks. 🙂

I do love that you're branching out and trying new stuff on the channel, but between this and City of Kings, you've subjected yourself to some real stinkers. But the upside of this and City of Kings is that you were forced out of your comfort zone of limiting yourself to a single character. :)

Hey Tom! I appreciate the opinion but I’ve got to say I disagree with your take on this one. I genuinely think this game is solid fun with just enough interesting decisions to keep me engaged. As for City of Kings, that one is tougher for me to disagree. While “stinker” is a little harsh…I do think that game somehow falls short of its potential in a way that really hurts it. But Death May Die is stupid and big and strategic and engaging in a way that makes me want to keep playing it! 🤣

@@SoloPlaythroughs Glad you're enjoying it, and that certainly comes through in the playthrough. I mean, it's nothing like watching you grind yourself against that godawful Mars game! And to be fair, I've only read the rules and watched a couple of playthroughs of Cthulhu: Death May Die before deciding it's not for me. It just seems like something Lang and Daviau threw together without a lot of craft, and certainly without much thought towards Lovecraftian mythology. I mean, Lizzie Borden? Really, guys? Of course, it doesn't help that I'm not a fan of most dungeon crawls. It also doesn't help that I see so many elements here of Deep Madness, a relatively obscure dungeon crawl that I actually do like. And that game has characters far more ridiculous than Lizzie Borden.
But I look forward to seeing you play more scenarios of this. It wouldn't be the first time you've made me like a game more than I did before watching you play it.

Oh man. First Martians. Yikes!! Don’t remind me! 🤣 And I get it. The combination of Lovecraft fatigue (esp since the mythos itself does seem to be handled better in other games) and Death May Die being a bit “lighter” can definitely make this a miss for a lot of players. From a design perspective, I’m pretty impressed with it actually, as my initial impressions are that it balances accessibility and depth in a way that few games do. The dice mitigation through stress, the discovery cards, the variety of the scenarios/Old Ones/investigators, the brinksmanship element of dwindling sanity as a mechanism to character improvement - all of these systems are really smooth and come together really well. That said, the sacrificing of some depth for accessibility does mean that Death May Die probably won’t even crack my Top 10 - but it really fits into my collection perfectly by giving me a lighter coop I can get to the table quickly while allowing me to chuck some dice, be engaged, and have a good time. 🙂
